    I always make my pupils to go straight down in direct descent when is very flat (often near the chair). It's scary for them at first because they are used to use always an edge, which gives them safety. But they have to learn to go straight with completely flat board. I always tell them, "at first you will notice that the board makes little micro turns by itself, but don't try to correct them, don't force it, keep your body in basic stance, your feet completely flat, and look where you want to go. The board will correct itself those little moves and you will go straight". At first of course I help them with my hands, but at the 3d run they can do it by their own. To me, it always works. Then, when they loose the fear for higher speeds at flats, is when they start with more open turns in flat areas. I always tell them "enjoy it, enjoy the speed!", and you can see the smile in their faces. So satisfying as an instructor.
    I will recommend this channel to all my clients. This is the best I have seen so far.

    Thanks for the video! My instructor yesterday was telling me to keep the board flat, and I thought I should keep it on a little bit of an edge because I feel the board gets unpredictable when flat and I usually catch my heel edge, and those falls hurt 😢, even with crash-pants on. I am so sore today Lol. The woman you were teaching to did great, I get nervous when I catch speed (when newbie our speed is turtle pace for you) and try to slow down right away, and in those flatish sections its not a good idea. I have a lot of work to do, but I need a few days to recover Lol

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  4 роки тому +3

      Take it easy! If the slope is perfectly flat you can have the board flat but it is still quite tricky. If there is the even the slightest tilt in the slope then your board will start to follow that. Therefore you have much more control by keeping it a little on edge, which is good especially when travelling at high speeds!

      Someone told me when you're on the flat, know what edge you're on even though you're not on it. It's like a little mental trick. When you catch an unexpected bump then you find you're straight into that edge rather than getting kicked off balance and going for a fall. One bit of advice that's stuck with me.

    Just discovered your videos and this is the second one I'm seeing. I'm considering myself a beginner as well(this season will be my 4th on a board) but, not in the way your pupil is a beginner. My learning board for two years was a stifness 8 camber board. I often ask myself why I'm seeing so many people do so much skidded turns. On a full camber stiff board, you can't do skidded turns...as you will "die" for sure. 😁 But, not doing skidded turns will help you(I think) progress much-much faster as you are forced to learn the correct way of turning a snowboard. Because, it is either doing a correct turn or catching and edge and eat snow....and, after a while, you'll get tired of eating snow and start turning correctly. It seems like a more spartan way but, at least you don't wander **for years** through beginner-intermediate-advance levels. I know people who ride 5-10-15 days a year on a snowboard for more than 10 years now and they still do skidded turns. I really do believe that most of the people would progress faster if the board manufactures wouldn't keep pampering them with soft, flat-rocker, lifted edges type of boards. What do you guys think?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  3 роки тому

      yeah 6 of one half a dozen of the other as we say! Helping people learn faster is definitely a good thing, but then making the transition back to cambered boards is important too!

    Great tutorial. I'll be helping out a couple of beginner snowboarders on my next trip so I think I'll do this with them. I know I tend to just tuck and gun it flat (where it's safe to do so) on slopes like this until I have enough momentum to then put in some big carves but that's not really helpful advice for beginners. Great content as always.

    I thinks this is essential for every snowboarder even beginners because you always will find flat areas, most of the time at end of slope before lifts or connecting slopes, and it when those areas are narrow it even more crucial. Going straight with your board flat is dangerous especially if there is icy as your boars slides around a lot and you can easly lose it and catch an edge. I learned this the hard way, braking my wrist.

      @malcolmmoore  4 роки тому +1

      @@wouterjansen5670 ah I see! I'll definitely be making a video on that next year as I've had a few other people asking. If it's not very steep ideally you want to use the same technique of just rocking edge to edge, if you don't stay on either edge for too long you can still travel in a relatively straight line. However it is good to start practicing actually riding a completely flat base too, once you get used to this and becoming aware of how to change from flat base to edge and back again then everything will become alot easier. You can also learn to speed check whereby you separate your upper and lower body to push the board around into a quick skid to slow yourself down if needed!

    • @malcolmmoore

      I have a few ideas, and actually next video will be on a simple movement to help with this, but it is likely down to posture, if you are able to get your posture in the right place in the right part of the turn then you'll be able to switch between toes, heels, and flat base much better. The video below is a good start but I'll explain it in more detail in m next tutorial. Should be out next week, but might take a little longer whilst I wait on the sun to come out!
