Self taught snowboarder for the last 3 years and was just riding heel edge switch for 100% of the time. This year I really wanted to start carving and getting comfortable on my toe edge. Went this past weekend after watching this video and proud to say I’ve made huge improvements! Thank you for this awesome video, Michael 🏂🙏
@@TonHil why bs story? I did the same. Some people can't afford to go snowboarding every season, or only once or twice each season. For me 3 years of snowboarding would be 4-6 sessions of snowboarding in total. Not much time to learn new things when being on your own.
When I realised that pelvic movement (hump or dump) is an essential key to snowboarding because it gives weight to the edges and what it's all about, I transitioned from begginer to intermediate. Btw Malcolm you rock my friend. Next winter, if Alpe d' Huez is the ski resort I choose for vacations, I would like to meet you in person. Cheers
Great video! Definitely good to check your fundamentals. I’ll be making a mental checklist of everything you mentioned next time I’m on the Mountain! Keep up the great videos! It’s much appreciated.
Thanks for the video! I'm so much more confident at higher speeds because with my improved posture, I can now do quicker edge changes too! And for the first time, I went an entire day without catching a single edge.
This is the video I needed! Now that I’ve been riding and carving faster, some of my turns get sketchy and I slide out. Especially on those icy mornings. Thanks for the tips!
You explain really well, thank you for that! Never had someone that explained the technique to me. I really wish I could go snowboarding and try it all out
Great video lesson. After a while of riding and watched this video, now I know my posture is pretty bad. Thats why its hard for me to carve especially on toe edge.
This video is fantastic! Some details here that have easily escaped me in a quest for better carving technique, but with limited ability to hit the mountain regularly with a young family. Hips forward on the toe edge, very well explained.
Thanks for Another great video! You are becoming one of my favorite UA-camr’s, your explanations are always very clear. I can’t wait to go and practice the “lever leg” and need to pay more attention to my hip, I struggle with my toe turns, I do them, but they are not pretty! 😆 I tried to practice today, but it was too icy so I left, I knew that if I fell in that hard packed snow, it would have been pretty painful!
So far the best explanation of snowboarding technique I've seen on the internet, I just wanted to add something from my experience. I rode a downhill snowboard, which is ridden in rigid ski boots, which does not allow you to bend your legs in the soles. I rode in such a way that I had to transfer the center of gravity of the body beyond the edge of the toe or heel, which actually means that the angle of inclination of the snowboard to the center of gravity of the body is the essential one. Actually, the edge of the snowboard into which I make a turn is closer to the center of gravity than the outer edge. Translated in the translator.
I'm brand-new to snowboarding and this video has given me so much insight into why I've been toppling backwards on heelside turns. I'll definitely be prioritizing posture the next time I go!
Update: The posture made a HUGE difference. My season is probably coming to an end with spring on the way, but I am thrilled to crush it for all of next year.
i went for snowboarding 2 times this season and got wrecked.I was doing everything wrong with noone to teach me the basics. For the 3rd time(which was today) i prepared for like a week or so watching your videos.Today i can say i really enjoyed every single bit of it. Thank you malcolm!

Hi Malcolm, I have watched a few of your videos now and I must say they are excellent. I started Snowboarding somewhat later in life (mid 40’s) and have tried to get on the slopes twice a year since getting the bug. I have progressed to being an ‘ok’ boarder but I am not the fittest person and struggle with lower back problem. This makes keeping my hips forward very difficult (and a tad painful), I do ok, but it would be great if you have any suggestions or hacks that will help me progress even with this obvious fault.... P.S We were supposed to be going to the Alps in Jan 2022 but the news is not looking good. Are you hearing anything in France if they will review the restrictions? Tks Graham
Hey Graham, yeah things are not looking good, I can't see much changing anytime soon unfortunately. As for the back issues I've had my problems but thankfully I'm OK now, every case is different though so I can't say what might work for you, but alot of yoga vids and stretching helped me!
I was looking for your videos on my subscribe list and didn’t find you so I resubscribed sorry I must of had a user error recently! I am going to Northstar Ski Resort today at Truckee, CA my second official day of riding! Your vids are greatly informative and useful! Keep them rolling Malcolm!
Ah man I'm so jealous, resorts here in france are completely shut down due to the virus. Hence why I haven't been able to produce many tutorials recently... however I can still hike up so I'm trying to get get some stuff filmed, it just takes alot longer!
Helpful video, thnx! But the question that stayed unexplained for me is how posture will change in different riding conditions, like bumpy terrain or speeding up on a slope? How to load heel side edge in these dimensions and stay stable? You will need to make your mass center lower and your posture will change to a posture of hunched dog, because in this position is more easier to load heel side edge and tilt the board.
Hey Malcom, really got a lot out of watching all your videos. Huge props. I have a request for something I have not seen from any UA-cam snowboarding channel and was hoping you could do a lesson video. I’m very confident skating and have been practicing a lot on the hill. I can link skidded turns quite easily but don’t have a good grasp on making clean single foot carve turns. There’s a lot of content on beginner skating tips but none targeted at the advanced level. Would be awesome if you’d consider making something for us. Cheers and keep up the good work!
Thanks Kevin, that's a great idea and it'll go in my book for new videos for next season. I was gutted that this winter was cut short as I was planning on making lots more tutorials, but I now have loads of new ideas and cant wait to get them made next winter!
Great and clear explanations indeed! A question, what to do with the sore muscle and tendons just above the ankle, outside on front foot…? Any suggestions to the posture/binding settings to overcome this?
Beginner/Intermediate and I have been watching all your videos which are great and very informative especially for a refresher BUT one thing I dont see you mention is Binding Angles/Stance - I ride mainly the piste as I like trying to carve, goofy footed and have a -6 +18 binding angle that ive used in the past. There lots of info on UA-cam concerning angles depending on what riding style you prefer park, free ride, carving etc - do you have any advice ? Ive also just come back from Andorra after last riding 8yrs ago (I'm now 64yrs old) and found my posture not as strong and knees not as flexible - can you recommend any exercises for an older gent to strengthen these ?
Hi Malcom, just want to say that im loving your videos.. Subscribed and learnt loads already. Im pretty much a self taught boarder with a couple of seasons under my belt so its really refreshing to see what ive been doing wrong all this time.. So I broke my leg really badly two years ago, (non displaced fracture of the tibia) and still have lots of problems with it especially when wearing any type of high top boots. The last season i did in 2015 i wore soft nitro ventures that didnt really suit my riding style but they were bloody comfy. With my injury tho i now envisage theyll cause problems on the bottom of the tibia when pressure is exerted on the strap of the binding and when the ankle moves so... I thought id need stiffer boots to overcome the pain problem so ive just bought a pair of badarse Adidas acerra's which are mega comfy and stiff as hell (prob a bit too stiff but my leg feels great in them) I havent ridden anything except the carpet in my bedroom yet but im realising not being able to bend my knees is totally effecting my stance and im unable to keep my shoulders in line with my board if i try to crouch if you get me? Is this just what its like with stiff boots or is there anything you could advise me doing? Riding tips for stiffer style boots? Do some bloody yoga cause i havent ridden in 5 years?! Hope alls well bud. Barney
thank you malcom! very nice, clear, concise instruction ! i feel like i began to understand the movement today! i think moving my hips forward for toe side is somewhat of a challenge but i think i am beginning to get it. however when i move my hips forward i almost feel like i am standing a bit too tall. it seems when i sink my knees my hips move back. should i worry about being 'too tall' with my hips forward on toe side?
Nice, it's probably worth checking out my latest video axtually, it's basically this but with a drill that sorts it out for you, and hopefully that'll explain the toe side issue too! ua-cam.com/video/8lbRCTfZlTw/v-deo.html
Hey Malcolm! I love your channel and all of your videos. Thanks to you i learned how to snowboard but i still have a problem with my posture and i was wondering if you can give me a tip how to fix it. When i ride my toe edge i think i got decent posture and i have real nice thin line behind me, but when i switch to heel edge and i push my hips back i still feel I'm leaning forward with my shoulders what causes my board to be unstable. If i try lean backwards it just feels like I'm gonna fall back 😁 please help me out.
Maybe start off not really sinking down low, as you might be doing it too much, just stay relatively tall and practice just leaning your whole body laterally into the heelside turn. Then as you get the feeling of trusting leaning back, then gradually sink down into a lower position. Also putting some forward lean on your highbacls might help, or your bindings might not be well centered between toes and heels, make sure you middle of your foot is in the middle of the board!
One thing I don't understand in this video. When you say over your edge, do you mean directly over you edge (spine line hits the edge), on the inside of the snowboard (spine line crosses the edge towards the snowboard center) over the edge or outside snowboard (spine line hits the snow outside the snowboard) over the edge?
Hey I've got a question, keeping that leaning posture seems crazy hard on your abs and knees. Is that something you just have to get used to, or does it feel more natural once you're actually riding?
Thanks Malcolm! Great and very important tip, base one. Didn't pay much attention when started, and its (heel edge) correction now realy annoying and not easy at all...
I viewed most od beginner and some advanced videos but still I can't traverse slope on a heel edge (toe is ok). I am having problems pointing and holding the board at angle acros the slope. The problem is my back foot moving to much out and its rotating my board so I am skidding into a direction where I want to go which is very frustrating. I tried leaning forward, pushing forward from back leg, sit more, but nothing helps. Shoulders pointing in direction where I want but still same problem. What I am not doing is pushing my shins into boots while on heel edge and some of the guides say I should do it + usual heel edge posture as that improves grip on the edge. What I am not doing ok? I am riding 15° and -6° stance. I am thinking of moving back leg to +6 so I can't push it much and avoid unwanted breaking but I guess it's a workaround and not a fix in my riding.
Hmmm, sorry to hear you're not having much luck, honestly it is pretty difficult to say without seeing you ride. But it should be a pretty easy fix with any half decent instructor, so whilst these youtube videos are hopefully helpful, I would always recommend a real instructor if they're not quite getting you to where you want to be!
@@malcolmmoore I had an hour of instructions, this is my 5th day on snowboard :), but coming from kiteboarding background where all your weight is focused on back leg maybe that muscle memory is making a problem for me. Btw -12 on back foot should loosen pressure on back foor on heel side?
It's more about where you have the weight at what part of the turn. If you're being lazy 50 50 weight distribution will work fine, but you'll get more power at the end of your turn if you start shifting your weight towards the back foot. If the snow is really trippy I might put around 80% of my weight to the back foot through the latter part of the turn!
Anyone else finding it so hard to get your hips forward enough on the toe side carve? Even while thinking of these tips and putting the board on the toe edge at the top of the turn, I am still skidding turns a lot. In this video he is almost falling forward and leaning so far into the toe side carve. Maybe it takes working the board to get it to turn sharper earlier in the turn to give you something to lean against?
Try out this video, it briefly goes over posture again, but also covers the movement you make at the edge change which should help you get into it! ua-cam.com/video/jjEb2irooN8/v-deo.html
Awesome I absolutely will. I have watched most of your videos a few times, but I keep gaining more from them. Do you have any merch /stickers or PayPal so I can support your channel? I have learned so much from you. Hope to get a proper lesson if I find myself in France one day. Thanks a lot!
Ah thanks Mike, I dont have anything set up like that yet, I've been looking into it but without the lifts running this winter I felt like my videos won't always be guaranteed each week for instance, so I might end up letting people down. But next season i will probably have something going on like that! In the meantime i just appreciate the views, likes, and comments! 👍
On the toe edge turn, u kept saying you have a line from your tailbone over your toe edge. This doesnt make sense, and when u were riding it didnt seem like it either
If a straight line went through your shoulders and out of the tailbone, wouldnt u have to lean extremely far back in order for that line also to hit the snow over the toe edge
@@urospiljevic5427 not really, it's only the boards width you have to move your hips back and forth across the board. @@malcolmmoore I had an hour of instructions, this is my 5th day on snowboard :), but coming from kiteboarding background where all your weight is focused on back leg maybe that muscle memory is making a problem for me. Btw -12 on back foot should loosen pressure on back foor on heel side?
When carving, do you want to have your weight evenly distributed between the back and front or is it more like 60% front and 40% back?
It's more about where you have the weight at what part of the turn. If you're being lazy 50 50 weight distribution will work fine, but you'll get more power at the end of your turn if you start shifting your weight towards the back foot. If the snow is really trippy I might put around 80% of my weight to the back foot through the latter part of the turn!
@@malcolmmoore thank you !
could somebody name music track3.44 please? cant find it
My thighs burn up fast (lactic acid), am I bending my knees too much?
It's hard to say without seeing you, but possibly, or you might just need to train them up a bit!

What doesn't make sense about it?
If a straight line went through your shoulders and out of the tailbone, wouldnt u have to lean extremely far back in order for that line also to hit the snow over the toe edge
@@urospiljevic5427 not really, it's only the boards width you have to move your hips back and forth across the board. This link is for the NZ snowboard manual, it's free, and goes into way more detail into these things. What I'm going over here is a beginner posture, a high performance stance can look a little different, but still follows the same basic principles.

Always curious Malcom, what type of work you do at home, considering you live there in the Alps ?
I'm a snowboard instructor in alpe d'Huez 😊😊
