    In this episode of Creating A Great Tone for our Line 6 Helix, I take a look at using the Preamp only blocks as Overdrive pedals with other amp models. By utilizing the preamp blocks in this manner we open up a lot of other tonal options by mixing and matching one style of amp preamp with other amp models. In the video I show a couple of examples and compare with the amp models themselves. I really hope you enjoy the video and find some great new sounds out your Helix using this technique. As always, thanks so much for watching :-)

    I know I've thanked you so many times before but thank you for giving all this info to us for free. It's basically a masterclass for the Helix. You totally could have charged money for all of this info! So I thank you for providing your wisdom for free!

    Great lesson!,Jason. Really enjoy the Plexi preamp into the US Double norm. Thanks for all the lessons.

    This is hands down the best thing I have discovered in my 3 years with Helix. I have struggled building a live preset with a good clean tone and a good hi-gain lead tone without using 2 different amp blocks. I could do that but I always found it ended up sounding too far apart, tone wise. Using the preamp of a BE100 into a clean-ish Hiwatt gives me the coherent tones I was looking for. Awesome!

    The video we didn't know we needed! Very cool. The preamped tones have that chaotic, super saturated "Live Double LP in a Sports Arena" tone that's so hard to get from a modeler.

    Another great video Jason and a really wide open topic concisely demonstrated. Thank you :) I have been guilty for too long of deep diving into Helix possibilities and your videos have saved me a huge bunch of trial and error and provided smart shortcuts to successful programming. I rarely watch when logged in so don't get to comment or say thanks as often as I should but felt I ought to on this one especially. Keep doing what you are doing buddy and wish you every success and good health for 2020.

    Good stuff!! The tones using the preamp sound more authentic to tube amps; specifically the tube compression. Definitely going to try this!!

    Love love LOVE this video! I think it's great that you're looking at Helix as a sound architecture platform instead of confining yourself to "conventional" pedalboard order. This idea could also be used for people who are running their Helix into their favourite amp, using the preamp blocks like an "amp-in-a-box" overdrive pedal.
    I just got the HX Stomp a few weeks ago and have been playing around with similar ideas; in theory, any block that has a "Level" control can be used as a boost, either before or after the amp. Interesting stuff, especially when you start using Cab blocks as tone-shaping boosts. Think outside the box, think inside the Helix!
    Keep up the great work, and thanks for the great ideas :)

    Great idea man! Although I would guess the only sacrifice is DSP allocation, but hell some of those tones sound great! I would love to see the addition of power amps only as an option to the Helix. Kudos Jason!

      Thanks so much :-) I have never had too much of a problem with DSP, but yes it could be an issue depending on the rest of the preset. I also would love to see power amp models added also!

    Interesting experiment! But I think the combined amps all sounded kind of messy and fuzzy and I prefered the amps alone. But thanks for sharing!

    On the subject of preamps what do you think about just using the pre amp alone in the signal chain or maybe with a cab. I tried it alone and got a nice clean sound but I’m unsure of the correct use for the pre amp blocks….
    P.s. I think the penny has just dropped , correct me if I’m wrong but the Preamp blocks would be ideal for the 4CM into a power amp where you just want to use the preamp section of a model and not the whole amp block which would colour the real power amp sound somewhat ….

    cool video Jason. Thanks. I see your studio is shaping up nicely. BTW what office chair did you get? does your arms fold up/out of the way? if not how do you like it when playing guitar with the arms in the way? Im looking for a comfortable office chair that can have the arms fold up & out when in the way or not needed.

    Great video, Jason. I just started experimenting with this on my HX Stomp, so this was really helpful. Question: would you recommend using parallel paths on the Stomp with perhaps the preamp block on one path and the amp with cab in the second? Or should everything just be on one path? Thanks very much!

    Just one question: in an Interview with a line6 guy and in the manual they say the Master knob in the amp settings is considered the real Master on an amp, the channel volume instead would be just the Volume knob for the helix output/internal gain. If this is so then putting a Master on 10 means in the real world your ears would be blown away and the breakup is very different to for example pushing the front end... so please let me know, why you choose to put Master on 10 and bring the Channel Vol. down? my exprience is with the Master on 10 you get a lot of Compression, with the channel Vol on 10 you get more dynamic. please comment!

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  4 роки тому +1

      I put the Master on 10 so that I was pushing the models power amp section to the max. Channel Volume is simply the volume control for the amp model without affecting the tonal qualities.

    Interesting. To be honest I've never tried to include a preamp block in a preset but worth trying according to your video.
    Side note 1, I'm also impressed by the versatility of the variax, how's the neck compared to the pacifica's?
    Side note 2, everytime I use the looper I feel like the looped tone is not exactly the same as the input tone although when I record the Helix, the tone is exactly the same. Any idea why?
    (Not on 2.82 yet? ;) Am I the only one to upgrade asap to new firmware releases?)

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  4 роки тому

      The JTV89's neck is a little thinner than the Pacifica's, nice and fast! I have not noticed a difference in tone when using the Looper. I will update at some point, just haven't has a need to yet.
