  • Richard Jones of www.london-walk... continues his journey through the Kent that Charles Dickens knew with a visit to the village of Cobham to see the Leather Bottle Inn, which Dickens featured in Pickwick Papers and the New College of Cobham, a wonderful tucked away oasis that dates back to the 1360's.

Enjoyed very much. My fourth great grandmother, Mary Lott née Fielder (b. 1773) was born and raised in Cobham. She met and later married her husband Matthew Lott (b. 1772 in Boxley) who was a bricklayer from Luddesdown. After they married, they settled in Meopham where they had 12 children all surviving to adulthood. They later moved to Gravesend where the large family spent 50 years as publicans living and working at The Globe Tavern/Inn/Public House. I look forward to visiting Cobham as my ancestral family home village.

    C.Dickens Born 1812 February 7th.
He was aged 20 in 1832 February 7th during the reign of King William and aged 24 in February 1836 in the last year of King Williams reign when he also that year started wring his first book, 'The Pickwick Papers.
Are there please any documented evidence of C.Dickens frequenting Cobham as well as dates. TY.
