      That movie was before they start doing these irregular movie focused podcasts. As others have said its talked about for portion of actual dude soup around that time.
      Also I don't think the purpose of these podcast are to seek out "bad" movies and bash them. They are after all primarily gamers and AC was gaming movie that from the looks of it all of them except Bruce had hopes it would be good but were ultimately disappointed.
      Gods of Egypt was just clearly a summer popcorn flick trash. It's like doing a bump of cocaine. You do it once and awhile and it can be fun. But its nothing you should really waste time talking about.

    When Adam talked about the ending of Assassin's creed 2 gave me chills and I agree 100%. The way the hologram spoke to Desmond through Etzio was the mind fuck time travel-ish plot that the Assassin's creed should have continued. The ending of 3 just made me a little pissed off...

    • @terrythehobo8998
      @terrythehobo8998 8 років тому +3

      Daniel Q I'd argue that killing Desmond wasn't the mistake; the mistake was killing off Desmond, but then not even attempting a subplot as rich and detailed in the next game.
      Like, what even was the subplot in AC4? Some video game developer stuff? Not exactly compelling.

    • @EvilParagon2
      @EvilParagon2 8 років тому +1

      To continue with the mistake of killing Desmond, they can fix it!
      If you heard in the lore of the game, while inserting power cubes, those little storage things can hold only Those Who Came Before. To get them out required "Something ____ (great? worse? I forget)". That is very ambiguous and has come to mean the life of Desmond, however it is ambiguous! They can undo their mistake by simply saying that it required the blood of someone who was Those Who Came Before. Desmond has such blood, and it could have been made that Juno and Desmond simply switched places with Desmond inside the thing.
      Then they could do some plot hole magic, get Desmond back out and put him in some body (maybe his own if Abstergo preserved it when they captured it?) and boom! Desmond is back!

      @XboxGamer220 8 років тому +3

      Rogue is very similar to 4, but actually has a plot that is somewhat relevant to the Assassin-Templar conflict (which many people felt 4 lacked)
      Unity was a pretty decent idea that was executed really badly. Paris was a great city but had no colour to it (all grey and blue); the story was pretty meh and forgettable; and the gameplay made some interesting changes
      Rogue built on Unity, making London much nicer visually, having a more upbeat, not too serious story (which I felt wasn't great, because the result was that the Templars had no personality and went back to the Cesare "Disney villain" trope)

    I mean, the giant robot arm makes a tiny bit of sense when you think about it this way:
    Desmond got his skills from Ezio by just lying on a white bed. Wouldn't it make more sense to have that giant arm thing making you imitate the movements of the assassin and then you learn the assassin's skills?
    It's still stupid, I know, I just thought it could make a little more sense.

    My big issue with the AC universe was that I kinda agreed with the Templars. The Assassins wanted complete freedom for all, and were willing to murder and terrorize to attain that freedom. The Templars wanted global unity, and were willing to murder and terrorize to attain that unity. Ideally, free will for all sounds great, but realistically quite a few people are violent and gullible, and even more would give that freedom right back. I'd rather everybody be happy and peaceful than everybody be free to act as they please. However, the games refused to give a balanced perspective, I can't think of a single major Templar character with good intentions. It was always the Assassins with the noble cause and the Templars being nefarious and corrupt.

    • @Tmanowns
      @Tmanowns 8 років тому +9

      Darth Dingus see, I personally feel personal responsibility and liberty is more important, but feel that both organizations went too far to the extreme. That said, I want more Templars being the good guys, because I like having multiple perspectives explored.

    • @domgonzales7726
      @domgonzales7726 8 років тому

      Darth Dingus their ideal might be considered noble but their steps towards it are corrupt, for both sides sometimes usually the templars, but their ideal may be unity but it is more like slavery, everyone only following one religion, one thing etc etc

    • @THeKallOfCtulu
      @THeKallOfCtulu 8 років тому +4

      The problem was that they were both too extreme. Templar ideology is a bit too close to a fascist mindset. Keeping people together, but not of their own will. Which is kinda fucked up. Assassin's view of freedom was a bit too much. Laws are important. Reminds me a lot of the Law vs Chaos conflict from the SMT games. Except I feel like it's handled much better in that series.

      I suppose I've never been an enthusiast of the 'true reality' ideal. If it is the subjective reality you are experiencing then it is your reality. So if I could live within an artificial reality in which things like war and poverty cease to exist, I would prefer it over a greater truth. If consciousness is the awareness that the universe is not as you wish it to be, the solution to the human condition is either the removal of consciousness or the altering of reality. Fascist states technically hold similar ideals, but must resort to brutality and repression to implement themselves. The Templars have a practical goal, the Apple of Eden, which has been proven to work. They essentially aim to create a benevolent God, which I would be fine with.

    There were a few continuity problems in the film. The ones that bothered me the most were when the woman running the Animus told Cal that they only knew of 1 apple of Eden when we know isn't true due to previous games. The other one is when Aguilar saves the Prince falling off the cliff and shoots what appears to be a grappling hook, this wouldn't make sense in the time era he is set in.

    What you said around 8:00 about knowing little of the plot is interesting. What I like about Assassin's Creed is that you can get as involved in the plot as you want. Most people will play it casually and care more about the past storyline, but the first 3 games, if you really paid attention, had a really cool modern day plot mixed in with the past plot. You can get as in depth with it as you want, and I like that.

    the reason they cut their finger off in assassins creed was explained in the 1st assassins creed game, they cut your ring finger off because, where the blade is located on the wrist, once the blade is active it passes through the space where the ring finger used to be if you close your fist, they cut the finger off so u have the ability to use the blade closed fisted, it wasn't until assassins creed 2 which took place in the year 1476 where Leonardo Da-vinci invents a blade you can use without the removal of the finger, (the Spanish inquisition was established in 1478 and the new style blade wasn't popular by then, which is why they cut his finger off in the movie)

    Movies based on games should only be prequels or giant "side quests" that build up the story that the game has built, while still standing on its own as a movie. Say the entire starwars franchise was a game, and they decided to make a movie, rogue one would have still been an awesome movie cuz you don't really need to know anything about the rest of the series to enjoy and understand the movie. I realize it is pretty hard to do but I still don't understand how no movies based on games have even tried to teach us new stuff about the games. They all feel like money grabbing piles of shit

  • @EvilParagon2

    I hope they actually continue the cinematic franchise.
    This movie is actually getting useable criticism from long time fans!
    If they made the second movie and adjusted to the common criticisms they might end up with the equivalent of AC1 to AC2 in how great it is!
    Common criticisms are like, too much fog/smoke, not enough Animus sequencing and too much real world while in the animus, too many cuts, random perspectives (That .2 second crossbow shot everyone remembers), pandering (saying Leap of Faith and how many times Assassin's Creed was said, despite it being said once in the gameS), not enough humour (everyone just seems to hate Callum), and animus limits not being tested (changing history).
    Adam says this movie parallels the first game and the others agree, so if that's true, they can bring in a similar plot of AC2 for the movie.
    So Callum can go to a secret modern Assassin's hideout, use an Animus 2.0, go to another ancestor to train, maybe it could be in Japan so we can have some sort of samurai ninja assassin, also potential sword (katana) of eden storyline. The modern day scenes could involve the Bleeding Effect, and play off that whole scene in AC2 where Desmond enters the memories of Altair without the animus.
    I don't think fans would be mad about parodying the story of AC2 for a movie. But really though, they should cut back on the real world in animus scenes. One of the great things in AC would be waking up from the Animus to find out something had happened like Lucy and Warren arguing or another Power Core had been found. This spoils it for the audience, so we should have no clue what's happening outside the animus, as Callum himself has no idea either.
    And hell why not, if they go for a third movie, they could do Revelations. To Break Callum's mind and make him pick up the pieces to reseparate the minds of Spanish Assassin and Assassin 2 from himself with no modern day could be very interesting as we can learn about Callum's past, just as we did with Desmond.
    Ultimately, yeah the movie was kind of off, however, it is a great stepping stone to a potentially great franchise (even though my idea pretty much means they'll rip off the games, but that's perfectly fine because it's not like it's some offbrand AC-like game ripping it off).

    The best parts of this movie are when they take place in the past and it definitely had some well done action choreographed fight scenes. The cutting back and forth between the present and past narrative didn't fit right, though, and that's where it fell flat. I feel bad because I liked all the actors in this movie (basically playing themselves) and some of the premises were interesting but overall it just didn't work as a film.

  • @elijohnson2660

    They always make these and sarcastically claim to be professional film critics, but then they take themselves so seriously, especially Lawrence. But they never really bring up good points. Adam was the closest to talking about the biggest problem. The worst thing about the movie is it is basically a remake of Assassin's Creed one. But they changed literally everything about the main plot and how everything works. If I hadn't ever played the games, it would have been okay. The biggest sin this movie had was being a slap in the face to people who loved the games. Assassin's Creed one through three were some of my favorite games, but they dropped the plot after three. Main characters die, the main narrative structure was given up and changed, and they gave up on establishing characters. Ubisoft ruined Assassin's Creed, this movie is just a continuation of that.

    Still think that Halo The Fall of Reach (novel) needs a movie adaption. It would work so well, since it doesn't retread anything covered in the games (the events of Noble team aren't in the book) and is just a genuinely brilliant book.

    just wanted to add there's a book "assassin's creed heresy" that takes place right after syndicate and some time before the movie. It explains a bit of details on why they made the animus the way they did in the movie. Still in the middle of reading it so I can't give much answers but it does give some really good insight so far. it even mentions the smoke!

    The one most annoying part for me was it was in a different Assassins Creed universe. Because in Assassins Creed film it basically says the Apple of Eden was buried with Christopher Columbus (which was then found by the Templar's), but in the games it was found by Desmond under the Roman Colosseum....like, what?

It's like someone put all the characters in for a different demographic, James is just funny as hell (everyone is funny, but James is the icing on the cake) Bruce is that cool guy I would like to hang in a jacuzzi with, Adam is the one I would like to watch depressing movies with and break games, and Lawrence is my go to bar buddy, hearing him rant about shitty anime is my dream. And yes, my life has come to this. Love it guys.

    Things that I did not like:
    - Too many Altaïr/Eagle references.
    - There is not a single scene of stealth action.
    - The animus machine makes it impossible for Callum to roll, but he rolls all the time.
    - The movie plot spends more time in the present than in the past.
    - The combat is too "kung fuish".

    what adam is talking about at 11:50 is what made me fall in love with the game. They had me so hooked on the first civilization people and everything that happened before. And SPOILERS........... After desmond dies and Juno says she's coming or something like that I really thought the series was gonna take an insane turn and get even better. But sadly we got black flag (love the game, but not for the story) everything fell apart afterward

  • @XboxGamer220

    As a huge fan of the franchise, this film just annoyed me.
    SPOILERS FOR FILM!!!!!!
    The modern day aspect was a cool idea, but executed poorly. Callum's conflict with his father I didn't think had any real weight behind it, and so I just didn't find any reason to care.
    They seemed to have retconned the Templars, cause there was the bit where Her Excellency was talking about how the Spanish Inquisition was the closest time that they nearly got an Apple, which if one remembers to all the games the Templars have vaults where they have stoted all the artefacts that they have collected.
    Sophie Rikkin's character was weird. She had her whole "I wanna cure violence" and being more of a scientist in her goals, and then the second her dad dies she goes full Templar just cause she wants the glory of her work noticed, having been annoyed that Alan took that glory.
    Whilst Sophie had her sudden heel turn, Callum had his own in suddenly sympathising with the Assassins and it just felt really forced for both of them.
    The whole past was a wasted oppurtunity. There was no character or personality, no history, no development, no interest. The only good things about the past was the visual quality and the action scenes - those I though were done very well.

    Warning, Tripe follows:
    The story of Assassins Creed is kinda hard to find because a substantial amount is hidden in the side quests.
    Humans were slaves. Adam and Eve were humans, they stole a 'Apple' (there are multiple apples, with different functions) from the Ancient-Super beings to help free humanity and start a revolt, which was successful. However some Ancinet-Beings survived, in hiding, plus some holograms and stuff.
    Human then lived with all this epic technology. Then an extinction event happens (solar flare) and wiped out all the tech and reset humanity.
    Fast forward, Templar and Assassins were once one group but they split. Both believe in helping humanity, Assassins want absolute freedom, Templars want peace through subjugation (basically).
    In the modern day the Assassins and Template became less.. staby... and started fighting each other through various political parties and corporations and what not, however a Templar infiltrated the Assassins leadership and betrayed the worldwide order, tipping the scale to the Templar, which is how the find Desmond in the first game.

    I completely agree with Adam on this, it's a lot of wasted potential, both this movie and Batman v Superman, and for similar reasons. I also think James got a lot of things right about why a lot of videogame movies usually don't work.

    This movie is definitely not for average movie goers, this movie is solely for Assassin's Creed fans, do with that as you will. For Assassin's Creed fans, this movie gets almost everything right! The animus, Abstergo, the Templars, the Creed, the bleeding effect, the piece of eden, etc. etc.
    My only criticism of this movie, is that they didn't flesh out the characters as much as I would've like them to. I didn't care about Michael Fassbender's character as much as I did for Desmond, or Lucy, or Rebecca and Shaun. I cared more about the black guy sidekick than I did for the protagonist, because at least he had a personality, he was witty, clever, loyal, principled. The protagonist had no defining characteristic, he was bland and empty. Even though it will never happen (since this looks like a failure in Ubisoft's eyes, and anything that can't make money, they won't do) a squeal focused more on the characters and the "brotherhood" rather than setting up the lore, would definitely be successful.

    If there's one movie I would truly recommend from 2016, it would be Moonlight. I would love to hear your opinion on it. It watched it for a film class assignment, going into the theater with absolutely no information, except it's extremely high ratings. It's deep, the cinematography is beautiful, the music is fantastic and goddamnit, the character progression is unbelievable.
    Hell or High Water was great as well, but if there's just one movie to pick, nothing beats Moonlight.

    Just saw it a few hours ago. Honestly it wasn't as bad as a lot of people said. They had to explain a lot of the back story while also telling a new story in a relatively short period of time. Its always hard with these because the game takes hours upon hours to complete and its in first person essentially with cut scenes. This was almost 2 hours in third person, so of course the experience was going to be different. The guy sitting next to me was there with his son who had played some of the games. He said he liked it even though he had not played any of the games.
    There was a few things I didn't like, but its to be expected that the story and scene had to be given the hollywood treatment so some of it I did question. I do agree with Lawrence about the focus on violence and the beginning jumped a few key things along with skimming over some details that left me confused. The reason why Callum ended up in prison was just based on adult who grew up having rough times and did some bad things.
    The fighting style annoyed me a little. Playing through the games apart from kicks to the gut, the style was more grounded and the few times that there was flying roundhouse kicks didn't really fit the feel of the fighting style which is more intricate weapon based.
    I kind of wish that it followed the games rather than a whole new character, and maybe draw it out over a few films like the Marvel franchise so the basic elements are there and then the next goes into more details and connects more dots to expand what is already there.

    I really liked adam's point about that part in AC2. They didn't just go a different way, they got a late pregnancy abortion on the plot that Desmond would come into his own to do modern assassin missions. I think this is what you get with shareholder based companies like Ubisoft. no citation on that but i'm assuming based on their actions towards recent buyers.

    "There's plenty of videogames out there if you want to experience movie like shit". James makes the best point why recent film adaptations of video games, such as Assassin's Creed and Hitman: Agent 47 don't work: video games themselves are already cinematic, so there's no point adapting it into film. This will be the exact same problem the Uncharted film will have, because they already have an established emphasis on cinematic storytelling whilst also having the advantage of player interaction and involvement.
    I'm still with Adam though, in the fact that I also believe film adaptations of video games can and will work, it's just that the people making the films have to figure out a different way to present them, or find completely different material in the first place.

    I personally liked the movie, however I also like the Warcraft movie. My opinion of both movies is most likely heavily influenced by the fact that I am a huge fanboy for both Warcraft and Assassin's Creed.
    I don't know if it's because I had so low expectations after hearing it sucked, or if it's because I am one of the few AC fans who like the modern day storyline, but I enjoyed it.
    Don't get me wrong, it was flawed, the script was really bad, and there was a lot of room for improvement. As a big fan of the game I also noticed a bunch of smaller inconsistencies between the games and the movie. I could write paragraph after paragraph about how to "fix" the movie. But I won't.
    What saved the movie for me was the cool action scenes, the over arching story (aside from the character's lines), and the fact that, unlike Warcraft, this was all in canon of the games. This happened in the games as well.
    So all in all, I found this movie enjoyable, a 4/5. But I can also see why people disliked it, just like Warcraft.

    As an Assassin's Creed fanboy, I enjoyed the movie for what it is. As cool action movie in the spirit of the AC games. As a fan, there were a few things that irked me, like the scene where Aguliar is getting his finger cut off as part of his initiation. At that point in the AC timeline(1492), the Assassin's didn't remove their ring finger(Ezio just got a brand on his finger instead.
    Another thing was that I always assumed Jeremy Irons character(Alan Rikkin) as Grand Master of the modern day Templars. Here it seems like he's just associated with them, kinda feels a little demeaning of someone of Jeremy Iron's stature.
    Despite it's flaws, I would be interested if they made a sequel starring Michael Fasbender. I do really hope that Ubisoft doesn't try to entwine this with the video game story. That AC: Lineage movie they made(the one focused on Ezio's father), was really good and set the tone for AC2. I wish they would do more projects like that.

    I would also add (relating to the box office) that not all the money made by the film goes back to the studio. The theatres that show the film take a chunk of the money too. I think it's something like 1/3, I may be wrong though.
