  • In this video I show the process of repairing the roll-off roof at The Ocean Lake Observatory to put the observatory back in operation. I also give a tour of the observatory and the Ranch grounds where it is located. Please visit www.mdpub.com for more information.

If you need a bit more roof clearance, you can just abandon the bolts, possibly cut them off. Then shift the wheel locations enough that you can use long screws to fasten the wheel plates to the roof structure.

Time to replace that mechanical roof opener with an electric one.

Cool observatory! I suggest the 2x4s the wheels are mounted to probably dried out and shrunk along in the cross-grain axis.
You live in Florida and have a property in Wyoming? Long drive.

Yeah, about three days each way. Once this damn pandemic is over we'll be able to fly each way. It'll be a lot quicker.

Congrats on the repair Mike. The observatory and location look awesome. 1 question though, is the roof flat? It doesn't look like it has much of an angle to it which would seem to be a problem with snow build-up.

The roof has some pitch to it. It's not flat. It has survived many Wyoming winters before I bought the place. Snow load doesn't seem to be an issue for the structure. I don't know how well it would open or close with a lot of snow on it, weighing it down and clogging up the tracks. I guess we'll eventually find out.

Well Mike, what can I say. I'm impressed.
