Kent Rollins
Chuck Wagon Cook, Grilling, Dutch Oven Cooking, Cowboy, Cast Iron

I bought a 7 qt Lodge dutch oven and didn't know how to clean, season, or store it.
I'm glad I found this because as an old boy from east Texas I was able to understand this dude.
Thanks!
"Get your cast iron out and cook something for your neighbor ",, if more people did this, the world would be a much better place !! 😜
I wish but it's too expensive here lol
6 years later and this still true
@@Mary-Ann_B_Mabaetlittle cowboah Kent quote for ya: "ya don't get full on fancy!"
Cook them some beans and rice or something. Good food and takes care of the musical entertainment later in the evening
Kent, I so love your fantastic sense of humor! Keep your humor coming, we love it!
Thanks so much Cowboy Kent. I tried making pancakes in one of those newfangled "green" pans and they stuck like I put glue into the batter! But I used a cast iron skillet and they came off with no trouble at all. Cast iron is wonderful if you know how to use it and take care of it. Grandma was right!
My Mom, would have been proud of you.Mom put rice in all her cast if it was to be stored as well as the paper towel and sack and also rice in the salt shaker to keep it from clumping.. You Made me smile with this one ..God Bless...
Them Moms knew a lot of good things. Thanks for watching
Cowboy Kent Rollins : Thanks for the great info on how to store your Cast Iron ! **Loved your bonus segment on the 3 essential pieces of Cast Iron ~ 12" Skillet - 12" Shallow Dutch Oven - 12" Deep Dutch Oven**
My momma always used cast iron, I was always intimidated by it. You have made it seem simpler. I'm gonna ditch my Teflon and give it a try. You officially have a new subscriber.
Thanks so much for joining us
I just found you and subscribed, you're just awesome! I've had a cast iron skillet and a dutch oven for a few years now, and I've barely used them. I didn't really know how. I've had eggs stick, etc. I love omelets, and my non-stick omelet pan has bit the dust. I was going to replace it, went online and saw how expensive a new non-stick pan is, and thought, "I'm going to learn how to cook my omelet in my cast iron this morning". And I DID, and it was perfect and delicious, and didn't stick!!
I grew up with cast iron, I knew how to clean them but not season them properly. I just wasn't confident in my ability to actually cook with them. And here you are, a wealth of information! Thank you, Mr. Rollins, for all the help you offer in every video! I'm now going to confidently cook and bake everything with my cast iron, yay!! Thank you thank you thank you!
What fun! Heaven's going to smell good when you're cooking up there! Wonder if Saint Peter will be the first one in line!
Janet, I sure hope they like fried baked and grilled, its on the menu
Great tips. You probably will think I’m fetched but my folks used cast only as do I and in well over 45 years of use and storage here’s what I’ve found.
Clean
Season
I pick the griddles and skillits of appropriate size and stack. THEY’LL RUST SAYS YOU!
I have cut pieces of high quality corrugated card board, wiped with Grape Seep Oil and allowed to dry that goes in the pan whether another is stacked or not.
I started doing this when I was restoring a real old and small farm house in the early 70’s. Space was at a premium.
I’ve never had rusted iron and since the cardboard was “pre-seasoned” it doesn’t suck the seasoning out of a pan. I’ve gone off for 6 months, came home and All is good. Try it y’all might like it.
God Bless and Good Cookin
Thanks for the tips
Excellent info like always. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
You got me started on cast iron and taught me proper. :) I am now buying some outdoor camp ovens to learn those skills. Thanks for the advice on size. As for me; I love learning new things and I love cooking on cast iron. Thanks for all you two do for the newbies and skilled alike. Make it a great week!
I found your channel about a month ago because of cast iron. I showed my husband one of your videos yesterday and we binge watched your videos for hours. He loves when you dance. Watching you saved me from watching hurting and fishing videos for hours. Thank you so much for the cast iron help and for the laughs. Your very entertaining ❤️
I just bought your book and it's awesome!!! I didn't know the recipes were all adapted for inside cooking. Thought it was full of recipes for cooking at camp :-/
But it's a great book for inside cooking.
I love it. Love how you are and the way you state things you talk about. Puts a smile on my face everytime I tell you.
Thanks Brian
Thank you for sharing so much helpful information on cast iron skillets. I purchased my first cast iron and now *nods* compliments to you, I am sure I can care for it properly. As well as cook in it with your recipes. Thank you !!!!
Hey Kent, you brought a question to mind. My old Dutch ovens have been stored in my shed and admittedly, not in the proper way... (now I know)
Anyway, my ovens stink. I think the old oil seasoning went rancid. So, I need some ideas about getting them back to new-like. I am on a few acres at the edge of town so we build outdoor fires all the time, just FYI.
Thanks also for your videos. Though I am an old Boy Scout I'm afraid time has removed some of my knowledge and experience. You have helped in bringing so much back and teaching me things I never knew.
Bruce if they smell, after they have set for sometime, I burn them out either in a fire pit or a self cleaning oven and the start over. Thank you so much for watching
Hahahahaha! Great video, Kent! I’m learning something new on every video I watch!
God bless you, my friend!
Great tips Kent! Will put them to use!
Loved the way the light was shining through the trees right after you talked about St. Peter. Like he was shining down from above. Love your videos and howdy from the Texas panhandle

You beat me to it . Putting your pans in a paper bag . Back in the day that's all the stores put your groceries in . My mom cooked just about everything in cast iron . She bring the pans to the table and severed straight from them . Now that I'm older I use cast iron a lot . I really enjoy cooking over a fire pit . Or the wood stove in the winter . I put mine in an old refidgeorator in the garage . Coat them with a dab of oil and I haven't had no rust problems . Love your videos sir . And thank you for sharing
This reminds me i need to do some maintenance on the iron i dont use very much. Thanks Kent.
Our pleasure

Some great information in these videos. I have recently got into cast iron, have not used it or ate from cast in about 20 years since the last time my grandmother cooked in it, and boy oh boy talk about a huge difference in flavor.

You made me fall in love with cast iron.
Thank you sooooooo much for it.
Me and my husband are in love with them.
All our skillets with teflon are out of the door.
My only wish is that one day the prices here in the Netherlands are closer to the prices in America.
Most cast iron is at least 2 or 3 times the price here.
Thank you for the great video's, tips and recipes.
Lots of love form the Netherlands.
Wow... thanks... wonderfull tips !
Great info, thanks!

Always wondered about my wife fussing about her iron pots and pans. She has the corn shaped ones and fish shaped ones, on and on. I just always thought man that's a lot of weight. Then I ran across one of your videos and showed my wife. She kept saying see, "SEE". I told you all that food you been enjoying came from those Great Granny, Granny's and Mom's iron. I started going through that Iron and she has all kinds of piece's. We are really enjoying finding out about them not just for the worth but for just the good fortune that all the kin folks always said, "We don't want all that heavy old caked up stuff. So My dear wife, always got them. We got more than 40 different piece's. Sure am glad we came across your channel. We are telling everybody about your channel BUT the in laws.;)
Hey Slim, can't argue with the little woman. Sounds to me like you inherited the gold mine in all that iron. Thanks for spreading the word

Hi Kent I wish I had seen your video 40 years ago when my Scots Grandmother's cast iron frying pan went rusty because no -one knew how to look after it! Thanks fo rsahing your knowledge! ATB. Nigel
Thanks Nigel
I love you!!! You’re a real godly man.
Thank you for watching
As always, another great video. thank you. I feel sorry for those who don't use, or know about how wonderful cast iron is.
Best thing to cook with
Thanks for the tips. You helped me a lot:) I had to subscribe. I love your delivery:)))
Thanks Anita
Hi Kent,
Yea, ... it’s me the corpsman!!! I have picked 99% of my cast iron off the refuse route. It’s sad, but most people went for the glitzy, lite weight, super shiny imported junk and through out the old tried and true Grizwald!!! I live alone so I only use a few of the dozens I saved from destruction. I will have to go through them and see what brands I all have??? Some are in pretty nice shape and others will need some extensive work!!! With your videos I should be able to navigate through the process!!! Thanks again
Art
Thanks Art
Thanks!
Hey there Kent, ya done it again, another winner for sure.
Every time I view one of your videos, I learn a passel of info. I knew about the rice but not about the brown bag and zip ties.
I sure wish I was able to emulate you. Except for the "Cave Man" and the snow episodes, you're always properly dressed in style. I sure admire all the different hat's you have at your disposal. My collection is quite a bit smaller than yours. Maybe its the way your camera is set up.
All in all, another great production.
Many Blessings to the Rollins family.
Stan
Thanks Stan so much and we hope all is well
Your videos are magic but I see now that you’re a magician, as proven by 4:11 - where you pull open a zip tie with your bare hands!!! No scissors or anything. It’s amazing
Thank you
Good stuff
Thanks Kent...
Thank you for watching
Defiantly gonna get me some iron 🇺🇸
Thanks Kent for these videos. I'm an old bachelor and I have been teaching myself to cook and your videos have been a true lifesaver. I like traditional southern and southwestern food and you are the real deal. You aint as pretty as Rachel Ray but you are a great cook, and more imprtantly, a great teacher. I'm thinking about buying a horse just so I can follow your chuckwagon. (And I will help wash the dishes every night)
So glad to help Tim and thanks for watching
😂 great comment
Thank you!
our pleasure Gene
Good deal
Thanks Kent love those tips 🤠 love
The utube channel have learned so much
Ps. You forgot to mention Shan or the begg
Good video Kent... some good pointers and info! By any chance do you use any carbon steel skillets or griddles for any of your cooks? I have some of the Lodge collection and I'm really liking them. Thanks!
Thank you a hundred times over. I teach the dutch oven class at 4h horse camp. Usually this is the only time I use my dutch ovens anymore so after sitting for a year they smell bad and makes the food taste bad. I have always wondered what to do about that because I always have to reclean and oil them. Now I guess all I need are the minion paper towels. LOL
thank you!
Our pleasure
Kent, I've got a different take on your
12 inch set. Since I very rarely cook
outside, my 12 inch set, a 12 inch skillet,
A 12 inch deep (5 qt) skillet, also known
as a chicken fryer. A 12 inch indoor dutch
oven. I also have 3, 12 inch lids, 2 with
the ears for covering the pour spouts.
(The 12 inch deep, doesn't have pour spouts.)
steve
Handy Tips, Kent; Watch 'em Minions ATB Terry God Bless
Thanks Terry
That ain't proper folks..... hehe.... I'm in love🤗 thanks for the video cowboy
You bet
Three wise choice's
sure nuff my friend
I use my cast iron in my camper. What's the best way to store the skillets if you have to stack them?
Just found your channel, binge watching today LOL. I've learned a ton. Thanks a bunch.
Judging by these methods:
Towel Paper Bottom, rice in it, Towel Paper, Stack the other. REPEAT.
Hi Kent: Have you tried the 'chain mail' cast iron scrubber? Got one at 'kitchen store' a while back. Works great! (back ground-- grew up in Weleetka OK in the 1950's; been doing DO cooking forever. Now you Keep up the good works!
Mr. Rollins how many quarts is the 12” shallow Dutch oven and how many quarts is the 12” deep Dutch oven? I grew up using and have always used the cast iron skillets but just recently have gotten into the Dutch ovens for all of our hunting trips and camping trips and was inspired by watching your channel so I do appreciate all of the info on all of the cast iron! The Dutch oven I purchased was the Lodge 12” 6 Quart Dutch Oven which I’m assuming is the shallow but wasn’t sure how big or how many quarts the deep oven was? Thank you and you are much appreciated sir! Y’all have a good one!
Thanks Kent, I'll remember to season it, and keep it dry. Wonder what took me so long to learn that?
Roger thanks for watching
Kent, I love your videos, and recently converted to cast iron from Teflon. I have also bought a few things from your store and they work great. I do have a question about your 12 inch Griswold skillet. What size or number is it? I have started to buy a few Griswold skillets but none are exactly a 12 inch. A Griswold #11 is 12 1/2 inches at the top. A Griswold #12 is 13 3/8 inches. Thank you and God bless.
They measure from the bottom, sidewall to side wall
Hey Mr Rollins. I’m new to cast iron cooking. I noticed all the stuff I’ve watched is just cast. Looking to get a Dutch oven and wondering how you feel about the enamel covered cast iron Dutch ovens. I live in Phoenix so not to many campfire cook outs. Everything basically in oven or stovetop
