Before I watched the video I thought: why would you compare a $50 camera to a $50000 camera. Because the $50000 camera has to be better (and it is of course). But actually it was pretty interesting to see the theory behind the cameras. thanks Niko!

@@fandyfirdaus8631 Well, the RED isn't for general consumers. It's for filmmakers. It shoots in 8K at 60fps. That's why it's so expensive. It ain't for you. It's not bullshit, it's just how it works with specialist equipment. Not sure if you're into computers, but look at Nvidias Quadro cards. They're about as good for gaming as their top tier gaming card, but it's very expensive. It's not meant for gaming! It's a workstation GPU for businesses. It has way more memory than you could ever use for gaming, and the type of memory is different etc. It just boils down to this. If you run a business and you want the best of the best, you're going to pay for it. They charge so much money because they can.

I think at the $500 mark we start getting pretty good results (eg Sony nex 7)… it’s a massive jump in performance between $50 and $500 so there should probably be an in between point.

I don't think any computer in 1997 would really capable of editing anything that is 1080p just because it would be running a single core at like 100 - 300mhz meaning even the camcorder would bottleneck it, I don't even think you could have smooth video playback either of anything 1080p or above
I'd love to see a video like this where you do $50 camcorder vs Smartphone (Sam's Google Pixel has a really nice camera). It'd be interesting to see how they compare to each other.

This is literally the best camera comparrsion I have ever seen on youtube. Testing the extremes instead of just normal footage that doesnt look extremly different. Good job guys!

You should do iPhone / samsung phone cameras vs real ones
The comparison is actually very similar. Both compress to H264 or similar codecs, and both have an image that breaks down if you try to manipulate it. The thing with your phone camera is, it has a VERY powerful computer attached, so it can run software that can deal with compression better. The down side is, the phone's camera sensor and lens are tiny, which reduces filmic DOF as well as making them really shitty for low light.

A lot of the fans have the complaint that some of the titles are click-baity and the video is underwhelming or that there is a lot of silliness or fluff in the vlogs here. Can we agree that this one was really top-notch though? Great blend between behind the scenes learning and practical applications along with the silly and entertaining bits about Sam poisoning his friends with wasabi. Of course, it can be hard to put out well balanced content like this every other day but we can at least acknowledge and celebrate the great ones. Love this channel, keep it up Team Corridor.

What you didn't compare was how they stack up from a production angle. For example: you probably don't want to dangle a $50,000 camera over the side of a building! Then again, I've seen what Gavin Free does with his Phantom, so maybe you do?

Having just graduated from a two year course studying creative media, working with cameras and filming all the time this was a nice video to watch. and to some degree it taught me a few bits that were somewhat more in-depth to my current knowledge. Props to you guys tho for making this. It's nice to see you take time to explain to people what stuff is and how it works, its always interesting to see :) look forward to more in the future!

I believe products like RED camera is not something they get discounted, since they also sell to very legit buisnesses, their market aim isn't the general public or your average indie-camera worker and so they don't really earn much by giving them stuff or discounts just for advertising stuff. That's why you see them getting equipment from companies that have way more affordable products that your "average" joe could buy if they're intrested in that type of stuff. Also doing stuff for advertising purposes is in a way, spending your money, you're making a trade of resources.
Dingleberry Sauce They made a video when they first bought their Scarlet, saying that they bought it after saving up for years. I think RED sometimes lets RED owners upgrade for cheaper, though.

THANK YOU for this video. This is my new go to video for anyone that does not understand camera technology. It is very hard to explain to New People or to Clients this stuff. You hear stuff like 'My Phone Shoots 4K' and then 'Why can't you use that and I can save on that fancy camera you want to use'. Also it is cool to know that a $50 camera ain't horrible. Gives me some ideas for possible 3rd and backup cameras.

while all this info is interesting, what about us laymen who don't really care about LUTs or dynamic range or compression, and just want to shoot simple, non-janky footage? If I have a channel where I show off let's plays of board games for example, and I want my footage to look professional like Geek and Sundry's, what do I need to know?

Hey dude! All the factors we explained in this video are exactly what you should look for - even on a super simplified level. If you don't want to get into anything technical then all you can really do is leave it to your eyes and what you think looks good. Basic things I personally would look for: dynamic range, resolution, and how it handles color.
Knowing how compression works and exposure/etc is a big part of whether or not your footage is going to look "janky."

TheOriginalGayman Cameras are geared for certain markets. Consumer - Enthusiast - Professional. If you are an enthusiast spending a few thousand on a camera can get you what you want (hence the popularity of cameras like the Sony a7 series and the GH4). Obviously spending 50,000 on a camera is not the right choice for an enthusiast but spending a few hundred is a bit of a low-ball.

Does anyone know when they got the 1DX MK2? I missed out on the last few vlogs and was surprised to see it!
I don't remember exactly when, but I believe they got it about 6 months ago from youtube(could be wrong, haven't seen that video in a while). They did an update where they had to give back the 80d but were able to keep using the 1DX MK2.
We've been using it for a little over a year now

That is actually super useful, I do a bunch of live streaming so can’t do extensive grading afterwards so it’s good to know that the differences aren’t huge for that case.

This is one of my favorite videos, as it really packed in a lot of really cool info. All the hard cuts to eating spicy snacks was pretty jarring though.

I had someone at work buy that exact camcorder to use as a 2nd camera on some stuff we had to shoot. It was OK for what we needed it for, but it had a feature that I never thought I'd see on a camcorder - you could not record while it was connected to power! It could only record on battery, and it was a tiny, useless little battery too. Great feature!!
