What's left of the China Clay mines that once dominated the industry?

- The china clay mines in the centre of Cornwall once dominated the global industry for the material. Cornish china clay could be found in a variety of products, from the glossy surface on photographic paper to ingredients in toothpaste and skincare creams. The chances that you have used Cornish china clay without realising is very high.
Since the 1990s, when the pits employed over 4000 people, a rapid decline in the industry has led to the pits around St Dennis to employ less than 1000.
An industry digging up around 65,000 tonnes of clay annually for nearly 200 years has left the landscape looking more lunar than Cornish.

Great video and loved the history of it. I'm a big fan of old buildings and castles but for some reason I like to see the old quarries and workings, thanks.
Thank you. The quarries create an almost lunar landscape in the middle of Cornwall - there's something quite hypnotic about them.
Nice video ; thx for sharing
Thank you so much for your support and for taking the time to watch and comment. It means a lot to me!
a great place to live with families, far from the city and from poisonous civilization
It is a wonderful place to live - although there are high levels of deprivation in the area.
Thank you for stopping by.
Brilliant mate and a great subject. why has it declined? imports?
Cheers Johnny.
The official reason for the decline is increased costs off production, but more likely it’s cheaper elsewhere.
@@StuFliesAroundCornwall same old story eh? great work mate be an ideal spot to film a sci fi movie lol
@@johnnymac26 definitely. I could see a few Doctor Who episodes turning up in the future.
I’m hoping to capture some of the pools there one day. They’re a brilliant blue colour.
