I have always been fascinated whenever I hear a train horn as it brings back a lot of good memories. The raw power that they pour out is just amazing to hear. And it's nice that along with the fascination of train sounds, I am now excited to share with you a collection of videos that I've put together featuring the same.

Train Horn Sound Effects:
As Diesel locomotives began to replace steam on most railroads during the mid-20th century, it was realized that the new locomotives were unable to efficiently utilize the steam whistles then in use. Early internal combustion locomotives were initially fitted with small truck horns or exhaust-powered whistles, but these were found to be unsuitable and so the air horn design was scaled up and modified for railroad use.
A Train horn is an air horn which serves as an audible warning device on Diesel and Electric locomotives. Its primary purpose is to alert persons and animals to the presence of a train so they can clear the tracks, especially when approaching a grade/level crossing. They are also used for acknowledging signals given by Indian Railways employees (i.e. during switching operations).
Train horn is operated mainly by compressed air. Air tanks are used to store and generate compressed air for the train horn to operate. When the train engineer presses the train horn button, a strong burst of compressed air from the air tanks will flow through the narrow opening of the horn. This pressure makes the diaphragm of the train horn vibrate or oscillate towards the external opening of the horn or the nozzle and it creates the loud sound effect that we hear when the train is approaching. The sloping structure of the train horn helps in making the oscillated sound even louder to hear. The sound produced by the train horn can actually reach up to 150 decibels.

I live next to Hyderabads Nampally railway station, and evry evening, Bombay express leaves at 8:40, and the horn is so long and loud, it's like Krishna is blowing his shankh

Thank you , The sound of the trains remind me of my many trips to beautiful India . Listening to the trains in the distance at night when staying at my friends house and of course travelling on them. My father was a train driver and worked as fireman on the steam trains and then as driver until he retired 20 years ago and I spent a lot of my early working life travelling around England by train. I think it is the most satisfying form of transport.
