Like many have commented before me, this has since become the legitimate go-to Christmas song round the house. I was streaming Hypnospace Outlaw for some friends, and we came across this in-game and were just floored at what a legitimately incredible song it was (Not to say Hot Dad doesn't knock it out of the park other times). We listened and watched in silence, and now years later to this day it's the one of the first things me and my friends do to start out the Christmas season, just having this play on repeat during hangouts and car rides while we sing along. Here's to many more.
Chowder Man died when I was a little kid, but my parents used to listen to him when they first started dating. They were so heartbroken when he passed. Every year I come back to this song and appreciate it just a little more. There really is Christmas pain in Christmas town this time of year. It’s a complicated season. Lots of expectations you feel you can’t meet, lots of forgotten promises, lots of silent regrets. I’m grateful for Chowder Man for writing something that talks to those real emotions, instead of the usual saccharine guff.
This song gets way more emotionally resonant when you know Chowder Man's backstory from Hypnospace Outlaw. It feels like Chowder Man's good-bye, somehow. Hypnospace Outlaw is the all-time champion in making you feel deep feelings for silly joke characters.
Chowder Man, as a character, seems to mellow with age once he fades into obscurity, and it makes me feel really sad to see how apologetic he becomes for everything.
Hi 3 year old comment I think the thing that really nails it is the really evocative mixture of emotional rawness and clumsiness. The Chowder Man is putting everything on display here, he feels like he could have been so much more than he was. We don't know who he's singing to, but his feelings of inadequacy resonate with what we know about him from the game. Because even though everyone treats him like a joke, we know that he does have real talent as evidenced by the technical and conceptual stuff he did like Ready To Shave. But that didn't do well. So he tries to get back into the spotlight every way he can, from re-inventing himself to integrating himself into every commercial enterprise he can. But that all ends with him losing his leg and killing a friend. He didn't want it to end that way. He doesn't want it all to end this way. But it does. He's left wishing he could've been more than who he was, because if he was, maybe it wouldn't have. He doesn't express this through consistently deep words or fluid poetry, either, because he's just... him. For every seriously poetic line(Feel just like a present, empty box wrapped up with bows) there's a clumsy one (I only let you down I see a problem with that). There's an echo there with one of the honestly haunting silly lyrics in another one of his songs, "The Chowder Man is not enough" in the last song he ever released. He wants to make it right. He thinks he could have. He refuses to blame anyone else but himself. That we know that it couldn't, that we want the chowder man to be able to forgive himself because it wasn't his fault things turned out this way, gives the song a real honest sadness.
When I found out that a certain angsty teen didn't make it when the update came online, I was actually sad, like I wanted him to come around and grow as a person but alas, he's gone but I'll never forget him
I straight up feel like Chowder Man was one of the most depressing characters in Hypnospace Outlaw. Especially with the True Tranquility stuff and from his website Q&As you can see he USED to be famous but now he's mostly forgotten and only really brought up as a sort of meme. So when people are giving him attention it's ironically and he doesn't seem to realize it. He also doesn't seem to get that his corporate advertising deals aren't because they like him, it's because he's got a weird ironic cult following they can exploit. Then after a gimmick gone wrong he loses not just his leg and likely his ability to perform, but one of his best friends and bandmates. He's never truly happy and parties constantly to try and feel *something* The fact that he's barely mentioned in the aftermath of everything makes me worried he didn't live to see much of the new millennium. I hope if there's ever more material put out for the Hypnospace universe that we get an update on ol Chowder Man. I love how the Chowder Man looks like a silly character from a silly musician, but your most heartfelt songs come from him. I guess having him as a sock puppet makes writing ballads easier?
this is very true, great observation! i've found that writing from the perspective of the character makes certain things much easier to do, and unlocks a different sort of creativity. in his case, it's a lot easier for me to take certain types of risks because i can control the narrative so closely. and then knowing that he's such a "hopeless" character allows me to tap into that sort of tragic, yet determined energy because i know exactly what WOULD be expected of a character like him, so it makes the rules a lot easier to break. and then i end up sort of "accidentally" doing things that surprise and impress me. #blessed
Up until now, I only listened to "In The End", by Linkin Park. 214,756 times. In the last day and a half, I've listened to this 34 times and counting. Thank you for broadening my horizons, Chowder Man.
I finally got around to playing Hypnospace Outlaw, and finding this video was the moment I truly fell in love with the game. Sometimes I forget just how important the musical identity of a game can be to the experience, but I hope you know how much you elevated the world of Hypnospace. You not only brought your A game in terms of quality here, but you crafted a very compelling character through your melodies and lyrics. Listening to The Chowder Man's Hotel Room passively, only processing it as a silly parody at first, and then later revisiting it after understanding his character more, and hearing the loneliness and desperation for relevance was really fascinating. Thank you for adding so much to an already incredible experience, the devs really got the right guy for the job.
there's so much charm to this song, silly as it is. i adore the elves clapping along to the first chorus. at first i wrote off the whole chowder man thing as some silly meme but i love every single number under his belt, advert jingles, christmas song and everything inbetween. these jokes are so wonderfully-engineered that the punchline is the music actually being good, congratulations hot dad. it would've been so much easier to make the music purposefully bad and call it a day. big ups to dave pino for those SICK RIFFS, too.
I had no idea what I was going to get clicking that video file and ended up having a transcendent experience. Please get this on the radio because this is legitimately amazing.
Yep. I'm back. Merry Christmas chowder. Miss you. I was a roadie for you, but health issues led to me retire before the incident. Tried to reach out after the incident, guess I didn't try hard enough. Love you man.
The story of Chowder Man genuinely tugged at my heartstrings. When he was at the top, he was the happiest man alive. He had finally accomplished his dream of becoming a famous musician, and his first big tour was coming up. But as guilt and controversy overwhelm him, all he has left to do is leave.
"I could feel it in my bones. He was coming here, he would enter my home. Climbing down the Chimney, bag of "secrets" on his back. You could sense my *pain* but you were stronger then that-" Are actually fucking terrifying lyrics wtf? What a masterpiece...
I absolutely love this song. It feels good to listen to it. I know there are aspects of this that are tongue in cheek, but I think it's a beautiful piece. The funny parts just make it more for me. A good friend of mine, Philip - my favorite person of the male persuasion - killed himself this year. He used to host an annual livestream of old (and bad) TV Christmas specials. He would also include music videos that were, generally, from the 80s and which had very little self-awareness of how bad they were (or would become). But every now and then, he would throw in something that had actual merit, which scratched the same itch as those old, bad media. One year, he put Taco Bell Christmas in, and we all loved it. The lyrics became a meme of sorts in our friend group - a group that really only knew each other online, through him. Taco Bell Christmas is how I found your work. I took over hosting of the livestream (called the Xmas Bash) last Christmas. And this Christmas, he won't be here for it. I wanted so much to show him this video, for him to hear this song. He would have loved this exact mix of humor and pathos. He would have loved every bit of it. I know, because I love every bit of it. And now that he left, this song has taken on even more meaning for me. I know the song is about a romantic relationship. But now it's about Philip too. I think that makes this art, that it has accreted meaning for me. I still plan to include this in this year's Xmas Bash, as a gift for all of the other friends I have because of Philip, friends I met through these Christmas livestreams. I hope that's not stealing. I'm happy to pay you any amount you ask. I want to invite you to the livestream as well. I'm hesitant to include the link here, because then it probably looks like I'm just trying to advertise it. Also I'm just inviting you, and not, like, everybody. I think you might like it. And I think it would tickle everyone else to meet the guy who made Taco Bell Christmas. Thank you for making this. I love it.

The snow is fallin' down, I'm so cold and afraid
Baby I need you in my life, but you ain't comin' round
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
Under mistletoe I dream
Two pairs of lips, just her and me
She ain't there so we ain't gonna kiss
In Christmas town!
~Guitar Solo~
I wish that you were here Christmas time in my home
But Santa Claus is cryin' and the Chowder Man knows
I'm drownin' in the sorrow, lost presents, and love
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
Bottle in my hand, try to drink it away
The snow is fallin' down, I'm so cold and afraid
Baby I need you in my life, but you ain't comin' round
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
There's Christmas pain in Christmas town
Christmas pain in Christmas town
I love how the 3D Santa moves around like a serial killer
Man, curse Merchantsoft for forcing this to be created as a Hypnospace exclusive! Now the only version of this music video has lower resolution than a single Monarch TS screen and lower framerate than a flipbook. *WITW were they thinking???*
I can't believe this only cost 11 hypnocoin it's beautiful and now I wanna cry
Woke up Christmas morning, I could feel it in my bones
He was coming here, he would enter my home
Climbing down the chimney, bag of secrets on his back
You could sense my pain, but you were stronger than that
I can't, I can't wait to open all my presents
I can, I can change, I'll be the one you needed
Please, honey, you should stay, we'll work it out together
Santa's on his way, he'll make it better
Coulda been good ones, coulda been bad ones
Coulda been only ones
Shoulda been bolder, shoulda been brave enough
Shoulda been there when you needed me the most
I wish that you were here, Christmas time in my home
But Santa Claus is crying and the Chowder Man knows
I'm drownin' in the sorrow, lost presents and love
There's Christmas pain in Christmas Town
Bottle in my hand, try to drink it away
The snow is falling down, I'm so cold and afraid
Baby, I need you in my life, but you ain't comin' 'round
There's Christmas pain in Christmas Town
Felt just like a present, empty box, wrapped up with bow
Open me up, baby, you've got nothing to show
Reindeer in the sky, a sleigh with magic in the back
I only let you down, I see a problem with that
If I, if I could, I would slide down your chimney
I would, I would bring tenderness and compassion
I dream of your face, most nights during my slumber
Please let the Chowder Man make it right
Coulda been good ones, coulda been bad ones
Coulda been only ones
Shoulda been bolder, shoulda been brave enough
Shoulda been there when you needed me the most
Coulda been good ones, coulda been bad ones
Coulda been only ones
Shoulda been bolder, shoulda been brave enough
Shoulda been there for you, baby
To hold you tight
I wish that you were here, Christmas time in my home
But Santa Claus is crying and the Chowder Man knows
I'm drownin' in the sorrow, lost presents and love
There's Christmas pain in Christmas Town
Bottle in my hand, try to drink it away

Watching this on Christmas, just what I needed to see and hear. Thank you!
The only christmas song I'll listen to voluntarily.
If I have kids, I hope they're prepared to get sick of it.
OMFG, I remember when I got that Hypnospace promotional CD-ROM with this AVI file on it. I would put it on loop for hours on Mom's Compaq and drive my parents crazy, thanks for converting it to UA-cam!
those were simpler times! things were so much easier back then.
hypnospace doesn't support.avis ... im onto you, cool space user
Actually there was that debug feature because early versions supported AVI, that’s why they could play it on that CD-ROM.
bwl! Same here!
Was it something with the Samwich format? It's been a while honestly
I love you Chowder Man
The delightful irony of this video having an ultra HD option
Merry Christmas 2024!
THIS IS THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD
0:36 I love how Dave Pino just noclips into the sled in mid-air
Just came across this in the game
what an absolutely certified banger
i was playing on stream and everyone of my viewers was blown away too
ripping this banger every year
getting this video in hypnospace put that game on my top 10 games of all time
I requested this on my local radio station they said it was too cool for human ears
I’m an avid teentopia user but even I love the chowder man!
i'm so happy to see you willing to go outside of your comfort zone a little bit and give the chowder man a fair shot! 😍
this is up there with last christmas imo
Shoutout to the kid with the SICK MOVES at 5:20
The tradition continues, gotta listen to this every year, RPS brought me here yet again!
This is your magnum holiday opus.
i'm really honored and flattered that you'd think that!
Screw Last Christmas, this is my new Christmas heartbreak classic. Genuinely gorgeous.
thank you, david! i really appreciate you and your kindness.
Never forget the tragedy of coolfest 99! I miss you chowder man!
I love the Sierra CD-ROM game look this video has.
it came through so good, right? jay is _really_ good at this.
I will try push this to be covered by our family band next year.
Guys, hear me out. I think the Chowder Man is Hot Dad. Have you seen Hot Dad and Chowder Man in the same room?
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh~!!!!!!
Nahhh, that can't be true, they have completely different- BOBA3597. ONLY YOU CAN READ THIS PART OF THE COMMENT. CEASE YOUR INVESTIGATIONS.
Yeah you can! You see it right here 0:52
only REAL chowder man fans understand the pain
My manager asked me today what my favorite Xmas song was. I told her it was this, she didn't know it existed.
#blessed
Thanks @hotdad for always being a part of my Christmas traditions.
It's that Chowder time of year, again Part III: A New Hope
"If I could I would slide down your chimney"
I don't know what to make of that
he wants to literally slide down someone's chimney so he can be with them! the chowder man is pure.
he just wants to be a shoulder to cry on
@@HotDad I should have never doubted Chowder Man's virtuous intentions
@@jaytholen934 I love that you're still randomly showing up in the comments of related videos 😁
Happy Easter!
@@TransistorBased same!
Up until now, I only listened to "In The End", by Linkin Park. 214,756 times. In the last day and a half, I've listened to this 34 times and counting. Thank you for broadening my horizons, Chowder Man.
You should give Seepage a try!
@@robert779 BWL, seepage?!? i listen to basasia all the time.. fungus 4 lyfe!!!
@@robert779 Thank you for the suggestion! I was listening to this exclusively for the last 3 years. I'll try Seepage soon.
That time of year again
It's that Chowder time of year again, again
This song is so good. The child dancing at the end is the "icing" on the cake.
Coolpunk has me making ice puns.
You know, for a joke, these Chowder Man songs are an absolute bop.
definitely worth the 11hc
I listen to this all year long but it just hits different in December
This song is seriously beautiful and I can't stop listening to it.
i appreciate your kind words! thank you so much.
I listen to this every Christmas
The Chowder Man is the true hero we need, but we absolutely do not deserve him
there's so much charm to this song, silly as it is. i adore the elves clapping along to the first chorus. at first i wrote off the whole chowder man thing as some silly meme but i love every single number under his belt, advert jingles, christmas song and everything inbetween. these jokes are so wonderfully-engineered that the punchline is the music actually being good, congratulations hot dad. it would've been so much easier to make the music purposefully bad and call it a day. big ups to dave pino for those SICK RIFFS, too.
Coolfest '99 was some real Christmas Pain in Christmas Town.
blasting this shit for the holidays. thank you chowder man
Showed this to a bunch of assholes and they all loved it! Thanks, what a badass song!
Time to bust this one out again
Rest In Peace “Kuff” Johnson.
We will never forget you 🫡
I would legit pay for a full Chowder Man album. This is definitely one of my favorite things to find on Hypnospace Outlaw
Just so you know, there *is* a full Chowder Man album! It's called The Chowder Man :)
I love it.
That elf
He groovin
I unironically love this.
I also unironically love squisherz
It's that Chowder time of year, again vol. 4: A Song of Chowder and Man
Merry Christmas, The Chowder Man
This is the best Christmas song about pain since Wham!'s Last Christmas. Phenomenal.
