Rare WWII Submarine Dogfight Turns Deadly

- On February 9, 1945, two submarines are poised to engage in a direct, underwater confrontation. It's the first - and only - underwater submarine dogfight in recorded naval history.

There is a lot more to the story of U-864. The U-boat mission was to transport several key technology to the Japanese by way of Norway and the Arctic Circle to Japan. Aboard the U-boat were plans and components for the Jumo 004 turbojets along with 2 engineers from Messerschmitt, guidance components for V-2 ballistic missiles, 2 Japanese technicians trained in Germany and 67 tons of liquid mercury. When the wreck of U-864 was located in 2003, it was discovered that the poisonous liquid mercury was leaking into the surrounding ocean floor forcing the Norwegian government in 2017 to entomb the underwater wreck in 160,000 tons of sand and rock to contain the leak. BTW: the HMS Venturer did not just stumble on the U-864. The British knew of its mission and location because they had broken the Enigma code and deliberately sent the Venturer to ambush it.
Having so much mercury in an enclosed space like that sounds very dangerous.
And all those bodies in their iron coffin finally got a proper burial.
I'd have thought the mercury would have been valuable enough to attempt to recover it. 64 tons is quite a bit.
@@828enigma6 The value of recoverable material also depends on the cost of recovering from deep waters.
Also, since it was a foreign vessel there would be a lot of red tape and politics, environmental factors and studies before any salvage operation can be initiated. It was better to just entomb it than to go into the headache.
I appreciate how much you know your history
When you consider that the Brit Captain had to factor in the three dimensions of where the German U-boat might be, this is phenomenal skill with a lot of luck added in. The take away lesson is to never repeat a maneuver and don't be predictable.
4 dimensions! Don't forget time. Commanders should be used to 3 dimensions.
There's not much you can do in these situations, you have to follow established doctrines and protocols. Having to make something up might not work and wastes time trying to execute such orders.
It's a trained imagination.
This is why I picked the Infantry.
Damnit should’ve the air unit
Ahmed Kitovaheer thats even more dangerous than infantry
Well now you’d have to deal with artillery bombardment
Nah,become a miner from clash of clans, most safest job.
That's why most people pick civilian jobs .
It's not a dog fight, it's fish fight
Shark fighting might sound more impressive, but that also works.
And actually a dog fight isn't a dog fight. It's a bird fight. Only a dog fight is a well a dog fight. Right?
Leroy Hovatter I’m pretty sure they call them dog fights because every machine that moves when it fights counts as a dog fight
yeah because dogs are known to fly
Its a dolphin fight, those few undertand...
This is truly an inspiration! But why would the British captain use his periscope if his target is submerged?
GregoryTheGr8ster this channel sometimes add weird shit to make it sound more interesting. They didn't need to do it this time as it is interesting enough
GregoryTheGr8ster British bias
It's due to the fact the Torpedo solution computer was linked to the periscope's head directional bearing, So by using the hydrophone they were able to get the bearing, The periscope then just needs to be pointed towards the target bearing. As for bringing up the periscope, that is due to the fact that when a submarine's periscope is retracted it remaining locked in position and can't move.
FOR THE HELL OF IT(?)
Is that why they usually have an attack periscope and an observation periscope?
Germans do some fancy manoeuvres whilst the Brits do the morning crossword.
The internet is amazing. Only place I’ll binge wwii submarine videos. Never woulda thought

THAT'S TRUE- BUT LUCK PLAYED A HUGE ROLE IN IT TOO...
@@daleburrell6273 The luck part was that the British sub skipper was a brilliant mathematician, who also sank another submarine.

Never have heard of that story. Absolutely amazing.
New information to me. Now, I'm going rewatch Hunt for Red October.

TheCanadiaKiwi THAT'S FOR DOGGONE SURE!!!
Wow just wow, that's what we call precise calculation.
British sub: fire!
U-boat: Dive!
British torpedo: no, screw you mate
U-boat: *booom*
I served 7 years on submarines and the one “unknown,” especially during the WWII era was the enemy submarines depth.
That's a suitable name for a legendary ship. HMS venturer
As soon as he said fire I dropped my phone....
wtf me too xD
was about to comment that xD
and then your phone exploded..
I don't understand, why would you drop your phone?
And then you’re phone flew into U-864
One big flaw in the video: Why was the British commander looking into the periscope while launching torpedos?? They were BOTH submerged, there’s no way he could see the other sub using periscope underwater
From what I can tell, the U-864 was using its snorkel at the time, and Launders was tracking the snorkel while he was setting up firing solutions.
@@iciclespikes9332
Yep. Periscope depth is still submerged.
And Torpedo Data Computer which sent gyro values to torpedoes in the tubes relied on periscope bearing.
So even if the Uboat fully submerges to where it can't be seen, the Submarine captain gets updates from hydrophone (bearing to enemy Uboat) and points the periscope that way = Easiest way to keep sending updated data to the torpedoes.
And yes I'm fun at parties.
“Underwater submarine dogfight”

Reality: “Shhh be very very quiet, it’s submarine season”
Shh. Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting submawines.
Too cool. Good job. Proud we were, and are, allies.
That's a big brain move
HMS Venturer later torpedoed U-771 as well...
While both were surfaced.

Making a video about submarines under the water:
It's brighter here
2:21 that dude died very casually
What I simply don’t get is the video showing Launders using his periscope. He wouldn’t have. The very point is that the German submarine was submerged; Launders was using a combination of the original sighting, hydrophones, and dead reckoning. He calculated a firing solution blind and in three dimensions. That’s why he’s a legend.
More of an ambush than a "dogfight" I'd say. . .
is it really an ambush if the enemy is aware of your attack?
What they left out on this was that the Uboat was able to be tracked because it’s diesel engine was malfunctioning giving off a terrible bent valve/broken rod sound as it was using its snorkel
I don't think so. They were under water which means they were running on battery power
@@deborahrauth7629 If the Germans were submerged but using their snorkel, that means that the German sub was just beneath the surface with the head of the snorkel just above the surface of the water to allow the diesel to run. This would also explain how the British sub was able to estimate how deep the German sub might be since the height of the snorkel is limited. In WW2 battery powered electric motors could only propel a sub slowly which is why using the diesel when barely submerged is preferable since it would allow faster underwater speed compared to batteries.
Kennedy Leong that would explain why the British skipper kept looking out the periscope.
@@deborahrauth7629 Initially, the u boats d'sl engines were broken and it was the noise from the broken dsls that gave them away. At the end of the war the Germans had invented the snorkel mast which ment the submarine could be be running its dsls at PD. The venture was given notice the German s/m was in area and it detected the geman submarine on asdic. When the OOW looked through the periscope to find the contact they couldn't see one (because the s/m was dived at pd). You only have to use batteries bellow periscope depth.
@@xiaoka correct.
Oh it's history. I was half expecting two World War II era submarines still in commission somewhere.
Hollywood will probably make a movie out of this..They will Americanize this underwater dogfight.
A "WWII submarine dogfight turns deadly."
That IS the intent, right?
Ok this is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while
I was hoping to hear submarine depth & distances. Now I'll have to research this - as this is like 4D targeting. Awesome shot - wonder if someone calculated the odds of a hit.
There's a bunch of hot men in this submarine

That's one reason (the risks and isolation) why sub duty, at least in the U.S. NAVY is totally volunteer. And why it's extra pay and the best food in the Navy. The Silent Service, Run Silent ilent, Run Deep. Go NAVY! ✌🏻🇺🇸
George B...Please know, the ENTIRE United States military is volunteer.
@@soundspartan the Navy doesn't make you serve onboard submarines. It's an all volunteer force. Everyone that volunteer doesn't make it because they are carefully screened to make sure they are capable of dealing with life onboard submarines. The living conditions onboard submarines is very similar to that of the International Space Station. The only thing they don't have to deal with is the zero gravity.
Now that's badass
when is a dog fight not deadly?
Yes
when its between Chihuahuas?
I never knew this. I was Navy. Never heard about it. Pretty cool.👍🏻🇺🇸
Cool, what rating?
How come all the actors in this series are so handsome? Dang

WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?!!
Those submariner sweaters are awesome!
One thing about him is that he fired two torpedoes, to get that shot, and he calculated most accurately, and he had good intelligence to understand how that submarine will respond when it has a torpedo in the water going for it but he had left to right which way should we have to go about us shouldn't waste
Props to the Cameraman. He time traveled, went underwater with no breathing for 3 mins, and withstood a torpedo explosion.
What a mind in that Sub Commander.!!
Brilliant.
Hey guys Can I see this full series Thanks. Looks Very Interesting
fire!
German: drive in a straight line!
@Oldschool1973 predictable zig zags aren't smart :)
So would the captain really raise the periscope while submerged below periscope depth; and if he did how far could he see through a periscope that is also under water?
This is PRECISELY why you pay attention in math class. 🤓
In reality the torpedo hit directly beneath the conning tower and blew the U-boat in half immediately the wreck came to rest 500 feet deep in 2 big pieces
nope
Wow
What’s long and has seamen a submarine

When you consider that the WW2 U-boat loss rate was 2/3, the best thing you could have done as a German submariner was to get arrested out of town so you would be in jail when your ship sailed. Every mission was pretty much a suicide mission.
Bravo brits!
Ok kiddos that's why you gotta learn all that math in school😎
A Finnish submarine and a Soviet submarine also had a dogfight. The Soviet lies on the bottom of the Finnish Gulf... The submarine "Vetehinen" intentionally rammed the Soviet Submarine ShCh-305 and sank it.

Is t that the idea? "Turn deadly"
Another thing is that I would have not been smart enough to approach the way he did it at the time of the encounter how I recognize them
About time (if they haven't already), they did Alastair Mars's snap shot that blew the bow of two Italian Cruisers. Not that's how to do maths in your head.
"of the second world war" - of all time I'm pretty sure? I like this channel but reading the Wiki article I learned more...
Dying so close to the end of the war. 😳
I probably would have made a bad mistake but I would not sacrifice three torpedoes, someone shot if I can get in close enough to use one, and it wasn't his situation he actually applied himself to the way from which it was with such excellence, and again, I always want to have one or two Torpedoes to get home with but he was so smart he just overcame all of that
Can periscopes see underwater?
Well you wouldn't expect a 'dogfight' to get friendly?!
With their sonar it wasn't much better than shooting in the blind, and I'm not sure how good at depth keeping the Brit torpedoes were (the Americans' were hopeless) and any how they weren't designed to hit a deep diving sub. Very good educated guess, but a whole lot of luck involved there.
He didn't miss hitting that summary at least 60 to 100 just think about that you have to be all you need to do the special, sent and he hooks it with exceptional
Obviously, the British have white turtle neck sweaters in deadly warfare.
Damn what a bad way to go 😨
Wasn't there a submarine movie U something can't remember the number where they did this too?
*ItS BrIgHtEr HeRe.*
I'm not certain that I would have, use three torpedoes, I would have got closer to him if I had enough fuel and enough battery power, but his achievement is quite reflected of England's and God bless the queen
IF he's under water, why do you show him raising the periscope?
I wasn't there for ww2, but I'd imagine most fights turned fairly deadly. just saying.
It's interesting in this era that you have to estimate the target's movement to hit.
