    In this video I restored a friction ratchet made in 1933 by 'Gedore'.
    D.R.P. was the german patent until 1945.
    The number 583635 indicates that it was made in 1933.
    As you can see in the video this is not a regular ratchet. It is a friction ratchet, which can be used for the same jobs like gear wrenches or pass through ratchets. You can also use it with regular sockets as shown in the video. Also because it has no tooth there is no danger to snap them under high torque, so it can stand much higher loads than a regular ratchet could. That is the main advantage over regular ratchets.
    There are different inserts with different sizes which are still available for purchase.
    The work on the project took about 25 hours (inclusive filming) plus about 10 hours of editing.
    I hope you will have some fun watching the video! If you have any further questions on the process, tools, material, cold bluing or else write a comment, I will try my best to answer your questions.
    I hope you liked the video! Thank you for watching and feel free to leave a comment and subscribe if you liked :)
    Disclaimer:
    The experiments are only for educational purposes and serve as entertainment.
    I am experienced in handling the used substances and I advise everyone who is not a trained professional not to imitate the experiments I show you.
    For experiments which could cause potential danger I will not tell you which chemicals I am using to prevent imitating. Those who know what is happening, know the chemicals anyway and probably are trained professionals. :)
    I am not responsible for personal injury or property damage if any actions shown in the video will be imitated.
    I hope you understand.
    Until next time :)

    I like when they file the rough casting marks, being mass produced they don’t have time to make them look the good. It’s almost like they way they should be from the factory! Awesome work!!

    Dam good job, man; as well as in your work with the 100 year ratchet there is something I love in your restorations.
    Getting the tools with brushed or scotch brite rubbing finish let them look somehow more robust and solid than the ones with mirror finish; there is something in the glow -when it comes to steel- that make it look somehow cheaper or less solid; I know there are lots of people that like that extra shinny finish and every opinion or like is to respect.
    However I love that old solid and reliable look in tools.
    Warm regards from Mexico.

      It's a friction spanner. We use them everyday at work. The insert isn't usually a square hole, it's normally a 6 or 12 point 'socket' that goes straight onto the nut or bolt. We use them from 20mm all the way upto 80mm

    Das Werkzeug ist durch das schleifen und polieren so glatt geworden, das es bei geringen Mengen Schweiß in der Hand zu rutschen beginnt. Keine so gute Idee gewesen.

      @DrHutOfHandcraft  Рік тому

      Danke für deinen Kommentar, aber das kann ich nicht bestätigen. Ich habe das gute Stück ja auch geölt und wenn man richtig greift dann rutscht es auch nicht. Habe die Erfahrung auch schon bei den anderen Ratschen gemacht die ich restauriert habe

    Fine work Doc as usual. I've always wondered, does cold blueing wear off?

    • @DrHutOfHandcraft
      @DrHutOfHandcraft  Рік тому +1

      Thank you!
      I think that depends on the part. But if you just cold blue a part which isn’t exposed to friction it doesn’t wear off, at least in my experience. The cold bluing of the inner parts will probably wear off with time at the spots were it is exposed to friction

    Looks nice, but you are really not "restoring". Restoring is returning as close as possible to the original condition. Removing casting marks, chamfering holes, and bluing parts is not restoring, it is improving.
