    Placido Domingo - Jose Carreras - Luciano Pavarotti

    THIS VIDEO IS NOT MEANT TO BE A COMPARISON OR COMPETITION OF ANY KIND; NOR IS IT MEANT TO DIMINISH THE SPECTACULAR TALENTS OF THE OTHER GREAT TENORS IN THE VIDEO: IT IS MERELY TO DEMONSTRATE THAT ANTOINE AT 20; CAN ALREADY HOLD HIS OWN WITH SUCH GREAT VOICES; WITH HIS OWN ORIGINAL STYLE; BRILLIANT COMMAND; VOICE AND PHRASING:

    Young and old so many of us feel a certain guardianship of this young man. We were there when he appeared one day upon the world stage. I hope all those who guide him now have much wisdom. He has a powerful voice with a tender heart.

    I absolutely hate all this competitive, hierarchical / quantitative ranking mentality when it comes to tenors. The truth is that Jonathan Antoine has a very unique, distinctive voice, very natural, warm and human - not at all like the brassy, spit and polish quality that you see in almost all other operatic tenors of our time. That's very refreshing. And if those different and distinctive qualities really appeal to you, then to you, Jonathan Antoine is the greatest tenor of our time. And that's not to downplay Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo or other tenors, who have wonderful gifts as well.

    My heart rejoices when I hear Antoine sing. My eyes tear up when I remember the shy fellow I first saw on TV. And I laugh out loud when I remember the looks on the faces of those who looked down upon him as he took the stage. I believe God was laughing too! Blessings on you and yours Jonathan!

    I know nothing about opera myself but I know this young man makes me "feel" the words he is singing. I love watching his videos, for this very reason. To see his expression on his face as he sings these words just makes the song so much more meaningful. You can see that singing is a true passion for him, and it warms my heart to see a talented young man make a living and a great future with something he is so passionate about.

      Hi Tanya, exactly! and that was the point of this video, not a competition- but to make it clear that Jonathan Antoine does NOT need to be what opera snobs suggest. His talent and beautiful voice are natural, yet as you state 'dynamic'. So tired of the ''opera'' snobs.

  • @Lissa71

    Each great VOICE brings his own stylings to the music... at the end they put him up against 3 (great of our times) tenors.... He obviously has an "amazing" talent that almost over took them why try to tear him down. The internet is horrid. HIde behind your computers.. no worry of looking someone in the eyes when you say something bad about them... He has a talent that most of us would give our left arm for. AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, HEARTFELT. Thank you jonathan antoine.. for sharing your talent with the world.

    • @laurencedemello
      @laurencedemello  7 років тому +6

      Yes Mell, and that was the reason for this post and video, it was not meant in any way to put this amazing talent under pressure or make comparison it was to show he has a natural and extraordinary voice and at the end of the day, it means nothing that he has not done ''opera'' or his voice is not "mature'' , I would like to say its not "institutionalised" as so many feel is the way to go, this young man is the real thing, beautiful, amazing, REAL! thanks for the post. And yes, many people love to tear down genuine natural talent and 'goodness'.

    I have been absolutely amazed at how Jonathan has his own interpretation of the great arias in opera. His voice is so affecting - he makes me rethink other interpretations - it's as if the music is new again, never mind that the composers(s) lived a hundred or more years ago.
    He inserts a delicacy of phrasing and dynamics into familiar arias that catches me so off guard, but when I hear him sing it's as if he alone knew the proper intention of the composer. Not ashamed to say that he can bring me to tears.

    • @TampaZeke

      So true - and not just operatic arias. His interpretation of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Mis is heart-wrenching, just as it was intended. It's wonderful to see someone at the start of a great career. I have never seen any recordings of Pavarotti or Domingo at a similar age but I doubt that they could have been any better.

    Jonathan Antoine is the greatest tenor the world has enjoyed in comparison to what we have heard since the making of recordings was possible. Jonathan's voice and the emotions he conveys, his expression, is beyond all of what was accomplished in the recent past performances (we cannot listen to greats in the past before audio recordings were made to be totally objective). All I know is that anyone who has not heard Johnathan Antoine, they are truly missing out.

    Bit naughty this montage but it does show Jonathan's massive potential. As so many have stated he is only 20 years old and already he's nearly holding his own against previous greats. For those of us who regularly attend his concerts whenever possible, this is a given. The timbre of his voice is wonderful, rich and velvety smooth. He improves literally month on month and in years to come I believe he will be truly stupendous. We are very lucky to be able to follow and support him on his journey from a 17 year old BGT finalist to the greatest tenor of the 21st century and possibly even beyond. One thing's for sure, his is a name that will not be forgotten.

    Comments I've read about this young man vary appropriately. He is not yet all the way there but will continue to improve and already has such an interesting quality to his voice. I almost hear a baritone-like fullness, deeper and rounder than most first tenors (timbre? I have no expertise), but then I hear his power and range and am astonished. In some ways, he is the best I've heard.

    My goodness this PHENOMENALLY talented young tenor must be very frustrated being constantly compared with opera legends in their 40's and 50's.
    I have only two concerns for Mr Antoine-one being that if he does train for 'Opera' that the training does not affect his glorious rich golden musical voice and he ends up sounding like the 3 tenors in the clip! - I think institutionalized was mentioned. What for me makes this young tenor stand out is his EXTRAORDINARY MUSICALITY -his voice flows with the music he does not compete with it - only ENHANCES IT.
    My other concern is that he continues to be surrounded by people both technical and non-technical who are not only interested in his incredible voice but in the health happiness and wellbeing of this lovely young man!

    I agree with Adam Knight, the temptation of such early success must not be at the expense of Jonathan's ultimate legacy...... His capacity to be one of the greatest of all.

    • @Knightoftheorient
      @Knightoftheorient 8 років тому +1

      Thankyou, rather like Rolando Villazon said Jonathan needs to be patient for success and not chase the big bucks which if I'm being honest I'm not entirely convinced he is doing with all the self-promo stuff he does and his label intent on making him do Popera album's instead of encouraging him to join an operatic company like La Scala to develop his education.

    • @laurencedemello
      @laurencedemello  8 років тому +1

      +Adam Knight here we go again Adam, his "opera education' ! He loves to SING, people LOVE to HEAR him sing! why can you not just accept his enormous beautiful voice and talent for what it is? why do you and others feel this anxious need to insist he needs to go back to school or be under the wing of an Opera house? has it crossed your mind that he may have absolutely no intention of doing "Opera''? Joaquim Cortez is the greatest flamenco/crossover dancer in the world, his talent is amazing, he was despised by the purist flamenco community and seen as a ''traitor to the 'art' by crossing over and being creative with his talent! Yet the public can't get enough of his work! Why do you need to put everyone in a "box"? it's such a narrow minded and snobbish way of thinking, a true creative talent is ''untamed'' and steps outside and does not need to conform to snobbish rules and regulations. That is exactly what Nijinsky did! Kind regards.

    • @Knightoftheorient
      @Knightoftheorient 8 років тому +1

      +laurence de mello I'm not trying to put Jonathan or anyone else for that matter into a "box" as you put it. If there's one thing I cannot stand it's one dimensional musicians or singers. I appreciate the Classical Crossover genre because it gives artists the chance to be creative and do some original and refreshing with the classical sound rather then stick with conventional often outdated conforms, afterall it was The Three Tenors themselves that originally thrusted opera into the mainstream and encouraged the concept after Mario Lanza had kind of inadvertently pioneered it with his Hollywood-Opera career.
      I for one am happy for Jonathan in whatever path he chooses and will forever be a fan of his music and more importantly his voice, it's a testament to his talent that some of the songs he has sung I could never have invisioned me liking if they where sung by anyone else. All I'm trying to say is I would hate it for the people within the elitist Opera institution to discount him as just another Pop-Tenor when if he chooses (which gathering by what he hinted in the documentary) he will try to eventually to become an Opera star. When he visited La Scala opera house with Charlotte and he said that he'd love to follow in Pavarotti's footsteps I think that's what he was hinting at, but he also wisely said that this will be very difficult to replicate in his own way!
      I don't know why you continue to jump on me for giving my opinion when all I really want is for Jonathan to fulfil his potential, he won't achieve that by purely releasing the odd album every few years and then touring to the same handfall of people. It has struck me that it always seems to be the same old faces turning up at his concerts and having photo's taken with him etc... He needs more publicity in the States etc like Susan Boyle did to make it truly big, he has a small community of fans over there who I know are frustrated by David Foster's lack of activity to give him concert opportunities since the Fight Night thing a few years back!

    • @mikromummo
      @mikromummo 8 років тому +2

      +laurence de mello Its because he´s enourmous talent is going to be really wasted if he settles to sing just popera. He have talent to go so much further in his music career and maybe people like Adam and I feel that its a great pity if he just settle for a fast fame!

    Yes, Gabby. Point well made! Guiding and honing his PARTICULAR sound, which is natural and blest by nature and Providence. And not 'massaging it' into something else it might not have to be..he does seem to have wise management and guidance. And I cross fingers they understand where he should..and should NOT go, musically. We shall see. In the meantime, I so savor that sound..my oh my..

    There is so much in opera which deals with deep emotion, of rejection, and triumph -- sorrow and unspeakable joy. Jonathan has the emotion to bring to his words the depth of emotion -- because no one who lives in the world today with its abject cruelty, which surely could not have filled his cup overflowing to the brim. However, the human spirit has triumphed in him. And that emotional impact flavors his music and takes it from just being a performance, it is a delivery with all the catharsis the composer could have written into it. And it touches that part of us which also has been wounded and gives us hope that there is yet beauty that we can find in life and that there are those who also find it dear and hold it close. That he is popular, shows that the love of culture is not dead. We are not supposed to say that this is exceptional -- yet to not say that is to lie.
