Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Konami's 1989 license-based beat 'em up arcade game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Played through as Leonardo on the game's default difficulty setting. At 28:05, once the ending finishes, I reset the machine and let the attract mode run to show all of the character profiles.
Coming out at the tail end of 1989, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game stands out as being one of the best looking and sounding video games of the 1980s, perhaps matched only by Capcom's Final Fight.
It also came out around the time the Turtle's popularity was really beginning to skyrocket. Their action figures were some of the most popular toys at the time (I had the sewer playset and the turtle van!), the TV show was watched by pretty much every elementary school-aged boy in America, the recent NES game ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ) was rocking the sales charts, and the announcement of the upcoming movie had everyone hyped. The turtles were a cultural phenomenon, and this giant 4-player arcade cabinet helped to fan that flame.
It had everything you could've asked for in a video game based on a license in 1989. The game starts with a partial recreation of the cartoon's intro that included a high quality recording of the theme song. You could play as any of the four turtles, and each had their own strengths and weaknesses. Several of the show's villains appear as bosses, complete with fully voiced taunts that sound like they were recorded by the original cartoon cast. The controls were easy to grasp, and even if the nuances went straight over your head, you could still have a great time by just bashing buttons alongside three of your friends.
And all of this was wrapped up in a "next-gen" level of technical wizardry that put most other arcade games of its time to shame. It was built on Konami's latest hardware platform (the same as Crime Fighters was based on: • Crime Fighters (Arcade... ), allowing the screen to be absolutely flooded with special effects and large, well-animated bad guys with no slowdown whatsoever, even in four-player mode. The style pulled its weight, too - nothing looked like second-rate fan art here, and the soundtrack was full of exciting, sample-heavy original music that incorporated threads of the show's theme song to keep it sounding familiar.
It's a great game, and I'm glad that it's going to be included in the Cowabunga Collection. It was ported to several platforms, but the original arcade game has only once seen a completely faithful console representation (the Xbox 360 version) over the past thirty-three years.
And if you like the music, be sure to check out my NES mixes of several of the tunes! You can find that here: • ♫TMNT: The Arcade Game...

This game was straight up magic. Still is.
Fun times playing this at Funspot!
These graphics still look amazing. Every time I play/see this game I can't help but think of what an amazing job Konami did on the NES version. Thanks for the video NC.
@@rjcupid
the nes version is even cooler because it has extra levels that the arcade doesn't have
the magic of ninja turtles in arcade and nes will live for many more generations
Is it because of the cowabunga collection coming soon
Seeing this game in the arcade for the first time as a kid was nothing short of absolute wonder.
I can vouch for that!
This game has an entire chip on the board dedicated to just the opening song. That's how much Konami cared about this game and it shows.
the arcade so much better then both home versions
Dude, hearing that play for the first time playing at my grocery store as a kid godsmacked me. I believe my mom just gave me money because she know I was going to ask to play it. (Had a cool mom who would also play arcade games).
Wish it stayed in The Cowabunga Collection! The best intro NOBODY has forgotten deserves more attention!
Wow no shizz
Do you have reference to that information?
Ohh man .. so many good memories in the arcade, as a kid , playing this for hrs .. or until I was super broke haha ! Classic !
You think it’s just as good on the console as it was in the arcade or the feeling would be different?
One of the most wanted game I truly wanted on a Nintendo system is *FINALLY* coming to the Switch as part of The Cowabunga Collection! Turtles fight with honor!
Imagine waiting for an 80s game to come out in 2022

For truth, justice, and a bigger slice of the pizza pie!
Never noticed before that attacking the girl on the skateboard in scene 2 gives you a point.
This is on the "short list" of the best arcade games of all time. As a kid, I vividly remember wanting to hang out with The Neutrinos in Dimension X. Such cool characters.
The Coolest cats in Dimension X and Mikeys crush on Kala.
Exactly. Kala still has one of the coolest hairstyles in any dimension. Also Mega Man, say hi to Dr. Light for me.
@@rjcupid Will do. The best man of Robotics!
Totally!!! 🙌🏼
@@jimboswamps5602 Totally Tubular Dude!
I loved in these games when the little cutscene transitions have the turtles that you used. Almost reminds me of those sticker books they used to sell where you’d move around the little adhesive pictures to make your own scene.
This game is the reason why I became obsessed with the arcade.
This game is (and always will be) one of the best Beat Em' Ups ever made. It's also one of the best Turtles games ever made.
I'm so unbelievably hyped for the upcoming collection. Games like this deserve so much better than to be unreleaseable on modern systems due to licensing.
Collection and the remake of this game with April and Splinter as playable characters. I guess the characters you don't pick fill in the hostage role?
That reminds me of a surprisingly great fangame called TMNT: Rescue-Palooza where you can play as all sorts of characters from the cartoon, even the game's bosses.
It’s being done for preservation purposes.
@@AgentofLADON Shredder's Revenge is an entirely new game, not a remake....
*leaps into Technodrome*
"WE GOTTA FIND THE TECHNODROME!!"
Classic and one of the great Konami beat'em ups ever made.
Doesn't get much better than this here. Oh those sweet sound effects haha
Man I miss the old arcades. This cranked up in one of those is one of those forever memories.
For my money, all things considered, this is THE GOAT arcade game...just ahead of NBA Jam, Pac-Man, and Street Fighter II. Those are the core four games that both drew massive interest AND helped change a style of gaming in their genre. All of the subsequent co-op beat 'em ups were derivatives of this game (X-Men, The Simpsons, etc). And who hasn't said, "SAY YA PRAYERS, TOITLES!" at least a couple dozen times lmao.
i played this game every holiday in a little arcade hall in bibione/italy in the 90`s. so many other guys played it along my site and we dont know each other. it was a great time :)
One of the first 4 player co-op brawler titles ever created. Right on the massive popularity of the franchise, the classic 89 arcade was definitely a genre defining entry. I imagine you could encounter a cabinet of the game in any pizza parlor or theaters. "Yippee-I-Ay!"
Will never get those quarters back, but the memories are worth so much more.
That was hilarious the way you made Rocksteady and Bebop collide into each other!!! 😂
Just like in the cartoon.
Can't wait for the collection! Playing this final stage with three other people is an epic experience.
Pause at 11:18 seeing that foot flip you the bird is classic
Arguably one of the most fun & unique team of comic book superheroes!!
Wow I had no idea how rocking the OST is! Like you know as they are often in loud as bunk arcades. The third stage sounds so effing chill I swear.
Here in the UK the show was censored to "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles", so this arcade game was the first time I got to hear the original unedited song. Played it quite a bit as a kid!
I've said it a gazillion times already, bless Konami and their talent for making these masterfully crafted licensed beat-em-ups. These games have stood the test of time.
What a soundtrack!
I blame this for my pre-teen bankruptcies. My weekly allowances couldn't stand a chance with this at my local arcade.
Spent a ton of quarters on this one! Thanks for sharing.
A man on a quest to play every iteration of every classic TMNT game.
I like how the game still has Konami's muted/greyish color scheme that many Konami games had in the late 80s, yet simultaneously has really colorful graphics that represent the license. Their art team is top notch
Can't wait for that TMNT Konami collection.
When Konami brought this to the NES, the bosses of the 2 new stages (Tora, the alien bounty hunter from the icy planet Traglodoon and the robotic Shogun, also an alien bounty hunter) were designed by Kevin Eastman specifically for that game. They haven't appeared in any other TMNT media since to my knowledge.
The NES version sucked though
I love the original. This is my childhood. I can't wait the Cowabunga Collection and Shredder's Revenge. Turtle Power!
Love this game,bruh.90s best
For some reason I LOVED hitting those fire hydrants on level 2
Ahhh..... The FBI thing they said before playing.... The memoriess...
That FBI anti-drug slogan should've been mandatory for every game.
Crazy seeing how different elements from games got put into other games.
Like the Technodrome doesn't show up in the TMNT 4 on the arcade, but does on the home console (SNES).
Use to go to the ground round restaurant and play this there. I was amazed of the graphics in 89
What city was that in? In the late 80's/early 90's here in Montreal we had these two awesome restaurants with free arcade games in them: Crickets and Sammy's. Parents would eat and talk while all the kids went crazy playing all the amazing arcade games in a separate area. It was incredible.
@@rjcupid It was in New York City.. Love Montreal
I remember it when it rolled off the distributors truck and was a line to play it the moment it was installed NC. What a time it was to play it back in the late 80's bro. 8^)
Anthony...
*really got weird didnt it? brain from another dimension. does that mean kang is in the mcu - i mean this is the daredevil universe hey?* -JC
I can’t wait to get this when the collection comes out.
Gotta love foot soldiers armed with brooms 🤣🤣🤣
Brings back sssooo many groovy memories 😎
The fun of putting a lot of quarters in this game. 😀
This game is a classic, but I've never been able to figure out why the turtles look so unhappy about getting a smooch from April after rescuing her.
Just in time for the cowabunga collection
I’ve heard there’s going to be a new tmnt beat em up called shredder’s revenge hopefully it and the upcoming collection gains traction
Ninja Turtles Arcade, X-men Arcade, Simpsons Arcade were my absolute favorites. Terminator 2 Judgment Day with that rattling gun was awesome just to play the first level though.
I remember this game really setting the bar for brawlers
Perfect timing, as I just finished a 1 credit clear of this last night as Donatello
I love playing this game everyday
The upcoming TMNT collection 13 games will pretty much have every game made pre 1999 in 1 large collection of games.
However to this day I never did beat the original NES game its easily the hardest one but those upcoming 13 collection of games will include the Game boy games as well.
20:22 Those *orange triangles* on the ground tell you when the freezer tubes are coming up! Never noticed that before. 🙃
With the upcoming Cowabunga Collection, lets hope they keep this game, and Turtles in Time's music unaltered, unlike the last time both were re-released and hidden in TMNT games.
I spent many tokens at Chuck E. Cheese playing this game back when I was a kid.
I hope the Arcade version of TMNT be on the Cowabunga collection?
One of my favorite video games of all time. 🤘
The music with this cabinet was off the hook. Sounded wicked good.
I still think the Technodrome theme in this game is the best Technodrome music in the entire TMNT game series. :)
I used to love to go to the arcade. I'd always be able to find at least one other person to beat this game, Simpsons, X-men, or Bad Dudes with. Those were some good times...
I can totally relate, I miss arcade camaraderie. The Golden Axe games were great for that too.
In the arcade version of Bad Dudes you can rescue the then for real President (Reagan)!
@@JohnSmith-zw8vp I love how you grab a burger with him... 80s overload!
@@deprogramr I would think he'd offer jelly beans though...
Spent to many quarters on this instead of roller skating like I said I would as a kid. 😂
This and The Simpsons game took most of my tokens when I went to Chuckie Cheese as a kid
I Had this Game on the Gamecube One Time,TMNT 2 Battle Nexus,They had this In The Game,Good Memories
Sucks that I sold It
I put so many quarters into this game; it was probably cheaper buying the NES game version of this than how much i spent playing it at arcades.
The graphics on this game were truly amazing at the time and i wish there had been a way to bring these to home consoles and have them look just like the arcades.
This is probably one of the best arcade beat em' up's ever.
Although I did prefer the NES port for the better music, and added features which were cut in the arcade.
19:30 What do you Turtles mean "We gotta find it"? You already found it!
So many memories
This and TMNT 4 arcade is just PURE GOLD 🪙 priceless
The only mistake Konami ever made to this game was porting it to the NES instead of the SNES.
Double Dragon, same problem.
@@KenMasters. SNES wasn't out for Double Dragon until at least 3 more years.
@@solarflare9078
The best solution devs can only do before the SNES is postpone their games on hold.
The NES was never made for arcade games and beat 'em ups, due to scaled down graphics and sounds as well as hardware limitations such as allowing only two enemy characters at a time to fight the player character.
i got a story related to tmnt arcade
back when i was 4 my mom and i went shopping at a local k mart i saw they had this cabinet in the entrance way
after following mom around i got bored and i snuck off to look at this game and i just stood there watching the attract mode for an unknown period of time
after a while one of the store employees found me and mom was not happy after what i did
i was literally a single click away from buying the arcade1up cabinet when they announced the collection that is the better deal
this game is reason #1 why im getting it day one
Loved this game in the arcade. 35 years ago or whatever it was. The first few bosses you did I was like wtf where is thier health? The rock guy from Dimension X I was like oh... he took all the other bosses health and put it into his health pool.
This game was my childhood!! So many memories.
Awesome playthrough.
Thanks! :)
2022 is shaping up to be a good year for TMNT fans. Not only Shredder's Revenge is coming soon, so is the Cowabunga Collection.
that intro sound was dope
Magnificent video.
Always loved how foot soldiers exploded after you hit them
Amazing
thank you 🎩👍
I like how konami reused animations from this and put them in the simpsons beat em up. (Enemy walk cycles, rocksteady falling over = wrestler boss, etc.)
3:52 😆
"Winners don't use drugs" 👍
I can’t wait for the collection to come out and they better not get rid of the rewind function like they did with contra and castlevaina and this game has good memories for me and turtles in time it’s sad arcades are starting to go more VR meaning some of us will have to wait until they get more headsets that can go over glasses.
Tmnt arcade game still kick ass today. 😀👍🐢🎮
Back when everything Konami touches,
turns to gaming blockbusters.
Excelente juegasoo las tortugas ninja en el tiempo de Arcade
Why is the Foot Clan just hanging out in a giant building they set on fire?
I guess it's them trying to hold April captive as they take out anyone that tries to rescue her.
I can't wait teenage mutant Ninja turtles cowabunga collection to come out
This game took all my money as a kid
Classic game
I love the totally original character actors
I remember playing this game in the arcade and I was always confused as to how and why Rocksteady and Bebop were the bosses at the end of the level at 9:08 since they were defeated on the first two levels. Either they had themselves cloned, or have twins, or the person who made the arcade game accidentally had them again back to life. On the other hand on the NES game, the level had Baxter Stockman as the fly instead of Rocksteady and Bebop which was confusing since Baxter Stockman was defeated on the third level in the sewer.
I love this game!
3:51 Just had to hit her, huh?
Of course! She's .5% of an extra life in points. How could I not?
@@NintendoComplete At the time I posted this, I didn't realize she actually gave you a point.
Now I do and I think that's hilarious.
But there's no extra lives in the arcade version though :p
@@solarflare9078 Ah, right. I guess NES habits die hard.
Did they actually get the voice cast for this game (i.e. Peter Renaday, Renee Jacobs, Townsend Coleman, Robbie Rist, and James Avery)?
I was wondering the same. It sounds like it.
@@NintendoComplete The answer is unfortunately no. No-name voice actors with digitized voices.
@@MattoMakesLetsPlays No kidding? They had me fooled.
@@NintendoComplete what is name of the villain boss at scene 4?
Wow! The various weapon wielding foot soldiers are so impressive, how I wished their toy action figures were on sale, that I wouldn't mind buying and collecting them at even my current age of 37!
@@NintendoComplete Some I will say do sound similar, like Bebop and Krang, but I am fairly certain those are not the TMNT 80s cartoon voices we're hearing. It could also be on-staff developers or localizers.
