  • Day 4 before the big solar upgrade. Tonight, we start with the cabling of the DC circuit breakers which will connect the two new solar charge controllers to the main DC bus bar system. THis new upgrade almost maxes out my switchboard and there is only one space left now. Time to keep working on this PowerWall 2.1, I guess...
    It also kept raining the whole day long. Not good...

    For example DC breaker between battery and inverter, battery can supply and inverter can supply when battery is being charged.
    Or Breaker between MPPT and inverter and so forth....plz :P

    I find it interesting you did not go with a hybrid all in one Inverter. Victron seems to require a plethora of external stuff they can charge you for. As an example, a single MPP inverter includes TWO MPPT controllers up to 600V! And you can parallel many of them. Internal Bluetooth and WiFi. It simplifes all the cables and costs.

    Andy….you are a big help to me to understand,a lot more than a few months ago but..
    I tought that the breakers are coming between solar panels and MPPPT’s and from there to batteries
    But here it’s look different…
    From panel to MPPT’s to breakers to busbar
    What’s the reason for this or do I missed something
    And also what size of DCcable,4 or 6 mm,do you use between last panel and MPPT or breakers
    Thanks
    Marc

    Hi Andy, as a novice off-grid user I have questions related to securing the solar panels. I have 6 panels of 360 watts (Victron) which are connected as follows: 3 panels are connected in series, the other panels are also connected in series. I connect the two strands in parallel. To fuse these 6 panels I would like to use fuses but I don't know what amperage they should be. The six panels together have an open terminal voltage of 142.29 volts. Can you help me out which fuses I can use for this?
    Many thanks for the educational and fun videos. You are a loyal visitor in my living room when I watch the videos :).

    I like the disconnect switches. Probably fused/ thermal type circuit protection. Test them at 50-90 % of their rated load capacity. You want to see if they burn or melt when short circuited. The protection device should be the weakest link in the circuit.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      It will be just for emergency shutdown. All maintenance, I'm usually doing at night and disconnect with no load.

    What's the purpose of using 35mm2 cable on one side and 25mm2 on the other? If 25 is sufficient why use the more expensive one on the other side?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Рік тому

      That is part of the whole battery shelf design to stay flexible. I may upgrade the breakers to 100A at some stage.

    • @keyem4504
      @keyem4504 Рік тому

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I see. But then the 25mm2 would be too small, wouldn't it?

    • @anthonyrstrawbridge
      @anthonyrstrawbridge Рік тому

      It is because the cable length and diameter have known current carrying capacity based on voltage values and associated losses due to resistance and thermal expansion. Basically, he subscribes to the prescribed data of known wire gauge standards. In this way, he will accomplish the number one goal of minimizing faults and losses. In his demonstration he chose to use 35mm lugs on 25mm cable even though he had 25 mm lugs available. Why? It is because the rules set forth a discernable outcome compiled which contrasts technical experience in lieu of circuit integration and the integrity therein. In practice, the engineer will experience these limitations during practice conversely the engineer will miss and fail to identify these during the design phases.and so the practitioner trump's the non practitioner in this way. No one will write it in a text book....it is why you can be great! Quite frankly, you draw a better question as to the decision to change from the 35mm cable coming into the breaker too the 25mm cable between the breaker and the charge controller. Excellent question indeed! The answer lies at the circuit breaker where a decision towards best practices ensues # integrity!

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Рік тому +2

      @@anthonyrstrawbridge That is not the case. As explained, I have used 35mm cable from the bus bars to the breakers and 25mm cable to the MPPTs. Both cables have the appropriate ferrule crimped 35mm and 25mm ferrule.
      Using 35mm consistently from the busbar to all breakers (even the 10A breaker is wired with 35mm at the input) makes it far easier to replace a single breaker to a different value when requirements change in the future. In such a case, I can just replace the breaker and don't need to replace the cable.
      It's a 63A breaker I'm using so even a 16mm cable would be sufficient. It is not only the current carrying capacity of the cables you have to consider but also the voltage drop across the cable depending on the length of it.
