I'm SHOCKED Lani gets so close to having an aneurysm from pauses.... Then I remember the fact that king Kai exclaiming loudly to get tien or yamcha to ask what happened on namek is all an extended skit about how Scott is in real life and it makes more sense....
We've also watched them 69 times and can quote them in our sleep.

When Shenron asked if Krillin was wanting to wish for the restoration of the desolated forest, I couldn't help but feel that the way you had the tone done was Shenron being genuinely touched by it. Like, Shenron thought that that was a decent wish to make. But then Krillin ruined it by wanting a Christmas Tree, and made Shenron snap.

So, I hope you two get a laugh from this. For my friends I ran a Christmas D&D one shot. It was just Christmas Tree of Might. None of my friends have ever watched DBZA. I reskinned some D&D monsters to use as the villains, but I kept all the names (except Turles, named him Straggele, which is a European christmas monster that eats kids unless the parents would bribe them with fruit, so that worked). I also kept their motivations the same, and the reasons they are on the naughty list. I also named the innkeeper "Kouri Lilbo" to give a nod to Little Kuriboh.
Slay and Jinga showed up at the inn to keep everyone inside and were the first fight. I changed the firetruck to a horse carriage, and cancer to a curse, just to have it fit the setting a bit more.
Beru and S.N.O.W.Man were outside lighting the forest on fire and were the second fight. I kept Jinga and Beru as ex-elves who made S.N.O.W.Man. It was pretty funny having a few of the PCs not believe in Santa, but everything about Jinga and Beru fit them being Christmas elves.
Karyl was with Straggele (Turles) at the Christmas Tree Of Might. I even kept the "But most of all, I hate Santa Claus" speech, and his origin be because where he lived kept shooting at Santa Claus (with balistas) to keep him away. One major difference is when they found out what Karyl did to, instead of giving a "Dibs on not fighting that guy." reaction, they locked down Straggele/ Turles, and just bullied circled Karyl.
Overall they absolutely loved it! It was super well. I can't wait until next year when they have to stop the Plan To Eradicate Christmas.

Hearing Lani talk about his first DBZ experience made me realize how lucky I was. I turned on the TV one Saturday morning, I saw Goku and Piccolo teaming up against Raditz in DBZ Kai, was hooked immediately, and kept watching every weekend all the way up to Cell Games.
I loved Kai,my first exposure to dbz and anime as a whole on Nickelodeon.
I grew up with the original Funimation dub but i still prefer the Kai version. My first exposure to English Dragon Ball Z was also during the Raditz fight I thought it was cool even though I couldn't really understand what was going on of what they were saying
Honestly I started at the same point as Lani with the garlic junior stuff. That said it is one of my favorite parts of the show because it’s one of my earliest memories and it was me and my brother and my dad watching it together so it made it super special, it was that and the worlds strongest vhs tape I watched religiously as a kid. Me and my brother still will watch dbz with my dad when we all get together every few months and it’s just become an amazing tradition as it was the only show my father really enjoyed that me and my brother watched.

I’m actually surprised Kyle was allowed to lend his acting credit to this. Especially since he’s a A regular DBZ VA ala Funimation. Hope he never endured legal or professional backlash as a result. Even professionals actors should be allowed to just have fun

DBZ: Tree of Might was released in 1990 in Japan and DBZ became part of Toonami (Cartoon Network) in 1998 and that was Funimation pushing anime into the mainstream. What I find ironic is that Japan regularly publishes doujins of anime material and the US allows parodies under fair use which is part of free speech. Japan's manga industry usually finds talent in the doujin market, and influencers on youtube are hired by the entertainment industry.

Lani comments that there’s a lot of pausing in this episode, but Kaiser’s pauses with backstory are literally the reason I watch these. I wanna know about the behind-the-scenes stuff and the editing tricks being used. Keep it coming!

Tomar didn't voice Carmine in Dragon Ball Super Hero. Carmine's voiced by Jason Marnocha, aka Abridged Dr. Wheelo, Nanba from Megalobox, Katana Man from Chainsaw Man, etc. Tomar is actually abridged Dr. Kochin. He never voiced in official dragon ball media.

2:27 It didn’t help that you have two characters who to a new person would look like Goku in addition to Goku himself being there, and then you don’t see Turles in anything Dragon Ball outside of video game related things.
7:50 It was only really this movie where he’s inexplicably evil. Garlic Jr., he was just granting a wish with no strings attached. World’s Strongest, he was actually trying to suggest better alternatives to Kochin but got fed up with Kochin’s inanities. Lord Slug, again, just granting a wish though maybe he also didn’t want to get blown up by a King Piccolo-esque.

I feel for Lani and how he got introduced to DBZ, because my experience was probably just as bad. My introduction to DBZ was with Dragon Ball Z Budakai 2. The one where you play the story with what's essentially a digital board game, great game, but AWFUL way to learn about the series. After that, I randomly saw the episode of DBZ where Gohan turns Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Games with no context at a friend's house. Then after that, I played Dragon Ball Z Sagas with another friend that knew even less about DBZ than I did.
Edit: Side note, I always misremember the final joke of this movie. I always think that the joke about Shenron getting a restraining order is gonna be followed by the "due to it being non-canon, he was not allowed to keep it" joke.
you think that's bad?, I started dragon ball z by playing super botouden at the arcades, yeah, the SNES version, I knew who goku and piccolo were, but then I had no idea who the rest were, confused dr gero with master roshi, had no idea who Frieza or cell were either... then started watching DBZ proper and then I was like "Oh, so that's who those guys were, also imperfect cell in superbotouden sucks..." the guy was so slow, you could dance circles around him with Piccolo or anyone else to be honest.
I got into it ok, but I went through it in the wrong order instead funnily enough. I got ahold of the second part of the Buu saga on DVD before I was even done with Freeza, and I watched all of GT before I was done with Cell
I was introduced to the DBZ by games too, but in my case it was the legacy of the Goku series lmao
I had some of the Orange Box collection with some Freeza Saga (and maybe Saiyan Saga) episodes, The Bardock Special, The Future Trunks Special, a DVD containing a single episode where Bulma body swaps with Ginyu, and a DVD with some GT episodes. (You can imagine how confused the GT episodes made me.) Also had all three Broly movies on DVD. (At some point I watched Lord Slug, don’t know where from though.) I think I got most of my knowledge of DBZ through the games. (I specifically remember being introduced to Cooler by them.)
I was introduced to dragon ball through the manga. A friend and I pretty regularly had sleep overs, I'm a morning person, while he wasn't. Since I didn't want to wake anyone up I looked around his room for something to do that wouldn't make much noise, when I saw his dragon ball collection. I pulled out the first issue and right away was pretty confused that I had to read it backwards. But I was hooked right away, so whenever I slept at his place, I continued where I had left off.
"We kinda turned shenron into the villain for the movies." So... GT abridged when? Jk, but the parallels be there.

The DBZA movies have become my Christmas Movie Marathon tradition, mainly because two of them (technically 3 if you count Lord Slug) are Christmas centric.

My first episode was when Gohan was fighting Vegeta while Goku was on the ground. I thought it was some kind of open fighting tournament. When Gohan fired his Masenko's and Vegeta did his barrage, my mind was entirely blown. I had never seen beams mixed with martial arts, nor a cartoon that was as physically brutal. I was hooked, and wanted to watch it as often as possible.
My first episode was when Yamcha was trying to train at 400 times earth's gravity after Vegeta finished using the training chamber. I had no idea who anyone was. When Vegeta mentioned being stronger than Kakarot, I thought he was referring to Yamcha at first. Didn't know he meant Goku.
For the movies, i go back to Super Android 13 often.. i cant wait for your insight on it!

TFS did such a great job at enhancing DBZA & Hellsing Ultimate Abridged with fantastic songs, it always added something and meant that we'd soon get a video of the entire song and some badass drawings.

My introduction to DBZ was over the Christmas period many years ago. Cartoon Network/Toonami was airing DBZ from 1pm-5pm every day. It only showed from episodes 1 to the end of Frieza. I caught it near the beginning of the Namek saga. The Rock the Dragon intro was so hype, thats the reason why I watched really. Then got to love the characters. First favourites were Gohan/Krillin, then Piccolo and Vegeta. I never really grew to love Goku the way others did. The first time I really loved Goku was when Dragon Ball finally aired in the UK.
Wow. The moment he mentioned “neighborhood cluck” so many memories came back to me. I totally forgot about that.
Bro, my first experience with Dragon Ball was the beam struggle between Goku and Vegeta. I had no context for what was going on - all I knew was that two guys fired beams of energy out of their hands and THEY COLLIDED IN MID AIR. I had never seen anything like it before - I was in awe - and so began my obsession with anime 😅😂
I still have to give it to you guys for a. Making me thing this movie really was winter based (not holiday necessarily) and B. Entirely removing Icarus without feeling like anything was missing
Killing in the napoff is one of my favorites of your guys DBZ songs even though it wasn't exactly a Christmas song

I watch this special every year and I look forward to sharing it with my daughter, when she’s old enough. I watched it when it came out in high school with friends and shared it with a lot of friends in college, too. It’s one of your best works!

What's funny is that Tree of Might was the first DBZ film that was aired in the English version when the Ocean Dub were doing the voices. I figured that was the reason TFS did this one first.
A lot of people are saying "it's fine to pause", but I just wanna go the extra mile and say that I'd actually be bothered if you _didn't._ Talking over entire scenes is bad enough (especially when my brain can't filter the two out properly, tries to listen to both, then fails to hear either one), but it also loses you countless opportunities to talk about the parts you weren't paying attention to while remarking on the previous one. The way you do it is the best possible way, as far as I'm concerned. I'd enjoy the experience either way, but this way I truly love it :D

It’s become a yearly tradition of mine to watch this every years around Christmas. Its funny and entertaining and I really am impressed that you guys were able to get THE Kyle Hebert (the English voice actor of adult Gohan and the Narrator of DBZ) to appear as Santa. One my favorite parts is Shenron realizing that he’s being summoned by the same people AGAIN, cause I mean you think he would notice that the same people keep find the dragon balls!

The way Kaiser describes watching Tree of Might for the first time is what watching anime in the 90s felt like. My first exposure to Tenchi was Tenchi Muyo in love and I reacted the sale way.
I remember seeing this on trending and it introduced me to dbz abridged. It was easily the greatest Christmas gift I could find
