Bless you, Keith, I feel like you put in extra dollops of time and love on this one! 😊 Regarding the CE mark, it’s a self-certification which means literally anyone could come up with a product idea, build it, certify it, and sell it. It’s not like the olden days of before the 2000’s where you had to go through a proper testing and certification regime (as a manufacturer you can opt for that, but it’s obviously expensive and not many of these re-badge companies will go for that- if you recall your old Elektra Beckum planer, as a German product that would have been through the Tüv-GS review - GS stands for Geprüfte Sicherheit- aka Tested Safety.). So as long as there are no injuries/claimants, the CE mark means virtually nothing. I looked into this a few years back for a product idea and it made my hair stand on end (what’s left of it) 😂

That review of the table saw was mine. I still have all the videos I sent Rutlands regarding the faults on the saw. On a positive, they refunded it with no issues andbhave published my review. I then purchased the Evo R255TBL+ and havent looked back since. Keep up the great content 👍🙂

Interesting points - so I’ve reviewed the Rutlands table saw (purchased it when it was new) and have to admit I didn’t notice the crown guard issue - but that may be because I immediately raised the riving knife when setting it up. Additionally as it’s my first table saw it was just a “my impressions of it” which in hindsight isn’t how I do my reviews nowadays and perhaps highlights my inexperience as a former all hand tool woodworker. Thanks for sharing your experience and I think I may remove my review - or at least add in a clip about the crown guard issue. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for stating that Carly is an annual subscription application - so many others have not. Great video - the back garden bricks are properly intriguing! (oh and there's definitely a future for you in musical theatre!)
Well done Mr Brown. It's good to see a UA-cam channel with calm, well-considered and measured critique actually being able to persuade a manufacturer of one of the most dangerous tools in any workshop listen and make changes. Top marks too for Rutland's positive engagement and commitment to product change/improvement. We're none of us perfect - we just need to be able to share our experiences and make the most positive use of them without it becoming a shouty slanging match which is zero help to anyone. I hope that this is a trend that will continue and grow - a genuine force for good. Thanks all.
I've bought a couple of things from rutlands in the past and won't be in future. Nothing I've bought has been without serious issues. The scariest one was with their router table, where in the middle of machining a piece, the lock on the bit height gave up and the spindle dropped into the table. Shards of plastic and bits of wood flying everywhere, nearly pulling my hand in (it was passing near the bit at the time) a ruined router bit and new underpants needed.
Did they do anything about it, assuming you contacted them? I have their R15 lift and the 2400W motor. The bearings catastrophically and suddenly failed in the motor which caused a chunk of oak to go flying, ruined the bit and used up a lifetimes swearing quota. They claim the bearings are "wear items" and refused to fix the router under warranty. They told me what the bearings were and have now ghosted me completely. I did open the motor up but you can't remove the top bearing without removing the rotor, which is pressed onto the shaft presumably in a factory jig so installing new bearings is essentially impossible. I now have a very expensive paperweight and a lift I can't use. That's just the latest of the many failures.
I left a few poor reviews on Rutland years ago and they never appeared. I check several times. They are for sure only publishing positive ones. There is not a single poorly reviewed product on their website.
Thanks Keith, good to hear from you, and excellent news that there is a new big build coming, really looking forward to that, A summer house is on my to-do list ( writing shed for Mrs C.) but on this occasion I may be buying rather than making. By coincidence I was looking at buying a "kick-step" this week, I'd been considering getting a workshop stool, but decided this would be better so good to know you agree !
Bought a few things from Rutlands, and I can tell you most of my purchases have been ok but when I’ve had any problems it’s the customer service that sucks.
I have left some good, mediocre and poor reviews of Rutlands products. And surprise, surprise it is only the good one that got published. The excuse of external review websites and customers not seeing them only damages their reputation further in my opinion. It’s actually illegal not to publish a genuine review, so it’s dodgy territory. As a result of them not publishing reviews, I am much more reluctant to purchase from them, than I would by seeing a poor review. Also, I should say that the poor products I reviewed were returned and the customer service was great, so no problem there.
As I understand it, in the UK it is morally wrong and commercially inadvisable to be seen not to post negative reviews but it is not unlawful to do so. Unless you have a citation of the law covering it ...
@@andygardiner6526 right you are, not against the law. I think I got mixed up when reading the policies of various online platforms. But also totally agree with you that it's morally wrong and commercially inadvisable. Sadly it seems Rutland's is gaining a reputation for not posting reviews.
I bought the Evolution saw after your video and I'm delighted with it. Normally a crown guard isn't a big deal. I never used it with previous saws but the Evolution one is actually decent.
I've just bought that one from Evolution and it's been delivered with the fence all dented and marked. Will call them on Monday to resolve.... Didn't even unpack the saw itself.
Love the musical creativity on show in this video. It takes balls to put yourself out there in an unfamiliar way even if it is just for a bit of a laugh and you did it well. Looking forward to the summer house series.
🤣 love the song Keith! I'm excited for the build and how you get rid of the shrubs! Will Stuart be helping you? I thoroughly enjoyed when you worked together 😁. Sometimes I have to focus to figure out who is who in his intro.
Great video Keith, I enjoyed that song it made me smile. Really good content too, I am definitely looking forward to the recycled timber build. Just to add, yesterday I needed to scrape something and my card scraper was dull so I looked back up your card scraper video. Still very helpful, and it's so interesting to see the difference in your presenting and how much more professional you have got over the years. Great job mate and thanks for your output.
The summer house sounds like a very interesting project. There's another reason to be looking forward to spring! Thanks for showing your Bisley bank of shelves. it makes my own set up suddenly seems far less extreme and almost normal 😏
The fact they are claiming they have successfully completed the tests required to CE mark their product isn't any kind of fig leaf. It's possible to notify the safety approval authorities (UKCA or VDE) that a product remains hazardous if the supplier refuses to do so.
I've left a (REALLY!) bad review of a Rutlands product which never appeared on their site. It was for their now discontinued biscuit joiner which, although very cheap, was, in my opinion, downright dangerous. I personally wouldn't touch a Rutlands power tool or machine with a ten foot pole although some of the hand tools have been OK.
Great video again thank you. Nothing you said inspires me with confidence in Rutlands so I'll be avoiding them. They need to fix the guard, not the manual. That's a dangerous quick fix.
Oh dear. You gave them ample information and opportunity to correct the dangerous part. No amount of stickers etc. makes up for the fact that the design is inherently dangerous. It absolutely does not need to be able to come into contact with the saw blade in order to function. If the design allows the part to make contact, someone will do that. They had a chance to win customers from his they dealt with this situation. But they've bungled it.
If that's a "transit position" for the riving knife, in which the saw shouldn't be used, there should be either an interlock or at least some kind of visual indicator (beyond the shards of plastic being distributed around your workshop) that it is not ready to use like that.
Hi Keith, Good advice on the crown guard on the table saw a bad illustration by Rutlands. I like the drill guide and also your new set of drawers, not so keen on the karaoke .........lol Looking forward to the summerhouse build and using reclaimed materials that will be a good saving. Back in September I used reclaimed windows in my porch and timbers only things I bought was the cladding and rain gutters, the windows were just a few cm smaller. Great video take care
I’ve had similar issues with leaving a non favourable review on Rutlands website directly. It was never published and my email asking about it was just ignored 😅
Your new red wheeled step are known in the customer service industry as an elephant's foot, just thought I'd put that out there. Excellent video as ever. Looking forward to the summer house build. Stay safe.
I design/develop websites for a living and they absolutely have control over what reviews appear on their site (what sort of a review configuration would it be if they couldn't!). They most likely have a setting built in that only shows 4 star + reviews...
got one of these saws off rutlands. couldn't wind the saw blade all the way down. there response was for ME to sand some plastic down that caused the problem......one bitten twice shy comes to mind!
Thanks for this. I would happily pay a bit more for those 3 features sorted with the table saw. At the moment it's just a no from me because of them. I'm too much of a novice to have to remember what not to do, etc. All the best🙂
Wow, and with musical number too! Looking forward the salvaged summer house and the mystery pavers (or whatever that was) project that we must wait years to know about.
MORE SINGING, PLEASE! Keith, you're such a likable, intelligent, humble, talented dude. I really love your videos. Looking forward to the new build and whatever that thing was that will still have me watching 3 years from now.
Since finding your channel i now work in a hardware store and thanks to you ali can talk with knowledge and understand what the customers are looking for
On the drill bit jig, I've been using the Big Gator MDG1000NP for years. While it lacks the bushes it does have a groove in the base for doing angled holes, or holes on things like dowels. Its not given me an issue damaging bits as yet.
Lovely little mix video to break up the formats. Also proper impressed with the presenting confidence you have now compared to the early days. Could that Keith imagine singing a ditty 😂
Regarding reading manuals, I hate to sound boring, but it really should be something you encourage people to do. It's one thing not reading a manual for a bedside table from IKEA, but for a tool that has a very realistic probability of doing irreparable bodily damage, I really can't see why anyone wouldn't.
Rutland’s occasionally sells good stuff at a reasonable price but most of the time it’s just relabelled stuff from another brand or from a random factory in China. I was looking up the dowel making jig and they have the exact same thing (just with their name on it) for £40 plus postage, compared to £12 plus postage from Amazon
Actually I don’t think they do ever have particularly good stuff at a reasonable price. I thought I’d bought a rebranded respirated visor cheaper than the original manufacturer from them but I checked my email and it was actually from Axminster. I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything from them. Whenever I’ve been looking on their website I’ve found similar products or even the exact same thing (minus the Rutland label) elsewhere for noticeably cheaper
I’ve had a negative review removed, so they do actually edit the feedback that customers give. I also ordered a Festool ROS from them, and they sent me an obsolete model instead of the latest model pictured on their site. They did give me a refund when I sent it back, but failed to refund the postage. So I don’t shop at Rutland - there are plenty of other tool suppliers, and if I want cheap Chinese stuff I can go to aliexpress.
Selling a dangerous saw, then telling you it's dangerous, does not free Rutlands from responsibility. A bit like selling a car with dodgy brakes, but telling you the brakes won't work in certain situations.
Watching this video and I was thinking.. oh a classic one with allot of tiny bits of info, which I enjoy thoroughly. Did not think it could get any better... And then you started singing! The proverbial icing on the cake.
I have had positive communication with Rutlands in the past having bought several of their tools. I got fast helpfil responses and will happily use them in the future As regards the crown guard problem. I think one would have to be as thick as two planks not to have noticed that when first using the saw. Given ttat the majority videos I see , especilly American ones, very few of them show a crown gaurd being used and some even leave out the splltter, a real no-no in my book, having experienced kick back
Great video Keith! The sandpapers section was really interesting I will have to try some of the 3m stuff and compare it to the festool blue pads. I'm not usually impressed with mesh ones, although I'm usually using it on walls/filler for decorating. Loved the song! 🎶 Have a good week!
Regarding the riving knife, they should do like for printers (my only experience), there is a piece of coloured tape on stuff that must be removed/adjusted before use, things that are in transit position. Stick a tape between the crown guard and the table, with a label attached that mention what to adjust.
Had good experience with a few Rutland tools, specifically their mini router table and a bench top bandsaw. The bandsaw arrived without the retaining circlip for the upper wheel and it was swiftly supplied.
Enjoyed this general update. Thanks for sharing. Shop space is a premium for me as well plus I park my car in the shop at night. I have to wheel things to connect to the dust a collector. It is annoying for sure. A bit of a radical idea. Would putting a hold in the cinderblock and putting one of those those type of extractors you showed outside in some sort of weather proofing box easily solve the problem?
The song..... awesome Keith! 😂 I have some similar slightly higher drawers which fit the Stanley yellow organiser inserts in. Works brilliant and wouldn't mind some more if I can find space for them!
As always great video thank you Keith not too sure about the singing 😂 but yes draw’s are good for your workshop l have made so many in my workshop all different sizes can’t wait for your summer house and to see what you have picked up 😊
Wow! Who knew i needed Keith Brown singing on a Saturday morning to brighten the day 🤩😍 . If only we can get keith and Peter Parfitt together for a jam session………
Yeah, I stopped using Rutlands a few years ago. I had a few bits including very poorly made biscuit jointer, a couple of pretty clunky bar clamps and some standard T-track and fittings. This was before Banggood arrived in earnest on the UK scene and Amazon started doing more direct from China stuff. Felt to me like Rutlands were essentially knocking out the same stuff under their branding but at a premium. No added value + mark up on low-to-ok quality = no point.
Correct, they the same with the same manufacturer's reference number but different motor and saw blade, which may or may not be significant. Thing is, where I am the Vevor saw is 150€ (one hundred and fifty euro) cheaper.
It is possible, I built my first garden shed/summerhouse at my current house entirely from salvaged materials apart from the roof covering and the screws. The bulk of the shed came from a storm damaged shed which had been blown half a mile out of the owners garden and over a field. Needless to say it was in a sorry state. I cut down and rebuilt the damaged panels, the floor and what was left of the roof, using pallet staves to make half the roof. It lasted about 8 years until weather and rot finally got to the already tired structure. My new shed was built with construction timber and osb but is entirely clad with pallet staves.
Rutlands is very hit and miss with there products. I had an issue with a sander dust extraction port and there customer services told me to use duct tape. I gave them ways to resolve the issue and they never implemented it. They never put negative comments on trust me as I’ve left many. Good luck with the summer house… are you a Yorkshire man? 🤣
I've bought a few items from Rutlands over the years and never had any problems with the products or customer service. A few years ago I bought an 18 gauge pneumatic nail gun. It developed a fault near the end of its warranty and Rutlands sent me a new upgraded model with no fuss at all. Mind you, I would never buy a budget model power tool...you get what you pay for.
😂....mate...🤦♂️ I'm intrigued by you big salvage build. Like, getting enough similar materials so it doesn't look too shanty town. Look forward to that. Thanks for the mention. Still loving that dowell jig. 👍
I think there's a tendency to only post negative views. Thus, in the interests of fairness, I would like to say I've not had a problem with Rutlands products. I've go their wind-up-lift router table base with motor, and it is a great product. Very beefy, and a game changer for me. Not had a problem. Also their cordless 18g nail gun - brilliant in every respect so far. I've also bought several hand tools - block plane, saws, router bits etc. I've no real issues with any of them (price points accepted). I also bought quite a lot of clamps from them back in 2016 (40 odd in three different designs). You've got some of those beefy green ones yourself Kieth. All of them are going strong in 2024. Not that I am a particular supporter of Rutlands. But for me, without access to a local supplier where I can look and touch, they stock lot of woodworking gear. Lastly, it seems to me they are increasing their range quite fast at the moment, and trying to establish a Rutlands brand, which looks superior in quality ( and certainly price) from when I was shopping with them circa 2016ish.
I have a Rutlands straight edge (£45), a machined square (£40) and a large triangle (£60) from them. I had to get the first straight edge replaced, it had a dent in the straight edge side so wouldn't sit flat, returning it was more of a hassle than it should have been. The replacement was also damaged but I gave up trying to get that one returned as well. Both the square and the triangle are nowhere near accurate enough for the cost, between 0.5 and 1mm off square over 400mm and 300mm. I completely avoid their own brand things now.
I’ve got a rutlands biscuit jointer that absolute rubbish but their clamps are actually pretty good. I’d never buy anything electronic from them but I reach for the cheapo rutlands clamps over my bessey ones every time
Hi Keith, I recently spoke to a Mirka rep and he said that the Ligno sanding discs are for natural timber only and are not great for man-made materials like MDF. Hope that helps.
I've bought a few things from Rutlands, some bad and some good. I've bought clamps from them which are great. A 1/4 router which is okay. A cheap nailer from them which was rubbish but they do replace broken parts quickly.
The crown guard needs a redesign as it cannot be used for narrow cuts due to the massive fixing knob and it needs softstart. I have one, it’s good for the price overall, but the lack of softstart makes the whole thing jump slightly which is undesirable on numerous fronts. It’s not dangerous but even I still brace myself for startup even though I’m expecting it.
rutlands recently accepted my affiliation for my YT channel, but told me they had no tools available to review for the rest of this year.... but they sending you tools out... 🤔🤔🤔 thanks rutlands
Ive got a few rutlands tools including the table saw. Along with the router table & motor and planer thicknesser, from what ive seen, most of the tools are the exact same tools from other brands like Clark , scheppach, skil, zippa, charnwood, lumberjack, einhell, erbauer, titan, excel , There all exactly the same tool. Not everyone can afford or needs dewalt or festool. I went for the Rutlands because of the Slight differences, for example the rutlands planer seems to have had a fence upgrade compared to the rest, Ive read the customer service is very poor. So fingers crossed i dont have to find out.. my tools get light use most weekends on small projects so hopefully theyll be ok.
Bought a few tools from Rutlands a few years back and can confirm my negative reviews never showed up. Won’t ever buy from them again however tempting the prices may be…

I left a few poor reviews on Rutland years ago and they never appeared. I check several times. They are for sure only publishing positive ones. There is not a single poorly reviewed product on their website.
Did you scroll to the very end?
@RagnBoneBrown yep! They are dishonest with their review practices
@@RagnBoneBrown I detect a wry smile
There are 2 and 3 star reviews published for some of their products with negative comments.
I agree 👍
I've just bought that one from Evolution and it's been delivered with the fence all dented and marked. Will call them on Monday to resolve.... Didn't even unpack the saw itself.
Thanks for being a voice for the consumer and thank you for your great content.
Love the musical creativity on show in this video. It takes balls to put yourself out there in an unfamiliar way even if it is just for a bit of a laugh and you did it well. Looking forward to the summer house series.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing and nice to see someone else with Charnwood kit, even though you are parting with it. 🌞
that song made me spit my coffee out... Brilliant stuff dude
Thanks! I missed you and was glad to hear from you today!
Great video again thank you. Nothing you said inspires me with confidence in Rutlands so I'll be avoiding them. They need to fix the guard, not the manual. That's a dangerous quick fix.
You’ve done Rutland’s a big help by providing that feedback. Hopefully they realise that and actually fix the problems
@@imaginitivity7853 totally agree. Completely half arsed response
If that's a "transit position" for the riving knife, in which the saw shouldn't be used, there should be either an interlock or at least some kind of visual indicator (beyond the shards of plastic being distributed around your workshop) that it is not ready to use like that.
That evolution one looks pretty decent.
Hi Keith, Good advice on the crown guard on the table saw a bad illustration by Rutlands.
I like the drill guide and also your new set of drawers, not so keen on the karaoke .........lol
Looking forward to the summerhouse build and using reclaimed materials that will be a good saving.
🎶I think they're a great idea for you🎶. I am singing this as I write. Great video with fantastic musical accompaniment. More please, Keith!
Those drawers tunred out nice!! And that song put a smile on my face and had my toes bopping along😊
I searched for Rag n Bone on Spotify but he didn’t look like you mate 😂
Fair play though, put a smile on my face
Few more tatoos 🙂
That song! Oh man, you made my day - thank you, Keith!!!
Came for the woodworking, stayed for the jazzy show tunes 🤣
MORE SINGING, PLEASE! Keith, you're such a likable, intelligent, humble, talented dude. I really love your videos. Looking forward to the new build and whatever that thing was that will still have me watching 3 years from now.
Wow thank you!! 😊
Since finding your channel i now work in a hardware store and thanks to you ali can talk with knowledge and understand what the customers are looking for
Awesome stuff, Keith! 😊
Looking forward to the build!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! You too!
On the drill bit jig, I've been using the Big Gator MDG1000NP for years. While it lacks the bushes it does have a groove in the base for doing angled holes, or holes on things like dowels. Its not given me an issue damaging bits as yet.
I too own that and its well made, and very useful indeed. Sometimes I'll fire some WD40 into the hole before sliding in the bit just incase.
Lovely little mix video to break up the formats. Also proper impressed with the presenting confidence you have now compared to the early days. Could that Keith imagine singing a ditty 😂
I’m glad I watched you video as I was about to purchase a Rutland table saw. 👍
Rutlands don't stock Festool, do they? I thought everything was their own branded stuff.
@ They used to.
Looking forward to the salvage build; that was always my favourite part of your early channel.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have had positive communication with Rutlands in the past having bought several of their tools. I got fast helpfil responses and will happily use them in the future
As regards the crown guard problem.
Thanks 👍
Regarding the riving knife, they should do like for printers (my only experience), there is a piece of coloured tape on stuff that must be removed/adjusted before use, things that are in transit position. Stick a tape between the crown guard and the table, with a label attached that mention what to adjust.
You are a great woodworker and I love watching your videos. As for the singing, well I will leave it at that.
Loved the tune. Look forward to your garden room build
That's something I did years ago on my channel at my old workshop
Out of curiosity, how well did it work and did you like it?
The song..... awesome Keith! 😂 I have some similar slightly higher drawers which fit the Stanley yellow organiser inserts in. Works brilliant and wouldn't mind some more if I can find space for them!
Can't tell you how much I love a shed build.
Great for the catch-up - can't wait to see the summer house project. Not sure about the song though!
Great update, looking forward to the summer house thingy!!
That ruthlands table saw is the same as the vevor saw. With the same issues. Great video and song, cheers!
Correct, they the same with the same manufacturer's reference number but different motor and saw blade, which may or may not be significant. Thing is, where I am the Vevor saw is 150€ (one hundred and fifty euro) cheaper.
Can't wait for the big build, prime ragnbone, as was the singing!!
Brought quite a few products from Rutlands and made a few negative comments and never seen them published, won’t use them again.
Glad to see you again and the extra set of draws look great
It is possible, I built my first garden shed/summerhouse at my current house entirely from salvaged materials apart from the roof covering and the screws.
Good stuff enjoyed that, fair play to you on building a summerhouse from salvage wood 👏
Loved the song Keith...lol. Put a smile on my face when I badly needed one. 😄 Thanks man and keep up the good work.
‘Keef’ys gone mad, hasn’t he’ 😂
Love the song.
Can’t wait for a Christmas song too!
Cheers buddy, love that dowel jig, such a great solution
A musical finale, just like morecambe and wise. Lovely stuff.
Hope you video The Garden Project Keith, have a nice day Mate !!!.
I’ve got about eight sets of Bisley drawers they’re like my guilty pleasure in the workshop. Every time I see one for sale I have to pick it up
Me too!
I just realised you can build whatever you want as long as you sing the entire commentry I'll be watching with my mouth open.
A wooden version of your workshop stool might be an interesting project.
That's a really cool idea! Thanks
Won’t ever buy from them again however tempting the prices may be…
Well done on the Rutland topic. You’ve definitely saved someone from a horrible accident. 👏🏼👏🏼
OMG, the song 😅😅
Great video, not so sure about the singing though 😂😂
I have had really rubbish experiences with Rutlands years ago, I won't go near them again.
Use low friction tape on the heaviest drawers, so its stell running on plastic, makes a difference
I always enjoy your videos, Keith, but this one had me chuckling away at the end. Nice one.
