This all started about 2 years ago when a dead standing cedar tree fell and landed on the roof of my sawmill shed, smashing the roof in, breaking the back window, and leaving me with a tree to clean up. This is a unique type of cedar - it has no bark on it, no limbs, and is blackened as if it was burned (but it hasn't been). As I started bucking it up, the thought crossed my mind about tossing it on the mill to see what it would be like, and I was blown away by how good the wood still was. Not only that, it was actually the most beautiful cedar I'd ever seen! I milled it up to keep both live edges intact, and this all got me thinking and wondering what it would look like as siding material!
The first structure to side on the cliff was my little shed I build, which ended up turning into a little camp shelter for me. This shed would allow me to stay overnight on location to allow me more time to work out there, as this property is a long way away from home property. I loved the look of this siding, so I knew it would also be what I would use on the actual cabin as well.
I do have some of this siding already out on location, but because I am still not 100% decided on how I am going to install it (vertically or horizontally), I wanted to have more on hand just in case I need it.
I'd like to continue gathering up as much of this cedar as possible, especially the stuff on the ground so that I can get it and use it before it rots.
Does anyone know why this cedar is like this? I think someone said it's a type of fungus that attacks the tree, but I can't seem to find out anything for myself on this. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway, if you find this stuff and have a sawmill, definitely mill some up!!
I also put my little battery chainsaw to the test, and man that little saw kicks butt!
We have more bad news for Lenny - honestly, that poor little doggy just can't get a break. It's one thing after another for him and my heart is hurting for the guy right now. 💔 I will update his condition in a future video.
Thanks for watching and see you in the next video!
    M 💕

Michelle, I am 77 and have been active my whole life in and out of construction, running (quit that 25 years ago) hiking, you name it. I live now with all the aches from past excessive physical labor. And now I have a mini-excavator to do the hard work. By noon I’m ok but you know what I’m talking about. So PLEASE, forget your pride or your time schedule and use all those wonderful machines you have. When we are young we are not bulletproof. Take it slow, use the machines. When you are in your 70’s and still an active person, you will be glad you did.

    • @farside1951
      @farside1951 10 місяців тому

agree....worked with chain saws for most of my life....there wasn't anything physical I was scared of. I still am active however take many supplements and build sets for a theatre company building sets....I'm 72 and retired yet I have a lot of issues now.....had to stop playing my accordion 3 years ago because of a worn out rotator cuff. Rehab is slow at 72 however I'm back on track again and playing up to two hours a day....but yeah, your injuries creep up on you. Now i put in a 4-5 hour shift and I'm pretty much done.....used to work 14 hours a day climbing mountains and cutting underbrush with axes and chain saws. Michelle you are a physical specimen beyond compare....however we certainly aren't bullet proof.

Hey, Michelle. I think it is impressive that were willing to admit that you got scammed. The bad guys are so good at making things seem legit. And what really sucks is they prey on older people, (which of course you are not). In my line of work with my regular job, I see it all the time. Thank you for presenting detailed information on the subject! Great job with the video!

They were very good at what they were doing, and yes, it breaks my heart that the elderly get taken advantage of the most in these situations. I was very lucky.

All of us who played hockey do the 'sniff' test as we pulled out the equipment from the bag... It's a habit which is hard to break.
SO pleased you are mentioning the battery-powered chainsaw in positive terms; Stihl, Greenworks, the brand doesn't matter, just that more folks begin to switch and use them!
We've got an 'old-man' with health problems; our Aussie-shep is 13 now, (or 14, he was a rescue, and the shelter wasn't certain of his age) unfortunately, he's declining as well. Our mission is to make his days happy and safe for as long as possible.
Batten down the equipment soon, Old Man winter comes quickly to the Koots.
Cheers from a transplanted West Kootenay guy now in the Willamette Valley.

At least Lenny was able to open his eye again. Sad to hear about the glaucoma though I will send a payer up that leeny won't have to loose an eye. His little tail wag when you asked if he could do that was so sweet. It made me think that I bet that even though Lenny couldn't open his eyes he was still feeling loved by you and Steve and that was his way of letting you know that he loves that you two love him so much and are willing to do what it takes to humainly help him live his best life. You, Steve and your guys dogs and cat are so blessed to have each other. Oh and with you talking about not having a wood working shop to work on projects in the winter made me think that maybe building a shop for that purpose should be your next build. Question is where would be a good place for a shop?🤔 Thank you Michelle for sharing another video with us. May y'all have a good one. Have fun take care

Hi Michelle, Everyone. You can get that wood to glimmer like a showpiece using a super sharp/ "smoothing" hand plane. It doesn't take long. Nothing make wood sparkle like a hand plane with a super polished blade edge. The mirror finish on the apex gets transferred to the wood. No sandpaper will ever come close to the finish you get with a sharp plane. If you try it, you are gonna like it. It feels so good as it glides and slices. It's hard to stop once you get into it. Making shavings is so much fun.
The idea is to use the fine abrasives on the plane blade and then the blade on the wood. It makes the wood come to life in insane ways. I have found myself staring at even pieces of humble construction lumber in awe after taking a paper thin shaving off to reveal the hidden luster of it's inner structure. Oiling it will take everything to another level.
Ask and I can respond here with some detailed instructions on how to get the glimmer. Rob Cosman has lots of youtube vids on planing that would be way better at teaching than anything I can say. He taught me how to make a plane dance. There are lots of others. Paul Sellers, wood by wright....
You will need a half decent plane, don't impulse buy the cheapest one on ebay(or princess auto!!) and expect it to actually work as a tool. Ask me how I found that out, twice ;) Wooden body planes can be awesome and cheap but you have to learn to use them. I have one, don't use it as often. There's a learning curve. Busy bee tools has some that look nice, for all of us here in Canada. Haven't tried one yet.

Glad to hear that you do take the tension off of the blade when not using it. I'm a woodworking machine technician and I do recommend to my customers who have bandsaws that they back off the tension if they are not going to use the machine for a few days. While I don't think that you have to do so every day, it is a good habit to have if you don't know when the next time you are going to cut because you could forget that you left the blade tensioned and next thing you know a month has gone by and leaving that tension on for that long without running it can cause problems.

Your work ethic is just like mine with all the physical labor. Working alone, you just have to do what you have to do. Only thing is, at 59, I sure can feel it by the end of the day! I see a building project in your future in the form of a woodworking shop! CARPE DIEM! The news at the end about Lenny was not as bad as I feared. That was a relief. Good morning Michelle, Previously I told u that the Stihl electric chainsaw would become a favorite for you. I have cut down trees a little smaller than the one you cut up on the ground with my battery saw. As I said before, it’s become my go to chainsaw, my Stihl MS 270 Farm Boss which I loved to use has become too heavy and hard for me to control safely at my age. I also carry chain bar oil and an extra battery when using my battery chainsaw, especially went Jeeping in the back country. I am so sorry that Lenny is having all of his problems, wish the best for him. Your channel is 1 of 3 of my favorite YT videos sites to watch to relax. With all these wars going on, it never ends.

All I can say and do is prayers for Lenny. May the doctors come up with a solution to slow down this problem. And for you Beautiful, you have to be a vert powerful and strong lady, moving those heavy logs around. Your leg muscles must be powerful and big to handle everything you do daily. You are a Beautiful Wow Lady. Hugs and prayers from Santa Barbara. 💕🍷🌹😘🙏✝😇🤗

Watching Michelle "playing tug of war with logs" reminds me of something my mother used to say... that when I did what Michelle did, she said I was doing a lazy man's load... trying to do in one trip instead of two trips. Bad things often happen with a lazy an's load
    !

Your stock just skyrocketed knowing you play/played hockey hahaha. It is true there is a big difference between being in shape and hockey shape. Aside from cardio you use muscles you forgot you had. I always said there is nothing like a loose puck to push ya even if you have no gas left in the tank. I quit for 11 years, I stay in shape, run etc but man o man...core, thighs, shoulders, and butt came back to life in a hurry in the form of pain after jumping back into it for me. Couple of weeks of drop ins I joined beer league and everything comes back...even the scoring touch :) Safe sea travels for you, Steve and crew on bringing the boat home. Hurry back as I started watching your stuff because of the winter and mountain scenery and love to see more from this winter :)

I too was scammed to the tune of 5000.00. Thought I could detect a scam, but they are so, so evil in their methods. You are not alone!

Michelle, I'll have to admit you do have unique ways of moving logs around. Several of your techniques I've never seen or tried before! Please keep us updated on Lenny. Hope you have a good week. Thanks for Sharing!

I used to think the same way and had a major operation to my right shoulder, a slap repair. After the operation and its intense pain, I realized work smarter not harder and don't get lazy. It could cost you. Now that I'm older I have lots of machines to help me on my 4 acres.

You need to do the stationary bike when you get home from hockey (or any type of workout) to prevent lactic acid build up. I do it after hockey (10 minutes) works every time!
