- Ep. 134 1/2 BONUS: A MOSAIC GIFT OF ART!
or... How I used a shower door to make a piece of art.
Welcome to my bonus video!
I'm making a custom piece of "Art" as a Christmas gift for my son. I am going to paint a substrate in the style of Spring Fever, only with paint and cover it in tempered glass from an old shower door.
1:05 Starting with a primed 12"x22" piece of MDF, I begin by painting a base layer that is lighter at the top and more turquoise at the bottom. Once that layer is on, I use different colors of paint to add little swipes of color. I use gray, light blue, dark blue, green, dark green, army green, pink, magenta, purple, bright green and light green (and more!)
3:34 Once that is thoroughly dry, I start gluing on pieces of tempered glass from the old shower door using Weldbond as my adhesive. Whenever there is an island of glass that is clumped together, I use a tool to tap it apart and gently separate the pieces. After a few hours, I finish for the night and get about 1/3 of the way done.
4:55 It is the next day and the Weldbond has had a chance to dry on the first part. I keep adding glass to the next section.
5:37 It is the next day again. I talk about the weird tempered glass because the pieces are rather large that I have. I suspect the good pieces are at the bottom of my bin. Sometimes I can cut them cleanly and they don't shatter. So I have been using the smaller pieces and gluing them on one at a time when I can't find an island to fit.
6:32 I tackle the last part and work upside down so I can reach it better. The process is rather like piecing a puzzle together and it is rather meditative and enjoyable.
TIP: I apply the adhesive lightly as I want it to dry quickly (overnight) so I can grout it before Christmas!
9:07 I start grouting with Laticrete Spectralock I premixed grout in natural gray.
9:45 I KNOCKED OUT A PIECE WHILE GROUTING! I fixed it with E-6000. I also clean the excess grout off the edges so I can paint them later.
10:32 I do the first wash on the grout, which is light and in a circular motion.
10:54 I am removing the final haze with a microfiber cloth. It looks so sparkly in the sunlight!
11:50 I paint the grout with a range of green and blue acrylic paint. Then I wipe of the paint and take a final look! I hope he likes it! I love how it turned out! I am definitely making more of these in the future! Also: I'm very happy to finally use some of the tempered glass from our old shower door.
13:40 I show the edges that are painted.
That's Putting It Together: Bonus edition! Thanks for watching. See you next time!

I am blown away with the concept of the under painting and the tempered glass over- what a great piece. I’m sure it is appreciated
The idea is truly amazing..
If you can get your hands on tempered glass, it's something anyone can do!
I'm sure that your son gonna love it. It's so gorgeous and shiny... Thanks for your sharing! I'll make it in my favourite colors... That's awesome.
YES! You can totally customize it how you like! The hardest part might be getting your hands on the tempered glass...
@@mazzonimosaics8222 Yes, that is the hardest part in the whole process, but you still nail it.
What a great way to repurpose a shower door. Thanks for the video.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for sharing this fabulous process.
No problem! I'm hoping to make more soon!

That is absolutely beautiful! To have such a gift and being able to show his children and grandchildren how it was made. Bravo to you! Loved the technique too.
You are so kind
I’ve always loved the look of tempered glass, but wow! Just wow!
I know, right? It's so sparkly I just love it!
I love it! I wasn't sure about the grout, but by the time you painted it, it was a nice finishing touch. 💚💙❤
Thank you! 😊 I ended up not making it quite as contrasting as I originally envisioned. It's a bit more cohesive and less jarring this way.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 It turned out really subtle and beautiful!!
Amazing, amazing, simply amazing! Your kid is very lucky. Thank you for all you give to us.
So nice of you. Thanks for watching!
Wow! Beautiful! Lucky kid! 😊♥️
You are so kind
Gorgeous piece!!! My favorite color combo is pinks, purples, and greens. I am so 🥰🥰🥰. Thanks Julie.
Lol. I love blues and greens right now. I want to make another one with deep blues and smoky grays!
@@mazzonimosaics8222 Please do. I'd love to see it.
Wow ! this is wonderful.
Thank you very much!
It was just the other day I was commenting on the other Julie's (Weilbacher) post featuring her son that it's our children who make us whole 😌. In fact I would call this your Best as it oozes with your love for your son 😍
Thank you Rupa! I was hoping it didn't ooze "experimentation" for my son!
I love using tempered glass in mosaics. This piece turned out awesome, totally love it, fabulous work. ❤
I've used it here and there. This is the first abstract art piece I've done. I did something more crafty in this video: ua-cam.com/video/AIgDTUMNLxE/v-deo.html
Very beautiful!
Thank you very much!
This is just amazing! Did your son like it? If not, you can always post it to me! Best wishes for the new year. Can’t wait to see what you do next.

Oh Julie! That is absolutely gorgeous!! One of my all time favorites!! Spectacular shine!! What a wonderful gift!! What did your son have to say?
He liked it and was thankful!
Love it ❤️
Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Your talent is astounding! I love this beautiful piece of art! I truly think it is such a treasure to behold. Thank you for sharing your talent with us! Happy New Year!💕💕💕
Thank you so much 😊 Happy New Year to you too!
Well that was fun! Tempered glass is harder to work with than it looks! I'm surprised you didn't get any cuts! Thank you for sharing the process, I'm really surprised how fast the weldbond dried clear!
❤
I applied that Weldbond pretty sparingly. Those little areas were starting to dry by the time I got to the last piece. Probably why that piece came off when I was grouting!
It turned out lovely. Sure hope your son will enjoy it. Very interesting technique. 💖💖🎶🎶
Thank you! I hope he does too!
Great work, Julie!
And Happy New Year!🎄🎅🥂🎉
Thank you! You too! 🍾🎇
I’m doing one and 😮you were not kidding it’s fun but whew 😥 it takes a while and 2.5lbs of glass may not be enough 😂
Right? Like a puzzle!
Happy new year!!
Same to you! 🎈🌇🎇🍾
Wow - this is absolutely gorgeous Julie! Hope your son loved it!
Thanks so much. He does!
I love it too! Happy New Year Julie :)
Wow! so interesting. I have never seen this done before, it looks fabulous xxx
So glad you liked it! Cheers!
Absolutely breath taking work!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
What an amazing piece of art! I absolutely love it!!
Thank you so much! Cheers!
You are an absolute Genius, how very beautiful, your son better love this! Best wishes for the new year!
Thank you! You too!
Absolutely beautiful art x
Thanks so much 😊
What an interesting process and awesome outcome! You don’t do any nipping to make pieces fit, right?
Sometimes I did. Occasionally a piece would shatter when I nipped it, but for the most part it was easy to shape if needed.
I loved this art but wasn’t sure if the process. Why did you paint over the grout? Why didn’t you just tint the grout before using it?
I wanted much more color variation and control than tinting the grout allows for.
This is so nifty. Now where do I get the tempered glass😅
Mine was from a shower door we had replaced. Check with glass replacement companies. Sometimes glass shelving is tempered. Car windows too, although sometimes they are tinted.
That is really cool ❤I love it. 2 questions, I’m a Mac girl do you think that glue would work? Welbond drives me nuts w/ drying time and paint at the end, how long do you have to leave it? Is it just paint and wipe off when you are done or do you need to wait? It Does look so so fun to do!! I love love love when I can combine paint in my mosaics, so excited to try this. Thank you so much for sharing your creative process with us 🙏❤
MAC glue should work well with the clear glass. I basically painted it on and then wiped it off the glass at the end.
Love your videos, not so much volume of music.
Good to know! I have the volume at 85%, but I've been wondering if it was still too loud. I'll try turning it down another notch and hopefully it will be better.
❤️💗💖 the acrylic paint at the end is going to stain the grout? And you just wipe it off the glass?
Yes and yes. I think it more than stains it. It covers it completely as long as the paint is not watered down. This type of grout takes the paint rather well.
That process is soooo cool! Where do you get tempered glass when you don't have an old shower door? Thank you Julie for showing us this project. I love it!! ❤
Good question! I think if you can locate a contractor that works with tempered glass doors you might have a good source. Some car windows and shelves are good sources as well. It always has a label marking it tempered. Be careful because it is sometimes tinted. I think the thinner glass is easier to work with and it is lighter weight as well.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 Thank you Julie! I'll start looking for it! ❤
Could you use glass from a picture frame to a similar effect?
Picture frame glass is quite thin and not tempered. Tempered glass shatters into the bits I'm using in this project. Although I did have some larger shards that I didn't use.
Beautiful work!! Can you tell me what the name of the song is that's playing and the artist? Thank you!
Sorry, I do not remember. All the music is through a subscription to Epidemic Sound.
Can this be hung outside on a covered patio?
No. It really needs to be an inside piece because of the substrate.
Beautiful, What kind of glue you use for Glass?
Thank you! I used Weldbond.
question, can you tint the Spectralock one grouts?
I'm not sure. It says it is available in all 40 LATICRETE colors, 12 SPECTRALOCK DAZZLE and glow-in-the-dark grout options. The data sheet says NOT to mix anything in it. cdn.laticrete.com/~/media/product-documents/product-data-sheets/ds-36589.ashx
You can maybe experiment with interior wall art a bit as it is not the typical application that has to withstand harsh conditions.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 thank you, I might also call them. I never used it, hard to find around here and expensive.
I was wondering ….did you let the first layer of paint dry before applying all the yummy colors? Than you so much in advance.
Yes, correct!
