He wronged Yzerman in some way that we don't know of. Yzerman sent him to Siberia. Yzerman paid for his first class ticket to get there. Yzerman isn't stupid. He didn't try to find a taker for Walman. He paid for him to go to one of the worst teams on the other side of the country. This trade was vengeance.

If that were true(I'm certain it's not), then that would be the most idiotic look for Yzerman that could be imagined. An actual professional is looking to improve the team, not give away assets out of vengeance or spite. If he did that, he should be fired on the spot.

Has anyone thought that the Walman trade could have been a favour to San Jose for potentially helping Yzerman out later this week by getting involved in a 3 way trade and retaining salary or doing a sign and trade? San Jose could potentially sign Kane or Stamkos and then immediately move them to Detroit with salary retained? San Jose needs to get to the cap floor and Yzerman wants to make big moves but needs more cap space? Walman could have been the sweetener for them to do us a favour in the coming days. Yzerman would not do this for no reason.

I do wonder if he has a relationship with Grier that is closer than some other GMs. The Sharks also got Zadina and Kostin from the Wings, fwiw. I get that "future considerations" is an empty return but that doesn't mean Grier hasn't verbally committed to doing Yzerman a favor in the future. The fact that people are really upset Yzerman gave away a second rd pick they had for literally 2 hours is pretty funny. It still is a puzzling kind of deal but it's still just a cap / roster dump to make room for a young D-Man handpicked by Yzerman to take the spot. The pick is basically a coin toss for getting an NHLer in 4-5 years time as it is. I get why people are confused but it's kind of a nothingburger from my perspective.

Nobody is taking Holl - he will get bought out . Petry is a 3rd pair defenseman that the red wings pay $2 mill/ yr for this year - he will probably be sticking around . This was a message to the other players on that team - Walman was on an affordable contract it was not a big deal in as far as salary - he was healthy scratched during the playoff run - so that tells you he was not being held with a lot of esteem . When your negotiating - it sometimes pays to shoot one or two of the hostages just to show the others you are serious . I think the red wings roster that might think winning is a luxury might be thinking twice, You people call him Stevie like he is your little brother - he is a 59 yr old man - and a ruthless competitor he is going to build a team that he knows competes for championships - and he doesn't give a flying F whatever anyone else thinks about it.

What we do know is that the NHL as a league has approved the deal.
What the deal is about or beyond what is already clear, none of us knows typically S.Y move.
What I know is that it cannot be about using SJ as a 3rd party for retained salaries as SJ already has 3 players (max) in Burns, EK65 and Hertl. In addition, there is a time limit on how long such a deal can run without specifying the actual deal.

Future considerations is just a technical label that they add just because the rules dictate that you cannot trade a player for nothing. You must get a return. So they attach the 'future considerations' label to it just to make it legal through the rulebook and collective bargaining agreement. It essentially means we gave them a player and a draft pick for free.

I have been thinking a lot about this and watching a lot of Red Wings podcasts (for lack of a better word on UA-cam. Originally I thought that it was because of some issue the public was unaware of so they wanted to move him. I no longer think that. As has been mentioned he didn't play down the stretch and in the 2nd half of the season Seider was usually paired with Chiarot. Given that there really wasn't a place for him. If he is not playing with Seider and Edvinsson being the LD on the 2nd pairing, combing that With Johansson making the team there was a log jam at 3rd pair defenseman. He had to get moved. The same is true for Holl and possibly Maatta. The question is why didn't Yzerman get more for Walman. Maybe I am thinking Walman is worth more than people are willing to pay, but I think Walman could have been traded straight up for a pick. I get not wanting to add a roster player either in Detroit or Grand Rapids, but getting a pick is a different matter and we are no where near 90 man limit of our reserve list. I don't like criticizing Stevie, but Lego was right. Terrible asset management.
About the Gibson trade, at first I didn't like it. I was really intrigued by it, I liked his profile, but I can see how a winger(who we like) might be better for our prospect pool.
Also there is talk about Holl and why we traded Walman instead of Holl, well that is probably because no one wanted him and it would cost a lot more to move him. I am sure that Holl will be moved, but it will cost us.
If we don't re-sign Ghost, I think we get a D-man in free agency. Either a LD to be paired with Seider or a RD to be paired with Edvinsson.

Petry isn't tradeable, Holl may be tradeable, and there's no guarantee Ghost is going to resign. So losing Ghost and trading Walman opens up 2 spots on defense. Edvinsson and Johansson should take those 2 spots. Seider will be the on the first PP unit next year. He's earned that and deserves it. So now our defense is based on Seider, Edvinsson, Johansson, Petry, Maatta, and Chiarot, with Holl a healthy scratch. Also I hear that Yzerman is still in talks with Kane, and he wants double of what he was paid last year, which means $5.5 million minimum. I think he may go after Stamkos or Guentzel. Let's see what happens tonight if he pulls off a trade during the draft. You never know what he has up his sleeve.

Utah has ONE defenseman signed.. and he's an AHL fill-in. I suppose Walman likely had AZ on his mod no-trade, but I'm not sure if that applies, since Utah didn't get to keep the Coyotes branding or history. If not, Utah has NO defenseman, all of the cap space in the world, and enough draft picks to take them into 2030. Walman would instantly be a top pair there, so Yzerman couldn't get anything for Walman? Also knowing SJ would've picked him up for free, has to mean something else is cooking. Plus, there's a new rule against "future considerations" that it can't be nothing. Those trades need to be approved beforehand, and something has to be thrown in within a specified time, without special exception, so something is in the mix there. It only doesn't make sense - until it makes sense, I guess..

Walman may have traded for cap space only. Not that he was a bad player for the Wings while he was here. During the recent playoff run from last season when they almost made it he was a healthy scratch from many of our final 20 games and it was unfair to him and that has to say something about the way Yzerman is trying to build our team. We need room on the roster for some of the younger defensemen that have shown promise in Grand Rapids and need to come up here to prove it. We sacrificed him to give him a better chance to thrive where he can. Future considerations might not seem like much now, but it will pay dividends for us later on.

After the Sharks moved up from #14 to #11 today, it got me to wondering if San Jose had struck a tentative deal with Buffalo prior to the Walman deal, and the "future considerations" is that if the player Detroit covets is still available at #11, the Red Wings can move up for the #15 pick and a late rounder. Prior to the Buffalo trade, I just figured Detroit got San Jose's assurance they wouldn't take Detroit's guy one pick earlier, but that just didn't seem like enough going back to Detroit. The option to move from #15 up to #11 would be significant in this year's draft though.

Something I do not think I've seen mentioned is Yzerman's relationship with San Jose GM Verbeek. San Jose needs some decent players if they want their #1 pick in the NHL this year. Yzerman needs to clear cap space to be aggressive in free agency given the uncertainty of the Seider and Raymond contracts. Add the fact Edvinsson is LD and played serious minutes at the end of the year while pushing for the playoffs and is better defensively. Likely Yzerman is replacing Walman with a better and more defensively responsible Edvinsson. Yzerman just did his friend Verbeek a solid while at the same time clearing a roster spot and freeing cap space. Future considerations may be San Jose taking on some salary for Detroit if they need it trying to sign free agents since San Jose needs to reach the cap floor. Yzerman needs that wiggle room in place before July 1st. Getting salary back in a trade is likely not what Yzerman wanted. The Nashville trade for the 2nd round pick Yzerman gave Verbeek involved swapping two prospects which are no where close to NHL ready.
I find this to be a good move at face value. Yzerman helps Verbeek, Verbeek helps Yzerman. Yzerman can now be aggressive in free agency. Declaring this bad asset management right now is premature and quite frankly ridiculous. I like Walman and am sad to see him go. However, Yzerman found room for Edvinsson. He will be on an entry level contract at the same position Walman played. You want the kids to take spots, someone has to go. If Edvinsson wasn't NHL ready, Walman is probably still in Detroit. If you don't have Seider and Raymond signed, you ensure you have the flexibility for a FA season with several very good players. I find the Walman trade between Yzerman and Verbeek good for both parties involved. If Jake Walman being on your roster is the difference between making the playoffs and not, you are not where you want to be in the first place. If Yzerman can land a big FA or two, this move was well worth it. Bottom line, he gave Verbeek Walman to move the salary and make room for Edvinson. The second round pick is likely where "future considerations" come in. You would have to assume given Yzerman's track record, those considerations may require a second round pick.

Yzerman is literally rebuilding the Wings from a dumpster fire like when he was drafted. Don't forget the whole reason the Wings were a dumpster fire was because Holland signed crazy long term contracts that the team is still paying on. He just dumped 3.4M of cap space, and made room for younger players with higher upside to be on the roster. Don't forget down the stretch he didn't play in 13 of the last 14 games. His reputation comes from what he did with Tampa - where he took a really bad team and turned them into a contender within a couple years - and Team Canada - yeah he had a lot to work with there but the teams he built were completely dominating and did it with such precision . His time in Detroit has not been as successful. His scouting staff in Tampa was better IMO - Detroit has had a very poor scouting department other than Haakan Anderson for a long time now. I like Yzerman -but the Red wings let the best GM go IMO- Jim Nill .
