The crisis of meaning is probably a byproduct of addiction to social media and the destruction of stable family structure. Nihilism, to me, is just motivation to develop something that does matter. It's my life, I can find meaning in it anyway I want to. Is there a way to resolve it? Probably. I'm just not sure if there's a universal answer to that, though.
A crisis of meaning implies - for me at least- absence of it. Being able to ponder reality and our place in it is what drives the notion of personal meaning. To be deprived of it is to be subdued to nihilism. I'm currently not aware of any other ways a crisis of meaning could occur. Myths are there simply to fill the gaps in our understanding, they do not have monopoly over what meaning our lives/existence require and should be discarded as baseless nonsense. The individual meaning we posses are up to us to discover and thus, determine. Factors like your setting, social circle, capacity to accurately perceive reality(though filtered by our bias), health, financial prosperity are some examples of strong factors that not only will shape who you are but also, what your goals and priorities are (meaning). So long as we scrutinize whatever ideas we happen to encounter, filtering out bad ideas and devise systems that help everyone thrive most likely will lead to meaningful lives, having our common wellbeing and personal fulfillment as a common goal. Nihilism is kept at bay naturally when not only having healthy and achievable goals, but also necessary support, be that emotional, means of expanding your circle of influence, strong emotional bonds with loved ones , our basic necessities met and having the means to prosper and grow in many different ways.
There are countless sources of meaning being invented all the time. Why do you have to rely on false ancient crap? There are better things in current day and the best part is that you don't have to sacrifice truth and honesty to enjoy them. Fiction and living a good life can coexist.
I am not really concerned about what any particular person BELIEVES. Do you unnecessarily destroy the lives of poor, innocent animals and gorge on their bloody carcasses? Do you believe homosexuality and transvestism are moral? Do you consider feminist ideology to be righteous? If so, then you are objectively immoral, and your so-called "enlightened/awakened" state is immaterial, since it does not benefit society in any way.

Haha awesome to see you back and you got Peter boghossian on your Channel. I'll have to watch it tomorrow, I'm going to bed and I have work tomorrow. Glad to see you back 🙂
I have to admit, my eyes glaze over at abstract, philosophical discussion. But I am deeply concerned about the real-world, practical instances of widespread beliefs without evidence, like Creationism, or belief in sex-independent "genders". Especially when they directly result in real-world, practical harm, like healthy children having their normal, healthy growth chemically stunted, with no evidence-based diagnostic criteria. Or women and girls losing their Title IX right to fair sports. Or fully-intact male convicted sex offenders, sharing cells with vulnerable women, in women's prison. This is why I respect Peter; one of the few people in the atheist/(self-declared) """skeptics""" space, who had the guts to speak up for simple, eviddnce-based truth, even when he knew it would cost him. Very disappointing these last few years, how 99% of so-called """skeptics""" will uncritically cheerlead for beliefs without evidence, and accept claims with the exact same, 100% perfectly identical standard of evidence, as the standard they've mocked/criticized religious believers for relying on, for decades (and even silence and smear those who point out this total absence of evidence, or the hypocrisy at play). But when those standards prop up claims from THEIR OWN side of the political fence, suddenly no empirical evidence whatsoever, but "it FEELS true, to me!!" becomes a perfectly rational standard of evidence, which we all MUST accept, and which can even act in lieu of (totally absent) actual, empirical evidence, in "medicine". I'm not sure which has been MORE disappointing; People I used to believe to be rational and intellectually honest, self-declared "skeptics", who now actively, aggressively promote faith-based beliefs with no empirical evidence, as being "science", and worse, seem to genuinely believe these evidence-free claims... ...Or those "skeptics" who are smart enough to see what's happening, as the rights of women and girls (and gays and lesbians, and anyone who cares about truth) and health of children, gradually get chipped away, in the name of "just a social construct" with no empirical evidence... But who remain conspicuously silent, because standing up for evidence-based truth would cost them subscribers, and social standing... In 10 or 20 years time, after evidence-based standards have been returned to childrens medicine, this era will reflect on big-name atheists, the same way the Catholic abuse scandals reflect on the clergy, today... People like Boghossian, Dawkins, Shermer, Pinecreek, will be the few atheist creators, still able to stand tall...
I appreciate the Croc. Had a lovely opportunity early to depict the epistemological mysticism of the logico-scientific foundational (groundless) faith system... but does it more & more adroitly ... appreciated the fundament + coherence + valuation of what you count as evidence building of mythologies (whether science, religion, economics, etc)
This is fantastic. So, for me, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with being nihilistic to a degree. I adhere to sort of a cosmic nihilism where we are pointless and the world is devoid of inherent meaning. I create the meaning. And the accuracy, so to speak, of my epistemology lends itself to the meaning in my life. While nothing around me really "means" anything and there is no point to it, I subjectively pick human happiness and wellbeing as my goal (as do most of us as empathy and group dynamics are hardwired into us) and having the most robust epistemology that gives me the most accurate view of reality actually helps me towards that goal that makes me a happier and "fuzzier" person lol. In more simple terms, the more accurate my view of reality is via my epistemology, the more meaning and happiness there is in my life. That is my synthesis of the two and it's all I need. There are layers of things like relationships, personal growth and goals, and becoming a mentally and physically healthier person, that also help me to progress towards a continuously improved understanding of the world around me. I think this is the best possible, for me, synergy of epistemology and the "warm and fuzzies". So I don't combat nihilism, I embrace it because it's true that there is not some inherent meaning. As far as outright, full nihilism (aka nothing matters, I have no meaning I am a shell of a person bla bla), I obviously combat THAT of that's what we are referring to... But being nihilistic and accepting a world devoid of meaning doesn't mean I don't get to have meaning in my life. It's just accepting the universe the way it appears, and making the best of the life I have while I'm here because I WANT to. It's no more complicated than that for me.
As a precociously curious child, I'd often ask my mother what something means. She'd usually reply "oh for gosh sakes, go and look it up in your dictionary." As a young adult, I never realy grasped the expression "meaning of life" as anything other than the definition of the word life. I'd be thinking along the lines of: *life* noun 1. the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death. I.e "the origins of life" Yet still I struggle with the concept relating to how to derive meaning for the series events in a human lifetime. I can't seem to grasp there needing to be any meaning, least not imposed or provided by external means. The best I can derive, is just the ambition to live life and enjoy it well. I've never considered myself a nihilist or had any existential crisis. Yet I still struggle to process this phrase "meaning of life" whenever I hear others use it. What's wrong with me?

Is this "crisis of meaning" something that should concern me as an individual? Should this crisis be seen as an epidemic which is effecting many people, or is it some sort of philosophical problem which no one can solve? For me, honestly just Epicureanism gave me the perspective to find this crisis to be not concerning me personally.
People can just do Epicureanism, it works. Yeah the physics is outdated but the core ethics ideas can be reappropriated for modern people. Epicureanism worked as a cultural "meaning" and was a long tradition.
I'm not sure this "crisis of meaning" even exists. To me it seems like christians projecting their fears of losing God's meaning onto atheists, and using it to explain any behavior they don't like.
Small nitpick: Spinoza was NOT excommunicated per se, as there is no such thing in Judaism. What he was sentenced to is AFAIK to be ostracized, which only has social effect. Unlike Catholic excommunication, no one can tell god that a certain Jew's prayers can't be heard or whatnot. You can only tell other Jews to stay away from the "bad Jew". :)
I just started the video, and it seems like your problem of traditional sources of meaning being eroded has an easy solution : find new sources of meaning. Meaning is subjective anyway. It's something that a mind decides, not something that is objectively true; and yes, even if that mind is God. And this is why people that are born atheists do not struggle with the question of meaning. This is a struggle for religious people that have been told that a powerful god's opinion is very important and built their lives around it, but then end up realizing that this god does not exists. I don't have time to watch further for now so i'll continue later.
About the question of "is sex a social construct?", i'm left wondering if any of you meant gender? It was frustrating to see Peter not realize that morality is subjective, and therefore not a function of whether one understands the world accurately or not (and so not a function of one's epistemology). And yes, morality is subjective even if it's God's opinion : just like meaning, the opinion belonging to God does not make it objective. Also, sorry to break it to you but being smarter wouldn't increase your chances of being a billionaire. What you need to get there is money and ruthlessness.
"We don't have slaves anymore"?? Human trafficking is massive, maybe slavery isn't legal but strangely it's an issue that mainly gets ignored because we like to think we're morally more advanced than our ancestors.
Human trafficking has grown exponentially around the world since the Obama administration destabilized the secular Libyan government with the assassination of Muammar Gaddafi and Islamists there rebuilt black slave markets. Today, thirteen years later, human trafficking has become a problem in Europe, Great Britain, and the United States once again.
@@HenriFaust Wasn't Gaddafi killed by rebels? As far as I remember Libya was attacked by western forces and the share some blame for the instability, but they did not kill him directly.

epistemology does lead to morality, but you have to go to down to the basic axioms. with enough reduction, epistemology becomes self-evident (or as the duck calls it "naturalist"). people who dont align their axioms with their behaviour are considered mentally insane.
Sadly many tangents here, gets very difficult to follow with context switching - you lost me after attempting to discuss meaning as justification of suffering and then getting pulled very far away
About 35:00 i dont really understand why you would put honor and dignity as "a drive" As I studied on the side christianity. The sins are "the drive" that put everyone in danger. Gluttony is the overdrive of Hunger, yet the more you eat the more stamina you have to survive. lust is the overdrive of sex, yet the more you get sex, the more you reproduce Wrath is the overdrive of justice. Yet I have to consider justice as needed as food and sex for the survival of our species
Ironically, a crocoduck would do a pretty good job of falsifying evolution, or at least proving that evolution is not the only source of all species. The problem for Kirk Cameron is that he will probably never find a crocoduck outside of photoshop.
He's always been that way. I don't remember he ever explaining why, but there are many good reasons, such as someone might want to remain anonymous like an extra layer of protection against opponents to his criticisms.
Why do you think it is that Boghossian wont talk to people like me who are educated, self identify as woke and postmodernists and have criticisms of Peters views both directly, but also with respect to the perverse incentives behind his content such as his affiliation with Sovereign Nations, funding with MCC (the Hungarian state controlled university group set up by Orban), and his funding by Chris Rufo? He seems to only ever be willing to platform people who agree with his views and support his narrative, but not those who deeply disagree.
You sure do like whining and crying that people don't find you interesting or worth watching and don't want to talk to you. Maybe instead of whining you could make better content and grow your channel so that people would actually want talk to you in order to reach your audience. You could also try becoming more likeable and charismatic but that doesn't seem likely.
Here's an idea, your first name doesn't need a definition. Why don't you own that "woman" can just as easily fall in the same category as words such as a "first name" and drop the circular attempts to define it?

Is this "crisis of meaning" something that should concern me as an individual? Should this crisis be seen as an epidemic which is effecting many people, or is it some sort of philosophical problem which no one can solve? For me, honestly just Epicureanism gave me the perspective to find this crisis to be not concerning me personally.
People can just do Epicureanism, it works. Yeah the physics is outdated but the core ethics ideas can be reappropriated for modern people. Epicureanism worked as a cultural "meaning" and was a long tradition.
People can only say such things until it's your neighborhood or kid who's affected, but by then it's too late to act to preserve your own interests.
I'm not sure this "crisis of meaning" even exists. To me it seems like christians projecting their fears of losing God's meaning onto atheists, and using it to explain any behavior they don't like.

So why is infinite regress ok exactly? I'd like to know.
Small nitpick:
Spinoza was NOT excommunicated per se, as there is no such thing in Judaism.
Human trafficking is massive, maybe slavery isn't legal but strangely it's an issue that mainly gets ignored because we like to think we're morally more advanced than our ancestors.
there is still a very active slave trade in africa, the middle east, and asia.
You have slaves? Self-reporting.
@@HenriFaust Wasn't Gaddafi killed by rebels? As far as I remember Libya was attacked by western forces and the share some blame for the instability, but they did not kill him directly.
@@hermannhinterhauser1227 Rebels instigated, funded, and organized by the USA as a matter of official US foreign policy, because Gaddafi was trying to sell his oil without taking US dollars. It's during an interview in which Hillary Clinton as head of the State Department bragged about killing Gaddafi that that, "We came, we saw, he died," clip originated.
epistemology does lead to morality, but you have to go to down to the basic axioms. with enough reduction, epistemology becomes self-evident (or as the duck calls it "naturalist"). people who dont align their axioms with their behaviour are considered mentally insane.

Sadly many tangents here, gets very difficult to follow with context switching - you lost me after attempting to discuss meaning as justification of suffering and then getting pulled very far away
There are a lot of standard philosophical concepts here that are implied to be discoveries.
About 35:00 i dont really understand why you would put honor and dignity as "a drive"
As I studied on the side christianity. The sins are "the drive" that put everyone in danger. Gluttony is the overdrive of Hunger, yet the more you eat the more stamina you have to survive. lust is the overdrive of sex, yet the more you get sex, the more you reproduce
Wrath is the overdrive of justice.

That that that... The the the the
As soon as read Boghossian name I knew it was going to be bad. But dear lord... Philosopher and public(!?) intellectual. LOL!
Explain
Beghossian makes good content on youtube wdym?
why anonymous? ... did not say

Mr Boghossian has allot of sneaky beliefs that he just doesn’t call religious.
