- Not all journeys are the same. As a child, composer Steve Reich frequently travelled back and forth by train to see his separated parents between New York and Los Angeles between 1939 to 1942. As a Jew, Reich later looked back to realise that he might have been making very different train journeys in that period had he been born on the other side of the Atlantic.
These ideas of travel, early life and afterlife form the heart of ‘Different Trains’, which began its life not as a musical composition but as a series of interviews and recordings conducted by Reich. The recordings play out as fragments and speech samples played on a pre-recorded tape, layered with strings which switch between rhythmic patterns and literally imitating the speech melody.
We’re left imagining the painfully contrasting destinies faced by travellers, which is as relevant now as it was in the 20th Century. We’re all travelling on different trains.
