Hey buddy! Great video, just one thing. You mentioned you have a video to change capacitors? Maybe since that’s the ONE thing homeowners think they’re the master at, it shouldn’t be up! 43% of a southern A/C companies calls are capacitor calls. That’s a lot of money and potential hazard to the customer. J/S
Yeah I said the same thing check the capacitor first before you check all that other stuff is nonsense capacitor with tell you everything you need to know if you got a voltage going to your capacitor going through your compressor this guy such a dumbass talk too much
@@jericosha2842You are correct. Check the cap first! But I'll take it one step further. One of the methods I use is NOT to use my bare fingers to push in a contractor. I mean, everybody has their own extremely dangerous methods to check compressor operation (Sam for instance). I mean, if the compressor has a dead short, the contactor may literally blow out a nice big arc of uncontrollable flow of electrons, coming into contact with your finger and then running thru your body to ground and possible killing you-hopefully you have insulated boots on and the ground is dry as this might save you. Of course, if you didn't use this really stupid method, that would probably save you to.
It's the basic simple things that you have to learn before mastering the more technical issues. It took me a while to learn it but I have tested my method with many technicians and once they understand the simple basic then they naturally have a desire to learn more! Learn what you can at school... just remember when your out on the field it's a different experience that you can't learn in class. I say that to encourage you my friend your desire to learn already shows! That is what makes a good technician. You have to love what you do! 🙂
Hi leo. Ty for your advice. Ill mention that. N the vent in the kitchen is in the very corner on top of the kitchen cabinets. Also leo. Last. Night it was 73 degrees here. I had my air on 68 n the air never came on at all during the night. And no the windows n insulation in my apt suck. I watched the video with Sam doing the air check around the air n . I have air coming out of my air inside the house. . I just have to get a new air guy in here.
@@MoreThanMaintenance I'm trying to learn some stuff about HVAC systems what's your thoughts on Aprilaire thermostats in particular the 8400 series thermostats because on those there is no slide switches for the fan or system selection it's push buttons on the thermostat itself so is that something that could be more problematic than the thermostats that have slide switches for the fan and system
Hey Sam... I have voltage going to my contactor. But it's not sucking in. My thermostat has gone blank. I installed a dummy thermostat and it's dead also. I have no power to the thermostat. No 24v. In my attic the furnace led light is on. Not blinking just on. On the outside unit if I push the contactor in the system will kick on but the thermostat remains dead. Wtf do you think the problem is? Transformer? Thanks
How does a capacitor actually function? Doesnt it boost voltage to allow the compressor to start or run? I get what they do to a certain degree but i want to know exactly how they work! Especially the differences between a run and start cap!
hi, why did the pressures on hi and low side went to zero as soon as you removed the hoses? aren't the manifold supposed to show pressure readings because your gauge is in the closed position? thanks.
Once I remove the hoses it no longer reads pressure does that make sense? The hose is not connected to anything... no pressure reading... the hose connects to condenser it picks up the pressure of the refrigerant. Remove the hose and no more pressure reading. 👍
The manometer indicates the pressure in the hose regardless of the position of the faucet (be it closed or open). When the faucet is closed it does NOT cut off the hose from the manometer but only the orifice going to the middle of the manifold (where the yellow port is).
The hose enters the manifold and has two orifices, one to the meter and one to the middle port (yellow). The faucet controls ONLY the orifice going into the middle of the manifold (where the yellow port is).
@@lisac8735 EVERY system has a return. I'm taking about adding an additional return near the kitchen. Returns suck in hot air and increase airflow for your system. You can NEVER have too many returns.
It can be the thermostat... or the contactor itself. Check the low voltage wires on the contactor are they getting 24 volts? If so the thermostat for some reason is sending the signal. If not then the contactor is stuck in for some reason and may need to be replaced.
Its getting low voltage but fan and compressor not kicking on.and contactor stays stuck.if i switch to off it releases. I jumped red and yellow from tstat and does same thing. I replaced contactor. I pulled the disconnect and and tstat off and stays stuck. I removed yellow wire from control board in furnace and it released. Its a lennox whisper.

Jonathan Avila check the amp of one of the wires from the compressor to the contactor on start up. If you have no amp load the wires may not be connected to the compressor. Check those wires.
And you guys wonder why your business could be better when you go on UA-cam and tell customers how to fix their own air conditioning units. Real smart !
Harry Hathaway That's correct. This is one of the reasons why ac mechanics have become a dime a dozen. This video, which happens to be very good, should be shown in a training center for air conditioning mechanics.....not on YT.

Thankyou lam new to the trade, as hvac technician, you explain very well easy to understand l would like to say thankyou

Great Video Sam you give step by step diagnostics. Thanks again.

I REALLY LIKED TH WAY YOU TELL STEP BY STEP THANK YOU SO MUCH
With your Klein meter (I have the same one) you can check the capacitance of your start capacitor. Love your videos
But thats a run cap so now what!?!? LOL!
Temp is not calibrated right. I have the same one as well, what a fail on Klein’s part you can’t even recalibrate it
Thank you .... for all your videos very detailed and informative! ☺️
Very detailed tutorial, thanks for sharing your knowledge blessing and more blessings to you and your family in Jesus name Amen
By far one of the best videos for someone to diagnose a home unit condenser
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I needed this vid. I'm new to the trade. Still in hvac school right now.
Keep the hvac vids coming.

That was the sidewalk temp, not air temp. But still it was at least 90f I would think

Is there a heat threshold for the fan and compressor that lets you know something is wrong? Over 150°F?
You can look at the fan motor and it will tell you if the unit is thermally protected as well as rating. 👍
How cold is the pipes
Mu air is very u even in my apt. Any ideas. The vents are open . The kitchen never really kools off.
Being that you're in an appartment, you're kinda screwed! You need to add a return, which may be impossible in your instance☹

push it in with an insulated screwdriver. thats what i do. can never be too safe.
If the compressor still doesn’t come on what would the next step be?
Jonathan Avila check the amp of one of the wires from the compressor to the contactor on start up. If you have no amp load the wires may not be connected to the compressor. Check those wires.
Did u check the capacitor ? (The one which is marked HERM)
Cannot find your channel on email just typing Sam
What city are you working in?
I wish sam was in NJ
Should I be careful sticking my finger in to push the contractor on?
You should be fine. If your not comfortable purchase an insulated screw driver and use that to push in contactor. 👍
I always use a sharpie to push contactors in.
