Linus goes out of his way in his video to say that he's not the camera guy, he just buys what Ed or Brandon say is best. He's complaining from the perspective of someone who had to pay the bill.
Then why is he complaining? Get the dudes who actually know cameras to talk about it. I think that's the criticism here. To listen to a guy complain about an extremely expensive investment, who obviously wasn't involved in researching, ordering, or probably filming with it, drives me up a wall. I can't walk out to a debate with the disclaimer "I don't know anything about this subject I'm about to argue", and expect to go un criticized.
He's complaining because the accessory prices are fucking insane. I could build a beast PC for the price of that handle, or the fucking wire. A PC, FOR THE SAME PRICE, AS A FUCKING WIRE.
Which is insane since you could buy a good touch sensitive monitor for 200 or 300. He'll, an iPad has a fantastic touch display plus a powerful processor and storage, and it's 1/6 the price of that monitor.
The only way to justify that price is to include like quarter res HDR monitor with like 1 million backlight zones. Otherwise there is no reason why they couldn't have outputted to HDMI or SDI HDMI has 19 pins, that proprietary cable has 11, I don't see how they expect to charge more for a cable that does less. (Remember HDMI carries sound too) The reason he got first party accessories is because the camera is a tool that needed to work every time, and he wasn't willing to sacrifice the possibility of incompatibility or failure on a 3rd party accessory. If Corridor Crew released daily videos they would understand why this would be important.
Again I don't know how people aren't getting this. Most people who use a Red are renting it. Rarely is this equipment bought outright unless it's by bigger studios or production houses. Having a lot of proprietary options on high end equipment is a huge time saver and great failsafe. Compatibility and reliability.

Their argument about the screen, is not an argument. All the things they argue can be connected has to yet again be paid for. Red's first party accessories generally work best, so their argument that you don't have to use first party, is again, a craptastic argument. And the mini mags have not undergone much R&D whatsoever, they were not carefully selected, they are simply budget mSATA SSDs with an ID in the header.

Guys check the subtitles at 3.0 minutes. They edited out some parts to defend themselves after the Red SSD fiasco. They talk about Linus not having any credibility when they themselves don't have any and trying to hids things and not even a apology video
Red doesn't even make the red mags. They're standard sandisk SSDs that that they just tacked a proprietary connector onto so that they could charge a 10x markup fee.
You pay for the company, not the card. If your SSD gets formatted, Red will spend weeks getting every grain of information out. Sandisk will laugh in your face and say tough luck.
Wake Ransom Wake Ransom That’s real cute and all, but they don’t need to make a proprietary connector to offer that service and still charge a crapload of $$$$. They could easily offer the same SSDs w/SATA or SAS connector.
Adding to that, SanDisk did have their own data recovery services, iirc. And even if not, adding 3-4 times emergency data recovery cost to modern 1TB SSD is still half as much as a single REDmag.

With all due respect guys, just because you pay $1000+ for a proprietary card, does NOT mean it's rock solid flawless. Can't count the # of issues I've had over the years with RED Mags on shows. I've had better reliability with SxS on Arri or Sony (and hell, Sony cameras even give you a warning not to use the card once it gets to a certain # of writes), or even the days of using Compact Flash.. A high price does not mean reliability.

Their 1500$ red mags were just regular ssd with an adapter. 512gb asd would at max cost you like 60-70$ to buy in retail. Well that's because you have no experience with corporate/industry level designer products like this. This stuff is par for the course, and Linus is someone who should've deliberated more on what was necessary and what wasn't. Instead he let someone shop with his own money, and now we get an obnoxious child to say idiotic things the consumer level viewers will eat up.
I mean RED used to be the big name in film making but the quality is simply not that much better than many of the cameras blackmagic and others are putting out. There is no justification for the ssd, cable or viewer to cost as much as they do. I guarantee their ssds don't go through much more if any more, than a samsung ssd and cost 8x more. 50 dollars for a short cable is high, 200 dollars and it would have to be shielded in gold too be worth that. I think RED has become more of a status symbol. Things used to cost that much because of new tech but now it's just capitalizing on their good name
RED's main market is Hollywood studios and big-budget production houses that can EASILY afford tens of thousands of dollars worth of camera gear alone, that's why they're so expensive. They're not selling too UA-camrs...

Sam and Niko Yup, when he read out the receipt he bought two with the accessories each for over 100k bucks. That's why he was furious why he got two RED accessories which was replaced by 3rd party peripheral, so he wasted money there.

Fast forward a year and it's found that the storage is just a generic mSATA SSD in a budget line with a pin-for-pin adapter and a DRM ID to prevent people from using another SSDs. The main issue is that they're trying to discredit Linus and his points in the video while they themselves are the ignorant ones.

Yeah, they would. These cables are genuine LEMO, so the price really, *really* bites - this is coming from someone who quoted a few simpler connectors from them. It's not $200 for a cable, sure, but $100 is pretty reasonable, considering each of those connectors is somewhere around $30, plus the custom cable itself and labor.

A cable being $200 is not necessarily because it's hand made, its because it's built to class 3 standards. There's 3 basic classes electronics are built and class 3 electronics are the kind of quality you would find on the international space station.

There's plenty of videos out there probably taking apart these components but the average person doesn't know what to look for. For example conformal coat only shows up under blacklight and etc... Again idk why people are getting worked up over a camera they're not going to buy since its built for a specific use likely in a harsh environment. If it doesn't have anything to do with you then dont worry about it.
Its funny how a few years later Linus is looking like he came out on top on this one. Linus has a lot of really valid points that have only become more valid with what we've learned about Red's production process in the past few years and the proliferation of affordable HDR and/or RAW capable 6k+ cameras (Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, Kinefinity, etc.). Most of Corridor's argument's seem to be "it's made really good" or "it's made for professionals" and never truly counter what Linus is saying: If this costs so much and is meant for professionals shouldn't it just work?
They also deleted a portion of the video here, you can still see the captions for it though. They deleted the part where they defended the Red SSD. Man, with all that shit they talked about credibility just really is hysterical now.

I think that's the point they are making. For the content that linus is making, they don't need a red camera. They bought a Hollywood ready setup for UA-cam videos and complaining about the price tag.
So... you defend the storage format, which is just a repackaged off the shelf enclosed mSATA SSD with a markup that actually does fail all the time? They don't even support redundancy, which is what would actually save those shots, and not some marked up SSD. They intentionally lock out any other storage medium, because they could have just made an mSATA slot instead and tell you "you should use these ones which we tested, but you can knock yourself out if you want to use storage that you trust more". And Linus' entire point is how it's most likely all proprietary for no other reason than the markups. The cable? Could have been a standard coaxial cable. You don't need expensive shielded hand twisted cables to connect a low res touch display with a few buttons. There can be reasons why the cable is expensive, but those are invalid if it didn't have to be.

@@masqueradr i'll point out that so far red's ssd are so unreliable that pulling the whole QC excuses isn't exactly fair i'l point out that enterprises use 25$cables (cat7 cables) for datacenters, and you can definitely expect them to be reliable it's just a cable, it's to link two connections together. especially seeing that it's only for a touch screen, any somewhat robust connectors could be used. sure micro usb or mini hdmi would be a bad idea as those connectors are unreliable. but usbc, display port, even serial could probably do the job they charge 200$ because they can, nothing else also language!

If the capabilities that are needed for a pro-level product aren't available, either they compromise (for a lesser product) or make their own (which is what they did). Storage they charge thousands for, are actually worth under $50. They made proprietary connectors, so that they would be the only one's to sell it at an insane price. Looks like it's the same with the rest of the accessories. I thought they actually had an argument, but all they had is defending the product by repeating what RED advertises. The actual camera is the only thing that is worth it. The accessories are not priced reasonably. Linus had a good point when going over those accessories, as RED is making sure you only buy from them at overly inflated prices.

Also he disassembled it and watercooled it which no one did before. I guess Linus knows better HOW the red camera works on a technical site. And i doubt that, lets simplify corridor as "filmmakers", they as filmmakers would disassemble a whole red camera just to know its technical quality. A working device doesnt mean it has good quality even if you are haopy with the results. Quality is measurable. That video kinda feeld like a lost chance for corridor to get some red discounts.
And THAT is the attitude that RED rely on for their busines. You don't have to compare it to a $20 Ebay SD card. a reputable brand of SSD would be just as reliable . Small run boutique equipment like this has a HELL of a lot less testing then commercial media.

Imo the comparison between buying the brain for 50k and expecting accessories to come with it being the same as buying a 1k graphics card and expecting a monitor with it is very valid. Camera equipment is crazy expensive due to technology, reliability and quality but it still does not make up for a 250 dollar cable or off the shelf ssds for 2k. A more reasonable price wouldve been 30 dollars for the cable and maybe 100 for the ssds

Wait what? I own a RED scarlet, and I have encountered more problem with its cards than I have had with the cheap SSDs in my laptop...Rather than shoot on a $1000 card, I rather shoot on TWO ordinary SSDs in RAID 1 (basically recording 2 copies).
Well...if you own a RED you probably know that the work a Laptop does, isn't the work a RED does. Their SSD's compared to other brands are crap, yes....but you can't compare a Laptop SSD with a Cinema Camera SSD......they are made for two different things ;-)
@@danielroads6946 you do know that a red delivers over 2gb per second of data at its highest compression rate.....and that you don't blast your laptop with over 1000 watts of lights for 12 hours per day....or drive it on a truck through the desert. You can not compare the two, it's like comparing a dryer with an oven.....they heat things but you don't dry your clothing in an oven. Just like you don't save direct uncompressed Raw Red footage to a normal SSD, because the SSD will die after just a few reads and writes. Reds are expensive but they aren't targeted at normal consumers. The people who work with them know why these things are so expensive and I never had one that worked with a red or an arri or a Sony that said "let's just use the cheap cable because it isn't as expensive"

Corridor caters vids to their returning audience every week rather than outsiders. That audience comes less for what the topic of the video actually is and more to see what these guys are working on. Most of their videos have an A story and a B story
It was because they edited the video after uploading. They had a segment where they defended the outrageously expensive RED SSDs because they state that the quality and reliability makes it worth it. They cut that out after it was discovered that those "special" RED SSDs are just regular $50 SSDs made by a third-party that RED just put in a proprietary enclosure. It's like charging someone $5000 for a $50 hat because you put it in their brand of wrapping paper.

Way late and it doesn't matter at this point, but contextually as far as I'm aware, Linus was mostly just talking shit to Brandon the guy on his team that convinced him to get the camera in the first place. Part of Linus' character as a whole is that he is cheap. If he really thought it was a complete ripoff he wouldn't have bought another one, or in the most recent videos about the REDs He's taken one apart to attempt to watercool it. He's an over-the-top kind of personality and it's why some people can't watch his videos. I'll add that Linus doesn't only upload to youtube, they have their video service Floatplane they're building that doesn't have the same constraints as youtube, so they do take advantage of better quality.

I get what you're saying but from an engineering point of view there is a lot of proprietary bullshit. Yes red makes good camera's but their auxiliary products are marked up and not of better quality than everyone else's. Saying that some shots are expensive doesn't justify the huge mark-ups. If red would include insurance on their equipment for failure then it would be a different story and that could justify the price. From a technological point of view there is no reason for their products to be so expensive expect for wanting more money. Other manufactures also do extensive QA. BTW as an EMI engineer that cable is the single most bs I have ever seen.

Not bullshit. Even a tiny angled connector can cost up to 50$ if you want it very low resistance. Worked in a EM lab, these things always cost seemingly too much... but there are no cheaper alternatives for a reason.
And this is why I will be using blackmagic mini ursa cameras, small projects use 2 SD cards recording in parallel and for big projects 2 1tb ssds in parallel, then I can also convert the camera to work for broadcast with a fiber optic power backpack

Come on, this video is ridiculous. I assembled different types of cables when I was working summers during college. You can put together hundreds per day by hand. A lot of the components are overpriced.

that cable doesn't need to be that high quality, it's not going on a mission that has to last 10+ years with out human contact. a simple display port cable or hdmi cable and a usb cable for the touch/control would have been more than capable of the job and are dirt cheap enough they could have many on set in case one was to get damaged or they wanted a longer or shorter cable. i really respect everything you do and will continue to respect everything you do, but this video honestly seems like a fanboy getting upset at a video that said something negative about something they love.

That's not what they said hahaha, they said that RED will do everything they can to find out why the SSD card died or got corrupted. And it's been tested so damn hard that they will assure you it won't break during your shoot.

I think Linus was complaining mainly about the things they make you buy. Imagine a world without USB where the mouse, external drives, keyboard you bought might not work on your computer because you bought an IBM instead of HP. It was a hell before everyone started to use standards which benefited the end user. If you look at the history of digital world you'd see how much of a mess it was before things like x86, ps/2, composite video came around. In fact the only reason you can watch this video on every computer, smartphone or tv is because there are standards that most corporations follow. And companies like Apple, RED are just trying to monopolize a small market by using proprietary technologies and force you into their ecosystem.
I think it was less of complaining and more of education on CC’s part. Just calling out misinformation that might have Influenced people to not buy reds

There's no reason to invent a proprietary cable other than making people pay more. Linus gave what was effectively an unbiased review from a buyer's perspective, but these guys are completely partial to RED.
Everything you guys said is correct except for the Red Mags, all Red does is take M-SATA drives and convert them to a TE Connectivity 2129260-2 dock connector, and they use 3rd tier drives at that. A 1TB first tier drive costs $150, the QC is done by Samsung, Kingston, Micron, etc, QC that is world class. And their is no proprietary firmware on the drives, it’s a straight up scam of the highest order, they take a $100 drive, a $3 Logic less PCB, and a $25 metal case and sell it for $2900... I’d argue that people should buy the cheapest Red/Jinny Mag possible and just swap out the M-SATA drive, then you can use high end SAMSUNG Evo drives and still save $2750 per TB!

"Intense QC" lol. I don't know about the actual industry reliability rates on the red mags, but anecdotally I have not seen good things. failure to mount, ect. Hand made 11 pin custom cables.... While I have seen some expensive test equipment using custom LEMO connectors, I agree that $200 cable is luxury/pro/propriety tax. (Also those cables are unlikely to be "hand built", heck I bet they found an existing but not public layout for those connectors.) You are correct, third party bolt on's are a great option to save money over red's jacked up prices for name brand bolt ons. However Linus's point still stands that the camera has a lot of costs associated with it that don't really bear fruit, even in a professional shoot. (This is why you lease/rent equipment) You do make good points regarding compression and video editing however if there was a computer worthy of editing RED Raw files.. Linus Media group has it, they review, build, abuse, and use systems running absolute cutting edge hardware consumer/enterprise hardware all the time.

He is simply pointing out the ridiculously large amount of money for these components for this camera; in any other situation without the RED brand name stamped these products these prices would seem unreasonable. There isn't any drama though. They didn't 'attack' Linus. The Corridor guys presented a clear, reasonable argument as to why a film-making company would purchase and use such high-end, reliable gear for important projects. People are blowing this way out of proportion. As they said, there are cheaper alternatives for when you don't need it, such as for UA-cam videos. Personally, I do think spending $100,000+ on 8K cameras to film unboxing videos and tech reviews is overkill. We don't need to see all of Linus' pores or hair follicles when looking at a Core i7. And they don't need the ultra wide dynamic-range since everything is always well lit. Because Sam&Niko use the gear to its' full potential to create visual-effects and story-driven content, they have a more informed opinion of what the tech is useful for. Not just 'OMG WHY DID WE BUY THIS STUFF?!?!", which wasn't useful in the slightest.

Again I don't know how people aren't getting this. Most people who use a Red are renting it. Rarely is this equipment bought outright unless it's by bigger studios or production houses. Having a lot of proprietary options on high end equipment is a huge time saver and great failsafe. Compatibility and reliability.

I watched their copyright infringement video yesterday and same thing, 70% of it was rigging lights, and like a minute or two was about the actual video title which is why I had clicked it.

They were also completely wrong on things like the ssd, where they made it obvious they had no clue in the first place.
So all in all, they tried to make a video debunking another video, by vaguely agreeing with it and being wrong about the rest. Not a good look

They maybe explain how things "could" be how they are for a reason. Like the cable having "good solder joints" which is a difference of .1 cents to 2 cents for the entire cable. Shielding? 1 dollar for the best shielding. Maybe 5 if it's the bestest best shielding. Except it's barely shielded in reality, nor does it need to at that length, which they would have known if they had done any research. Where did the other 200 dollars go? Red's pocket. Cable itself is probably made in China too, but the assembly and sticker's made in USA to earn that sticker.
They cut the storage part, which the most people had issues with. Corridor reiterated without question what Red said about their mags, which has found to be a complete lie, which Linus subtly hinted, but Corridor apparently didn't know (if only they checked this claim). They brazed aside the fact redundancy is missing, which was Linus' main issue, because they mags were oh so reliable, except they themselves have had data loss because of these mags.
They call it "Why Linus is wrong" while in reality they were themselves wrong and didn't really dispute anything Linus said otherwise. Their argument about the cable, is wrong. They overcharge.
Their argument about the screen, is not an argument. All the things they argue can be connected has to yet again be paid for.
Red's first party accessories generally work best, so their argument that you don't have to use first party, is again, a craptastic argument.
And the mini mags have not undergone much R&D whatsoever, they were not carefully selected, they are simply budget mSATA SSDs with an ID in the header.

You clearly don’t watch the channel, so let me fill you in. They didn’t edit in “someone” making a mask to pad the run time, that’s what they do around here. They have one main point of the video with other vlogging clips or projects in-between. It’s a vlogging channel, that’s the point of a vlog, to record yourself doing an activity, especially one you do on a regular basis.
And for the whole drama thing, I agree with your point completely. But it’s been like 2 years and they haven’t done anything like it since, so it’s forgivable.

You pay for the company, not the card. If your SSD gets formatted, Red will spend weeks getting every grain of information out. Sandisk will laugh in your face and say tough luck.
Wake Ransom Wake Ransom That’s real cute and all, but they don’t need to make a proprietary connector to offer that service and still charge a crapload of $$$$. They could easily offer the same SSDs w/SATA or SAS connector.
Adding to that, SanDisk did have their own data recovery services, iirc. And even if not, adding 3-4 times emergency data recovery cost to modern 1TB SSD is still half as much as a single REDmag.

With all due respect guys, just because you pay $1000+ for a proprietary card, does NOT mean it's rock solid flawless. Can't count the # of issues I've had over the years with RED Mags on shows. I've had better reliability with SxS on Arri or Sony (and hell, Sony cameras even give you a warning not to use the card once it gets to a certain # of writes), or even the days of using Compact Flash.. A high price does not mean reliability.

their not proprietary cards, the box protecting it is to avoid competition. Its just standard consumer micron mini-sata ssds running standard firmware.

I mean RED used to be the big name in film making but the quality is simply not that much better than many of the cameras blackmagic and others are putting out. There is no justification for the ssd, cable or viewer to cost as much as they do. I guarantee their ssds don't go through much more if any more, than a samsung ssd and cost 8x more. 50 dollars for a short cable is high, 200 dollars and it would have to be shielded in gold too be worth that. I think RED has become more of a status symbol. Things used to cost that much because of new tech but now it's just capitalizing on their good name

RED's main market is Hollywood studios and big-budget production houses that can EASILY afford tens of thousands of dollars worth of camera gear alone, that's why they're so expensive. They're not selling too UA-camrs...

@@quanmly They defended Red's markup for the storage, the "mini mags", saying they were worth the $2k for 480GB, reiterating Red's claims that they did R&D (either Red's incompetent or they lied about spending millions in R&D and choosing the best storage). Fast forward a year and it's found that the storage is just a generic mSATA SSD in a budget line with a pin-for-pin adapter and a DRM ID to prevent people from using another SSDs.
The main issue is that they're trying to discredit Linus and his points in the video while they themselves are the ignorant ones.
Corridor Crew, why act so scummy? A simple, "sorry, we made a mistake" would have been much nicer.

Yeah, they would. These cables are genuine LEMO, so the price really, *really* bites - this is coming from someone who quoted a few simpler connectors from them.
It's not $200 for a cable, sure, but $100 is pretty reasonable, considering each of those connectors is somewhere around $30, plus the custom cable itself and labor.

A cable being $200 is not necessarily because it's hand made, its because it's built to class 3 standards. There's 3 basic classes electronics are built and class 3 electronics are the kind of quality you would find on the international space station.

There's plenty of videos out there probably taking apart these components but the average person doesn't know what to look for. For example conformal coat only shows up under blacklight and etc... Again idk why people are getting worked up over a camera they're not going to buy since its built for a specific use likely in a harsh environment. If it doesn't have anything to do with you then dont worry about it.

Its funny how a few years later Linus is looking like he came out on top on this one. Linus has a lot of really valid points that have only become more valid with what we've learned about Red's production process in the past few years and the proliferation of affordable HDR and/or RAW capable 6k+ cameras (Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, Kinefinity, etc.). Most of Corridor's argument's seem to be "it's made really good" or "it's made for professionals" and never truly counter what Linus is saying: If this costs so much and is meant for professionals shouldn't it just work?
They also deleted a portion of the video here, you can still see the captions for it though. They deleted the part where they defended the Red SSD. Man, with all that shit they talked about credibility just really is hysterical now.
And this year, The Creator movie was made using a like 5k overall camera setup

And Linus' entire point is how it's most likely all proprietary for no other reason than the markups. The cable? Could have been a standard coaxial cable. You don't need expensive shielded hand twisted cables to connect a low res touch display with a few buttons. There can be reasons why the cable is expensive, but those are invalid if it didn't have to be.

Storage they charge thousands for, are actually worth under $50. They made proprietary connectors, so that they would be the only one's to sell it at an insane price. Looks like it's the same with the rest of the accessories. I thought they actually had an argument, but all they had is defending the product by repeating what RED advertises. The actual camera is the only thing that is worth it. The accessories are not priced reasonably. Linus had a good point when going over those accessories, as RED is making sure you only buy from them at overly inflated prices.

Imo the comparison between buying the brain for 50k and expecting accessories to come with it being the same as buying a 1k graphics card and expecting a monitor with it is very valid. Camera equipment is crazy expensive due to technology, reliability and quality but it still does not make up for a 250 dollar cable or off the shelf ssds for 2k. A more reasonable price wouldve been 30 dollars for the cable and maybe 100 for the ssds

Wait what? I own a RED scarlet, and I have encountered more problem with its cards than I have had with the cheap SSDs in my laptop...Rather than shoot on a $1000 card, I rather shoot on TWO ordinary SSDs in RAID 1 (basically recording 2 copies).

Just like you don't save direct uncompressed Raw Red footage to a normal SSD, because the SSD will die after just a few reads and writes.

Corridor caters vids to their returning audience every week rather than outsiders. That audience comes less for what the topic of the video actually is and more to see what these guys are working on. Most of their videos have an A story and a B story
It was because they edited the video after uploading. They had a segment where they defended the outrageously expensive RED SSDs because they state that the quality and reliability makes it worth it. They cut that out after it was discovered that those "special" RED SSDs are just regular $50 SSDs made by a third-party that RED just put in a proprietary enclosure. It's like charging someone $5000 for a $50 hat because you put it in their brand of wrapping paper.

Way late and it doesn't matter at this point, but contextually as far as I'm aware, Linus was mostly just talking shit to Brandon the guy on his team that convinced him to get the camera in the first place. Part of Linus' character as a whole is that he is cheap. If he really thought it was a complete ripoff he wouldn't have bought another one, or in the most recent videos about the REDs He's taken one apart to attempt to watercool it. He's an over-the-top kind of personality and it's why some people can't watch his videos.
I'll add that Linus doesn't only upload to youtube, they have their video service Floatplane they're building that doesn't have the same constraints as youtube, so they do take advantage of better quality.

I get what you're saying but from an engineering point of view there is a lot of proprietary bullshit. Yes red makes good camera's but their auxiliary products are marked up and not of better quality than everyone else's. Saying that some shots are expensive doesn't justify the huge mark-ups. If red would include insurance on their equipment for failure then it would be a different story and that could justify the price. From a technological point of view there is no reason for their products to be so expensive expect for wanting more money. Other manufactures also do extensive QA. BTW as an EMI engineer that cable is the single most bs I have ever seen.

that cable doesn't need to be that high quality, it's not going on a mission that has to last 10+ years with out human contact. a simple display port cable or hdmi cable and a usb cable for the touch/control would have been more than capable of the job and are dirt cheap enough they could have many on set in case one was to get damaged or they wanted a longer or shorter cable. i really respect everything you do and will continue to respect everything you do, but this video honestly seems like a fanboy getting upset at a video that said something negative about something they love.

@@Azathoth43 if you can zoom on a face that takes 1/8th of the screen and have it show in high res, that's where high resolutions shine. You don't plan on having people watch your video at the highest resolutions, you want it to look good no matter how you edit and compress it
Linus is 100% right that Red is overcharging on every single accessory for that camera and you guys are just getting defensive. They sell you a $150 SSD for $2000 and put it in a red case. A cable is not worth $200. They charge that because they can, even if it's a massive markup.

That's not what they said hahaha, they said that RED will do everything they can to find out why the SSD card died or got corrupted. And it's been tested so damn hard that they will assure you it won't break during your shoot.
Yoeri Kurvers You can do that at any data recovery service, why pay the price premium? The SSDs in the mags aren't even top of the line either so again you aren't really getting what you pay for.
They are saying that Red will recover the data off the failed drive so you don't need to reshoot.
I think Linus was complaining mainly about the things they make you buy. Imagine a world without USB where the mouse, external drives, keyboard you bought might not work on your computer because you bought an IBM instead of HP. It was a hell before everyone started to use standards which benefited the end user. If you look at the history of digital world you'd see how much of a mess it was before things like x86, ps/2, composite video came around. In fact the only reason you can watch this video on every computer, smartphone or tv is because there are standards that most corporations follow. And companies like Apple, RED are just trying to monopolize a small market by using proprietary technologies and force you into their ecosystem.

There's no reason to invent a proprietary cable other than making people pay more. Linus gave what was effectively an unbiased review from a buyer's perspective, but these guys are completely partial to RED.

Everything you guys said is correct except for the Red Mags, all Red does is take M-SATA drives and convert them to a TE Connectivity
2129260-2 dock connector, and they use 3rd tier drives at that. A 1TB first tier drive costs $150, the QC is done by Samsung, Kingston, Micron, etc, QC that is world class. And their is no proprietary firmware on the drives, it’s a straight up scam of the highest order, they take a $100 drive, a $3 Logic less PCB, and a $25 metal case and sell it for $2900... I’d argue that people should buy the cheapest Red/Jinny Mag possible and just swap out the M-SATA drive, then you can use high end SAMSUNG Evo drives and still save $2750 per TB!

Hand made 11 pin custom cables.... While I have seen some expensive test equipment using custom LEMO connectors, I agree that $200 cable is luxury/pro/propriety tax. (Also those cables are unlikely to be "hand built", heck I bet they found an existing but not public layout for those connectors.)
You are correct, third party bolt on's are a great option to save money over red's jacked up prices for name brand bolt ons. However Linus's point still stands that the camera has a lot of costs associated with it that don't really bear fruit, even in a professional shoot. (This is why you lease/rent equipment)
You do make good points regarding compression and video editing however if there was a computer worthy of editing RED Raw files.. Linus Media group has it, they review, build, abuse, and use systems running absolute cutting edge hardware consumer/enterprise hardware all the time.

HDMI has 19 pins, that proprietary cable has 11, I don't see how they expect to charge more for a cable that does less. (Remember HDMI carries sound too)
The reason he got first party accessories is because the camera is a tool that needed to work every time, and he wasn't willing to sacrifice the possibility of incompatibility or failure on a 3rd party accessory. If Corridor Crew released daily videos they would understand why this would be important.

I could literally buy an entire computer, complete with 4 Quadro RTX cards, a Xeon Platinum whatever-the-best-one-is, and a 16K display for less than the camera.
Even if it wasn't an over-exaggerated video for the sake of views. Linus' reaction was posed more as an outsider. His camera lead (Brandon) chose the items needed, and I believe this was Linus' first time looking at the specific breakdown of parts.
I wouldn't expect Linus to know the specifics of RED hardware over his camera staff.

Harry101UK he's not reviewing the quality of of the product or the use cases for it. He is simply pointing out the ridiculously large amount of money for these components for this camera; in any other situation without the RED brand name stamped these products these prices would seem unreasonable. The fact that all these guys did was purely defend RED while toting that they are using third party add ons, because it's "unnecessary" to purchase RED add ons.

There isn't any drama though. They didn't 'attack' Linus. The Corridor guys presented a clear, reasonable argument as to why a film-making company would purchase and use such high-end, reliable gear for important projects. People are blowing this way out of proportion. As they said, there are cheaper alternatives for when you don't need it, such as for UA-cam videos.
Personally, I do think spending $100,000+ on 8K cameras to film unboxing videos and tech reviews is overkill. We don't need to see all of Linus' pores or hair follicles when looking at a Core i7. And they don't need the ultra wide dynamic-range since everything is always well lit. Because Sam&Niko use the gear to its' full potential to create visual-effects and story-driven content, they have a more informed opinion of what the tech is useful for. Not just 'OMG WHY DID WE BUY THIS STUFF?!?!", which wasn't useful in the slightest.
