It's a visual masterpiece, it's the closest Bollywood has been to a retro mob drama movie. It did have negatives as well but it did not deserve to be bashed from ALL DIRECTIONS !!!
Great elements covered. But I disagree over two points: 1) Amit Trivedi's music was really good, probably his most underrated album. I remember it had even gotten good music reviews back then. 2) People are divided on this, but I think KJo's performance was actually decent! He was far from being the biggest problem of the movie (that being the very flat plot and lacking content)

majority of Indian audience enjoy movies like baaghi 3 and radhe. I don't know what is wrong with them. I just want that good films like bhavesh joshi, mard ko dard nahi hota and karvi hawa to make profit, so directors can make more good movies without overthinking about the consequences.
The movies you mentioned like Bhavesh Joshi, Mard ko dard nhi hota are good. I'm not a big fan of the latter but the former is actually a good movie. These type of movies should not bother about profit and should try to be as low in their budgets as possible. As a great director once said, If a director has a vision then he should make a movie out of it... That is art. Art is always personal and intimate.
Bombay Valvet was supposed to be a trilogy originally planned in mid 2000s, with Hollywood director Danny Boyle as producer but things didn't work out back then. The version we saw in 2015 was a condensed version of the original planned trilogy. So when you first write a story which was slated to span three films and condense it to make one film out of it, there ought to be some evident flaws. Personally I don't think it's Kashyap's best yet it's a fairly good film. The backdrop of early days of Bombay, the darkness in the glitz, broken characters, and a subtle theme of Mumbai being in its own drunkenness when the entire nation was facing severe problems, this particular thing was very subtle and conveyed through a stand-up like monologue by Varun Grover and dialogues like " Bombay ke bahar India hai...." But unfortunately this and other powerful themes were short on translation on the silver screen.

Fifi kuch tere dil me fifi kuch mere dil me, fifi zamana hai bura..... oh the songs were another level with this movie. Glad to see a video discussing this art piece of a movie.
Mumbai ki waterlogging ki problem ki vajah se film ki shooting postpone ho jati aur phir dates ke issue hote that's why they opt for Colombo uss time media ko to yehi bola gya tha. But iss film ke flop hone ka bada reason was Anurag's Ambitiousness of making this one a spectacle and staying true with the source material and also styling the film in his own way, he tried to go two separate ways simultaneously.
Agree with all your points but KJo's acting was much better than I expected. Kashyap's strength lies in luxury of story telling. That's why GoW became such a cult classic unlike many other gangster movies. You saw the tiniest of details of the characters' lives and yet the movie also covered decades of story. In Bombay Velvet, only the Jazz culture of Bombay and Goa could get that treatment. I wanted to see more of the lives of the trade unionists, the capitalists, the actual politics in the country. Some plot points were silly as well- the twin sister, killing KJo with butter knife, the fake gun etc. Ranbir's look was also distracting as it reminded me too much of Scarface. The top floor fight was a little too similar. I understand that these were tributes but it felt like a different movie altogether. On the contrary, the Godfather influences on GoW were far smoother.
Finally an explanation for the failure of this movie!!!!!These plot holes and your points regarding the not-so-good character building make so much sense!! I went for first day first show for this movie! and I really liked it and was super surprised to see that it didn't do well..really liked the songs of this movie

Felt the vibes of Casino (1995) directed by Martin Scorsese when I rewatched it last year. Sure, the movie has plenty of flaws. The movie was an art movie which tried to be commercial at some points. Saying this to an Anurag Kashyap movie is bad, but it could've had a better camerawork and editing. The love story didn't feel natural and the dialogue could've been somewhat better. The cast did a good job. The cinematography at times was very good. What went wrong in this movie for me is that Anurag Kashyap failed to create another character. The City could've been another character if he'd have shown some common folks doing this and that. I believe that the 4 hour cut is better. The movie has a bag full of style. Style oozes off of this movie and has this Godardesque grandeur to it but it fails miserably in holding on to that style.

Bombay Velvet story should have been made into a webseries rather than a movie which in turn would have made it more interesting and give the director a chance to explore more of the book from which it was adapted. The movie turned out to be a love story sprinkled with bureaucracy, politics, crime, Bombay etc.. here and there.
Yogi - Ranbir and Anushka played characters that have been used, abused or exploited by parents and/or closed and trusted people. They trauma bonded. Like Romeo and Juliet they didn't plan anything they just went in full force and made it up as they went along. It's a tragedy and a good one at that. The negative was the Hollywood-ification which felt more like KJo than Kashyap who has never missed on making his character absolutely real. Even at their most Looney Tunes-ish, Gulaal and Wasseypur characters looked, acted and talked like people you'd know irl. Like real people in fantastical situations. Here, it was all fantastical people in fantastical situations. I don't give Anurag Kashyap a hard time about this one because he was trying something new and filmmakers who have consistently given movies that had no business being as good as they were - must be allowed to miss their mark every now and then as they only learn and improve from them. Unless we start absolutely shitting on them which makes them hesitant to try anything new or experiment again.

When you cut short a 5 hour long film which into 2 hours which was originally supposed to be a 2 part/ trilogy. But due to corporate influence of making a film movie it was ambitiously shot for a 5 hour movie release and shot down by censor board and corporate feedback to cut down to a short version with song and dance. I am sure if a proper 5 hour long edit is made and release in OTT in part or even as a whole, it will be a very different output. Gangs of Wasseypur was released in 2 parts, hence it is what it is; giving space for characters to grow and storytelling to get its space and time to breathe.

I love Ranbir because of his unique roles. He clearly nails all his roles but people in India like masala movies all those item numbers hero villian and all those mass masala things. He is my favourite hero after Hritk. In today's world taste of people is changing which is good for the art directors like Anurag Kashyap and Anurag Basu to show their art.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Sardar Udham was also that type of movie....i had watched both of them....the story was so good but i personally don't like it ....so that's the reason........and at last.... the main problm with d film was its cinematography. Wide angles should have been used to show the setes and an era that they had created by investing so much of money.If u see gangubai kathiyawadi SLB used many wide angle shots which show the set from different angles and which pool us inside that ambeiance... thats where according to me bombay velvet fails.
Anurag is the one of the finest director of Indian cinema, the movies made by him are ahead of it's time. Indian cinema and audience are not ready of these cult movies. They just give business to shit movies like radhay, suriyavansi, housefull, singam, etc. I mean u can imagine the mindset of Indian people's, here a person who surrender his citizenship is also making flims on patriotism and his flims doing good business at box office.
This was such an over rated movie. Ranbir and his same old “lovable rogue” character, which is basically his default is frankly nauseating at the moment. The only reason I saw it was because of Anurag Kashyap. People like to pretend as if this was a thinking person’s movie that didn’t get its due. The reality is that it’s a typical commercial movie, masquerading as a thinking person’s movie. Even poor Anushka’s lip job couldn’t save this movie.

Please tell me why Sanju is not a good performance because I think performances of actors (excluding Anushka Sharma ) were only the saving grace part of the movie. And honestly the character in Bombay velvet is so bad no one can save it even if Daniel day Lewis comes in the anurag directorial

I love Ranbir because of his unique roles. He clearly nails all his roles but people in India like masala movies all those item numbers hero villian and all those mass masala things. He is my favourite hero after Hritk. In today's world taste of people is changing which is good for the art directors like Anurag Kashyap and Anurag Basu to show their art.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Sardar Udham was also that type of movie....i had watched both of them....the story was so good but i personally don't like it ....so that's the reason........and at last.... No,but when you talk about negative perception ,the dark knight faced the same for taking heath ledger as joker ,every one was laughing and already declared it as a flop but after seeing jokers performance every one was shocked ,the movie earned billion dollars even Christian bales acting was also fabulous.and the movie also got oscar

the main problm with d film was its cinematography. Wide angles should have been used to show the setes and an era that they had created by investing so much of money.If u see gangubai kathiyawadi SLB used many wide angle shots which show the set from different angles and which pool us inside that ambeiance... thats where according to me bombay velvet fails.

Anurag is the one of the finest director of Indian cinema, the movies made by him are ahead of it's time. Indian cinema and audience are not ready of these cult movies. They just give business to shit movies like radhay, suriyavansi, housefull, singam, etc. I mean u can imagine the mindset of Indian people's, here a person who surrender his citizenship is also making flims on patriotism and his flims doing good business at box office.
Bollywood should stop focusing in dump love Stories and use brain for making good movies like Hollywood movies

This was such an over rated movie. Ranbir and his same old “lovable rogue” character, which is basically his default is frankly nauseating at the moment. The only reason I saw it was because of Anurag Kashyap.
People like to pretend as if this was a thinking person’s movie that didn’t get its due. The reality is that it’s a typical commercial movie, masquerading as a thinking person’s movie.
Even poor Anushka’s lip job couldn’t save this movie.
