The show has a lot of potential for a sequel. I can't wait for the sequel, "/ssss/ Gridman".
Man 2018 has been great for trigger, mediocre ending aside I loved Ditf, it brought me back to anime, and Gridman just hammered home exactly why anime is so special as a medium in the first place.

I heard someone else say this but “If your villain acts like a secondary protagonist you know it’s good.”
What is " your acts" ? Doesnt make sense to me
Anti Fanboyism I meant villain!
Ahh. Thank you
Just take Invader Zim as an example. Zim is a "hero" who wants to take over the world while Dib is a secondary protagonist who happened to be a "villain" protecting humanity from invasion.
I would say so but some stories work better with pure evil or stupid fun evils. It's all about the story your trying to tell.

That final scene broke the 4th wall so much that it literally had an effect in the real world.
It feels like the anime is hinting that SSSS.Gridman is literally just a fictitious creation and Akane Shinjo is the creator of the story of SSSS.Gridman. It's like a more hardcore version of Re:Creators. 😁
...Or her mind was somehow transported to the computer world. And SSSS.Gridman is actually a continuation of the original show.
@D.A Deibertson Really? Sounds like The original Gridman was a prerequisite to watch SSSS.Gridman. Although, I don't think anyone mentioned that it was a sequel. Do we at least get an insight on why Akane acts the way she does though? 😁
@@eugenefindit well she act like that because she probably not as popular as she is in the other world which she created.
It's not necessary to watch Gridman or SuperHuman Samurai Syber Squad, to understand the anime, but it helps. There is a lot of references about the original show. Kudos to the director, writer and producer to give something for the fans, respects the source material, but it challenged the tropes of the Toku series, with a new perspective for the genre, and for the new people, also it gives a lot to talk.
It's a damn good series for itself, sequel or not (or spin-off).
She turn real. Waifu turn real. There are hope in Pandora ssss box.
The SSSS in the title turned out to mean "Special Signature to Save a Soul". Gridman's purpose was saving Akane not only from Alexis but from herself. And by proxy also save the world she created which now had individuals with a will of their own.
I would like to mention that one of the twists of the final episode was that Gridman was revealed to be the same from the original live action series all along and there's also ton of references to that series. Akane belonging to a live action world serves multiple meanings since it also ties perfectly into this series' origin. It's in the same continuity as the original.
The reveal of what the SSSS stands for and why Gridman was sent to Akane's world in the first place was so goddamn well done. I love endings to shows that make you reflect on the entire experience in a different light. As someone who has no experience with any other Gridman material, this was a really good first impression.
No, SSSS actually means "Smile, Sweet, Sister. Sadistic." XD

I found this from a forum in facebook [Theory] So why Akane's real world appearance looks like Rikka? 1. Rikka was modeled after Akane's IRL 2. Rikka is the self she hates. Which explains why Rikka lives in a junk shop like the rest of the trash. 3. Gridman choose Yuuta because while everyone else looking at Akane (ideal self), he's the only one who took interest in Rikka which represents Akane IRL (real self). 4. She made Rikka to love Akane because she couldn't love herself in real life. By the time we see a close relationship between Akane and Rikka in Gridman ED sequence, it means Akane IRL has finally learn to love herself. Simply put, Gridman is a story about a girl seeking for self-acceptance It's just an interpretation
now thats deep
beautiful
also watch the music video of gridman opening she found a friends in the end but i think like irl akane looks up to the girl the she changes into in her world maybe that girl is real because in the ending she wear the same school a uniform as her or ok her real name is rika and she wanted to.be akane
@@tenkuken7168 In voice drama 12.12 Rikka and Utsumi meet an unnamed girl who looks like Akane, but isn't, and speculate that she's the one Akane based her appearance on. That girl also seems to be a popular girl who has had several boyfriends, probably the kind of person she envied.
I see Akane more as a manipulated individual rather than a villain near the end compared to the beginning. Also glad I didn't sleep on this anime. Plus Merry Christmas
Yeah, Alexis 100% manipulated her in a lot of ways and probably twisted her even more. She's a victim more than anything and it's one of many reasons why she's so compelling and amazing.
SSSS Gridman was written by same guy who made great Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah aka GMK and that movie has Evil Godzilla who actively hates Humanity and purely evil (as the only Pure Evil Godzilla aside Shin and Earth so far).

mabye she even made how she looked like too :)
@@peynnep6483 Nope. Her looks are just like Rikka. Akane in the world she created is her ideal self yet she copied her own self to make friends with her. That's why Rikka knows everything about Akane.

@@gregsanders61 I can express my opinion in the way I like, if you dont like it you can get out of here imbecile.
Pay attention to eye colors, and who's what makes a whole lot of sense. Red eyes: "Human," yellow eyes "Gridman& related ones" (why Rikka mom has yellow eyes is not explained tho), blue eyes "created people." Rikka having hue of red suggest how close she was to Akane.
And as for Tonkawa, if you're familiar with Heisei era Ultraman series, you know damn well she won't make it thru the episode. The pouch she's wearing on her belt, whoever had that in Ultraman Nexus didn't make it either. And the fact that script writer for series is the one wrote for Ultraman Nexus series didn't raise any hope for her survival even before the start of Gridman.
I didn't know that... I have to watch Nexus at some point.
well Rikka's mom originally owns Junk, so... hmmmm..
Damn, that subtle eye color technique is surprisingly good. I haven't even watched the thing yet, but I can tell it's a -damn good character driven story.-
Edit: Actually, I'm thinking it might be a more symbolic show rather than a character driven one. It uses a lot of motifs and symbolism, with little requirement to feel real, so it might be more disconnected from the characters, allowing for more abstract pieces.
That explains Anti’s new eye
The reason Akane and Anti having red eyes is more with the fact that there designs are Shattered Glass Optimus Prime and Hot Rod. Yuta is G1 Cliffjumper one of the autobots. the rest is Shattered Glass Decepticons and Neon Genesis Students being the Bayverse Dinobots. That is right Rikka Thicc is fact the Leader of The Decepticons Megatron.
Edit: Forgot to add Rikka’s mom is also G1 Megatron sharing his classic colors.

Very good analysis! Helps one appreciate the subtle nuances of the show more.
Thank you very much! And I know right? Every time I re-examine this show, I discover something new, you can tell a lot of attention and care was put into the writing and direction.
If anyone is interested; there is a prevailing theory that Rikka is actually Akane, and Akane is a persona that the "real world" Rikka created when see created the world the story takes place in. There's is a substantial amount of evidence to back this up as well (Both character's seemingly have an interest in Yuuta, Akane ending depicted with long black hair in the "Real World", the final conversation they both had at the end, how Rikka was the only character Akane wasn't interested in until Rikka started to become closer to Yuuta, and much more that would take too long to list) It really makes sense when you think about it.
The simplest, most common - and most probable - theory though is that Akane in the series is basically her idealized self, i.e. the memorable one who everyone loves and adores. However, when she created her best friend in the dream, she modeled said friend after her IRL self, hence why Rikka resembles the IRL Akane. Note that the room in which the IRL segment takes place in clearly has an "Akane" name on one of the picture frames in the room.
That's not exactly true, and it kinda would ruin a certain aspect of Yuta. Rikka is based on Akane's real world appearance, and represents the real Akane in the computer world. Rikka is partly the whole reason the show happened, the reason being that yuta loved her not Akane. The entire world was designed so that everybody loved Akane, but yuta was the anomaly as he only loved rikka. Also Gridman took use of this as a way to re-enter the computer world
StrikeNoir105E I will point out none of the show is a dream, it just took place in the computer world of 1993 gridman
You mean both thicc and boob belong to same people..... 😱 she indeed god dess.
I would like to point out the reason why Rikka looks like real world Akane is because they had the actress that plays Rikka to do real world Akane.
@@gregsanders61 I'm well aware of that. I know I haven't done a proper job on displaying the theory, so I suggest heading over to the "Nearly On Red" channel and his video on the final episode (SSSS.Gridman Final Episode - Casual Analysis). He addresses the theory much more properly, and convinced me that the theory holds quite a bit of ground.

what is impressive about something like that?
@@Pipehiguita Normally people announce that their video is "sponsored by yadayada" right off the bat and it honestly kinda takes you out of the video for a second. Sage blended it into the commentary about Akane and I'm honestly impressed.
I love that Trigger is never afraid of having cheesy messages and also somehow manages to reach them in the most nonsensical ways possible
Honestly I fell in love with Akane. Her character is really layered, in more ways than one ;) I'm making a review video for Gridman and I keep coming back to Akane and her connection to the real world. Ep 9 was defiantly a direct parallel to her real life struggles. Also does anyone have any ideas on what to bring up in my review? I defiantly want to talk about the direction and plot.
Akane's guilt at the end, extreme guilt that might haunt her the rest of her life. This shows she was not a sociopath even though acting like one. it was her depression and not considering the people in her world real that let her kill so casually. And without Alexis, she probably would have never killed at all in the real world just stay shut in or kill herself.
I started watching this based on your reccomendation in a previous video and it has become one of my favorites of the season. Thx for exposing me to this wonderful series. 😍
Funny, I also started this show based of his recommendation, but dropped it since it's one of the worst I've seen this season. But that's just my opinion.
@@lincolnbeckett8791 what a shitty opinion 🙂
Besides the references to Eva, I honestly found a lot of thematic links between the two. Both are about characters running away from their problems rather than facing them, people who avoid the awkwardness of human connection as much as possible.

Man I loved this anime and Akane by far was my favorite character. Since this is confirmed a sequel to the original Tokusatsu Gridman I would have loved it if someone from that show showed up in here. And if it had to be anyone it'd have to be Takeshi Todo. Not only because he would be Gridman Sigma and that he appeared in Boys Invent Great Hero. But mostly because he's the one character who relates to Akane the most since he was a villain who also had no friends. I would honestly love to see the those 2 interact with each other.

Spoiler warning:
Anyone else notice Akane's passholder gift has the matrix of leadership on it?
Well, there's a lot of TF references, so it didn't came too much as a surprise, at least to me
I mean she is designed after Shattered Glass Optimus Prime so it's a no brainier. Also the brand her passholder is from is called Nova. Aka referencing SG Optimus becoming Nova Prime.
Ultraman reference is way more than any of it. They even use the Ultra Seven ending when Akane is at the door.
Everyone in the show is a freaking Transformers reference.
Akane = SG Optimus
Rikka = SG Megatron
Yuta = Cliffjumper
Utsumi = SG Sideswipe
Neon Genesis Junior High Students = Michael Bay's Dinobots
and the four fuckbois that tried to date akane but got killed were wearing Jetfire colours
thank you for making me understand this anime, i really enjoyed this.
I ain't even mad about that sponsor. So slick I couldn't help but laugh and applaud your silver tongue.
There's some irony that you pointed out how villains usually end up underdeveloped due to focus on the main cast, while this Anime has the opposite problem. The main characters are extremely dull and one-note. Especially given they implied some type of past relationship between Yuta and Rikka that never goes anywhere after it's brought up.
Interesting analysis. I personally thought Akane's story could have been executed better because I felt the resolution to her arc was just a bit rushed; like you said, her sympathetic qualities aren't really apparent until the dream episode, but at that point there are only four episodes left. Had her issues with loneliness been established sooner, I think it would have had more impact. Also, we never discover what exactly made her seek out Alexis and want her to escape into the real world. There's a lot of context missing that I feel would have made the character more complete in my eyes.
The action is great, but I felt the series as a whole just needed more coherency and focus.
I think you can imply the reasons Akane wanted to escape and used Alexis' power, especially in the finale when she starts talking about how "a big world is too much for me" or whatever, it's a severe case of social anxiety, she believes she's incapable of making friends in the real world. As for her sympathetic qualities being made apparent toward the end, I think it's made fully apparent by episode 8, which imo is a decent amount of time to start fleshing it out which they did, but even beforehand I thought they did a good job of subtly characterizing her and making you ask questions about WHY she would make this world at all and what she's actually after, which they do a good job of answering later on.
Regarding the main trio, no arguments there, although I was more okay with it because of how much they zoned in on Akane's character instead, and because even though they're not characterized nearly as well, their writing throughout is still really snappy and fun to listen to.
@@PhenomSage When dealing with issues like social anxiety though, I believe it's better to not be subtle about something like that. I feel like showing the viewer why Akane would want to escape from the real world to her own fantasy world would at least make her earlier actions of sociapathy far more understandable than her just having a god complex. You said the series had gotten somewhat stale around episodes 4 and 5, perhaps those episodes could have been used to flesh out Akane's background. Just my thoughts. I agree her arc is the centerpiece of the show, but I feel like it could have been handled better.
I don't really mind that the main trio are less characterized, so much as the series sort of set things up that never came to fruition. If Akane is the main character of the show, and the series is her arc, I don't feel like it needed to stretch itself by trying to cram something in with the main characters too.
Hey man, this is the first video I've ever seen made by you, and I just wanted to say that it's really fuckin' good. SSSS Gridman was on my radar but I wasn't sure about watching it because I'm not a very big fan of the soul-sucking, nihlistic ending I assumed would occur. Not only have you assuaged my fears that the show would be hopelessly depressing (because, in all honesty, the more I learn about the Japanese, the more it seems like they are very, very interested in dark, depressing, and oftentimes hopeless scenarios), but you offered a lot of insight into the show and it's creation. You looked beyond surface level stuff, and it was cool that you shared it.
Anyways, I subbed, and I hope too see more funny, insightful stuff from you. I bet you'll end up being one of those people I sub to and watch blow up to millions of subs in a couple months.

BABY DAN DAN!
BABY DAN DAN!
Sage that was a damn good shilling segway.
Awesone video as always phenom have a merry Xmas and hope 2019 is another great year for anime and another year of great phenom videos!

That damn amino ad transitioned too good
5:16
"Akene is basically a GUY"
Me: wait What was that? *repeats again*
"Akene is basically a GOD"
Me: PHEW
I snorted at how you smoothly introduced the sponsor. Nice stuff so far.
Great video Phenom and Happy New Year!
Thank you, and Happy New Year to you too man! Here's to a great 2019.
1:03 I choked on my water omg I'm crying
For a second I thought the title was villain or nut.
that was perhaps the smoothest transition into a sponsorship that I've ever seen, well done sir.
Love your content so much man, keep the awesome coming! Happy holidays :D
Happy holidays to you as well, I hope you had a good one! And thank you so much, this means so much. I'm going to try my best to have videos come out more frequently in 2019, sorry for how long it's been taking recently.
PhenomSage no worries, bro! Your stuff is well worth any wait :)
Now you made me want to watch this since I am really skeptical of this show since the beginning since all the people I ask whether this show is good or bad always them side tracking and turns it into a conversation about best girl in the series, which made an impression that this is another waifu bait series....
It's not only about the girls and highschool. This show has pretty consistent themes.
Actually this is an animated tokusatsu.
It's not waifu- based, that's just the fanbase doing what does best; try to ruin a decent series
she neither a villain or an mc, shes a religion
Dammit, I usually skip the sponsor parts but you played that off so well that I had to watch it.
that was honestly the best insert I've ever seen
Sounds like one of those forced monologue where it’s a taboo to haphazardly call the entire story a ludicrous lucid dream in the end. But your persuasion and excitement proves that it’s a piece of work. Thank you for making this video, I ought to check it out now.
Why is every cute girl is always psychology unstable
Stupid trope
idk but I live for it
Ceniros or *a Guy*
I miss you my guy
I miss you more, sorry for the long delay in between vids.
Lol I always loved anime villains, they usually more charismatic than the main character, they actually were the reason why I started to watch anime.
I love when they make the main character a villain! Deathnote and code geass are the best examples I can think of so I'll definitely be checking this show out this weekend
Right? Although in Code Geass' case I never really thought of Lelouch as the villain, even by the end you realize all of his deeds were for the good of the people. Light on the other hand, hahaha, he never got a redemption period.
Hope you enjoy Gridman if you check it out!
