    Which one should we use if we wanted to include an object and a living thing in one sentence? Eg. I have a printer and a cat at home. Would it be imasu or arimasu?
    The other question is this expression: "I'm not English" is "Igirisu-jin dewa arimasen." Why is it not imasen?

    If my pet just died, what do I use since it was living and moving a while ago but not anymore, in such a situation, which should I use? I think imasu should be used as the cat used to be living just a while ago, and even if it were dead for a long time, it meant a lot to me (the owner) so I'll use imasu but if I didn't like it that much I'd use arimasu right? Or am I wrong completely?

    • @YukoSensei
      @YukoSensei  5 років тому +58

      It totally depends on how the speaker (you) want to describe it. If she (your pet) just passed away a few hours ago and still laying in her basket, you can use います because you loved her so much and want to perceive that her spirit is still there. On the other hand, other people may perceive it as "her deceased body" is there and may use あります. If you made a grave for her under a tree in your backyard, you would still say "she is there under the tree" by using います even years after she passed away. So, it largely depends on how the speaker feels for the subject of existence like the example of a teddy bear I used in the lesson. Hope this helps!

      Well, but then ... if I were to use arimasu for a person, japanese people would probably correct me and then I still would have to explain (somehow) that this person died - and it would still lead to me having a mental breakdown.

    At the very end you used the "wa" particle instead of "ga" for having a dog.
    (いいえ、いません。でも、いぬはいます。)
    Is there some reason it changes because of the context?

    • @YukoSensei
      @YukoSensei  3 роки тому +19

      Yes, the particle は in this context is used as a Contrast Marker. When two things are in contrast, we tend to mark them with は. In the response, I said "No" to cats but "Yes" to dogs. So, cats and dogs are in contrast in the context. The complete response would be いいえ、ねこはいません。でも、いぬはいます and I dropped the ねこは part because it's understood in this context and it sounds more natural without it as a response. I hope this helps!

      “ Watashi wa neko wo katte imasu “
      This imasu does NOT mean “exist” that explained in this video.
      It’s TE form of the verb + imasu
      “Katte imasu 飼っています“
      Plain form of “Katte飼って” is “Kau(飼う)” it means ....keep, feed, have ,rear, raise animal in English.
