Thank you for this illuminating video. I'm a beginner, looking for ideas and found this demonstration very helpful. I like the style of your work too, so thank you
Fantastic demonstration! Thank you. I just took a class from a fabulous instructor demonstrating both of these techniques but your video really helped me understand it more thoroughly.
i enjoy all your videos, there is no flash stuff , that can be distracting, just a lady who loves to play with clay. I'm in an adult ed class, have been for several years and love to throw, this term were looking at surface decoration so finding this was perfect. thankyou.
An alternative to cling film are those green biodegrable bags that we use for foodwaste. They work just like clingfilm but of course are environmentally friendly.
I’m a little late to the party - but I just love your design! (I can bear the music because your work is lovely) tumble drier sheets are good for under the clay also - and you can use them again and again xx ❤
I have just started watching 6our UA-cam pottery videos. Thanks for sharing. I’m definitely going to give slip trailing a go. It would be ideal if you showed the glazed bowl at the end of your clip.
Thanks. I'm trying to do this more now but I tend to record and post videos quickly before I've had time to dry and fire. You can see the finished piece on my socials at instagram.com/p/CBu71imDwDK/?igsh=dndzNDZrZ3B6ajAz
Decorating slips generally stay very close to the colour they go on but it's worth checking. I have a brown slip that paints on a reddish colour. They will also alter slightly if you put a transparent glaze on top. They tend to darken slightly. Hope that helps ☺️
Hi. Yes 😊 It was bisque fired to 1000C as it's stoneware clay. I then glazed the inside with transparent gloss glaze to show the slip colours. The outside I glazed in a matt turquoise then it was fired again to 1200C to finish it.
No, it's coloured decorating slips which are basically clay watered down with a coloured stain in it. They don't vitrify like a glaze rather they act the same as the clay body.
Thanks. I bought these decorating slips but you can make coloured slip by mixing clay with water and coloured mason stains. It's best made with a smooth clay as grog makes a sandy textured surface.
Absolutely, reusing is always good ☺️ I've since started using the compostable bags used for food waste instead of the plastic wrap and it seems to work just as well and makes me feel a bit better 😁
The slip fires to the same temperature as the clay you're decorating. You do need to make sure that the slip you use is ok to fire at the clay firing temperature but they tend to have a very wide firing range. You only use slips on greenware before firing the clay generally thanks to the shrinkage that happens during firing. 😊
I enjoyed watching the video, but when you would switch back and forth between you talking and the music , the music was so much louder that I would have to continually adjust the volume up and down which kind of drove me crazy after a while. Other than that I really did enjoy your video and subscribed.
Yeah, sorry. This was one of my earlier videos and I hadn't quite figured out the editing I'm still no expert but you shouldn't have this in any more recent videos 😏
Hi. The liquid is decorative coloured slip which is watered down clay with clay stains as pigment to add colour. You can make your own from the clay you use for making (add water and ceramic stain to some dried out clay pieces, leave it to soak then mix) but I admit that I tend to buy them premixed for consistency.
Good video instructions..thanks so much..🤗😁 I agree with some of the other people, please turn down the music..I had to keep turning it down , then turn it back up to hear you speak..not a criticism, just constructive advice..thanks😁
Very cool bowl... music was loud (and unpleasant) and it's not just your channel. Unfortunately a lot of UA-cam artists feel they need to add music and it's always too loud.
To “my dear mother, “there’s no accounting of tastes.” I actually found the music to be more pleasant than much of what I hear on UA-cam! I can certainly agree that I love the bowl, enough that I may try doing my own version. Thank you.
I have made the same observation regarding UA-camrs and music. I have asked many of them what they feel the music is supposed to add to the video, and no one has given me a real answer. Unfortunately, when folks are new at making UA-cam videos, they are often not good at balancing the music volume and the speech volume. At least in this video she wasn't playing the music the whole time and making it hard to understand what she was saying.
So where are the pics of it fired and glazed. (Clear I assume/hope.) Ya can't just show us something so potentiality cool and not give us some after pics. Give us closure!😟

@@PaulaArmstrongCeramics ~ahhhh closure~ lol. That turned out great. It always amazes me how much things change in the kiln. Here's a share for you. I started doing Friday night kiln opening parties. Put out some snacks. A little wine. I show videos of the stuff in the kiln being made. Pictures of what it looked like when it went in. I have had 6 of them this winter. At 2 of them I sold everything in the kiln and then some. Plus, I got to socialize a little. I always want to finish the sales before my second glass of wine. Lol no use tempting the fates.
@@PaulaArmstrongCeramics I'm not too good at posting stuff. My nephew has done all my video stuff. We been talking about getting some videos posted but he recently discovered girls sooooooo. . . .

Beautiful.
Oh cool. I've never used the inside of the bowl before. I usually drape it over the top :-)
Paula… how did you glaze this piece after first firing? Clear glaze?
Yes, just transparent gloss 😊

Where to buy your slips ? Thank you for sharing..
I buy mine from Potclays.co.uk and Scarva.com as they can be fired to stoneware 😊

hello there, thank you for the video. new to pottery. does it matter what temperature to fire slip?

After this decoracation , you would fire them and finish it ?no need anything . Sorry ı have no idea about this, trying to learn 🙏🏻
Yes, normally you would fire, glaze it (with transparent glaze over the coloured slip decorated sections) then fire again to glaze. ☺️ temperature.
Thank you ❤

It's coloured decorative slip rather than engobe but I don't see why you couldn't use engobe equally...
