He looks perfectly sharp and flawless in a new hope, but looks abit tired and maybe aged abit in the empire strikes back. I've always thought he simply just aged abit, didn't know he had a accident and his face was altered.
Absolutely. He looked completely different. It's all about the nose. He injured his check bone too but the nose is what really changed. He went from having a nose with a fairly dominant bridge to an almost button nose. Kinda like going from a white man's nose to a black man's nose. Every time I watch Strikes Back or Return, I think to myself, it's a shame the wreck didn't happen til after the trilogy. It's not like he became an ugly man but he def looked better before the accident. After the wreck, he looked more like a frog.
@@hallucy2215 Well said. It took away character from him. Actually, even when a nose job makes a person more attractive, much of their character gets lost as a consequence. Like Jennifer Grey. Her nose job def made her prettier but it also stole much of her character & magic. Even she admits that. I know Adrian Brody understands this. He had his nose injured on a film set a while back and they said he ran to the mirror freaking out. He was worried it would change his look in some way. He knows that his big, weird nose is his calling card and a big part of what makes him original & special. That's why I always preferred girls next door over fashion models. I was around 10 years old when my parents took me to the theatre to watch Star Wars. I really liked Luke. Years later when I watched the next episode on TV, I was wondering why Luke looked totally different. As a kid I was pretty disappointed. I did not know about the accident and there was no way to find out back then. I thought he aged very quickly.
I definitely noticed the difference while watching ESB, but I think they should've shown side by side screen shots of his face from both movies to give people a clearer view of the difference.
mark hamill doesn't look much different in the 2nd comparison. he mainly looks totally different in that first example because his face was still swollen and healing in real life.
I used to think he looked like that because of the snowy place he was at. I thought it was part of the movie. And the scars were from fighting that Yeti thing lol
I thought Hamill was exceptionally handsome until I saw Empire and noticed a huge difference in his face. One simply does not age that quickly. When you look at the after pics, his philtrum (the space between his nose and lips, is almost gone with a few crooked lines. His nose is a little flatter and bent like how a broken nose looks. His cheek is a little off. But I still admire the actor and person and it was just an unfortunate accident. He himself had said in interviews months after the accident that he thought his "career was over," and in People he said his "face looked like a raspberry pie." That's obviously not good. Plastic surgeons did as good as they could do and I'm just happy he survived the accident because he is a wonderful human being and adores his fans. But whenever I rewatch Empire I can't help but think about what could have been.
It was a big difference because even after return of the Jedi a few years later he look completely different from return of the Jedi he look he was in his 40’s already and Harrison ford and Carrie Fisher still look like they were in there Star Wars days so yeah the car accident definitely changed up his look
crazy hearing people say they thought it was a new actor, now knowing i see the difference but i wouldn't have ever been able to tell you his nose changed otherwise
He doesn't look THAT different between films. The main and most noticeable difference is that his nose is a little flatter and less sharp, post-accident.
Wow I would have never guessed his face changed like that. Just thought he got older but didn’t really pay attention to it until I read a comment on UA-cam today lol
Interesting Fact: George Lucas, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford have all had car accidents that have changed them one way or another. Lucas had abandoned his dreams of being racer, while Hamill and Ford have had scars from their accidents.
So why did the press never have a video recorded interview with Hamill talking about the accident, you will only find bits and pieces of Hamill talking in different written interviews saying he was in an accident. George Lucas denies the creation of a scene to explain the injuries to his face, and that it was just part of the movie. The "Conspiracy theorist", would say someone else was badly hurt in that accident, and Star Wars was the biggest hit in the world at the time, and was set to make even more money when Empire Strikes back came out. So they did not want their star all american boy having the stain on his name. ( just a thought, I'm sure it never happen that way.......)
I can tell the difference now but it doesnt bother me, what upsets me is what he must have been going through, and I heared he had to have help getting used to seeing somebody else's face in the mirror, it makes me feel for him.
I'm not trying to sound shallow or anything but I just like mark before the accident because he seemed more humbling then. Afterwards he started playing lunatic characters and he just wasn't the boy I had a crush on when I was 13.
That was my first thought about this situation because to be honest his personality also changed after the first star wars movie he just seemed entirely different after that.

Star Wars was made in 1976. Hamill's car accident happened in January 1977. He was still recovering when the film premiered. No, we don't still love him. Mark Hamill is a dick.
What is strange is that I've read although corvette summer (CS) came out after the first star wars movie was released (now titled episode 4) it (CS) was actually filmed before star wars but shelved until after hamill became super famous. So execs decided to pull it off the shelf and release CS expecting it to make more money than originally planned. The accident which is claimed to have disfigured hammil's face while filming corvette summer happened BEFORE or while he was filming Star Wars so can't account for the difference in appearance between the first and second star wars movies released. But I did read something in the comments section that this accident happened while refilming some scenes for star wars. I'm now also reading about some other accident which happened shortly after the initial star wars release. It's claimed Hamill had two facial reconstructions. So maybe that explains it. No offense intended but hard drug use was very common and widely accepted at that time so I wouldn't be surprised if drug use accelerated his aging and perhaps also made the disfiguring effects of cosmetic/reconstructive surgery (which often manifest many years after the surgery due to aging and "scar tissue" surface) manifested sooner than they otherwise would have. Or maybe hamill really was involved in a time travel project (montauk project) as rumoured and filmed corvette summer AFTER filming star wars (despite the fact that CS was filmed BEFORE the initial star wars was filmed)?
What drugs are you on? Mark Hamill's car accident happened in January 1977. Star Wars was made in 1976. Hamill met his wife in 1977 whilst having his teeth fixed after his accident. They were dating by August 1977. Hamill was reputed to have had affairs with Vegas showgirls whilst filming Corvette Summer whilst he and his future wife were on a break. They were reunited by May or June 1978, when Hamill visited his old school with her in Japan. She fell pregnant in September 1978 and they were married in Hamill's garden in December 1978. The Empire Strikes Back started filming in about February 1979 and Hamill's eldest son, Nathan, was born in England in June 1979 whilst The Empire Strikes Back was still in production. Who said Hamill was a drug user?
@@gaynor1721 I'm merely relaying what I read about it elsewhere. Not sure where exactly. I can get that info for you someday because I have a record of that somewhere. It seems the facts about this accident vary and conflict from one source to the next. That's all I'm saying. It's like a mandela effect. Like C3PO's silver leg. Can you appreciate what I mean? There are what is called mandela effect "residues" or "residuals" proving that C3PO's leg wasn't always silver. For example, behind the scenes clips of the costume, action figures, illustrations, TV specials, commercials, etc wherein C3PO is all gold with no silver. Not to change the subject. My point is the "facts" surrounding Hamill's accident seem to be inconsistent in a similar manner. It's very strange.
He looks a bit different, but you have to admit, the surgery, especially for the time period, is superb.

Considering it was ear cartilage, It isn’t half bad
He didn’t have serious surgery. These claims are all superficial as the surgery they say happened. He has a small scarring present on his right cheek.
He certainly would have aged differently if it hadn't happened.
