Everdure Portable BBQ - A Quick Look

  • NOTE: There IS a reason I used a pan on this video and didn't cook directly over the charcoal. I do know that normally the main part of the meal would be done without a pan so no one needs to make any more comments about this... Anyone who ignores this WILL BE BLOCKED as I have had enough of the rude comments. This was just a quick look at the grill not a full review.
    This probably isn't going to be used much for camping but it does spend most of its time in the back of the 4x4 so we thought it was worth having a look at, even though the retail price is (we think) far too high.
    The biggest problem we have encountered with this BBQ was something we only thought about after we used it the first time.
    We can't see any simple way of putting the charcoal out once the meal has been cooked. Now this is fine if we are stopped overnight but if we want to use it on a day trip, that is going to be an issue.
    If there was a proper tight fitting metal cover that could starve the charcoal of oxygen, then it would have made using the BBQ a lot easier.
    We picked it up brand new for about one third of the retail price from am Op-Shop :)

      Haha, I feel the video poster's pain. What he did with the pan was actually quite ingenious, however it came across as missing the point of a charcoal bbq. Basically you have to let the charcoal burn for a bit to get it up to temperature and stop flaming. Instead of wasting that energy he used it to pre-cook his veges. Don't be so harsh on the guy.

    Using a frypan on top defeats the purpose of a "charcoal" grill as you won't get the smoky flavour. May as well cook food on your stove.

    Thanks for showing us all how it works. Nice little video. It's an interestingly compact design. Sorry you get equipment trolls commenting. One question though. Re day cook stops. If the coals are still hot and the handles work as advertised, and diffuse the heat, can't you just tip the coals out somewhere safe ... or pour water in and then tip them out?

  • @BenMitro
    @BenMitro 5 років тому +6

    Hmmm, like you indicated I would've just used a gas flame to cook in the pan. Charcoal is great if you want to flavour the food (usually meat), but otherwise a pain. It seems from the video the charcoal is far too close to the cooking rack? I noticed what appears to be an inner and outer skin on the base where the charcoal sits - is that the case?

    • @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen
      @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen  5 років тому +1

      Yes, mostly we will use it for cooking satay and stuff that will benefit from the smoky flavour. There is an inner tray where the charcoal sits (which is removable) and the orange part is an inner skin but non-removable. I probably put a bit too much charcoal in this time and will reduce it in future.

      @@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen Thanks for the info - I have an old 24L? compressor tank that I will slice and then hinge, open some ventilation holes and fabricate a removable charcoal holder and see if I can get a grate to fit inside. I will now also install a second skin on the "lid" - all this following your video which really made me think through the design! To me, your video was thus priceless...I'll let you know how it goes. Again, thanks.

    Ok - I have the large version of this. I’ve read your description so we won’t worry about addressing the whole pan issue. I probably wouldn’t eat off coals started with fire lighters anyway. Second, way too many coals for that cook if you’re using a frying pan. Lastly, carry a water spray bottle with you. It can be used to temper the heat.

      No, I gave up the idea of using it when out in the car and just use it at home these days. It still works well for cooking over charcoal and getting that nice flavour. The only really effective way to put it out and cool it down quickly enough for day trips would be to pour water over it and then wash it all out.

      The biggest question everyone has about this video LOL. At the time I just wanted to see how well it would cook using a pan on top as you can't cook everything on the open grill. Plus there was a big storm coming in and I was in a real hurry to get the video done and everything packed away before it hit, so cooking everything in the pan instead of meat on the grill and veggies in the pan later was the quickest way to get it done. I still can't work out why this video has been so popular. It was only just a quick test to see how this BBQ worked :)

    I think using the pan is a stroke of genius (thinking out of the box), I would never have thought of doing that. One could always finish the cook on the grill (after searing on the pan to start with) to impart that charcoal flavour at the end. Did the knives and forks come with the bag?

    I saw these today at Bunnings $197, way over priced, ( like everything in Australia ) this brand belong to the chef Charlton blumenathal , theres about $70 worth just for his name, this thing is worth $ 125 max, being generous, I like the idea, but not for $200 AU , hopefully I get one on sale, as for putting the coals out you can always dig a small hole and bury them.
