    Billy Powell started out as a Roadie for Skynyrd, one day Ronnie heard him playing Firebird on the piano ( the song was originally recorded on an earlier album without the piano, and Ronnie didn't know that Billy was classically trained on the piano, after he heard him playing, he's like " shit man we got to have this guy"

    i always thought the original recording of Free bird - with the organ track - sounded like such a dirge. When i first heard the live version (Knebworth video I think) it was a revelation - the piano makes such a difference - it turns it into a celebratory song. It is a joy to listen to this for the first time as a pure piano track

    I had been wondering where the piano segments that appeared in the Rock Band 3 version of this song came from, since you definitely can’t hear it from the usual studio versions or the ones used in Guitar Hero (Smash Hits or Warriors of Rock)
    It’s entirely possible Harmonix had this track from whatever multitracks they were provided and just readded it in when there was no organ or mellotron playing.

    I recently came across a forum post questioning the legitimacy of this track. While I would agree that this isn't the exact track from the original album version, I do believe that this is Billy Powell playing. This track is probably ripped from one of the rock band games, (as are basically all tracks on UA-cam, for those who don't know) and since there's barely any audible piano on the album version, I believe they had him record a track for it at some point. If you listen closely, you can hear a voice that sounds exactly like his at 0:05 laughing and then saying "you ought to erase that".

    • @campbellboy14
      @campbellboy14  8 років тому +7

      This is from the original 16 track multitrack from the song and this version is the one on the album, yes this track is buried on the final mix, but you can briefly hear the piano playing at the beginning.

    • @RandomPerson56789
      @RandomPerson56789 8 років тому +1

      Well if you don't mind my asking, where did you get this?? It's just hard to believe that it's the original from the album version due to the fact that there's no bleedthrough of any of the other tracks.

    • @RandomPerson56789
      @RandomPerson56789 8 років тому +1

      Also, in my original comment when I said "there's barely any audible piano" I wasn't trying to say that there wasn't any piano on the album version, just that you can barely hear it.

    • @campbellboy14
      @campbellboy14  8 років тому +6

      A guy posted an extensive list of multitracks on reddit and that happened to be one of them, but you can get it other places as well like Lite Records. It isn't uncommon for the original multitracks of a song to leak, especially ones from the analogue days since they transfer them to digital and someone will see it and leak it. Songs from artists such as Queen, The Beatles, Marvin Gaye and many more have been leaked in this fashion as well. Although it is true most of the time it's from Rockband and Guitar Hero, but a lot of digitised studio tapes leak as well. There may not be any bleed on this track because it was either recorded first or is an overdub. Also I was agreeing with you that the piano is barely audible in the final mix, I was just pointing out that you can hear it fairly clearly for a brief moment at the beginning. It starts of with organ and acoustic guitar then you hear the piano fade in and what you hear being played would correlate with roughly 0:15 of this video. Also the "you ought to erase that" part you mention in your initial comment wouldn't be featured in the track if it were from rockband since they tend to edit out studio chatter like that.
