    KEEP THE SEWING MACHINE! You never know when you will need it in a pinch. You could be the gal who repairs or makes clothes when needed.

    Keep up the good work, the pantry is fabulous. I've faced a lot of criticism over the years for stocking up my pantry. I mostly get that I'm buying too much by buying sale items that I consistently use and just buy it when you need it. Luckily I don't care what people say and my pantry has come to the rescue time and again. I survived hurricane Sandy, unemployment, high food prices, shortages, etc. all because of my pantry. The security of knowing we have food is a great relief in these troubled times.

      I feel you my family thinks I am nuts and paranoid but when the freeze hit us here in Texas and my brother got his all electric home knocked out he called and TOLD me bringing family to me cause I have a backup woodstove and food like he is entitled to my hard work . You wouldn’t believe how mad he got when I said don’t come empty handed bring blankets and pillows will set you up in our shed building for night sleeping so bring blow up matress’s mom sleeping with me and my kids not giving up their bed for you. For years I begged him to grab a lot out here for bad times get a shed he poopooed me as nuts now is to late as all the cheap tax seized raw land is gone as west coast east coast people running to get away from the blue states have bought them up and doing what I begged brother to do years ago

    I keep old towels and old t-shirts for rags. Old shower curtains work for ground cover outside when hubby is working on the car. Old plastic table cloths work for floor covering when painting. I try to reuse when possible.

    I have been setting up preps now for about 4 years. It's not panic buying and I don't buy out everything. I purchase a little over time. I turned one of our bedrooms into a prep room with a locking system on the bedroom door. My husband and brother didn't really support this. They pretty much thought I was nuts. BUT, then we were hit with (Louisiana) a rare snow storm, polar vortex, ice storm, two back-to-back hurricanes (Laura and Delta). We were in ground zero and both hurricane eyes passed right over us. Then we got to enjoy flooding and COVID. Supplies could not get into Southwest Louisiana for quite some time. Our area was without electricity for 11.5 days. Some areas for almost two months. We are in a logging town and thousands upon thousands of trees fell EVERYWHERE. I think the trees did more damage than the incredable winds. Four huge oak trees fell on top of my brothers home. During the disasters, my hubby and I, my neighbor and brother stayed in our home. It was like one big disaster slumber party for all 11.5 days. I had a Generac, they didn't. Because I had water, internet, wireless, electric, gas and food, suddenly I was the hero!!! They don't think I'm so nuts now!!! I think we have a lot of new preppers now too. LOL!!!

    Beautiful pantry! I use the smallest spare bedroom as our walk in pantry! I just started canning so I'm learning! I just canned chicken legs after I watched your video! My focus for canning has been meats! I think I beat you on the toilet paper. The last time I counted I think I had nearly 500 rolls! I stock food and toilet paper for my husband and I, my parents, my sisters and brother, one niece that lives nearly. No matter how much I've asked that they stock food it has fallen on deaf ears! Thank you for sharing!

    I agree with you creating a pantry will take years. You also learn so much about what you do and don't use. When I shop now its not during winter so during the warmer weather when I do shop at least a third of what I buy is just to back fill my extended pantry. Unlike you I only stock to last 3 months to a year, depending on what it is. Most people here in the UK do not stock a pantry they are too used to going the supermarket at least once a week, which to me is living hand to mouth I want some security. Due to the lockdowns last year a lot of people here in the UK have reconsidered their thoughts. As my extended pantry shares the room with my sewing stuff I get to spend hours a week up there.

    Pantry goals for sure. I gotta little bit of pantry envy, but its all good, keeps me motivated. I've told my husband this is my goal. What outside people don't see is you guys do have 3 grands that you do give to. Our big pantry rack in our room because our room is typically the coldest room in the house. Kids came to me last week and said ma we're OUT of mayo. I laughed and said NOPE, look under the end table. Sure enough 2 big jugs of mayo and 1 Miracle Whip. If we get ice (which is normal for my area of NC) we're not going anywhere till its gone. I'm learning to not being nice. I tell my friends hurricanes or other bad storms are coming and to prepare in plenty of time. If they don't not my problem anymore. I have to worry about our 5. If my mom moves out here then I will prepare for 6.

    They make shelving units that go over things like appliances, etc. You could put one over the sewing machine. It wouldn't be a muscle rack and would need to be tethered to the wall, but it would maximize the vertical storage space over the machine.

    You’re pantry looks great, my family thinks I’m nuts, I don’t buy much if anything for me because I’m focused on the pantry items, living in town makes everyone think everything is in the stores around the corner, that’s not the point, point is what if there is nothing to shop for, I rotate much as I can aside from long term. You’re right it dosent happen overnight, it’s taken me a few years just to get where my pantry is and still need things, I also do it for my kids wether they believe me or not, I do the best I can, money doesn’t grow on trees, other things to pay for but I always buy something for pantry regardless, everyone is like we don’t need that why you buying it, eeerrrrggghhhh, but I do it all anyway, my storage area is in different places where I have room, great pantry tour, yes, sitting and knowing what you accomplished to provide is a satisfying thing! Thank you for showing us your wonderful stock of food and supplies! I also appreciate your mentioning getting older and having that food security. Through the years, I've had economic setbacks from getting hurt at work, and could always turn to my pantry of home canned goods. I may have had to pay the electric bill with a credit card to get by, but there was an entire summer where all I bought at the grocery store was milk, and dog and cat food. And the horses could get by mostly on grass.

    I was so glad to come across this video. I don't have a home right now and am self-isolating at work, so there really is no place for me to store anything; however, I have the idea that I may get a storage unit (climate controlled) so that I can start stocking things up. Now, I have started prepping a little, by getting together a one-week supply of food. I started it about 3 months ago and am almost done with that. After I finish the one-week supply, I will move on to a month's supply. That is the only way I can tackle it without it over-whelming me, and again, I have to find creative ways to store just the one-week supply alone. Before I start on the one-month supply, I will have to rent the storage unit in order to have a place to put it.
    One of the reasons this video was helpful to me, is the fact that you are using a bedroom as your storage place. That is so very encouraging to me because it lets me know that in looking for a place to live, this is something I can keep in mind - in terms of storage. It's a very clever idea and something I would not have thought about on my own.
    Thank you for what you do!

    • @barbarafowler6581
      @barbarafowler6581 2 роки тому +1

      Might want to consider that renting a store unit to store food might not be ideal situation. You have to consider the cost of the food and that it could very well be lost if for some reason you could not keep up with the storage cost and then having no where to move it to. If you are looking to food storage to save money, then you may not really be saving enough to justify paying for storage.

      @@jingles.1228 While that's true, if supply chain issues increase there will be no food available. You need to store at least a few 5 gal buckets to get you through for awhile.... You'll needs gallons of water to go with it. Maybe you know someone who has a basement they would let you put them, at least if you were unable to keep up the storage unit costs. You could barter some food for the free space.

Any how there was a nook on one side and I kept totes there with food. And baking in this tiny, tiny floor to ceiling cabinet . I hid the totes under the nook by the back door, which was a patio door where the laundry room was. Did not have a laundry room just a closet. But, all I’m saying is I made it work for storing food.

Aside from a couple of (potentially) slow turnover items in plastic containers (detergent and cleanser type stuff) I see nothing of concern in how you've done your pantry. I agree about the commercially made rack organizer gizmos. They're not really an improvement over DIY and not worth the cost or space.

      That is the best thing I've heard today! I just Googled the nutrition label, and it's 4 carbs per serving (2 Tbsp) vs. 16 carbs for the regular. I'll keep my eyes peeled for it in the stores. Thanks!

      And air mattress is a good option for getting rid of a b6ed that is used very little. For about $80 you can get a queen sized one. I do that and my guests are just fine with sleeping in the living room on it. I often give up my room to guests and sleep on the air mattress myself. Comfy. Just a thought if you need more space in your room.

    I was just thinking this morning how handy it is when you have to bring a dish to an event but already know you have all the ingredients on hand so there won't be any last minute, rushed trip to the grocery store. I've only been at this since the beginning of last year, but I look at what I already have and think of how much money I've saved. I love that I canned so much ugly chicken at last years prices and vacuum packed and froze so much of the precooked bacon from Costco! My family looked at me sideways. Oh well! I've easily saved $100 in those 2 items alone.

    • @theIAMofME
      @theIAMofME 3 роки тому +2

      @playinatlife I have wondered about the precooked bacon at Costco. What is the normal shelf life for it and does it go passed it??? If so, how far passed the BBD did you use it?

    • @playinatlife5845

      @@theIAMofME The package I have in the refer was purchased last month and the use/freeze by date is next month. My experience is that it's good for months in the refrigerator. I haven't actually kept track, but I have used the Hormel brand precooked bacon after it's been in the refrigerator for 3 or 4 months without any change in appearance, texture, or taste. I do microwave it for 30 sec to 1 minute to get it crisp. Maybe one of the reasons it lasts so long is that it's sugar cured. When vacuum packing it for freezing, I transfer the meat (not the parchment paper) to a vacuum bag. I expect it to be good for years in the freezer in the vacuum bags.

    I've gotten my dogs to stop being afraid of thunder, lightening and fireworks by giving them a single Cheerio every time there's a loud noise. It only takes a few times to desensitize your dogs. You have to sit right by them when doing this. Your dogs will quickly associate scary noises with treats and cuddles and will stop being afraid.
    We had a dog we got at an older age who was very skittish at first. She didn't like loud kitchen noises so I purposefully dropped unbreakable things like muffin tins on the floor. It only took a few times to desensitize her to these noises.
    Single Cheerios are a dog owner's friend!

My pantry and freezers will hold me and I am at the point I eat from there and restock every few weeks on what I have used. I only really need bread and milk and produce on any regular bases. Thanks for sharing your ideas and have a Blessed day.

    You could put risers under the bed and store in under the bed storage boxes. That would work for medical supplies and old towels. I wish I had all my pantry in one spot but its scattered -- I have a ranch home with a full basement so its in the basement.

    Thank you so much for sharing this! It's always great to see how others arrange their pantries and supplies and see what I may have forgotten (dishwasher tablets - doh!)! I totally agree about buying two shelving units and combining them to get the right shelf spacing - I only can pints and smaller, so having shelves on my canned goods units that can accommodate half gallons is a waste for me and I can store SO much more on the same amount of floor space (I do have the shelves on my dry goods unit spaced to accommodate half gallons). I also completely agree to only stock what your family will actually use. I stock shelf-stable rice milk and tubs of CoffeeMate due to dietary restrictions in my family, so even if I see a great price on powdered milk it's useless to me and it would just take up valuable space on my shelves. Even before recent events I've found my pantry infinitely helpful during power outage, bad weather, illnesses, life transitions, etc. My pantry is still a work in progress, but I think that's the best way for it to be - we're always learning new things and letting go of things that no longer serve us, so my pantry reflects that as well.

    I made the decision at New Years to add something each month to food storage. I buy 1-2 cans or bags each month and I’ve assembled a good supply. I’m definitely selecting products that I know I will use. Mainly single ingredient items.
