It's interesting how Rocky is protective, but knows when to step back. He shields Adrian's head from debris, but let's her fight her own battle when she stands up to her brother seconds later. He loves her, but part of love is knowing when the other person needs to stand for themselves rather than just clearing the path every time. Small detail, but a poignant one.

I met Burt Young once outside the famous Chinese theater in Hollywood. He was really kind, pleasant and easy-going. Everyone kept shouting, "Yo, Paulie!" And he just smiled and waved to everyone.
I appreciate Rocky letting Adrian fight her battle here. He let her say what she needed to say, then defended her when she wasn’t able to (when she ran into her room after Paulie went too far). Rocky is such a great boyfriend and husband, and likewise to Adrian.
I agree on that. plus, I also like the way how rocky defended her, when Paulie went way too far by saying she's "busted" and "not a virgin," that was wrong.
Paulie acted like such an asshole. When Adrian stood up to him I cheered because her relationship with Rocky gave her newfound confidence and opened up the inner voice that was inside her.
She wasn't much of a looker before she met Rocky. He saw something beautiful in her that turned him on. She started fixing up a lot better after that where she didn't seem to care at first. . Remember Paulie even asked Rocky what the attraction was when he first started seeing her.
*I'M NOT A LOSER!* Look how much confidence Rocky gave that insecure girl!! I also like the way he protected Adrian and quickly put drunk Paulie in his place at a certain point, but didn't jump to his girlfriend's rescue right away. He kinda knew she needed to learn how to stand up for herself, especially towards her emotionally abusive brother who'd put that inferiority complex on her over the years. Through Rocky, Adrian realized that she deserved more, much more! For a man who considers himself to have not much of a brain, Rocky has a great deal of emotional intelligence.
You gotta love and admire Rocky! Not only as a good boxer but also a good friend whose always there for Paulie despite he's a crazy asshole. Rocky could easily knock him down but he keeps his peace and lets him live with him. He's a saint and and fighter both! Being angry is not always a personal choice. What if you grow up with drug addict parents and are raped on a regular basis through your childhood? Is it a personal choice then? Think, man, think.
There's a little detail on this scene a lot of people overlook. Paulie's line about not being able to haul meat anymore shows how much he's suffering. He hates working in the freezer. It's so cold he has to constantly drink alcohol just to stay warm, hence why he's always drunk. It also adds onto why Paulie kept asking Rocky for a job with his loan shark, desperately trying to get out of hauling meat. It's kind of tragic in a way.
Paulie goofed up with the drinking, it thins your blood and takes the heat from your body. Warm drinks plus layers (scarf is a must). Cooling or heating you neck up makes your whole body feel better.
Oh yeah, remember seeing that scene, and then Linda's son started fighting back throwing things, but yeah, I couldn't help getting a chuckle from it too :D
You could tell Rock was used to Paulie's shenanigans/drunken mood swings and knew not to escalate, but also had the sense to let Adrian finally stand up for herself and set him straight. So much going on here, awesome scene

Alan Adrian that’s what brought on my depression until I got back to the gym. Everyone around me getting married having kids while no matter how hard I tried things just wouldn’t move for me. I never took it out on anyone though.
“You’re busted!” Like so many angry drunks, he is just blurting out what he knows will hurt Adrian the worst. And he immediately regrets it, which is why he turns to jelly immediately after. Ultimately he does love his sister, but he has a lot of demons of his own.
"I DON'T GET MARRIED BECAUSE OF YOU!" Sure Paulie, Adrian's the reason you're still single. All the ladies would be up on you if it wasn't for your sister!
Plus living with your sister when you're both fully grown adults and SHOULD be married - or at the very least in some sort of relationship? Well, we don't know about Paulie, but we know Adrian is 30 and has never had a real relationship. Although we know there's nothing going on inappropriate, it would be odd if it didn't generate rumours.
I love how protective Rocky & Adrian are of each other. The way Adrian stands up to Paulie when he's insulting Rocky is genuinely sweet & I love how Rocky's not verbally getting involved, just quietly protecting Adrian when Paulie's swinging the bat & when she runs out of the room.
Paule is always awesome, he was a dick sometimes, but he was always in a sarcastic mood and people hated him for that at times. He was a funny straight guy with a classic 70's personality, and the actor Burt Young did an amazing job.
Sumanadasa Wijayapala Oh come on he wasn't an asshole. He straightened himself in Rocky II, got back to the asshole act in III briefly but cameback after that, and after Rocky III Paulie was actually very cool, he was always there for Rocky at all cost.

Sumanadasa Wijayapala true don't forget he stood up to Tommy telling him how Rocky put him in front of his own family, really stood up for Rocky there in Rocky V
Being serious-in this scene Paulie is drunk and just blurted out what he knew would hurt Adrian worst, and immediately regretted it. We all been there. That’s why Rocky didn’t lay into him, he saw Paulie was sorry.
I cried when I watched the film in the first time at cinema. I am sobbing now because Burt Young is gone. Such a good actor. He is the best supporting actor in Rocky series.😢😢😢
I always liked how cool and calm rocky is in this scene. Its not until paulie goes to far that rock gets up and grabs him to intimidate paulie and then just relaxes again
This scene really got me! Paulie threatens to break Rocky's hands, but never does and when Rocky grabs him, I mean he could have said something to him or just went and knocked him out, but he took the high road and just grabbed him to let him know, you don't want to mess with me and just left.
I really like how Paulie snaps at Rocky's it's cold outside. Paulie works in a meat locker after all. Spends his entire day in a place that's cold and stinks to high heaven just so he can afford the place that protects his sister from the cold. The entire reason he keeps trying to get Rocky to introduce him to Gazzo is exactly because he hates the place he works with such a passion and when he comes in angry that Rock essentially says that he has no intention of introducing him, he then naively complains that it's cold outside. No wonder he went mental.
@Silly Bollocks seriously? Rocky protected Paulie by not introducing him to gazzo. If he started working for gazzo he would’ve probably had his fingers broke by Rocky or someone else as he has literally nothing to give: he’s not strong, he’s not smart he would’ve been a liability. If he loaned from him this would again end in his thumbs broken by Rocky as he wouldn’t be able to pay it back. Nothing that happens to Paulie warrants his poor treatment of Adrian or his outburst here.
I think people underrate Burt Young's acting here. It's powerful how he throws this abusive tantrum and then just completely breaks down and crumbles when his meek little sister rises up and challenges him. The way he falls apart when he said, "you're supposed to be good to me..." Gets me every time.
Its very nuanced because he isn't just a "horrible abusive person". He's a loser with a horrible life and a straight up drunk. There's a different between the two. He's not the devil but the same as loads of poor men in that situation. A horrible reality how he treats adrian. This scene always hits me so hard I tear up after Adrian screams at Paulie and finally has enough of his abuse. I watched this movie the other night and when this scene came on I was a mess I always get emotional when I see this scene.
That scene was crazy and serious. I'm glad that Adrian stood up for Rocky. Rocky didn't act up and he stayed out of Paulie's drunk rampage and arguement with Adrian. To be true, it was kind of funny how Rocky showed an annoyed/priceless face from the sibling rivalry/drama at 1:27-1:30 and 1:38-1:45.
Paulie is a tragic charachter. He is trapped inside a life he dislikes, and he doesn't see a way out. He has one friend in the world, who he often abuses and takes for granted (he admits this in a deleted scene in Rocky Balboa); his sister and his job are all he has. He hates his job, he works alone, in a cold, terrible place (a slaughter house). He lives in a rough neighbour hood. Being a protective big brother (all be it not always a good one) is really his only role in life, and makes him feel that he is needed by someone - and he is about to lose it. By a fluke of luck, his friend is getting a way out, and he will take his sister with him, and Paulie must be afraid that they will leave him behind. He set Rock up with his sister (when Rock couldn't connect with her on his own) essentially giving up the only thing he had, and he hoped in return, Rock would give him a hand up. Rock shot Paulie down when he asked him to get him Rock's old job. He then walks in on the only two social relations he has and they are talking bad about him.
I like how the next day Rocky and Paulie get along as if nothing happened lol, the good ol days were like that, now days, people hold grudges like for the whole life
In the defense of Rocky, he forgives everyone. Honestly, he is a freaking saint. While I would like to say I have a similar threshold of forgiveness, in reality, I would have told Paulie to GTFO after Rocky V. I mean... Damn
I love this scene cause it shows that everyone is hurting and just trying to survive life. Rocky exploded at Micky. Micky should have amounted to more in life. Adrian felt worthless, and Paulie could see no future. Just like most people in life.
Thats why I liked the first Rocky movie, it was really realistic in how it showed the way people are in real life, especially in Philly during the 70s.
Its amazing the amount of patience Rocky has with Paulie through this entire scene. He doesn't lose his cool until the last second. (Calm Down Paulie) he says silently.
I always love how when Paulie trashes Rocky, the one person who has shown her love and respect, She FINALLY Stands up to him. That's Real Love! Great Writing by Stallone!
I think we all appreciate what an outstanding performance Burt Young gave as Paulie. Less well-remembered is his performance as Curly in Chinatown. A small role, to be sure, but he nailed it.
Honestly Paulie’s bat swinging skills seems good enough to collect for Gazzo...considering Rocky stopped associating with him after Rocky 2, he should’ve gotten him the job. After all, Paulie did give Rock meat everyday and his sister.
It's interesting how Rocky is protective, but knows when to step back. He shields Adrian's head from debris, but let's her fight her own battle when she stands up to her brother seconds later. Sly, Talia, Burt, Meredith, Carl and even Tony! All amazing in this film! Still one of the greatest movies I've ever seen after all these years...
when he says - you're supposed to be good to me and his voice changes, phenomenal piece of acting
“You are busted. You are not a virgin!” was enough for a woman to have a mental breakdown just a few decades ago. How times have changed.
And now it's a badge of honor to be a s***
it's so funny how rocky is just sitting down and watching Adrian having a go at Paulie 1:39
also at 1:08-1:09
Bet he wish he had some popcorn while watching it!
he knows not to get involved, it’s her fight
Shows how men used to handle those situations.
"it's cold outside Paulie" has me always laughing😂
RIP Uncle Paulie.
I mean... Damn
@@Kratos-GodOfWar very true
@@Kratos-GodOfWar Yeah and that's why A Guy like Paulie wouldn't have your back you jerk
Poignant details. There is no wasted dialogue or characters in the entire saga !! Rest easy, Paulie. Rest easy Burt Young. You were the real deal !!
R.I.P. Burt Young (1940 - 2023)!
Rest in peace Burt Young :(
I like how rocky is just sitting there very calm while both of them are shouting at each other
He will step in if he feels Adrian needs it
I love how Rock just sits there staring straight into the distance like “Now entering another episode of life." 😂😂😂😂
Paulie's voice omg i'm dead
LOL!!
These characters are all in the gutter together. And yet through it all they find a way to love and support each other. What a magical film this is.
2:01 If you stop and hear it correctly, you'll hear Adrain running towards the door like a damn Rooster.🐓🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂*WHEEZES* Yo, Dude! That's funny!
it's cold outside paulie
Paulie be like, "So what?"
Best guy throwing a meltdown
Amazing acting by Adrien. I tear up bc I feel for Paulie despite his shortcomings. His flaws are human and he needed love from his family and friends.
He’s pathetic
She’s a great actress, she was nominated for an Oscar 2 years earlier.
Rest in peace Burt 🙏🏻🥊🥊🇮🇹 😔
Adrian was soft spoken and introverted but tough and honest in some key scenes in this franchise
Man rocky is a good man. He didn’t intervene unless he had to. He was ALWAYS good to paulie’s sister.
This scene is so sad and so relatable because this is the type of toxic environment I grew up in
I've dealt with abuse in the past and can relate to Adrian's struggles and it took her some time to open up to Rocky then trust & love him.
My family was like this. Still love them.
Rest In Peace Mr Burt Young 🙏😥🕊️
I always love how when Paulie trashes Rocky, the one person who has shown her love and respect, She FINALLY Stands up to him. That's Real Love! Great Writing by Stallone!
Burt Young was that annoying yet lovable character. Great actor, RIP❣️🙏🏾
I think we all appreciate what an outstanding performance Burt Young gave as Paulie. Less well-remembered is his performance as Curly in Chinatown. A small role, to be sure, but he nailed it.
2:06 I love how Rocco ends the whole conflict in an instant.
Even if I personally hate Paulie, Burt Young is such a great actor with all due respect. R.I.P. 😢
1:39 rocky is like "i see this every day😪"
Rocky's handsome.
honestly.. when paulie started swinging that bat and going on a rant.. i LAUGHED my ass off.
Best Paulie and Adrian scene - RIP Burt Young
Burt Young and Talia Shire both deserved Oscars for this scene
RIP Burt Young
R.I.P Burt Young 😞
RIP Paulie, you will always be my favorite alcoholic
I love the way Adrian finally snaps at her brother for doing what he does
The way she runs into the Kitchen after he calls her Busted is so adorable😂
Adrian : want a roommate?
Rocky : absolutely 😊
Burt Young was always Paulie. Couldn't imagine anyone else being Paulie than him. RIP a legend!
@02:00 "You're BUSTED!" 😂
"WHAAAT?!"
@@plasticweapon Lol. Totally forgot I made that comment. Just edited it now with a time stamp. Adrian's reaction always had me in stitches.
"I'm not good enough to meet with Gazzo? POOOOH!"
RufusLeakin that part was hillarious lol
Honestly Paulie’s bat swinging skills seems good enough to collect for Gazzo...considering Rocky stopped associating with him after Rocky 2, he should’ve gotten him the job.
After all, Paulie did give Rock meat everyday and his sister.
@@histochronos Adrian wasn't his to give
@JenniVirus yes, but from Paulie’s perspective he saw it that way.
Goodbye Paulie 🙏
“Yo? It’s cold outside Paulie.”
😂😂😇
Real life. I love Paulie. He was a good man. Rocky took him back.
When no one else would've
Paulie was the whole reason why he went broke
Took him back, do do dooo do, took him back
factz!!!!!
king Quan paulie was taken advantage of. I don’t blame him
2:10 "Ehhhhh I cant Haul Meat Nomore"!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
R.I.P. Burt...merry xmas!
Rest in peace Burt Young (1940-2023)
Cut off the funny end...”You need a roommate?”...... “Absolutely”
This scene is so real so many families have had breakdowns like that.
