How to make your Makers Stamp from clay
A quick video showing a simple way to make your makers stamp from clay with step by step instructions.
It's easy to make your makers stamp from clay, simply model the stamp shape then press in the detail/letters/etc. Just remember to engrave everything back to front bearing in mind that elements that are pressed into the clay will be raised on the stamp and that you only fire to bisque temperature in the kiln.
You can be as intricate or simple as you are able to create in the clay that you're using but do consider how it's going to look when stamped into your work.
Have fun!

      You can pop a board on top as it dries to help. It not only puts a bit of weight on top but also slows the drying a bit.

    Hi Paula, im new to pottery and to your channel which i find really intuitive and inspirational. I live in Spain and having so many difficulties with translation of products. May i please ask you if underglaze is used on greenware or bisque? If used on bisque does it have to be fired again prior to glazing? Which would make it as 3 firings? Many thanks Joanne

    • @PaulaArmstrongCeramics
      @PaulaArmstrongCeramics 11 годин тому

      Hi Joanne. Thanks 😊 I'm glad you're enjoying the channel. Underglaze can be used on both greenware and bisque. There's no need to fire again if painted on bisque but you do have to be very careful when you apply the transparent glaze on top. I'd suggest dipping is possibly the best option for applying the glaze if you can....

    Hi, Paula, I just finished watching your video, and finally have some one show how it done, simple and cute.i just ordered 2 slabs I guess that what u call it. of Das clay at Amazon 2 weeks ago. I'm a retired toddler and two yr old daycare worker.and do monthly activities with my niece's 10 yr son. he's in 2 grade. and thire class made this little clay house last year. and it looks just like yours .I gave everything to make this , QUESTION is this air died clay because I want to bake it in the oven. at what temperature?.and glaze it with vanish. his class did the same thing..😊

    • @PaulaArmstrongCeramics
      @PaulaArmstrongCeramics 11 годин тому

      Hi. In the video I'm using clay that I fire in a kiln rather than air-drying clay but the techniques should translate pretty well 🙂 If you're using Das air-drying clay you shouldn't need to bake it as it just dries at room temp and once it's hardened you can paint/varnish it. It should have instructions on the packet if it's a type of clay that needs to be baked like fimo.

    My figurine is too shiny..is there a way to remove or dull, the glaze? Thank you

    • @PaulaArmstrongCeramics
      @PaulaArmstrongCeramics Місяць тому

      Hmmm, glaze is essentially a coating of a glass-like material over the ceramic so that's tricky. I think my first step would be to try reglazing with a matte glaze over the top and see if that helps. It won't cover the previous glaze but will melt and blend with it but it may help. I do however say to only reglaze if you really dislike the piece as it's always a risk when refiring Outside of that you could paint the surface with something like a metal or glass paint. A frosty spray maybe?

Every piece, pack it in bags bring it to my car take it out the car and put it in the studio..... you can imagine what i mean. Also i would like to use a kiln, it is part of the pieces i make. So i will go for a small one. Your experience and explanation on this is usefull for me. Thank you. Greetz Sheila

    Excellent video, thank you. I have a query I hope you can help me with...Can I mix the oxides you mention into the clay body, to colour the clay itself? I've come across a few videos online where this has been done, but the oxides are always mixed into stoneware. I use earthenware clay only (lower firing temp) and would really appreciate your thoughts on this. Many thanks!

    • @PaulaArmstrongCeramics
      @PaulaArmstrongCeramics Місяць тому

      Yes, you can but I'd suggest you test it on a small quantity of clay first. It also needs to be mixed very well or it'll be more marbled than coloured. It's also worth trying different quantities of oxide to test intensity but careful not to overload or it may stick to your kiln shelf or split the clay Have fun 😄

    This is so great!! Thanks for making the video. I was cutting the 'v' for each petal on a flat circle, and when I molded it into a bowl shape, each V was tearing and needed scoring and overlapping, which was more time consuming than I wanted... So this gives me a new way of making the petals without them breaking... AND, the base stays thicker and the petals get thinner as you mold them upward, taller, so it's more lightweight with a heavier base... thanks!

    • @PaulaArmstrongCeramics
      @PaulaArmstrongCeramics 5 місяців тому

      No, it's coloured decorating slips which are basically clay watered down with a coloured stain in it. They don't vitrify like a glaze rather they act the same as the clay body.

    Each time you added coils how long did you wait for it to dry.

    • @PaulaArmstrongCeramics
      @PaulaArmstrongCeramics 5 місяців тому

      Unfortunately this is a tricky question to answer... I left it progressively longer as I went up the build to avoid the bottom slumping as I added coils. The exact time will always depend on the clay that you are using, you'll have to wait longer for wetter clay although it will blend much easier. I have to admit, I tend to be impatient and use a heat gun/paint stripper to dry coils in between to make sure it's ready for the next section 🙈
