- In episode one of this Alaska spring bear hunting series, Marcus Hockett and Michael Parente head north via plane to be dropped off in remote Southeast Alaska. They forfeited a boat and chose to bring lightweight Alpackarafts to paddle around the inlets that they hope bears are frequenting.

Well it doesn’t take long to start locating bears, but in Alaska they can’t legally hunt the same day that they fly. Fine with them, there is plenty of sightseeing to do and getting camp set up for a week of chasing bears.
The following day they get up and take the Alpackarafts out on the ocean to slowly explore the area and enjoy the scenery in search of a bear. They are able to locate multiple bears the first afternoon. But locating a bear and getting within shooting distance are two different things. Dealing with winds and tides, they have to be patient and wait for the right opportunity.

Marcus's excitement is contagious. These two should do much more of this. They have great attitudes and the non-super polished storytelling is great.
Awesome work, fellas. The small fish you spotted were most likely juvenile coho salmon (parr). Coho rear in backwaters & side-channels. They have the white markings you describe, and display them when defending individual territory. I lived in SE AK in the 80s. Hunted Kuiu for spring bear in 1985. Thanks for the memories 😊
Just picked up my daughter's 2020 Oregon spring bear from the taxidermist and put it on the wall this afternoon. Now I'm sitting in my easy chair watching more spring bear hunting. Good job, Marcus and Michael! Enjoyed the episode.

When I saw the alpaca rafts for the first time this hunt was the first thing I thought of. I was going to order a raft last week but they are three months out on delivery. 😩

Ya’all flew in on a float plane but there was what appeared to be a well travelled road in the video, when you say the deer. These things don’t seem to go together, road on a fly-in trip. What’s the story?

It looks to me like they are hunting an island without a community on it. Older logging roads used by folks who boat in atv's and maybe a few lodge owned rigs. SE Alaska has logging roads everywhere. Many you must take a boat or plane to get to. They barge in the logging equipment when they log the islands.

What happened to randy he is never on the hunts anymore
1) these guys had to apply for this hunt 18 months ago. Randy didn't get it or didn't apply 2) Randy's season was cut short by illness so his hunting/filming days from last fall were down. We all like him and miss him but he's not the only hunter worth watching and he really trusts these guys, we should appreciate them for what they are. 3) I think this is Randy's favorite complaint to get every single time he puts out content that he's not in, you should keep up the bitching he loves it I think.
