I’ve seen people point out Kirito’s asthma and that it may be the reason for his mom pulling him out of kendo, and Suguha talking it up could’ve come off as taunting even though she might not be aware of his asthma. I had kind of a similar thought… Regardless of the reasons for him leaving kendo, Kirito still managed to find another interest that he got really into, so of course he’d stick with it. Suguha, being a child, thinks the way to get him back is to talk it up, which doesn’t work. And he’s not wrong for not going back, he should be allowed to be his own person with his own interests. On that note, to hear his sister talk up kendo so much when he’s not there anymore, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he assumed she was fine with him not being there anymore. So they both developed separate interests that took up time they used to have together, and from what she was putting out, it seemed she didn’t mind. •Also delving a bit more into the kendo stuff: Their grandfather was apparently a piece of work, caring only about Kirito and being extra hard on Suguha to get her to quit. There’s a good chance she’s piling on resentment towards him onto her resentment for Kirito, especially with her taking up the perceived responsibility of ^manning up for him after he left. She didn’t need to do that, she could’ve quit also. But if you look at how she words it, I think she truly did like kendo in spite of their grandpa’s harshness “I tried to make it seem fun, so you could realize what you were missing.” Kendo is fun! You’re missing out not being here! Unless she means he was missing out on spending time with her like he used to. But she is still doing kendo so 🤷♂️ ^I wouldn’t be surprised if this is why she emasculates him, having come to perceive him as weak for quitting •Also! There’s one line in her vent, only one, but I’d say extra telling, about her previous perception of Kirito. “I wanted to be just like you.” She looked up to her brother, to the point of wanting to learn the same thing he was going to. She put him up on a pedestal and thought she could be on it with him. But from her perspective, he stepped down from it and left her on it. And she took it upon herself to fill that role in the hopes that it would bring him back. All this to say she’s being very unfair to him, placing a lot of expectation and perceptions on him and being upset that he didn’t meet them. But not to say she’s necessarily wrong for doing so, because she was just a kid. I think she’s definitely wrong for how she’s been treating him without giving reason. She needs to work through all these unresolved childhood issues and also recognize that her brother didn’t stop caring for her and abandon her, _he was also just a kid._ Idk about in this, but in the original, Kirito is only a year older. I hated how the original show went. If my sister/cousin confessed to me, I don’t think I could simply move past that living under the same roof and all. You should’ve taken that to the grave, Leafa!
@@ZackagonXMto be fair to canon Leafa- She wasn’t in love with Kazuto. In the original, Leafa didn’t figure out Kirito was her brother until the equivalent of this abridged episode. Kirito and Leafa canonically figure it out at the same time. Over the course of the arc, she’s developed feelings for Kirito. She unknowingly developed feelings for her cousin. She wasn’t in love with Kirito before SAO cause Kirito didn’t exist, and she definitely wouldn’t knowingly start pining for her cousin.
1748 - William Cullen is the first person to observe and demonstrate artificial refrigeration via evaporative cooling 1834 - Jacob Perkins invents the first vapor compression system for refrigerators 1876 - Carl von Linde patents a new process for liquefying gases used in artificial refrigeration 1913 - Fred W. Wolf invents the first home electric refrigerator 1918 - William C. Durant begins mass producing the first home refrigerator with a self-contained compressor 1927 - The home refrigerator starts to see widespread popularity across the U.S. Iceboxes remained popular, because they were much, much cheaper, but fridges definitely were a thing in the 1920's
In the original show, they do make clear that spriggons are presented at character creation as the sneaky, backstabbing fairy. Complete with illusion magic and treasure finding skills. Meaning that they have the same stereotype as rogues in d and d. It was not until the abridged series that any hint of real-life racism was apparent, to me at least.
44:00 Yeah they decided that Obi-Wan's monk look fit the image of the Jedi much better than Luke's all black apparel. Created a nice addition to the visual language of the films were the good guys all wear earth tones and the villains wear dark or sterile colours, like black, white, red, or metallic.
Wasn’t it a thing in ROTJ where we weren’t sure whether Luke was still good or not because of the dark clothes and choking out Jaba’s guards? Makes sense why the robes were picked for the Jedi if black was supposed to be ambiguous.
@collecter343 I think that was just because they were still developing what was and wasn't associated wirh the dark side yet. As they said in the video, Luke's black get up was meant to be the official Jedi uniform, as they were originally conceptualized as a type of Preatorian guard, before evolving into the Knight Errant image they are now recognized as.
George Lucas didn't forget. If it was in the first draft then he couldn't have forgotten. He just changed his mind, and tbh, it was a change for the better.
With that last revelation, her breakdown earlier in the episode hits harder. "Am I the problem? I don't want to be the problem!" Is it her fault Kirito 'abandoned' her? He's nice to other people, so is it something she did to drive him away? Pinwheel
I remember when I first watched the original show and saw that Suguha was in love with her cousin was one thing but I never thought she would actually confess those feelings to him. Did she not imagine how awkward that would be since they live in the same house?! 😩
@@alicepbg2042They are cousins in the actual show. If I'm not mistaken on this (I haven't watched the show in years, so sorry for possible mistakes), they were raised as siblings and their parents never told them the truth about it. Kirito found out about it when he was younger (like 12 or 14) which made things akward for him and he distanced himself from her, and she found out while he was stuck in Sao. That's why she fell in love with him, because cousins being in love is somewhat okay in Japan (I think it's legal, and at least used to be somewhat accepted).
@alicepbg2042 No, they actually *are* cousins. What had happened was that Kazuto was adopted into their family at a very early age, likely while Suguha was still an infant, and thus she grew up completely around Kazuto from the moment she had cognizance. Meanwhile, Kazuto likely had vague memories of his real parents, and when he grew to around 12-14 years old he had asked their mom about it and she deemed him ready to know the truth. And thus the awkward atmosphere between Kazuto & Suguha blossomed as we knew it in the original show.
Shoji being so horrible justifies all of the horrible things that Asuna has done to him. Also, those who have watched Alicization can already tell that Shoji will be the scientist that becomes Quinella's co-conspirator and fuckboy.
@@carlbowen7965 "... *used* an ice box" means the icebox was technology already invented before this one was. They are mutually exclusive inventions in the part of history you are referencing. In fact, artificial refrigeration was first observed & demonstrated by William Cullen in 1748.
@Zachattack1cub I am aware. But the first refrigerator used an icebox to keep everything cool (hence the icebox refrigerator) but the compression refrigerator (which is still used today) was invented in 1918, thus answering their question on when the modern refrigerator was invented (which was before 1920)
This episode goes deep, probably one of my favorites in the abridged series, it's a level of writing and execution so impressive it deserves an oscar. Also, really cool to have one of the writers to follow along and give context to the production! *pinwheel*
I think that the way they went with this version is fantastic, and it feels like a real sibling conflict. Edit: Also thank you SO MUCH for giving us the full script of the server maintenance announcement! I had only caught tidbits when listening before, and I was so curious about the rest.
I gotta say when I first watched this ep I was not ready for how hard it would hit. The jokes were all hilarious of course, but Suguha.... her VA... that ending rant... As an older sibling this is the sort of thing that tears your heart apart hearing, and their is always a constant little nagging thought of if you are not doing good enough for your little brother or sister, worried they hate you. To the something witty team if you are reading this, you nailed it.
I love it because Kirito actually gets relegated to a side character position for the Alfheim arc. Like, he's still driving the plot and everything, but all that is in the background while Suguha is honestly the real protagonist for the moment.
I love that episode. They managed to correct the tentacle scene AND Kirito and Suguha's plot point. It's so good! No wonder it takes so long to release an episode, nobody can complain when SWE puts so much work in their abridged series. And you know what I love as well? Pinwheels!

Alicia, I support most of the content you bring.... By that I mean the original creators, but I must say, after seeing that and what you bring as extra, I really appreciate all you do. You shine a bright light of laughter and hilarity to my otherwise dark world. I'm normally a bright person myself, but with a divorce, and the risk of never seeing my precious babies again, I can truly say that your content has kept me going. I've been in content creation and amateur voice acting for 15 years, but have never really broken out of my shell.... I Idolize Takahata101, and am close to his "Cell" voice from TFS DBZ Abridged, as well as other voices, but I've never had the courage to step forward and put myself out there.... Your channel gives me the strength to attempt to do that. From the bottom of my heart, I really wish you the best, medically, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Tell Rich I said Hi. Much Love! I'll continue to lurk in the background. I actually started this comment before I finished the vid... Right at the beginning, actually.... But the codeword was, "KenWheel," if I'm not mistaken... At least, that's what I heard... And I never skip your intros....
Pinewheel, that intro made me hyped for this video, also the collaborations with abridged creators may be how the universe apologizes for your channels hacking
First of all, if anyone at work steals my lunch, they will rue the day they even bothered existing. Second, damn do I love how hard the VA for Suguha went for that last scene. 100 out of 10 performance!
Btw in the OG show they said that 5 players I think stacked on top of each other and boosted one another to the top because flying has a time limit but by 5 players flying on top of each other till the time limit they could have snapped the picture of Asuna in the cage
I knew it was coming. I knew where it was going to end. And when it happened I still screamed "YOU CAN'T END IT THERE YOU BASTARDS!" at the screen when I saw the end-cards appear. I was so unreasonably angry even though I knew it was not only the obvious place to end it but the only place to end the episode. Something Witty Entertainment truly know how to transform this show to the next level.
Now you have to wait for the next episode like the rest of us! That last scene is always such a well done scene in every way! Glad you got to have a SWE member to join you! I had no idea what the patch notes fully said so I am so glad I know now!
This is still my favorite episode of the whole abridged (so far). I mean, wverything about it was just done so well, and that ending man... Oh, and the pinwheel
First things first: Pinwheel. Second, as someone who’s writing style has been heavily influenced by abridged series it’s amazing to actually here commentary from the creators, love what your doing Alicia!
I cannot wait for the next episode, Something Witty do not get enough credit for all this incredible work. And yeah, this latest episode was a real gut puncher. Bravo! 🧡🧡🧡
I wonder if Something Witty considered having Yui curse. As a non player character (not to mention her ability to hack the game) it'd be kinda justified for the profanity filter to not work on her. And it'd be hilarious to have all the teens and adults unable the say any profanities, while the tiny fairy curses up a storm. ^^
53:27 I think what’s even better about this scene in the abridged, is how SWE’s team makes a cool nod back to the rule about swearing in the game, by ALLOWING Suguha to swear during this sequence. As Leafa/Suguha emphasized in the beginning of this arc, Alfheim has a profanity filter, and so even when she vented to Kirito in the game at 23:41 she couldn’t swear for obvious reasons, even though you could imagine she WANTED to since Kirito-the party at the source of her conflict-was right there to hear it. But once Kirito catches on, and they return to reality, the writers very cleverly took advantage of their in-world literary device of the profanity filter being GONE. Allowing Suguha to finally let loose with everything she’s been holding back to scream at her brother’s face, with the occasional swears, was a phenomenal choice! Everything she wanted to say, but quite LITERALLY could not (due to the rules, and her double-life as Leafa).
I'd argue that episode 17's cliffhanger moment not being funny-haha made SWE's work even more worthwhile. Despite starting out as just a parody of the original, the story they came up with brought more value to the characters they developed and nurtured over the years than the original creators could ever aspire to. They took something (maybe) good, made it (definitely) great, and continue to hand-mold it into something (undeniably) grand.
Bet'cha never thought you'd ever feel bad for the creepy tentacle slug. But DANG, that "Heeeeeeey Shoji," I can understand why he didn't want Asuna knowing he was working that day. "NO NO NO PLEASE, I'M SORRY THAT I LIED! AH! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
Pinwheel! I know they were probably going to reach out to each other eventually, but I will take a tiny bit of credit for being the chatter who let Alicia know SomethingWitty watched her reactions.
Pinwheel! So awesome you had Mack with you for this. It was great to watch your reaction and hear him talk about stuff for the show. Hearing SWE talk in the past, I believe it was Mack, fairly early in the show who had the idea for heading in a slightly more emotional/serious direction and wasn't sure Matty would go for it. I'm so glad they did though, because their funny/serious balance is fantastic and really sets SAOA apart.
Something I see in reactions when saoa gets serious is how they start looking for the humour, and struggling to find it. It reminds me of “Art is Dead” by bo burnham. The laughter is uncomfortable, they try to find humour simply because it’s what they’re primed to expect, but there is none, and all you have left is the genuine masterful emotion and pain.
44:19 Ok, George clearly did not not forget his own lore as he had the Jedi in the correct outfit in the original draft. What happened was that all the Expanded Universe media in the intervening time between the Original Trilogy and Prequels depicted Jedi as wearing robes. Hence the robes as the Jedi uniform were already popularized. (And in fairness, it does fit with the idea of them being warrior monk samurai.) (As for the Gungan thing, while a lot more minor it is technically still a thing in the episode as it exists. Gungans are the actual natives while the Humans on Naboo are colonizers. That dislike and hence Gungans initially not wanting to help the humans against the Trade Federation is quite literally in the movie (even if Obi-wan goes "you and the Nabooians (humans) are in a symbiotic relationship").)
Did she say canwheel or pinwheel for the secret word? Also, the roger-roger from star wars is iconic, I literally heard it only when I was like 9 and still remember it to this day.

...which will only happen in 2040
I hated how the original show went. If my sister/cousin confessed to me, I don’t think I could simply move past that living under the same roof and all. You should’ve taken that to the grave, Leafa!
Could’ve at least said it BEFORE he went into SAO.

Then why did-… dammit Reki!
1748 - William Cullen is the first person to observe and demonstrate artificial refrigeration via evaporative cooling
1834 - Jacob Perkins invents the first vapor compression system for refrigerators
1876 - Carl von Linde patents a new process for liquefying gases used in artificial refrigeration
1913 - Fred W. Wolf invents the first home electric refrigerator
1918 - William C. Durant begins mass producing the first home refrigerator with a self-contained compressor
1927 - The home refrigerator starts to see widespread popularity across the U.S.
Iceboxes remained popular, because they were much, much cheaper, but fridges definitely were a thing in the 1920's
Thanks for the history lesson ❤
I knew they had fridges on WW2 Destroyers so they definitely had something before then.

Yeah they decided that Obi-Wan's monk look fit the image of the Jedi much better than Luke's all black apparel.

HAHA! Not even hearing his voice and I already know who it is! I LOVE their DnD campaign!
Been waiting weeks for them to react to this Oscar Performance
Man, I've been eagerly anticipating your reaction to this one after your comment about how hard Suguha's VA went in the previous one!
Same here, I had to pause the previous react when she said that to half-laugh, half yell "Just wait, that's nothing, that's nothing!"
George Lucas didn't forget. If it was in the first draft then he couldn't have forgotten. He just changed his mind, and tbh, it was a change for the better.
Would have been a weird look for the Jedi with their whole “humble monk” shtick. Except maybe for Ayala, not much different really.
...cousin? they are siblings.
@@gabouchar9977 did you just "not by blood" this topic?
@@Zachattack1cub weird line to draw... they were raised as siblings but since they aren't "real siblings" that somehow stops counting? Wtf?
Shoji being so horrible justifies all of the horrible things that Asuna has done to him.
Also, those who have watched Alicization can already tell that Shoji will be the scientist that becomes Quinella's co-conspirator and fuckboy.
I can’t believe that a abridged series made me feel more emotionally invested in the drama of the characters than the original series. Well done.
14:35 the icebox refrigerator was invented in 1913. The home refrigerator was invented in 1918 for mass production
the icebox was invented in the mid 1800's
@j.c.cannon2112 1913: American Fred W. Wolf invented the first home electric refrigerator, which used an icebox.

So, my favorite random novelty thing while out at the beach is a pinwheel. I just love how they spin in the wind.
It's funny that Kazuto said that their mom brought home a wild animal (Suguha), when HE'S THE ADOPTED ONE.
40:37 Nobody shame her for that. She remembered it pretty well for having only seen the movies once.
Ahh, Pinwheel... Truly the hardest *snickers* boss of Dark Souls 1^^
Even outside of the specifics here, the idea of someone changing for the better, but they never did that for YOU is so real.
Edit: Also thank you SO MUCH for giving us the full script of the server maintenance announcement! I had only caught tidbits when listening before, and I was so curious about the rest.
Having the co-creator was so fun he really added a lot off intel!
This was great. I love to here about people having fun in the writers room.
Pinwheel! I love how REAL they made the broken family bond between our two main characters.
Pinwheels!
Also you can't begin to understand how happy I am that you're the only reactor I've watched that got how gross the foie gras joke was. That joke genuinely made me gag
I just looked it up because of this comment and now I totally get it. Who puts that on a layer cake??? Who does that and yet has the audacity to be disgusted by a wedding dress being red and black??????

Somebody got wires twisted in the timeline. This serious and touching story about siblings trying to fix a broken familial relationship got put in the Abridged, and somebody accidentally put the stupid weirdly horny parody version into the original series.
Therefore created a paradox in which if not for original SAO, SWE would not make this plotlike in the Abridged

12:50 Fun fact, according to Google:
"The first electric domestic refrigerators were invented and produced by Fred W. Wolf of Fort Wayne Indiana in 1913."
That editing screw up has the best mindset behind it, as long as it’s funny.

Pinewheel, that intro made me hyped for this video,

In 1913, the first electric refrigerators for home and domestic use were invented and produced by Fred W. Wolf of Fort Wayne, Indiana
What a friggin performance from Sugu's abridged VA. Holy hell. She made that WORK!
Now you have to wait for the next episode like the rest of us! That last scene is always such a well done scene in every way! Glad you got to have a SWE member to join you! I had no idea what the patch notes fully said so I am so glad I know now!
I feel bad for that guy with the giant pinwheel. Prolly meant a lot to him. Until maintenance got rid of it.

This is still my favorite episode of the whole abridged (so far). I mean, wverything about it was just done so well, and that ending man... Oh, and the pinwheel
this series serves the best ever acting and VA the emotions can really be heard through there voice this series is just really amazing.

One of my favorite moments in Pokémon Black/White is when you take the pinwheel with N and he talks about his ambitions.
Such a nice lore moment.
53:38 I’ve watched this scene so many times, why is this the one that gets tears from me?!
GAWWWD DAMN!! that ending actuallly got me tearing up 🥲🥲
And now you are like the rest of us, being forced to wait a year for each episode.
First things first: Pinwheel.
Second, as someone who’s writing style has been heavily influenced by abridged series it’s amazing to actually here commentary from the creators, love what your doing Alicia!
They're take on the sibling relationship was so much better than the original. That and the missing gamer mentality.
Look at you Alicia, making connections and snagging prime co-hosts. I'm legit happy for you.
Also... Pinwheel. 🐀
And you were worried about this season... lol
Oh have fun you great blooming Pinwheel!
Awesome that Alicia is finally reacting to this.
Hoping we get more new SAOA episodes soon!
I cannot wait for the next episode, Something Witty do not get enough credit for all this incredible work. And yeah, this latest episode was a real gut puncher. Bravo! 🧡🧡🧡
Also just resized kirito finding out leafa js his sister IS very luke skywalker.
She totally can but is just waiting for a perfectly appropriate moment to drop a single 'Fuck'!
Oh man I can’t wait to see how the dry cleaners across the street from mine react to THAT ending…
But DANG, that "Heeeeeeey Shoji,"
I can understand why he didn't want Asuna knowing he was working that day.
Wow, thank you to both of you.
DS1 Catacombs boss.
Such a good rewrite.
(And in fairness, it does fit with the idea of them being warrior monk samurai.)
(As for the Gungan thing, while a lot more minor it is technically still a thing in the episode as it exists.
