He was a dignified black man and it’s not a loss. He “Fought a good fight and he finished his race.” He left an awesome legacy. I only wish that our young black men can follow the some of his example (behavior wise). He was an intelligent, proud, and dignified man.

I remember watching many of his movies as a child and really liking him and all his movies. At the age of 12, after watching Guess Who's coming to dinner, with my parents my mom later told me he had been the first colored actor to win an Oscar. I remember thinking and saying to myself: of course! he is an excellent actor! ... To be able to perceive his talent and excellent work in the films at the age of 12, speaks how remarkable this man was. All my life I always had a great admiration for this man. The world was blessed and fortunate to have him for 94 years. Thank you Mr. Poitier for everything! RIP.

My mother’s father was from Cat Island; my mother met him for the first time at 25. He let all of his Bahamian born children know that they had a sister in America and they have continued to welcome my mother as if she was always there. I once asked my grandfather why he left America he said “ I would rather be a poor man with dignity than a rich man without it. In America the Black man is diminished and without dignity.” My American born grandmother remembered him challenging the white overseers when no one dared. Cat Island and The Bahamas as a whole will always love and honor Sidney Poitier.

Sidney Poitier is the product of his Bahamian roots and upbringing, plain and simple.
Bahamians have NEVER viewed themselves as second classed people to anyone .......... They understand the importance of both giving and receiving respect and dignity, and that good manners and humility goes a long way.
Bahamians NEVER say "IF I CAN" ......... It's ALWAYS "WHEN I WILL" ........... That sense of confidence and determination is deeply rooted in the psyche of ALL Bahamians, which is how Sidney Poitier lived his life (there was nothing he could not conquer).
So Bahamians were never surprised about Sidney's success, and always appreciated that he never lost his Bahamian self (in his Bahamian accent that he never shunned or departed from, in his manners, in his quiet dignity, in his humility, in his confidence, in his giving respect to all and demanding the same respect in return, in his work ethic)
SIDNEY POITIER WAS A GREAT BAHAMIAN AND A GREAT MAN !

God really chose him, and that is from birth. There is always things in life that we don't understand and who is to question it. Look, he was born prematurely in the era where a preemie baby had little or no chance to live, he grew up poor with no education, yet he catapulted to become a legend. God works in mysterious ways. Rest in Peace Sidney Poitier 🙏🏽❤️

I don't know how many times I saw "To Sir, With Love" or "In the Heat of the Night" and his other films. When "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" came out, that's all people talked about in the neighborhood. He was the first black person I saw on TV playing dignified roles. I watched "Pressure Point" on TV where Poitier played a psychiatrist and it gave me terrible nightmares as a kid. I can't think of anyone in the cinematic field who's more respected in the black commmunity. May the Universe rest his soul.

So sad to lose this great man ❤️ I ALWAYS wanted to be a better person after seeing him perform or speak. He was so soft spoken but very powerful, elegant and articulate with dignity. I could only look up to him. I was a poor kid & only got to see his performances on Saturday movie night tv 📺 , after the movies left the theaters or when he was on talk shows. He seemed so different than everyone else. He was a true gentleman. I did see him on the big screen in To Sir With Love 😭 !what an inspiration to a 15 year old girl from rural nowheresville.
