Here's a fun fact about this episode The Red Ball.
Cultural References:
Wuncler's ancestor is named Prescott Rothschild Wuncler, a reference to Prescott Bush and the Rothschild family.
In the episode, Ed Wuncler voices his complaint that one of the Wushung players is clearly overage due to his massive physical built.
However, Long-dou assures that he is only 12 years old and an aid behind him holds up a birth certificate to verify this. This is a reference to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing and the controversy surrounding the ages of the Chinese gymnastics team members, particularly He Kexin.
Jingmei's face is painted with the Flag of Tibet.
Riley's "calls" a home run, a reference to Babe Ruth's called shot.
The crowd sings "America the Beautiful".
Trivia:
The scene at the end of the game is highly reminiscent of the famous anime series Dragon Ball.
This is the episode with the most injuries; it is also the only episode where Butch Magnus is injured.
This episode is the first since the pilot in which Ed Wuncler speaks directly to his grandson Ed Wuncler III.
Ms. Van Heusen, Butch, Gin Rummy and Cindy do not speak at any time in the episode.
The name Long-dou could be from Chinese 龍鬥 (lóngdòu, "dragon fight").
The city of Wushung is in Chinese 武雄 (Wǔxióng, "martial hero").
Many of the exaggerated super-speed and super-powered kickball moves, especially Huey's final kick and his catch, are influenced by the Chinese comedy movie Shaolin Soccer.
Uncle Ruckus, as referee, cites a racist line from Blazing Saddles when Huey knocks out the kicker at bat.
Despite the fact that the Woodcrest Team are declared the winners, the score remained tied at 8-8 after the final play.
Ming Long-dou is the daughter of Mr. Long-dou, which is not generally how Chinese names work. Almost all modern Chinese names have one syllable for the family name and two for the personal name, with the family name said first, as in "Mao Zedong." which is Uncle Ruckus called Mr. Long-dou "Chairman Mao". However mostly you don't know who Mao Zedong aka Chairman Mao is, Mao Zedong is a Chinese politician, Marxist theorist, military strategist, poet, and revolutionary who was the founder of the People's Republic of China (PRC). He led the country from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976, while also serving as the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party during that time. His theories, military strategies and policies are known as Maoism.
Dante Basco (best known for portraying Zuko in the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender) makes a cameo appearance as Jingmei in the episode.
Probably one of my favorite episodes for alot of reasons.

I love this episode so much, The capitalist angle, my favorite character Huey in the spotlight, the unity between our woodcrest characters, hell even Ruckus' love for the whiteman, the game and the physical comedy and lastly the heavy anime inspiration. All mixes into my favorite Huey episode
I spend about an hour and a half binge watching these folks reactions a day

This episode was inspired by the Anime Samuari Champloo "Baseball Blues" episode. I suggest you guys watch it to see the comparison. In fact, the creator of the boondocks tv series took some ideas for the shows story from the Samuari Champloo series.
For example, the season opening of the boondocks character homage is reminiscent to the Samurai Champloo opening of its characters.
The biggest take away from this episode is the metaphor of the relationship between the United States and China.

I know I’ve said this before, but this is by far one of the BEST show intros… EVER! 💯
Martial Arts have had a huge impact in the black community(black men) from the old kung-fu movies and blacksploitation films and now things like anime. There are a lot of callbacks in the show to some classic films.
One of my favorite episodes, love the Shaolin Soccer and Samurai Champloo references

Great episode, the symbolism is crazy in this one.
Basically it’s a scenario of if China called all outstanding debt against USA. Then we play red ball game which symbolizes war or WWIII they reference this in episode with usage of “ultimate showdown” how episode is USA Vs China for all the stakes

i actually remember curb ball but we didn't do it off the curb we did it off the side of buildings. it always confused me why it was called curb ball and i probably mixed it up and called it curve ball too lol. we would also call it "off the wall" and i would usually call it that because it was less confusing.

@@WellHelloSilly Gmorning ya'll yes maybe it's from my end but it's when Huey meets Ming for the first time it only shows Huey tell her yes he'll play but it doesn't show when she kick the ball at him and what he did when the ball got to him and how he returns it to her it just shows the ball at her feet and him agree to play

If I remember correctly, there may have been music playing over the scene and YT blocked it unless we muted or trimmed out the scene. That's most likely what happened. You're definitely an OG fan to recognize the subtleties 👌🤙-M@

Yo Price! We're from Columbus. It's so cool to meet and talk with someone about something as little as curbball. I haven't heard of ittybounce. Sounds like it might be a variation of what we called "first bounce fly" or something like that. A kid would throw the ball way up high and you had to let it bounce before catching it, but it cold only bounce once. Pretty fun, but certain balls worked better. So what's ittybounce? @WellHelloSilly ittybounce is literally the same thing but in baseball format...so we have a pitcher an ump and obviously a hitter...many folks in the outfield whoever catches it after one bounce gets to come up to bat...if no one catches it then the player remains at the bat if the ump catches it then you switch with them...very fun and different

This is Ed I's first appearance in the show since Season 1.
While everyone seems to love this episode, I actually think it's pretty bad.
I mean, it's entertaining, funny at times, and it's cool to see Huey go beast mode, but I REALLY HATE Huey's characterization here. This guy has seen through facades, known about things he hasn't even seen himself, and even _predicted the future,_ and he fell for Ming's fake-ass sob story. He was (at least, by the words of Wuncler), willing to completely give his and everyone else's freedom away-- which is completely out of character-- for a lying little girl he probably wasn't ever gonna see again. And the fact that she looked back at Huey after telling her "story" before running away-- you already KNOW that bs wasn't true.
And the fact that everything was saved because Huey HAPPENED to understand Mandarin..
Also, this is more of a petty nitpick, but I didn't like the joke where Riley was going for a "home run" and he misses the ball every single time. It's a predictable yet funny joke the first time, but it's ridiculous that he misses _every time_ when people like Robert and Tom landed a kick the first time.

@@WellHelloSilly hell yea! 😂 this bring back memories like PBS kids. If you throw the ball over a vehicle or something it’s extra points. kids in the neighborhood always played curveball. We also played tap ball. Toss the basketball back-and-forth to each other but your feet have to be off the ground when you toss it. If you drop the ball you’re out if you tap the ball with your feet on the ground you’re out.

We called it "Curb Ball" (probably same principle) each person stands on opposite sides of the street and you have to bounce the ball off the curb ONLY (lol 😆) and catch it to get a point. Fun FUN days 🫶-M@
