  • Are Golf Clubs and Golf Balls really getting that much better?
    Every year, golf club manufacturers keep telling us their new driver is 10 yards longer, their new Golf Balls fly 10 yards further, but the maths don't seem to add up?...
    In todays vlog we're going to find out the real differences between golf clubs and golf balls with nearly a 40 year age gap!
    Does a new TaylorMade Qi10 make that much difference compared to an older driver? Or is at all clever marketing by the guys at TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping etc?
    Will the new ProV1 really fly that much further than an older golf ball? Do we need the golf ball rollback that is scheduled to be introduced to make golf courses more challenging?
    Come and Join Master Club Fitter and Builder SAM SMITH and I at Horsley Lodge Golf Club for a 6 hole play vlog match!

    Two golf clubs dominated the United States in the 80's ... Wilson 1200GE and Ping Eye 2. Those would be good to compare to modern clubs. I think a good comparison would be the old Titleist ballata ball with the new Pro V1.

      About sixty yards different. Back in the seventies the pros would average about 270 from the tee. We now have players averaging 327. The clubs have changed too. The clubs need to add more obstacles or become obsolete. Narrow the fairways, plant more trees, add more water and bunkers, and stop building courses that are 7600yds. The game is all about accuracy anyway, so why not encourage more of it? The duffers won’t like the obstacles, but it sells more balls.

    Maxfli HT were the best balata balls back in the day, IMHO. You only miss hit ball once, because the ball was not fit to use after the miss hit. You learnt to improve strike, because mistakes were expensive.
    Shafts and golf balls have been the biggest improvement in the last 35 yrs, a combination of the two.

      I golfed in the late 80s and 90s and then gave it up for 20 years. Been playing about a year and a half now. Haven't put a cut in a single ball since I've been back. Can't say the same about the old days.

    Has the average handicap dropped with all the technology? According to the board at my club, no. The best way to get better is to practice from a 150 yards in, and chipping, pitching and putting. That's when your handicap tumbles

    Need a competition between two good players…one using 1970’s clubs including persimmon and no 60 degree wedge with a balata wound ball….the other using all modern equipment. The only difference would be tee placements…..a big golf course back in those days was around 6900 yards……and have the modern play from 7500…….would be a fun watch

  • @johnmoon4163
    @johnmoon4163 17 днів тому

    The game has changed making comparisons difficult. In 80's premium was on accuracy rather than distance. There were no specialist wedges or 60degree wedges and "woods" were much smaller. Courses were also different in that greens were generally slower and rough longer as course maintenance equipment has improved so much. Nowadays distance and height of flight is the goal.

    Take it from me Garry yes new balls and clubs hit hit the ball farther but simulators have been a huge part of the gains! When i played golf in the 80s the drivers produced so much spin that the ball went way to hi and just dropped out of the sky, now we fine tune spin and launch angle with shafts and different balls and get the maximum distance for each and every golfer.

  • @seansaca
    @seansaca 17 днів тому

    Awesome comparison. Since you used the Pro V1, you would have had to compare something like a Titleist Tour Balata or Maxfli DDH Balata to compare tour level balls. The Maxfli you all used is a budget model. Ideally, the current ball should have also been budget. I doubt the Balata balls could have held their compression this long. You'd quickly find out not to hit the balata balls thin or face the consequences of a smiley face and a lopsided ball.

  • @99CROUSE
    @99CROUSE 17 днів тому

    There were wound balls at that time that had Surlyn (ionomer) covers instead of balata. Does the old ball you were using have a balata or Surlyn cover? The Surlyn cover balls spun less, which might explain the spin being lower than a Pro V1.

    I had a set of similar clubs virtually identical.
    Nicklaus mk111 they weren't very well balanced computer designed clubs of today are much more consistant because the heads are guaranteed to be correctly cast with no uneven heavy or lighter weight areas in the manufacturing process.
    The ball technology has gone that way plus plastics are way more durable and balanced and even consistency of density also compressing much better delivering more energy into the ball.

      @@garymartingolf that was how sets came in those days most sets all the woods consecutive numbers. It’s funny how I bought them I was 12 or 13 and I was looking at the clubs in the clubhouse where I was playing. In those days you bought your clubs at the golf course. The pro approached me and asked if I was interested in new clubs and I told him I didn’t have enough money to purchase them and he asked if I had a job I told him that I had a paper route and he told me I could get them on credit. He had a notepad and put my name in it and told me come in every week and pay what you can. I took them home that day and used them all through high school. I think it was smart on his part he was building a connection with young golfers to play the course into adulthood.

    My old Mizuno MP57 5 iron goes the same distance as my Callaway Apex 7 iron, with a lower ball flight and is miles less forgiving. Just makes no sense to me amateurs using anything that's not super-forgiving. Lofts are irrelevant: if you get a set of irons, you'll obviously have all the loft options you need! I think the balls are a much bigger advance. I held on to a sleeve of Precepts from 2001 for about 15 years (I liked the aesthetic, and the 22 numbering). I used the Precepts in about 2017 and they're like hitting marbes compared to a Pro v1.

    There is a lot of debate on here re Players back in the day, equipment etc. average handicap in 1972 was 18, average handicap now??? 18 the courses the tour pros play are in the main longer, and that includes the open courses, albeit not as dramatically longer, modern golfers with new equipment still bully the golf courses. I would suggest that’s down to fitness as much as the equipment. Faldo started the bulking up, eventually cost him his game. Tiger took it to the Nth degree, going from skinny kid to super fit athlete, he left his peers behind, coupled with his ability, he was untouchable for a period of time. Jack Nicklaus, had Tome Watson, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Arnie, Seve, Peter Thompson. And Raymond Floyd to compete against, which is why Jack has so many runner up places to add to his 18 Majors. Today, most drive the ball 325+ hit 7 iron 200 yards. Jack said in the 70’s he hit 5 iron to the 16th at Augusta, he hit 9 iron when winning in 1986, says a lot about the equipment. Mind you, he looked fit in 1986, he was rather chubby in his youth. Ultimately, it’s just the game has changed, golfers are no longer driving to events, sleeping in the car, drunk from a night on the tiles playing the next day with a hangover, as my pal did in the early 80”s when winning the Dutch Open.😂😂

    The Mk III actually came out in 1985 so almost exactly 40 years old.
    They're a heel toe weighted club so not a true blade.
    You acknowledged that lofts are different but not lengths, the length will match the loft so your PXG 7 iron will be longer than your Ryder 7 iron. Longer club, faster clubhead, will increase ball speed and spin rate.

    I know you tried to dismiss the loft difference, but you can’t argue with facts. A modern nine iron is a true seven iron. The loft wars between the major companies are to blame. “our 9 iron goes further than any other company“ that’s because you’ve lofted it to be an 8 1/2 iron essentially. Once one company did it, the rest had to follow and keep up. Now we have a 1-1/2 to 2 club difference between modern irons and older ones.
