  • This vlog has interesting facts and statistics on low iron deficiency.
    Dr Sandy is incredibly knowledgeable on Iron and works with The Iron Clinic as well as being a trainee surgeon.
    This is my last of the four vlogs on low ferritin, until my updates on how I'm getting along since the iron infusion.
    If you have any of the symptons I describe please go to your GP and ask for a Full Blood Count including...
    - Ferritin
    - Trans ferritin saturation
    - Serum Iron
    It is worth getting your B12 checked aswell.
    Ask for a print out of these results. Send them to Dr Caitlyn Scott by email with my name in the subject and a list of your symptons to info@theironclinic.co.uk
    Lots of love and thank you for your continued support.

    I had iron deficiency most of my adult life and didn't know that was the problem even though I had about 50 symptoms. Hair thinning from the age of 14 and brittle nails. Tachycardia and pots by the age of 15. At 22 my hair began to thin worse and took on a dry, cotton candy texture. Continual depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks. Unrelenting fatigue. Constant brain fog. Flat thinking and apathy, low mood. Foods never tasted normal. Sometimes I felt ravenous and made something and was not able to hold that hunger I was confused all the time. I wasn't able to hold focus well and became absent minded and couldn't get excited about normal things I'd be flat as a pancake emotionally because I couldn't hold a thought process for long enough. I'd crave starchy food or burnt food but suddenly avoidant of sugar. Constant headache and feeling faint. Occasional gasping. Irritable and upset all the time, felt like taking my own life on a daily basis. Skin took on a dry appearance and began flaking especially on my face and constantly on my lips, itching all over. Itchy scalp. Itching I pulled out my eyebrows and lashes. Hair became thinner and excessive split ends and then the hairline started shedding and receding. Clumps of hair all over the house. Joint and muscle pain. Nails started looking tatty at the ends. Extreme fatigue and no stamina, dizzy and faint. Began getting heart problems and bladder issues, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and chronic insomnia. Bloating and abnormal weight. Not being able to move hands and feet very well. Low neutrophils and severe acne outbreaks and scarring. Then gasping, tachycardia, collapsing. Low physical stamina, burning tongue and smooth shiny appearance, burning feet and constant leg cramps. Emotional distress. Low mood and crying. Skin took on a pale tone and then yellowed. I was so apathetic I didn't leave my bed, couldn't think and struggling to breathe and confused and upset. Even getting up to go and get an iron tablet was too much. Bruising all over for years on my legs and my hands looked as of they'd been crushed. The cognitive problems were for me worse than the chest pain they were more scary. Derealization and spaced out, not being able to tolerate normal things so when dealing with people I'd normally care about it was minimal and I had no energy for anything. This caused me anxiety. I was too weak to shout for many years and when I was walking I had to instead walk right over to someone to get their attention. Very little facial expressions or outward shows of emotion because I was befuddled and trying to grasp basic information. Began full on fainting and when I checked ferritin I was told pretty much 9 was near to normal. So another 6 months where i felt terrible. Such physical weakness I couldn't make it to the GP to do a blood test. Couldn't even walk to the car because of my chest pain and shortness of breath. I was deeply upset and disorientated, fainting and no longer tolerant.
    18 years I had all this and only now addressing the iron deficiency
    Fatigue is excessive, like being hit by a lorry

    After 3 ER visits and looking mildly crazy, no one figured out that my ferritin level was rock bottom at 8. They prescribed me anti anxiety and anti depression pills. After giving them a speech that I’m not depressed and “something is missing,” they looked at me as if I’m crazy. Crying to my doctor, I ended up with ferritin of 8, along with low calcium and low magnesium. Now, eating meat daily and taking a supplement every other day.

      One other thing to mention is I quit eating grains- wheat, bread, pasta, sweets... my daughters bday came and I allowed myself to eat a slice of pizza and cake. Boy, did I regret it! My stomach refused to digest the food or pills/ supplements. 3 days later, still suffering. Check to see if you may be celiac Or have gluten intolerance. That alone can screw up your digestion of food and medications/ supplements alike. I hope this helps you. So glad i found your channel/videos. I have had issues for months with anxiety, panic attacks, high pulse, chest pain, dizziness, headaches and many more symptoms. I had a baby 6 months ago and during my pregnancy i ended up in A&E a lot due to high pulse, breathlessness and chest pain. No one could work out why, i was just diagnosed with sinus tachycardia & anxiety. During pregnancy my iron levels were always just above 11 and i was told this was normal and i wouldnt be given iron tablets unless it was below 10.5. After having my baby my anxiety & panic attacks got worse and i ended up with shortness of breath. I got blood tests done and was given iron tablets as was told my iron was a bit low. Ive recently seen my results and my levels went from 21 to 11 in a few weeks. And at 11 I was anaemic. Im now annoyed this was never looked at.... all they kept checking was my thyroid and kept saying that was normal. They left my iron levels at 11 for month until i became anaemic.

    Ferritin level 14 here. GP completely dismissed it today, used the words 'health anxiety' and told me to eat a balanced diet. I am mortified. Been taking self-prescribed ferrus sulfate for 2 weeks, my dizziness and nausea have practically gone and my running has almost gone back to normal. I'm very familiar with low iron as I've struggled with it all of my adult life. At a loss for what to do. I'm moving GP and continuing to self prescribe in the meantime because I couldn't continue feeling so poorly. Thanks for your content. I feel like my concerns are valid.

      Problem is, unless you get a GP that has studied this and knows the levels, then most will dismiss. You just need to read the comments on my vlogs. You really need to be referred to a haematologist.

      My ferritin was 0 due to heavy bleeding. I got it up to 34 in 22 days. I did take 30mg ion at breakfast, lunch and dinner. My breakfast included 4 cups of a horrible smoothie with all berries, spinach, kale, beets, 1 raw egg, 1 piece of raw liver. I bought the best quality ingredients I could find. My 3 meals contained nothing but cooked vegetables and red meat or cows liver. I know it’s hard to eat like that, but I was desperate to get better. Some versions of the smoothie could be making raw liver shots, and drink the smoothie alone. Hope it helps you.

    Had me tested again this year and saturation is the same but ferritin is now 30. I have so many symptoms and no other reason. She said to start an iron supplement and my primary doctor said “nope yu are fine”.

    Thanks for this video, very validating!! I have a ton of symptoms and my ferritin on meds is 20- 50 with 81 mg of oral p/day and no meds ferritin is 10-20 - all around still feel like poo. Iron is 61. I’m having the sat% and binding done tomorrow. 7 year journey of major fatigue I’m going through here. Where is this Dr based? In UK at the iron clinic?

    Thanks Sally. what a sad commentary on our health system that we get information on important thing off YT!. It is true that many Doctors do not listen. I had really low (didn't know it at the time) iron count.. 6.5 dc/l and collapsed. Drs at the hospital kept me in for 10 days of testing Nil by mouth ( without food) looking for surgical answers (mostly very uncomfortable procedures) to what they were convinced was internal bleeding. Constantly being asked if a I had been passing blood and my constantly protesting 'not at all'.. after the last round of investigations the Mr at the hospital came to me and said in a very terse tone.. 'I'll be annoyed if this is diet related'. Sent me home weighing 6st 9lbs with iron tablet that only took, after two weeks, my count to 7. My test of my lack of fitness was that I could only push my (heavy) petrol mower for about 20 seconds before literally collapsing on the grass, gasping. The Mr wanted more thorough investigations but i protested. I asked if i could try changing my diet first. He reluctantly agreed.. I went home and researched anaemia and diet.. bread/wheat (not gluten) kept coming up as an intolerance that closes down the stomach Villi. So I thought the worst thing i could do was to cut it out for a few weeks. after a strict 4 weeks I was 9st 4lbs with tight fitting clothing and could mow the whole lawn in one go!.. count was 11.5. The Mr I saw said in an irritated voice - it was 'better but not good enough'. I never went back again. I'm now still hovering around 10st and can still do the same work.

    When we found out my daughter had iron deficiency at 4 a few months ago, we were shocked! Prior to that, she was constantly complaining about fatigue, ache and pain, and the worst was depression. We did not know it had something to do with ferritin. After nearly 3 months, her level went up to 13 which is just right at the normal low range. She still suffers unexplained mood swings now and then. Is anyone out there has the same issue even your ferritin is in normal low range?

      13 for ferritin is not a normal range. I believe and I'm not medically trained a child's levels are similar to an adults. You need to find a specialist in this or write info@theironclinic.co.uk

    The blood tests are:
    - serum iron
    - ferritin
    - transferrin (transferrin saturation can be calculated either by lab or by patient)
    Also useful tests mentioned by the doctor are folate and B12.
    So it's NOT trans ferritin but transferrin, a protein that moves iron throughout the body.

I’ve always had some weird relationship with my MCV, MCH and ferritin since my teens and early twenties I’m now 28 and thinking where has my hair gone lol!

    My ferritin has been high but iron has been low in the blood. Next April will be 4 years off work from my mysterious health issues. I believe anemia might be to blame. Going through all my paperwork leaves me baffled on how they could overlook something like this. I think I’m very close to solving this mystery and hopefully getting my life back. I’m a male in Canada and seen several specialists that can’t figure it out. The biggest flaw with the healthcare system is the wide ranges on blood work. Example: If the range is 11-30 and you are around 11-13 they think you are fine. I just found out that my grandfather and mother both had pernicious anemia and my sister was recently told she has low iron. This is going to be a busy week!🙂

    • @SallyJacksTVMum
      @SallyJacksTVMum  3 роки тому

      Please check your b12 and folate. Also your trans ferritin saturation as you may have ferritin but it may not be being transported.

    Question, I have had iron deficiency for as long as I can remember my levels have never been over 18 since I was young I'm 46 now, so about 30+ years of severe iron deficiency. I recently found a DR. who is at a clinic that does Iron Infusions, and I had my first one done in October. Due to me not having anemia I do not qualify for Iron Infusions through the hospital. I went and paid for my iron infusion cause I know I absolutely need it my ferritin level at that time was 12, Iron Saturation 0.09, TIBC 66, and Iron at 6. After the iron infusion I had some pretty horrible joint pain and felt pretty gross but, after about 2 weeks I did feel a bit better. I then started to feel really bad and noticed that my urine was smelling funny and was darker than normal. I went back to the Dr. beginning of December because he was away on holidays and had blood work done now my ferritin is even lower at 6. I'm not sure why the level crashed so hard after the iron infusion is that normal for that to happen when you have been low for so long? I just had my second infusion and I am experiencing less joint pain and nausea but, I still have the weird smelling darker urine (infusion was on the 5th). I have taken iron tablets for so long now that as soon as I take one now to try and help my levels I get sick with gastritis (I get gastritis whenever I take iron now no matter what kind). I have takin liquid, heme, desiccated liver tablets from New, Zealand, FeraMax, Palafer, Proferrin among others and take Folate and all of them make me sick. I'm beginning to wonder if I don't have a genetic issue or something. I have in the last year become covered in Petechiae on my trunk and chest and they are now starting to go down my arms (most of the spots will get lighter only to multiply). The Dr. doesn't seem to think these are anything to worry about since my CBC is normal and blood counts are low normal I do get IM vitamin B12 and take folate to help my body make more red blood cells I figure it can't hurt. My Platelets though are always higher and sit around 340 and up. It would be awesome if you had any insight as to what's occurring because my Dr. doesn't seem to really have a clue. I'm looking for answers. I should also note that my Mother had very low iron from what I remember and my daughters have the same type of thing (one has it worse than the other and is more like myself). I really appreciate any incite you might have. Thanks in advance!!

I had an iron infusion in February got my level to 59 by March 17 my level was at 2 so I have no idea where it’s going or why. I just know it does and not one Dr. Can tell me why. I even eat meat like it’s going out of style, broccoli, molasses etc etc. even gone as far as taking dedicated liver which did absolutely nothing. The homeopathic Dr. Was perplexed that I can take the liver tableys and not have any movement in my iron levels. I was the first failure in what they said 15 years. Nice so ya I have tried 15 or more (lost count) different iron supplements even ones that’s are supposed to be easy on the guts (they aren’t for me), 4 different liquid iron supplements, desiccated liver, eating organ meat etc, nothing works and I feel like Sh&@

The scale for ferritin for my diagnostic office starts at FIVE ng/L, so the doctor doesn't believe I need iron. They believe if you have at least 5 ferritin they think you're fine!!
    My levels? Ferritin: 13 ng/L ("normal" 5-204), iron: 79 ug/L ("normal" 50-170), iron saturation percent: 17% ("normal" 15-50), and iron binding capacity at a whopping 460!! ("normal" 200-489).
    I'm experiencing light headedness, shortness of breath, vision issues, coldness in hands and feet, skin dryness, fatigue, brittle hair nails (which also have developed little "dips"?) Did you experience this even though you weren't anemic??

      If measured in ng/L then optimum is 100.
      Since having my infusion I've learnt that really anything under 60 and suffering with symptoms should be treated. If you haven't any symptoms and levels are basic then your body copes and you leave it.
      But if you have symptons and you are lower than basic then talk it through with another Doctor.
      My mum had half an infusion, her level was 32.
      My friend had an infusion, not sure if it was full or half at level 52.
      You could speak to your Doctor about iron tablets.
      Ask them to look at the recent details in the lancett.
      It states about taking 65mg every other day on empty stomach with vit c.

  • @tomhennessy7276
    @tomhennessy7276 3 роки тому

    Maybe this Indian doctor can explain how everything she is saying is incorrect? Giving iron to people has been said to be THE marker for the lawyers to sue the doctor for failure in 'duty of care'. The reason everyone in the world is considered to be 'iron deficient' is because the medical profession has taken a 'too high hemoglobin' as being normal. They say when a woman has a 'low hemoglobin' of 11 makes her considered to be iron deficient anemic, when in FACT, 11 has been shown to be the healthiest, evidence based medicine. Humans are herbivore, unable to safely eat meat due to the high iron absorption properties of the type of iron, found only in meat, heme-iron. Heme-iron is absorbed at a very high rate compared to iron from any other source. It also has what is called an iron absorption enhancing factor which allows other iron ingested at the same time to be absorbed at this very high rate. This is bad. It leads to increased iron levels which cause oxidation / rust, amongst other measurable ill effects.
    So contrary to your seemingly staunch opinion of all women 'bleeding to death', cannot eat enough food to survive, etc .. which is a paradox in itself .. women do not get iron deficient, they become iron overloaded which is to be treated by a very low iron diet and iron reduction therapy, no meat eating a'tall ..
    They've tested it in those with PCOS , polycystic ovary syndrome, one in ten women have it, and it is the number one cause of infertility.
    “Effect of phlebotomy versus oral contraceptives containing cyproterone acetate on the clinical and biochemical parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.”

      Lmao Tom, if a woman is having shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness etc. and her iron is low then yes she is iron deficient. Until you menstrate every month and feel like complete crap maybe keep your opinion to yourself.

    • @tomhennessy7276
      @tomhennessy7276 2 роки тому

      @@leigh24 Women do not get preeclampsia, a'tall, UNTIL their hemoglobin rises to 11 and above, that is what is considered to be iron deficiency. They've just shown women do not begin to create new red blood cells UNTIL their hemoglobin lowers to 11. Again, that is considered to be iron deficiency.
      This is an article in which she explains how iron deficiency, contrary to popular opinion, does not occur due to menses, something I've tried to explain for almost thirty years, women do not 'bleed to death', it is illogical .
      “Iron-deficiency is not something you get just for being a lady” blogs.scientificamerican.com/context-and-variation/httpblogsscientificamericancomcontext-and-variation20110727iron-deficiency-anemia/
      And, I must say, even though I included the study, simple phlebotomy, is as effective as standard of care, in those with PCOS, which as I too, pointed out, affects one in ten women, you still tell me to keep my trap shut ..
