This might be one of my favorite ever episodes. Not only is Hannah Fry *fabulous* as host (no surprise there), but the other guests are stellar, too. Paul and Stephen form a pretty spectacular 1-2 act; I'm not sure I can remember a single pairing as delightfully synchronous as those two in recent seasons. Fantastic episode, stupendous upload; so very grateful to ViVaHD!
Running for 33 years and the charm, wit and credibility of the two stalwarts is undiminished. In fact I'd say this series is potentially a highlight if a highlight can be picked from such a solidly high benchmark as set by this show.
French viewer here. Don't really care if small details about Napoleon are portrayed inaccurately. However, the man was a narcissistic tyrant who left hundreds of thousand dead and millions destitute in his wake. That should be portrayed accurately. Thanks for the upload! Comment edited after reading @zigisambak's answer.
@@zigisamblak Yes true, but what I meant is that petty details are not what's important (and France's right wing press seem to be focusing on that). Of course, he should be portrayed as the ruthless tyrant he was.
Wow, thank you for this opinion! I read a history of an aristocratic family in what´s today Latvia, and for 20 years there, Napoleon was their biggest fear. The city of Riga ordered mass evacuation when they saw a cloud of dust approaching. Turned out it was a herd of goats. Just tells you how terrified they were of him, even thousands of kilometres from France. On the other hand, I live close to where the battle of Austerlitz took place (now Slavkov, Czechia) and there are wonderful people, descendants of the French soldiers wounded there, and great international events every year. So every cloud has a silver lining and Napoleon sort of contributed to the interconnection of Europe...
Honestly I mean it's not a bloody documentary, it's a feature film, when has a feature film about a historical event ever not been full of inaccuracies and inconsistencies? It's not reference material it's freakin entertainment, if you want historic accuracy read a biography not a Ridley Scott blockbuster. As someone who works in technology, don't cry to me about inaccuracies in entertainment media, sheesh.
There's been a trend for the past couple years of recurring presenters being put back onto the panel. Jo Brand, Jack Dee, Clive Myrie, and now Stephen. The results are sometimes better than others, but it's always nice to see Paul seem like he's genuinely enjoying himself.
This was a good episode. My favorite part was Fry telling Merton he was the one wasting time when he was complaining. He moans about quiz stuff he doesn't like all the time, and it's usually funny, but it was great to see someone do the equivalent of telling him to shut up. Now that's a presenter who has given lectures.
Googling Hannah Fry, I learned that she has a PhD in mathematics, and is a math professor at University College London. I can’t think of any American professional mathematicians who have a pop-culture presence, but the UK has several.
That is because in the UK documentaries and science programs are narrated by scientists, who know the subject matter and communicate their enthusiasm, while in the USA they use actors.
A 'morning smoke'? Are you a time traveller from the Victorian era? After your smoke, will you receive a cousin in the drawing room, and together, go for a 'constitutional ( a brisk long walk, for those unfamiliar with this era), to cathartically cough up the phlegm, as your doctor prescribed? It's just a long time since anyone I know has used that phrase, or smoked, if ever. To me, 'morning smoke' sounds like a phrase of a by-gone era.

I wait for it every week. Its so tempting to watch the shortened version but it is always worth the wait.
I always watch both! I’m greedy, me.
Paul and Stephen were on fire this episode, but the whole cast was on point
United we stand. Were all in the same small boat atm.

One of the best episodes I've seen in a while. Stephen and Paul should have a show to present a monthly recap of the news together.
This is what I thought at 32:44. They were playing off each other so well. It's definitely a show that I'd watch.
