I'm watching these videos that are like "journal bearings suck, roller bearings all day" and this guy's just over here like "ALL BEARINGS ARE GREAT, SO MANY COOL FUNCTIONS". Love the enthusiasm. I've been reading shingley for 10 hours and these videos made it all click in 10 mins. thanks!
I'm a retired electrician and we usually changed bearings in small to 250 HP motors. Still amazed that when I started back in late 1960's most NEMA motors still either had a zerk fitting or threaded hole to install one to decrease ball bearings. Amazed how long some sealed bearings may last in motors t hug at run 24/7.
This is the first time I have ever heard or read them called "anti-friction" and not "ball" or "roller" bearings. Ain't all bearings supposed to be "anti-friction"? I get that it's rolling resistance vs sliding but they both are designed to minimize friction.
Great video! I really appreciate all your videos; you do a great job. If you don't mind, I would like to comment on a couple of things. Folks who have little or no experience have never heard the term anti-friction bearing as it has kind of become a legacy description. It is entirely accurate and acceptable, however I started using the term "rolling-element bearings" because people tend to understand that term better. Two small nit-piks: You said shielded bearings are lubed for life. That is not true. Sealed bearings are lubed for life but shields are actually installed to prevent over-greasing of the bearings. The shield is always on the side of the bearing where the grease is introduced to the bearings (shields can be removed for oil-lubed bearings). Also, angular contact bearings can be installed back-to-back, face-to-face or even tandem depending upon the application. Almost always they are installed back to back in pumps. However, face-to-face is better when misalignment is present (per SKF). Love the Chesterton 442 Split Seals on your pump!
Sir I've completed my mechanical engineering after now am working mechanical field now am learn pumps and motor sir happy to learn this and watching ur video s
Hey Adam, I learn a lot from your videos...nice efforts....Hope to see some detailed video on both type of bearings..I would also love to see some video on lubrication management ...take care
Hey sir. I see your video is 3 years old. I don't if you're still around but I have one question. I have one pump and one pressure washer both electric, both have zerk grease fittings for the motor bearings. Some people told me not to grease those because I might cause damage. Is that true? If it's not. What kind of grease should I use?
damn good video. Question. So I have an old fashion windmill with a horizontal shaft and 2 sealed bearings. If I wanted to have the shaft to turn more freely, to help with low wind start up, less torque required, can you recommend a better bearing??
It was proven years ago by crankshaft manufacturer SPG that a correctly designed oil fed plain bearing had less friction than a roller bearing or ball race, this related to the roller bearing crankshafts.
I love my wife's hydrodynamic bearing, it supports the axial and radial loads of my shaft very nicely... ;) How the hell does this guy say these things with a straight face? XD
Engineers are all dead inside. They have their sense of humor, personalities and souls beaten out of them throughout the entirety of their academic lives.
Ya que de "Rodamientos" se trata, les sugiero vean el "Rodamiento Autoalineable Yonto" el cual no requiere jaula y se arma a mano sin herramienta alguna.
One reason modern car wheel bearings not lasting as they did before are the use of angular contact model. Older car model often has the tapered roller model. The correct type.
Well, I think 3 things define a bearing: 1. support a cylindrical shaft for rotation or swing; 2. an independent component between shaft and structure; 3. lubricated (or prevent direct friction) Bearings do the 3 things you mentioned, but so are other machine components, e.g. rails, pulleys But to be more general, linear motion supporting element sometimes is also called bearing, such as linear guide can be called linear bearing. So point#1 can be generalized as "support an element's 1-DOF (degree of freedom) movement"....but that won't be nice to put this long string on youtube clip...
Hi, Jim, Tapered bearings on automobile axles and wheel hubs are pre-loaded with threaded nuts to keep the outer conical races and roller elements in contact for exactly the reason you mentioned.
Joe Blow that's absolutely not true. You don't want to restrict radial motion but you absolutely want to restrict axial motion. Depending on the application that's either a crucial principle or simply something that increases efficiency and decreases stress on the components.
No not at all. The shaft still needs general direction and guidance and while some friction is necessary, lubrication helps create the correct amount of friction.
none of these are anti-friction bearings. anti-friction bearings have a groove in an area, where the groove means the ball makes contact on a smaller diameter, slowing it down. this evenly distributes the balls and a cage is no longer needed to space them. this is how they reduce friction
I have to say; Great production quality!
you making a video on Bearings or something?
Hey Cody!! What's up?
bear my children
Fancy seeing him here....
I liked both comments
Surprised this channel isn't more popular. Very well put together.
it's not more popular because the guy is fuckin weird

Hey Adam,
Great video. Looking forward to seeing more from you.
All the best,
Tom
Hi, Tom,
Thanks for the comment and it was great chatting with you the other day. (Btw, love the mousepad)
You are nothing short of an amazing teacher. These videos are so information dense its mind blowing every time I see a new one.

skoronesa It is a bit confusing but common in industry to differentiate anti friction (ball or roller bearing) and plain bearing (pin and bushing).
Thank you for this great overview of anti-friction bearings, sir!
you are a really hard working teacher, thank you and keep going. great videos.
This channel sure needs some recognition
You should make more videos. The way you explain everything I find it very effective an unique way to understand even complicated topics.
Really awesome video with short and great explanation with showing different images. Hope again I will see this type of introduction on any topic.
Short and simple but very informative. Keep them coming man. I am already subsided to u. Don't u dare disappoint me.
This Video helped me with my Bearings Exam. Thank you
Please keep on making more videos like this... Really appreciate your work
Excellent explanation with the animation. excited to see more videos.
"It depends on how much " load" is on your shaft." Ahh...apparently not a whole lot on mine these days...🙄😂

Love the Chesterton 442 Split Seals on your pump!
Studying for my redseal and your videos are really helpful for review. Thanks! Keep em coming!
kindly come up with videos every week!!
Sir I've completed my mechanical engineering after now am working mechanical field now am learn pumps and motor sir happy to learn this and watching ur video s
Your videos are really helpful for me in DME
Better than actual school education! Many thanks...i need these info for my job.
Could you do a video on valves and their types functions and so on.Recetky worked in an internship and I've been seeing these things alot
What about the ball rolling on two races wich have different circumferences ?
Great video. Great information and very easy to watch. Great job man!
Great educational vid on bearings. Thanks and keep up the vids.
Wonderful video. 🙂
Can you please explain how one would decide whether to use hydrodynamic bearing or anti-friction bearing for a given application.
Answer is simple: Depends on the application
Love your capability to explain so simple!
Thank you so much!
This video must have taken a lots of production hours.
But very good explained the concept.
Hey Adam, I learn a lot from your videos...nice efforts....Hope to see some detailed video on both type of bearings..I would also love to see some video on lubrication management ...take care
5:25 the middle one.
Is it okay to weld the bearings?
can't praise you enough
Can you make videos on turbine internals and compressor internals such as seal gas system, turbine governing mechanism, safety valves, surging etc??
thanks very much for sharing. What are the outer side ring and inner ring being made? seamless alloy steel tube or casting?
Brilliant - all very clearly explained thanks :)
Please kindly share the knowledge about turbochargers
please upload more videos .............. waiting for next machine tech videos ..... i just love it ....please please upload

hey Adam, thank's man .
it's extremly usefull i loved it.
Wud like to know about tilting pad journal bearing working principle and when high temperatures issue comes
damn good video. Question. So I have an old fashion windmill with a horizontal shaft and 2 sealed bearings. If I wanted to have the shaft to turn more freely, to help with low wind start up, less torque required, can you recommend a better bearing??
Are there linear bearings for move along inside pipes/tubes?
Adam, Thank you for this video. Just getting into the bearings market. Is there any way we could speak in more details?
Conical roller bearings are often used to support the wheels of cars.
6:22 NOT SO. Balls do not contact at a single point but an oval shaped footprint much larger than a point and nearly as large as a roller would.
So Tapered Cylindrical bearings are the best ones..got it
It was proven years ago by crankshaft manufacturer SPG that a correctly designed oil fed plain bearing had less friction than a roller bearing or ball race, this related to the roller bearing crankshafts.
can you please do the introduction of bearings pleaseeee 🥺
Why i didn't find this channel earlier.??
Me too😭
Thanks...very well done.... I use these for my grade 9 thru 12 power tech and auto classes.
That's exactly what I hoped! I'm glad other educators are finding these videos useful.
Whats meaining of anti friction bearing i think all bearing are anti friction
like sliding surface and rolling contact also
Amazing!!! Love a good channel before it gets overwhelmed with earthlings ^^
Very thorough!! really easy to understand
Where we can find FULL Lecture/Video on Bearings ??
Bushing engineers would like to have a word about your definition of bearing
nah. bushings aren't bearings, and bearings aren't bushings.
Love from India, Punjab!😊
great video, can you link me or make a video how to calculate bearing size. Thanks.
Nice summary ❤️
I love my wife's hydrodynamic bearing, it supports the axial and radial loads of my shaft very nicely... ;)
How the hell does this guy say these things with a straight face? XD
Engineers are all dead inside. They have their sense of humor, personalities and souls beaten out of them throughout the entirety of their academic lives.
Ask a mechanic about suck squeeze bang blow.
Ah, the good old 4 stroke, though in practice you need a lot more than 4 strokes to get anything done.
I thought in a bicycle wheel hub the ball bearings are loose (not locked into a cage) ?
Ya que de "Rodamientos" se trata, les sugiero vean el "Rodamiento Autoalineable Yonto" el cual no requiere jaula y se arma a mano sin herramienta alguna.
hi,can you please tell me what type of bearing have long life in vertical wind turbine?thank you
Can you do a video on bearing number designations
Great video! I learned things! 👍 😊
I thought all bearings were anti-friction bearings. Isn't anti-friction the reason for using bearings?
Please make a video on axial load thrust load, radial load ,..so I can understand better.
Yes I did learn a lot, thanks!
One reason modern car wheel bearings not lasting as they did before are the use of angular contact model. Older car model often has the tapered roller model. The correct type.

'modern car wheel bearings not lasting as they did before'. source?
what the...? do they sell krombacher in the usa??
Hi, Gigaguenther,
Adam here. I lived in Berlin for some time and was given that Krombacher hat as corporate schwag. Guess I was a valued customer...
Gigaguenther they sell krombacker in Ontario Canada. I pick it up from time to time.
Thank you so much. Your videos are to help full for me
I've seen plenty of bearings with rods and cones rather than balls. Also plenty of bearing assemblies without the separator feature.
Stan Rodgers.... OK?
Another great video.
From now on I'm going to refer to my girlfriends parts as a linear bearing for my shaft.
Pls add about babbit bearings
Well, I think 3 things define a bearing: 1. support a cylindrical shaft for rotation or swing; 2. an independent component between shaft and structure; 3. lubricated (or prevent direct friction)

Thanks a lot for this nice explanation!
Great explanation... Thank you very much
why would they put a tapered bearing on a axle of a truck wouldn't the bearing be trying to pull apart all the time
Hi, Jim,
Tapered bearings on automobile axles and wheel hubs are pre-loaded with threaded nuts to keep the outer conical races and roller elements in contact for exactly the reason you mentioned.
you forgot about one type of force, what about nonaxieal torque?
Why is the bearing so big
Superb explanations
Very good video. Keep it up, guys!
There's a lot of energy lost by the friction between the rollers and the separators. Dont exist any system that solve that problem??
Well done. Nice video.
You never want to restrict the motion of the shaft.
Joe Blow that's absolutely not true. You don't want to restrict radial motion but you absolutely want to restrict axial motion. Depending on the application that's either a crucial principle or simply something that increases efficiency and decreases stress on the components.
Oh no. You want to thrust the shaft in and out, rotate it, and stir it.
Joe Blow oh OK I see what we're doing here. You're right, the shaft needs total freedom of movement.
No not at all. The shaft still needs general direction and guidance and while some friction is necessary, lubrication helps create the correct amount of friction.
If friction causes heat how much sex to boil a jug??
thats also known as a deep groove ball bearing it has the same purpose
Hi Adam .
Make video on compressor...
great explanation!
Thank you UA-cam recommendations
Great video! Very informative. Looking forward for more
What type of load you have acting on your shaft.
none of these are anti-friction bearings. anti-friction bearings have a groove in an area, where the groove means the ball makes contact on a smaller diameter, slowing it down. this evenly distributes the balls and a cage is no longer needed to space them. this is how they reduce friction
The irony is that a proper bushing has less friction than an anti-friction bearing.
lobe pumps we are professional manufactures
Thrust bearings?
Great work
Perfect!! Many thanks sir
