I took piano lessons for 3 1/2 years when I was a kid. I hated it because my parents wouldn't let me ride my motorcycle until I practiced at least an hour on the piano every day. That was the first effect. The second was I learned how to hotwire my bike rather quickly. Necessity is a mother right? Now that I'm old and grey I sometimes wish I'd stuck with my practicing. I still love the piano and the beautiful sounds it makes. This song is intriguing due to its sort of vibrato quick succession of key strikes in certain areas. The whole reason I sought out this video was I wanted to hear the piano part without the drums, guitars and vocals, to assess the complexity of the keyboard section. It did not disappoint. All in all it's a great song and a rather more complex keyboard than it, at first, appears to be. Damn you Sharif, just let the kids play.

This is definitely transposable... the tricky part is the intro where two pianos are playing at the same time... though I suppose you could arrange it to play it on one piano. Thanks!
Absolutely. The great thing about music and instruments is that while there is endless theory, there are only so many possible notes and chords to work with so that one with experience and a good ear could easily teach themselves to play this with this isolated track. I have done so myself and have raised all the eyebrows at Guitar Center when I sit down on a set of keys.
This clearly shows one major piece of the Clash recipe that was lost when Topper was fired by Joe. You take talent of this caliber away from any band, and it changes everything. They were never the same again live without Topper. And definitely never the same in the studio without his style and ability. Mick knew it. Bernie and Joe blew it. It’s that simple.
He had become an addict. Instead of taking some time off to get him fixed, they sacked him and replaced him. They had been going non stop for 5 years or so by this time and needed a break anyway. Their manager Bernie was a source of conflict within the group.
Thanks for posting this. I actually had no idea that there was an overdub of the piano on that intro hook. You can make it out when the riff transitions into the chords for the verses and the piano is playing that awesome octave-blues style trill to fade out. It would be difficult to play, considering the octave-blues trill and the vamped chords are both played in the same octave on the piano. He may have let that raga drop, but it was dropped smoothly with soul. (You can also hear some additional piano overdubbing on the other choruses, too.) Cheers!
Probably the way the song was tracked. I think they only had like 8 tracks on a board back then to fit in every instrument and had to utilize every channel to capture the sounds

First of all it's non-profit (at least on my end) since I don't monetise any of these videos, secondly it would fall under educational since the reason I post these is to show some of the layers in a song to people and to help those who prefer to learn the parts by ear themselves and to be able to play those parts closer to the originals.

I always turn the treble up to listen to the "tingly notes".. like chic on piano (age 14)
The pentatonics from the 80s. I had to come to this because the song came on the radio today
It’s the most important part of the song other than the bass.

Written by Topper, one of the best drummers ever, and not bad on piano it seems.

Multi-instrumentalist is how Joe Strummer described Topper.More than just a drummer.
I want this on loop while people are being seated during my funeral
I laughed way too hard at this

I believe you mean syncopation by the "vibrato quick succession of key strikes"
Tribute to the greatness of Topper Headon.
Topper wrote 80% of the song. He did the bass, drums, percussion and piano by himself as the rest of the band was late coming into the studio.
@@jaggass And he didn’t even know it was a song until he heard it on the radio!
Topper plays both the piano, the drums, the percussion and the bass on this song.
Amazing to hear this isolated ☺
Yeaaaah🤘🤘
Best piano track on Earth
The Clash are better than I always wanted to admit
Why wouldn’t you admit, mr st james
Never noticed the little triplet type things he does all these years hearing the album track.
A punk band makes a disco song with jazzy piano chords and protest lyrics. Genius
This is what made me like this song when I first heard it. Planning to learn and cover it soon.
how did it go?
Sup man just wanna check in ya, you can do it! I'd like to hear your rendition!
Someone sack that smart arse drummer. Fuck, what a talent.

Fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
Why is there random drums at around 2:40?
Zachary Morin Probably to free up tracks on the mixing desk they bounced that percussion part into the piano track.

Are the bongos from Mustapha Dance? Sounds oddly familiar, and if so that is just awesome.
They're from the same version of the song that Mustapha Dance is from.
Is there any tutorials on how to play this
Sounds like a 2 piano overdub. Nice riff though.
I was thinking that myself, on the intro, more than one player. Good all the same.

Where is the full sheet music to this?
Anybody know who plays the piano on the song?

Topper Headon wrote it and played piano, bass, & drums on his own alone in studio. Other guys added small touches later. Genius :)
