I don't think most people realize the effect that European music has had on modern music. Blacks and whites worked together on the docks, kept their hair short to keep it out of heavy machinery, and wore steel toe boots to protect their feet from falling objects. If I remember correctly, European punk rock merged with Jamaican reggae, and it had a global reaction causing a lot of division and racial tension in the music scene. Everyone was constantly pressured into choosing sides. I learned this after I was singled out in a mosh pit for kissing my Mexican girlfriend in front of two people after they said we looked disgusting together. La Plebe was playing that night and as soon as the music started, I ran to the pit and lasted for three songs against the typical bay area nazis that show up to punk shows just to fight. I stumbled outside for fresh air and a cigarette, barely able to breathe, broken nose, bruises all over my arms, and collapsed on the sidewalk just before everyone else came outside to see what was going on. I was propped up against the fence so other people wouldn't walk all over me and I went on a drunk rant for about 20 minutes and a crowd of about 15-20 people formed outside lighting my cigarettes and giving me water. Not wanting to deal with chaotic San Francisco General Hospital, I got on BART with a cup under my nose to some ER in Concord. Good old punk rock days in San Francisco. This was at Bottom of The Hill about 12 years ago. The next day is when I looked into the origins of nazi skinheads and got into European reggae.
