They use ancient languages, and interpretations of runes. They also use ancient instruments (combined with modern instruments), most of which they make themselves. They also use bones, animal skin drums, etc.
The vocal thing is throat singing. If you like throat singing, you should check out "The HU", a Mongolian band that uses traditional instruments and throat singing to create modern songs.
Heilung is worthy of a deep dive. Read up a bit on their approach, and listen to them. Then, just sit back and FEEL them. Don't be scared; unless you're trying to go to war against them. :)

If you like the Hu, check out Tengger Calvary. They're Mongolian and use Mongolian instruments and throat singing and melodies, combined with metal music. I liked them much more than the Hu, but the lead singer killed himself a few years back. They were a fantastic band.
As a Norse Pagan myself, listening to Heilung is soul music to me! I can literally meditate listening to them. ⚔️ Skål!
They are my go to for meditation and mindfulness as well. It stires something in your soul.

I mean ... They were also wildly violent and abusive at times. Tribal infighting, wanton sexual assault, and slavery were norms for that culture in that time. Being "tamed" by the church wasn't a bad thing. But I do think perhaps the church if the time may have gone too far in destroying some of the positive elements of the cultures beauty and art styles.
Either way, it's easy to look at the beauty of ancient civilizations and forget what caused their downfalls. The Aztecs come to mind. Stunning beauty marked by profound violence and a fear based culture.

Bit of a hardcore introduction for Heilung. lol. This is one of their more aggressive songs, at least in sound. The song is not aggressive in context though, I assure you... rather religious and spiritual, actually. (see my copy and pastes below for more info.) Please check out more. Heilung is a human and spiritual experience in the form of music. And very meditative if you let yourself fall into it. A wonderful mix of folk, metal, and tribal music! I recommend the LIFA concert, you can find it on full on their yt channel. But if you don't want to commit to a concert, I highly recommend:

Anoana, In Maidjan or Krigsgaldr is definitely a better start if you’ve never heard them before, but I love Alfadrhaitir as well - it’s definitely a vibe!

Lifa is the name of the album this song is from. Lifa tells the story of a village forced to defend itself and go to war because invaders have come. In the beginning of the song, they mimic the wolves Geri and Freki, and the crows Hugin and Munin who are Odin's companions.

@@r9nx714I saw them in Worcester Massachusetts a few weeks ago. No footage from that show, but I saw at the red rocks they had a native tribe come out with them, they did the same thing in Worcester with the local Nipmuc tribe. Such an awesome experience

I personally love this, but it's not the most accessible of their tracks. Try Krigsgaldr or In Maidjan, you'll love Maria's vocals.

Could you imagine sitting in your little town or village and in the forest is this loud war drumming and chanting from a small army? No wonder people thought Vikings where supernatural fighters.
I've been to two of their shows. They start off the show saying "Remember we are all part of the one great being, who is always there, and always has been". This song is usually played toward the end of the set because it has that trance like state of warriors going into battle.
I recommend Anoana as well! The video is beautiful and it tells a story. They are based out of Norway, by the way.

You are so right! It's very interesting and its art. But as @marthamarkusen said, this is not the most accessible music video by Heilung. This one feels a bit like a long Hakka as used by the New-Zealand rugby team. You should try the official "Anoana" video, its beautiful. Thanks for the reaction though. I loved the look of complete bewilderment on your face :)

Do you want a reason? Or just disagreeing with me? One reason is knowing somewhat the taste of the reactor from listening to his other reaction videos. Another reason is observing his reaction. Another (but less important) is that it is less melodic so less familiar to many ears, sometimes easing into things can take you far. Note the comment of the person who said they didn't like it, saying it was very strange. @@RavenL1337
This is a rather intense introduction to Heilung. There's a flow to the whole ritual/concert, and this is a high point. All the names of the All-Father (Odin), and his attributes. It's very much a warrior's chant, but in context it's like the transubstantiation of the Eucharist in a mass. It's a mystic moment.
The instrument Maria is using is called the ravanahatha
they make you feel the way they do because their music and performance are pagan healing rituals.
That deep voice you heard was throatsinging and that is not for anybody, it takes some serious training to master.
Being a Norse pagan and watching you come into this with no idea what to expect was awesome. I love Heilung and sometimes forget how insane they sound to people who aren't used to them. I had a similar reaction my first time.

Us Heilung fans can't wait for reaction videos. It brings us back to when we first saw LIFA...here's how it goes or at least went for me...1.umm wtf is this? 2.that can't be his voice can it? 3. these people are NOT acting! and 4. we need to watch that again.

The throat singer is an actual trained Shaman his name is Kai and he was apparently brought up in the tradition. This is not the best track as a first listen to Heilung though. The music/language is proto germanic with elements of Scandinavian folklore, all lyrics taken from rune stones standing stones and cave/parchment writings. Heilung called it musical history :)
Kai rebelled against his strict Christian upbringing. Chris was raised Pagan. Maria grew up near a museum where a Viking long boat was found. All are involved in local pagan events & re-enactments.

ive been to 3 rituals. they sing in unspoken languages. Old Germanic, Icelandic, Proto Germanic, Norse...etc. Viking-Bronze age. You'll leave the ritual feeling overwhelmed. Very intense. Beautiful.
I absolutely love this. I love near York in England and we see these cloths all the time. I was born a Yorkshire person and to have the sound of what it could have sounded like before they go to war. This ate a was know as Danelaw and was run by Norse people. It was fascinating to hear it xxxxx
its norse wiking culture, on a stage making music. You dont really have to feel anything about it, the norse culture is not rasist, we were farmers, untill we invented the long boats and found out that doing crime in other contreies, where evryone was smaller than us and couldent fight, was pretty fun.

Good reaction, and I can understand that particular song feeling scary as your introduction to Heilung. You might want to go find the whole Lifa concert video and watch it from the beginning. By the time they get to that song, the viewer is initiated and can feel confident that they are friendly and the fierceness is part of the act or show.

The throat singing is something you would also hear in the religious music of Native Americans, Tibetan Buddhist Monks, and Gregorian Chanting.

Enjoyed your reaction. Funny that often people take this song as some kind of call to war when it is essentially a recital of the different names for the Norse god Odin. What's really amazing is that this was their first real public performance (2017 in Belgium). I've seen these guys live twice and, especially outdoors, their music is enveloping. Performed as a kind of ritual, you don't need to know what is being said (it's largely sung in dead languages anyway). Listen to the drums and the voices and just let yourself be carried away. You very quickly picked up on that.
The first time I saw them, it was at Red Rocks. And it was AMAZING!
It was the Netherlands actually, but yeah, their first performance and best. Gods were definitely with them that time.

11:01 - It's powerful, but it doesn't need to be scary. I'm not denying your experience, only trying to invite you in to check it out. I find the scary/power mix on par with a performance of the Haka, or Native American drum circles and dancing.

From what I understand, the lyrics are basically listing off all the various alternative names that Odin has in Norse and probably Anglo-Saxon mythology. In the old germanic languages, you couldn't really make things rhyme as changing the ending would alter the meaning of the words, so alliteration (the first sound of the word was more commonly used.) To give poets and singers more variety in their works, alternative ways to describe things called Kennings were used. The example I always remember is another way to describe the Sea was to call it the Whale-Road. Odin had a LOT of other names, some of them warnings about what he'd do if you pissed him off, others praise for his wisdom and power, but all were used in the various sagas and songs in the old days.
These are our European forefathers... Amazing to be at a their concerts...

If I'm not mistaken, they are singing in proto-germanic. A long extinct lost language. Some of what the lyrics are from archeological stone rhunes (engravings) from the Late Neolithic period of North Europe.
It's called throat singing. Found in Tibet, Mongolia, Norse, and other groups.

they're "vikings". they make european nordic folk music with organic primitive instruments. this was an invocation to Odin the Norse god of war (and other things) to prepare the warriors for battle. and I think it's quite effective lol. by the way the language was old norse not a modern language.

9:24 - No doubt. Yeah, each performance is more a "ritual" than a "concert." I've been lucky enough to go to one, and the energy and vibe is intense. I know enough to know what is being said and recognize the symbolism in the ritual. It's very modern and syncretic, taking elements from our heritages and blending it together, but there's an authenticity to it.

Some people criticize Heilung for not being "accurate" to our historical traditions (Nordic and Germanic traditions, even some Celtic elements) when it's a syncretic mix of many guided by a modern vision.
