The original Buena Vista Social Club album was recorded for World Circuit Records over six days at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana. Released in 1997, the album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million copies and contributing to the rise in popularity of Cuban, as well as Latin American, music.
Since forming in London in the mid-1980s, World Circuit Records has made its reputation by producing some of the finest albums of the past three decades. The label’s prestigious roster includes Buena Vista Social Club and associated solo artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando ‘Cachaíto’ López), Malian blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré, Malian divas and social activists Oumou Sangaré and Fatoumata Diawara, master kora player Toumani Diabaté, the illustrious Orchestra Baobab, musical iconoclast Cheikh Lô, and Fela Kuti’s legendary drummer and co-creator of Afrobeat Tony Allen.

My grandmother had dementia and every time I played this song she was young again, she opened her eyes wide open and started to sing and remember her life in Veracruz. She also loved to listen to Agustin Lara and she remembered having serenades! I lived throughout her memories RIP.

This was played at my mother's funeral on May 11. She passed away Mother's day week. She also loved Augustine Lara! and all those wonderful boleros.

I like the fact that some singers say "porque no existe otro querer" and others say "porque existe otro querer". In the first case there are a lover and his gift, the two gardenias, that die because his/her lover doesn't love him/her back and this happens because there can't be any love but the beloved one. In the second case there's the same situation that happens because the two lovers don't love each other anymore. I find this thing incredibly charming about this masterpiece.
I have never heard that a singer sings "porque no existe otro querer. They sing "si un dia las gardenias de mi amor se mueren es por que han adivinado porque existe otro querer" which means if the gardenias of my love (the flowers he gifted her) die it will be because they have guessed that your love has betrayed me since another love interest exists. My interpretation of that is actually that he gave her the flowers to maintain while he was gone, and if they died is because she didn't care enough about them, and the only reason for that would be that she no longer loves him since she loves someone else
