Look at OkMalumKoolkat's 100K MaCassette track, it uses AmaBankbook beats from M'Du's kwaito album. I guess if M'Du released Nammer today it would be regarded has Hip-Hop and when you point out the Kwaito DNA on it you will be told you dont know Kwaito. D-Rex was producing tracks like this for kwaito too. Zola's tracks had more hip hop like beats and his delivery was more rap than kwaito. O'Da Meesta's "Wena Ubani?" has more similar beats to this. So confusing this with Kwaito is not far fetched. Unless you only listened to Arthur's tracks on kwaito meaning you really dont know the gritty kwaito other than the mainstream radio-friendly kwaito. Kwaito was a broad genre baba.

It had its time and memories and its one of the very few genres that had no overseas influence at all. Its 100% pure south africa. So for rappers to get influence from it should be encouraged rather than frowned upon. Since SA did not come up with rap unlike Kwaito, our rap will always have the similarities of overseas rap, that is not avoidable. But we need to put a south african feel to it and kwaito provides a rich collection of beats for our beatmakers to draw resemblences or sample or resuse them. Even laboKanye West are sampling R&B and older rap beats where they draw inspiration from and if Kwaito was american genre you would have heard the samples from rap coming out very often. So really to not feel some kwaito element on the bass part of beats is maybe not knowing kwaito that well. The main difference with kwaito of the likes of M'Du and the rap of nowadays is the lyrics. M'Du were not lyrical and that was the intention, the lyrics were just "hay! hey wena, sukaa, tshisaa! ngekhe ulunge ... ek se". When Zola released Umdlwebe album debates were so many about whether he was kwaito or rap because he was actually "rapping" faster than kwaito artists do. For me I think he made a bridge between the genres and connected them together.
