My thumb is moist, my melon is squeaky. Let's do this.
My body is ready.
Why does EVERYTHING ALWAYS have to come back to sex? Chill people!
Do you always swear when posting comments? Tacky, tacky. Do you even eat honeydews or just troll? This explanation was quick and accurate.
Hahaha
You were 100% correct! I did the squeaky test and it was just perfect! Thanks :)
Could be used for a turkey call also, I was showing my husband and he came up with that. Thanks for the info on the melons.
Thank you! Can't wait to try out your advice!
Thanks heaps! I have three honedews growing in my garden now and I have been unsure when to pick and eat them!
This is a great method, but can you please demonstrate how the unripe melon sounds compared to the ripe one? What not to look for in a melon is just as important in order to choose a sweet melon at the supermarket. Thank you.
Get your own melon
Very usefull information
10/10 would recommend
Keep it up Produce Guy
Sick kitchen
Thanks, I always wondered how to tell.
Thanks for the video, ProduceGuy!

It worked! thank you!
I like your kitchen..thanks for the tips.
Produce Guy...You Rick Thank You!!!
I'm trying to grow my own first time ever and you showed me the simplest way thank you.
However I'm also wondering how the unripened ones sound. lol for me it's cause I've never done gardening before and next year I want to do better, also I hear the place has lots to do with the growth I live in north Tx always hot to hotter temps any advice is welcomed thx
You can put the seeds with what you scoop out into a strainer and get a serving of juice.
Thanks for this.
Thank you sir ver informative i hope you are excelling in life
Nice trick. Will be using it tomorrow when I go shopping.
ramairluvr no please .. lol . Don’t want to catch people licking their fingers then grabbing these melons 😩 . I’ll never touch them again !
Thanks so much!!
Wow. Thank you.
wow that looks so delicious
i am going to buy another honeydew from costco
Thanks
Excellent video! Now I know.
"Keep it fresh." lol I subbed.
I bet the fruit in your house is amazing.
Interesting thanks!
COOL! Good to know.
i just tried the squeak test...not as high-note as yours...so it must not be ripe yet. also some areas on the melon don't squeak at all. Thanks for the ingenious tip.
"The melon is sweet, and delicious." Love the way he delivered that.
good
I've been using this trick at the grocery store for years. Especially in 2020.
Can Honeydews ripen ok even after they get picked from the vine? I picked mine a few days ago, and I haven't cut into it, yet. It looks ripe...I'll try the test. But if it isn't ripe, will it ripen on it's own just sitting in my kitchen?
Great !!now can you show how to tell if a watermelon is ripe!! Thanks for the vid
How do people figure stuff like this out hahah - thanks for the tip!
Doesn't work.Just smell it.
Melons got this fur that falls off when ripe it squeeks without that
So does it get more yellow after it sits around awhile?
I have a squeaky melon! :) Thank you!
Mine squeaks but at a much lower pitch. Think it's ripe? Thanks
Is the part you eat supposed to be crispy or soft?
Nice tip =)
I love honeydew I love all melons
Honey there's a great but I'm I'm grown grown the new melon which is the orange do it looks like a honeydew but it's the color of a cantaloupe inside how do I know when they're right
Thank you for an excellent video, I enjoyed very much learning about knowing when fruits are ripe.
My melon wasn't as ripe as I thought what do I do can I freeze it to make smoothies
What about when it’s white and partly green in the inside?
Hey, produce guy, my frutarian friend says that when a honeydew is ripe it surely will NOT squeak, and the skin will wrinkle a little when you run your thumb over it. Personally, I've had a few squeaky ones and so far, no good ones!
Thank you thank you thank you!
Bad melons no more :)
Thank you!!! Squeak squeak
You're awesome! Thank you!
Sorry for the crude and blunt comment. Your The only one that actually knew a method and ill try it again. The melon had a slight yellowish tint to it and as i said it did make a high pitch squeek. The melon probably could've used a few more days i/m/o. Not a total loss as the inner part of the melon was still edible. Thanks for tips hopefully better luck next time right.
My new sneakers squeak when I come out of the rain and walk into Walmart. LOL
Doug M it's been my experience that most shoppers at Walmart are quite ripe, even the ones who don't squeak.
you just saved me a lot of money!! Thanks so much! :)
the best melon - honeydew
Ive never seen anyone cut melon 🍈 same as me before FINALLY LMAO
Hi there. I have been having trouble with my honeydew. A few weeks ago (before I found this video) I bought a honeydew without any idea how to tell if it's ripe. I cut it up and ended up with half the chunks flavorless, tough, and inedible :-/. After finding this video, I went to the store and did the thumb test and found one I thought was nice and squeaky. It seemed nice and green and juicy when I cut it up, but the chunks are now really mushy and not very flavorful. What do you think I am doing wrong? :-(
Not waiting long enough for it to ripen or waiting too long lol. Fruit is tricky and frustrating
That’s because he is full of 💩
When is it overripe?
I cannot wait to see if this actually works because this is toooo simple
I just checked my melon and no squeak.
It should have a sweet smell at room temp, and if it rattles when you shake it which means the seeds are loose inside.
True about the sweet smell - sort of permeates the air. I just don't like to have anything OVER-ripen, especially a banana. Can't stand it! So it's hard to catch ripeness when it's just right.
I keep mine on the kitchen table so should I put it in the refrigerator before I cut it?
No refrigerator
Thank for your video I love honeydew but I'm alway getting one that you can't eat and are not sweet and it become trash.
You don't have to pull your thumb on it. Ripe ones have no wrinkles on them, they smell fantastic from the outside, they have some yellow coloring, and they have a LITTLE bit of give when you push on the ends. If they are too mushy they are overripe.
Man I'm so jealous looking at that ripe melon..lol I just brought a melon thats terrible , Now i know , thanks..
it squeeked on like the 5th sroke. IS IT OK?
Henckle knife?
I'm cracking up about some of these comments, and I thought I was easy. All I needed was a breeze.
No explanation as to why a squeak when you rub your thumb on the melon is an indication of ripeness.
I thought I had mentioned in the video that the skin becomes tacky as it ripens. That tackiness is what creates the squeak.
***** There is no mention of tackiness in the video, so thanks for clarifying.
I am concerned about leaving saliva on a melon that you did NOT select and leaving it for the next shopper. This could spread disease.
unripe honeydews will squeak
I took this guys advice and dragged my thumb across the melon and it squeaked. So I cut the melon open thinking sweet returns. Boy was I majorly disappointed. GODDAMNIT......UNRIPE MELONS SQUEAK!! WTF!!
right, it did in this video 🙄. ppl r just so lame.
can show a difference in sound between a ripe honeydew and a unripe honey dew
I think an unripe one isn't going to make much of a sound because the skin will still have wrinkles. When they get ripe they start getting yellow, and they have very smooth skin.
Reverse aging...smoother skin with age!
What does an unripe one sound like?
Great question!
you are wrong about the squeak test i just went by your mentioned method and it failed..wasnt ripe at all insideso squeaky it screamed and taste like the rine all the way through the melon
For anyone who is watching this video today I would like to add this. You have to do that thumb test then in the store. Because melons DO NOT continue to ripen after they are picked. So You get what you buy.
Thank you :D
honeydew is so delicious
my honeydew was squeaky when I rubbed my thumb against it but it was far from ripe. I am very disappointed. :'(
read the reply from Hal337. It says" UNRIPE watermelons squeak", not ripe ones.
thank you I've been 3 years trying to figure how to tell if a honey dew was ripe. in Florida down around Port St Lucie the farmers markets pick them way to early. they are always hard and no taste. please make sure your customers are getting ripe mellons all mellons
Hey I can't find any information on Fonzy melons. I've never had them before and got 2 for $5 organic. Now I need to know when to eat them!! Help! 😃👍😉
Fonzy melon is a 'Canary' type of melon. It is ripe when it yields to gentle pressure on the end of the melon, like we would for the Honeydew or Cantaloupe. Not sure that it has a smell or not. Beautiful yellow color on those when they are mature. Use them like you would another melon. Cut it open, scoop out the seeds and enjoy or cut it up and serve as a fresh dessert or in a fruit salad.
Thank you so much!!
If you put a damp towel under the cutting board, it will not move. Much safer for you.
I'm imagining myself doing the steak test at the groceries...and getting arrested
I watched this and tried the rubbing test. It worked! However my honeydew was orange inside and tasted somewhat like a cantaloupe. It was delicious, but is that a certain type of honeydew? I was expecting green!
Also: I watched another video after this and the guy did the same rubbing test, but he said the squeak meant it's not ripe. He didn't say anything about cleaning you thumb of oils. I tested the two I bought yesterday, and one squeaked a lot, loudly, the other was less squeaky and a bit harder. I think your test works, so I am confused why this other guy says it the opposite. it is the oils on your skin? This was helpful anyway. Thanks!
It's the 'tackiness' of the melon skin that is the clue in this. Not sure why someone would give a tip just the opposite. This is a proven method that I've used for over 30 years.
That other guy is just confused. I was taught that method by an old-timer in the business back the the 1970s, and it has always worked for me. As for your orange honeydew...you got a bonus there. That should have been labeled "Orange Flesh Honeydew" and they are usually sold at a premium price. Test still works on that variety. When those came out for the first time, we were pretty excited down at the produce department. Great flavor! Thanks for the questions. Enjoy your melons this Summer!
Uh you know it is also physically possible to buy a bad fruit ( ͡°╭͜ʖ╮͡° )
He has one dislike...what's to dislike?? some ppl are just never satisfied
i love u
I've cut up an unripe honeydew(bought it half cut). what should I do with it?
Following for the answer.
@@jordonwalsh1245 he asked 6 years ago...don't think y'all getting an answer here
Dumb all honeydews squeek i tested it over 20 all squeeked some were not ripe
if it does not smell sweet it is not ripe. if it has a noticeably sweet smell than it is perfect. works every time. controversy over. you are welcome
Not the honeydews.
Lol good way to spread germs 🦠, especially this year. Yikes!
Am I being Punk’d?
The FDA says it is super important to wash and scrub anything you are going to cut into. Otherwise any contamination on the outside of the melon, tomato, avocado, etc. will be dragged onto the fruit or vegetable that you are cutting. Remember a few years ago when cantaloupes sickened a bunch of people with Salmonella or E-coli??? I forgot which one it was now. The Produce Guy forgot to mention thoroughly scrubbing and washing the cantaloupe first. (before cutting).
i cut my melons the same way thought it was a secreat
Awe man I don't have thumbs
That honeydew flesh looks too white to be sweet. I just cut one open that I grew myself and it was nice and green, but was not soft or sweet. I never really watered the plant either so it should've been concentrated sweetness. I can't ever buy one from the stores either they're always unripe. I guess I'll just have to stick to the pre-cut stuff that's expensive as hell
you know the video is bogus when he doesnt have an unripe example to show you the difference ... and 100 people in the comments saying, "uhhhhh it didnt work"
I came here because l bought a huge melon at Costco and want to make sure l cut it at its ripest
Im not saying your a liar, but the squeek was 100% of a fail. Mine squeeked plenty loud, i had it for 6 days. Melon not ripe at all....any other techniques lol?
Yeah this didn't work for me :/ Mine squeaked right away and certainly wasn't ripe at all.
but lick your fingers and touch food in the store is not very polite i think
let me know when ya eat the rind. How many people you know eat melon rinds???
true but i know people that would react more than me since the mouth is the place on the body that have the most bacteria :)
also I've been taught to wash my fruits and veggies before consumption.
or maybe boil it before consumption would be better
actually, buy the whitish one and bring home, leave it next to the stove for heat and let it turn yellowish :)
I got a squeaky thumb. Guess I'll have to eat that instead. Bit of salt. Hmmm. Painful but delicious.
well I wouldn't try eating someone if they were wrinkled or not, just sayin. I know, that's all the world needs in another smartalic right? :) Thanks for the video mellon man.
please don't all try this at the grocery store..lol
