    Well I had my maidan voyage on my new Brompton thanks to you and your channel, I only went 20 miles just to see how it rides, I loved it, unlike when I’m out on my road bike usually starring at the road in front, head down worrying about average speed, this was the opposite, slowed right down and looking and enjoying the countryside. I really did enjoy it, had a wee issue with the derailleur but easy enough to fix once home. I’m so looking forward to your next adventure. Thanks for the motivation 👍

      You should Linda, I am sure you have plenty of wonderful places in the north too. Great to revisit Scotland after my recent LeJog - although your photography is a little better than my little snaps! My route took me up through the middle of the Highlands to join your NC500 at Tongue and then on to JOG. I got to Tongue at the end of June and the weather for me was hot sun most days, I struggled with the midges sometimes but, like you, I did have a headnet and some spray which helped. Partly because of the midges, I think next time I go to Scotland I'll train it up to Inverness and then hire a little campervan for a couple of weeks and go see some of the islands using the van as a base and doing day trips out on the Brompton. Loved your film and the beautiful music Gianni, thank you so much for sharing :)

    That is dedication to your art: doing a separate pedallling uphill towards and away from the camera! Well done that man! I've just finished watching your fantastic trip and enjoyed it thoroughly. I've stayed a couple of times in Inverness and Ullapool (videod a really wet solo hike there) a couple of times, first time in a caravan by the shore when my oldest son was just a toddler (he's now approaching 40!). I paddled on Loch Broom in my kayak then but wouldn't mind giving that another try today. Thanks for a nice share. I subscribed of course!

      I must admit there was a fair bit of walking involved on those steep ramps… if that wasn’t bad enough as you can see on that day it was also very gusty with a strong head wind that made even walking hard.

    Wonderful, wonderful video.
    Someone ( read Twit) who fancies himself on par with a combination of Martin Scorsese and Rick Steves offered this bit of drivel…’Unless there is a unique reason, travel vds are better when it (sic) focuses on the visual scenery than the rider’.
    Visual scenery? Hmmmmm.
    What absolute nonsense.
    Your film was perfect. I plan on viewing all of your films as a result of watching this one.
    I own a Brompton and I enjoyed watching you tackle the roads. And holding a selfie stick to boot. I’ve driven much of the area you travelled. The Applecross Road is the most exciting road I’ve ever travelled.
    Thanks for the adventure.

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  Рік тому

      Thanks a lot for the drivel! I also think a good travel video is more about the scenery but the story is also important. Probably a combination of both is good but then you can’t please everyone. Happy I didn’t waste too much of your time…

I've driven through all the places shown on your video and have had a few vacations in Lochinver which as you say is a fantastic place to visit. I went for a swim in Achmelvich Bay many years ago on a hot sunny day in July but the sea temperature is only 13 - 14 C at that time of the year, so I didn't stay in for too long. Keep posting.

    I really enjoy the results of all your efforts in your videos! All the high quality production - photo angles and music editing - really shines to me. And the close attention you give to details, especially in the content of what works for you. Thanks. I'm curious if you used a carbon fiber seat post on this trip? If you did, and recommend it, could you share who made it, and what yoir thoughts are? I'm considering a titanium post but would like to go lighter with carbon fiber, but am hestitant because of long term durabiliy concerns while touring.

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  3 роки тому +2

      Many thanks Clark. No, I have never used a carbon fibre seat post so I can't really comment on durability. Titanium I would assume is sure strong enough if not as light. In my setup I also put about 10 kg of my rucksack weight on the saddle bar, therefore increasing the stress on top of my weight. In my current Brompton I have installed a telescopic seat post as I find it really convenient to be able to remove the top and the saddle which makes also the bike more compact when packing it for flights and so on... Not light for sure, but to be honest I don't look at weight as much on a bike that is not that light anyway, I rather trim down on the things I carry with me which works out cheaper. If money is no issue I would go titanium. Cheers.

    A really cool video of a part I must visit one day (I live in Scotland). I never thought that kind of serious cycle could be done on a folding bike, so this is an eye=opener. My wife and I have done some cruises and often wished we had a wee bike to get about ashore. Maybe one of these (preferably two!) is the answer. I'm trying to guess the singer (around 15:00) but love her anyhow.

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  3 роки тому

      Thanks Peter, I hope you are well. Rim overheating is something I have heard but must say it has never happened to me. In Scotland it was pretty cool despite being summer. I think that problem is more when riding in extreme hot temperature and long descents but it is something I have done in the past and again I didn't notice it. I have read once that one shouldn't keep the brakes on at all times but rather use them in short bursts which is what I normally do. Take care.

    Awesome. I've watched a lot of your bike touring videos on a Brompton and am thinking of doing the same. Was wondering if I could make it my permanent touring bike, riding 125 km a day for 20 days. Would the Brompton manage that?

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  Рік тому

      Thanks a lot! It is an excellent bike that brings some advantages to a bike tour. You do lose a little bit of speed compared to a full size bike. 125km is possible but it all depends on your fitness and style of touring. I personally find the ideal day to be between 80k and 100k. If you are touring with lots of mountain climbs, the limited gears will slow you down too so you might have to consider that. Otherwise it is a comfortable bike to ride loaded and much easier to move around with buses, trains or car whenever you include some transfers within the tour. Enjoy!

      @BromptonTraveler  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks David! I did get rain here and there as it is normal in Scotland but overall I think it wasn't too bad. Few times it luckily rained only at night when I was safe in the tent. Merino wool baselayers and all the Gore tex you can get hold of is good in these climates, and can keep you damp rather than wet! It was a leisurely 12 days and the last part back to Inverness does follow the A9 in some parts but every now and then you are able to ride on cycleways ( Route 1 I believe Land's End to John o'Groats ) so it isn't too bad. Those last 3 days are not as exciting but not too bad either.

      Thanks Suneel. It was my latest trip this June. The road does get really narrow and twisty but traffic at that time was not too much and i felt they were all minding cyclists as there are quite a lot in such a popular U.K. route. I wild camp here and there ( completely allowed in Scotland) still I found campsites really good and cheap usually letting you pitch a tent for average 12 pounds with hot showers which was a bargain.

    6:30 Whoo! That wind! No wonder you walked up that one climb - it was practically vertical!
    How bad were the midges in reality? Did the midge spray work or was the headnet the only practical protection?

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  3 роки тому +7

      Yes, Bealach na Ba is well known as a very steep climb, one of the toughest in Great Britain but the gale force headwind I had that day made it hard, even when trying to push the bike up :) Midges were pretty bad a couple of times but nothing crazy. I did use Smidge spray and wore the head net when they were around. Not sure about the spray but I felt it did help. The head net is the best 5 pounds you can spend before going to Scotland in summer. They seem to love campsites and storm around your head while you pitch the tent; the head net is really useful when that happens.

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  2 роки тому +1

      The only thing you can do is trust your common sense that can judge whether a major road is too dangerous to ride. Otherwise it is for those that drive to be careful rather than you. The best we cyclists can do is make ourselves more visible with clothing, lights etc. Be a little assertive in taking your space on the road as that will slow down traffic behind you. Being afraid and riding on the threshold seems a good idea but it isn't.

    Good video, as usual. Scotland looks like a lonely sort of place, with amazingly narrow roads! Is there a reason you don't wear a helmet, or cycling gloves? I'm starting to plan a 20-day ride from Land's End to John o'Groats and you make me think that riding my Brompton might be workable. I've been wondering how to take my Surly Long Haul Trucker on the plane and get from here (Minnesota) to there and back, but the Brompton would be much easier for that!

    • @BromptonTraveler
      @BromptonTraveler  2 роки тому

      Helmet is personal choice and a risk I take as I find it really uncomfortable to wear while touring long hours every day. The North coast 500 is spectacular as I suppose are other parts of Scotland if you are open to challenging weather! Land’s End to John o’Groats seems a great plan and it is possible on a Bromton. You might have to push the bike at times as roads can get really steep in Cornwall and up north and you are limited with gears on a Brompton but if like myself you dont mind, the bike is solid and reliable. Enjoy.

It is always a surprise in a way as you never know how it will turn out in the end. I use basic software like iMovie if doing it on my Mac computer or Lumafusion when editing directly on the iPad.
